We love to hear and share stories from our patients and you will see a few more here in this winter issue of our community newsletter, The Update. As we strive to make your patient experience one that is excellent, how can we better serve you? We value your input. minimally-invasive surgery that is performed through small incisions. During a robotic-assisted surgical procedure, our surgeon sits at a console while viewing a high-definition, 3D image of the patient’s target anatomy. He performed a radical masectomy removing her right breast along with her lymph nodes. Eunice recovered in the hospital for five days and without any further treatment, she has remained cancer free for 49 years. Eunice just celebrated her 86th birthday November 16th.

SURVIVORS Diane Johnson and her mother Eunice Barry share
much in common. They both share the love of reading, baking, quiet evenings in the country and the same great smile. They’ve both worked at Benders Foods in Guttenberg, Eunice working in the deli for 10 years, retiring 20 years ago, and Diane, aka “the cake lady” decorating cakes there for the last 26 years. The mother and daughter also share a history of breast cancer. It was 49 years ago, in 1969, when Eunice felt a lump in her right breast during a self examination. With five of her seven aunts diagnosed with breast cancer, Eunice knew the

importance of self examinations. Her physician, Dr. Downey at Guttenberg Hospital ordered a mammogram in which the lump was confirmed and then ordered a biopsy. Protocol was a bit different in 1969. While Eunice was under sedation, the surgeon, Dr. George Auer, performed a biopsy at the hospital. She remained under sedation while the biopsy was driven to Cedar Rapids to be examined by pathology. It was confirmed cancerous and a call was made to Dr. Auer to proceed with surgery.
Eunice’s daughter Diane Johnson’s story is a bit different. She did not feel a lump. Radiologist, Dr. David Jensen, saw a suspicious abnormality in Diane’s routine mammogram in December, 2017. She was called back for additional views in January, 2018 and a tiny lump, less that 1/8” in size, was discovered in her left breast. Dr. Jensen performed a stereotactic breast biopsy, a procedure that uses mammography to precisely identify and biopsy any abnormality within the breast. The biopsy results confirmed that the lump was cancerous. Before making a decision on her treatment, with the guidance of her Cornerstone Family Practice provider, Diane had genetic BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing to see if she inherited the breast cancer gene. “I was so relieved when the tests came back negative,” commented Diane. In April, Diane’s surgeon, Dr. Keith Shaw, performed a lumpectomy and it appeared that all of the cancerous cells had been removed during Dr. Jensen’s initial biopsy. Diane’s cancer was Stage 0. Radiation was still recommended and beginning in May, Diane’s husband, Marlin, drove her to Dubuque five days a week, for five weeks, for a total of 25 radiation treatments.

“He was my radiation buddy,” reflects Diane. “The treatments were exhausting, especially because of the daily drive to Dubuque. It really made us appreciate the five minute trip into Guttenberg to GMHC for our health care. Besides the convenience, I think patients at GMHC appreciate and value the ability to call and talk to a doctor, nurse, tech or office personel they feel comfortable with. I know I do! I am not just a name on a file. They take the time to get to know me and my family. They’ve helped us get through the good and the bad with the compassion of a friend. This important quality is lost in larger hospitals/clinics. It’s a quality that we are thankful for every time we walk through the doors.” Eunice and Diane were happy to learn that 3D Mammography technology is coming to GMHC. “I think the GMHC mammography technologists and radiologists do a terrific job now. But knowing the improved image quality of 3D offers more accurate detection and could save women the emotional toll of
being called back for further scans is wonderful. We’re thankful that GMHC strives to provide the best service they can to patients,” said Eunice. Why 3D Mammography? 3D Mammography technology combines conventional 2-dimensional mammogram images with additional 3-dimensional views, enhancing the views of breast tissue resulting in several benefits.
MORE ACCURATE DETECTION.
By minimizing the impact of overlapping breast tissue, 3D mammography can make a tumor easier to see. This technology creates multiple images of the breast in many very thin layers so radiologists can examine tissue one layer at a time instead of viewing just a single flat image. Fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below. The increased image quality and detail help radiologists better see the size, shape and location of any abnormalities, finding more cancers than with 2D images alone.
EARLIER DIAGNOSIS.
Overlapping tissue can hide small cancers in a 2D scan. However, with 3D mammography, the image “slices” can be analyzed one by one. By looking at the breast tissue in one millimeter slices, the radiologist can provide a more accurate assessment. 3D mammography provides a 25 percent improvement in overall cancer detection rates, finding 40 percent more invasive cancers than conventional mammography.
BETTER DETECTION IN DENSE BREAST TISSUE. Dense breast tissue can cause shadows due to overlapping tissue, which hides tumors from traditional 2D mammography. 3D mammography takes images of the breast from multiple angles, thereby offering a cutting-edge look through and around breast tissue helping radiologists better see any abnormalities.
LESS ANXIETY. The improved
accuracy in diagnosing abnormal structures offered by a 3D view of the breast decreases the number of unnecessary callbacks to women for additional scans and biopsies because of overlapped normal structures. The “false positive” rates are reduced by up to 40 percent. For many, this may mean being spared the emotional and economic burdens of additional diagnostic evaluations, including biopsies.

Q & A: Skilled Care at GMHC What is Skilled Care?
Skilled Care allows patients to receive extended care at GMHC. Once acute (short term) hospital care is no longer needed, patients may still require care not easily provided at home. GMHC Skilled Care will help patients reach their highest potential for health and independence prior to going home.
Who is eligible? Looking for an opportunity to improve your lifestyle? Health Coaches help individuals successfully manage medical conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and other health issues. They help people develop a personalized plan to reach their goals for healthy living.
Most Skilled Care admissions require a 3-day acute inpatient hospital stay that has been within the last 30 days. Patients who require specialized care on a daily basis benefit from Skilled Care. Care includes nursing staff, physical, occupational, speech, or respiratory therapy. Through Skilled Care, it can be determined if the patient can return home to live independently. A recent stroke, a recent cardiac event, an orthopedic injury or joint replacement surgery, or a complicated hospital stay with subsequent loss of functional independence are conditions that may require Skilled Care.
