Autumn is coming
The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run; To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will never cease, For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind; Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep, Drows'd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook Spares the next swath and all its twinéd flowers: And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep Steady thy laden head across a brook; Or by a cyder-press, with patient look, Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barréd clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn; Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
And speaking of autumn, Here’s the autumn version of Briz, our community newsletter, full of good things

"A CROWN OF FRIENDSHIP“
October 26th 7.30 at St Cuthbert's Crypt, Sandy Park Road. Entrance £5 for non members
Jonathan Rowe tells the story of Bristol First World War poet, Fabian Strachan Woodley ( 1888 - 1957).
Born in Clifton he was a poet, journalist , sportsman and a hero of the First World War, awarded the Military Cross. He was also gay and a Christian.
Some of his work appeared in the very first anthology of male same sex love poetry and prose ever published in the U.S.A in 1924.
QUISUTDEUS ( "Who Is Like God?" )
Written in the trenches of Loos, June 1917. This morning as I walked the winding road, Through villages shell - shocked and forlorn, I marked how every dwelling had it's scar, Nor was there one but was battle torn. Long since the inhabitants had fled away, Only the birds were there that summer morn.
And suddenly I spied at the cross ways
A crowned Christ upon a cross of pain, Whose eyes, unfathomable utterly , Looked ever out across a shell scarred plain. Behind Him rose the shadow of His house, Which men in substance built - and broke again.
Even thus, through every hamlet that I passed It was the same - Christ reigned triumpantly, And men of hate no weapon could devise, To break his cross, or mar his Effigy, But of his goodness He permits them stay To be our Help and Strength eternally.
What about being a Volunteer in our local community?
Great opportunities in the next pages
St Anne's House
We are seeking compassionate volunteers to help local over 75s by driving them to a heartwarming and FREE Boccia group every month. Boccia is a chance to bond, share laughter, and create cherished memories together.
Drivers will play a key role in getting the guests to and from the group. They also get to stay for the game, tea and chat!
The best part? You only need to commit a few hours of your time each month! This small act of kindness will have an immeasurable impact on our community.
Please reach out to us if you're interested in giving some time to this fantastic local project and opportunity to make friends, support your community and meet new people in the process.
As a volunteer driver you will be picking up one to two activity guests from their homes so they can attend our monthly activity-based groups. These outings are the highlight for many of our activity guests and, for some, it is the only time they leave their house for a social occasion. You will be required to complete a DBS check for this role, for which Reengage will cover the cost. Tasks include:
● Driving one to two activity guests, using your own car, to the venue and returning them home again after the activity.
● Staying at the group to help with activities, conversation and serving refreshments.
● Liaising with the group coordinator to confirm which activity guests you will pick up.
● Keeping the group coordinator informed of any concerns or issues you might have.
Please contact 07709 264 201 and leave a message or email Ellie from re-engage at ellie.plummer@reengage.org.uk
Ramblers
Our path network is a national treasure. It’s our gateway to the outdoors. Spreading out from towns, cities and villages, our paths connect us to one another, to nature and have a huge impact on our health and wellbeing.
And now, for the very first time, new research commissioned by the Ramblers has revealed just how valuable it is. The path network adds over 3,000 healthy years of life to the nation, worth an estimated £2 billion – more than £33 for every person in England and Wales.

This Sunday with the bible
Every Sunday we have three short passages from the bible to reflect on. There's usually one from the Old Testament - the Jewish bible as well as Christian; one from the life of the early church after Jesus; and one from the gospel stories of Jesus' life.
Have a read Here
Three things from today’s bible passages:
“It’s never too late!
It’s no good blaming others
Don’t place ourselves above others”

Do One Thing for ASD 2023
ASD=Anti-Slavery Day
Anti-Slavery Day is an annual opportunity for churches, businesses, charities, and individuals to consider afresh what they can do to eliminate modern slavery in their communities.
However, when we hear the numbers of people trapped in slavery in the UK and beyond, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless.
That’s why we've launched our “Do One Thing” campaign to coincide with Anti Slavery Day this October!
Any action, no matter how small, could change or save the life of somebody in desperate circumstances. What's more, small steps can lead to more significant changes and working towards slavery-free communities is not something we can do on our own or overnight.
Here’s what some are doing
It could be as simple as signing up for a modern slavery seminar to learn more about the issue, putting up helpline posters around your church buildings, or downloading the Safe Car Wash App and using it whenever you go to a hand car wash.
So, this month, please:
• think about one step you can take
to fight modern slavery
• film yourself or your church describing your pledge, upload to your socials and tag The Clewer Initiative. Use the hashtags #DOT4ASD #AntiSlaveryDay
look out for our short films on your socials and please share them widely! We need to inspire more people!
Legislation clarifying that parish and town councils can provide support to churches for repairs and improvements has cleared its final stages in the House of Lords.
A Government amendment to the Bill makes it clear that local authorities can provide grants for parish churches or places of worship, following many years of legal uncertainty.
The amendment was introduced after the Bishop of Bristol, Viv Faull highlighted the need for clarification of the law during the Bill’s Committee Stage in the House of Lords. Bishop Viv, who is the Church of England’s joint lead bishop on church buildings, said: “This amendment brings clarity to the law which will give local authorities confidence to awards grants to local church buildings to enable them to serve their communities better.
“I have long been in conversation with Government about bringing in this change and have been contacted by both local authorities and church councils who are anticipating this change with enthusiasm and gratitude.

Operation Christmas Child
This is a Christian organisation that not only gives shoeboxes to children with very little. Giving boxes like these is often a way into remote communities where there is very little contact.
For £20 per box you can fill a box on line from various choices and for a boy or girl in the age group of your choosing.
You can then donate the gift as part of St Luke's group by selecting 'group' and putting St Luke's Brislington in the name box.
We are aiming to get 20 boxes donated on line.
You are also most welcome to collect a box from St Luke's church on Sunday mornings and make up your own or if you are unable to give so much any cash donations can be made via Rosemary Spada and she will use the funds to make up more boxes on line.
Thank you for any support you can give. More Information Here
