A GRATEFUL PATIENT

Message from Clint My name is Clint Christianson and I have had the privilege of serving as the interim CEO for Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics since January 8, 2019. Here is a little information about my background Clint Christianson Interim CEO and how I came to serve in the interim role here in Guttenberg. Guttenberg Municipal Hospital is where I began my career as a Chief Executive Officer. I was here from 1984 to 1987. After leaving GMH, I worked at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa for 10 years. In 1997, I began the last leg of my career with Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines. During this 21 year relationship with Mercy, I served in three different roles. The first three years, I served as the Executive Director of the Health Network of Iowa PHO. Next I served two years as the Vice President of Networking. In this role, I was responsible for providing leadership and coordination of our thirteen affiliate/managed hospitals. The last fourteen years of my career took me to Mercy Medical Center – Centerville where I served as President and CEO. Mercy Centerville was a Critical Access Hospital with 20 Long Term Care Beds and we also had a Provider Based Rural Health Clinic. I retired from Mercy Centerville last August. So here I am two months into the role as Interim CEO and loving everything but the really cold weather! It is great to see those team members who I knew from my previous tour and it has been great getting to know all of the team members that work day in and day out to make this great organization what it is today. Needless to say, the facilities have changed dramatically since my time here in the 1980’s, but it is not the facilities that make Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics what it is today. It is each and every one of our teammates that make this organization great. Knowing that my title is “Interim CEO” I did want to share some information on the progress that has been made on the recruitment of a permanent CEO. There were more than thirty applicants that were screened to see if they met the qualifications of the position. From this group of thirty potential candidates seven were interviewed via phone. From the phone interviews four candidates were chosen to participate in the first round of face-to-face interviews. These interviews were conducted on Friday, March 1. From these interviews it will be determined who will be offered an on-site interview with the Board, Medical Staff, and Management Staff. Just so you know, being back here where I started my career has been great. I thank all of you for your kindness and patience as I work to get up to speed with all of the great things happening here at GMHC.

On February 1st, we celebrated with colleagues during a live video simulcast revealing the new MercyOne logo. 2 The Update | Spring 2019

The Update | Spring 2019 3

A Life Saving

SCREENING The begonia in Wynette Koehn’s kitchen towers over her. She started it from a 6” cutting ten years ago. As she nurtures it throughout the year, Wynette is rewarded with an abundance of colorful blooms. The begonia sits in Wynette’s kitchen, in front of a sliding glass door overlooking a large bird feeder. Wynette lives in the country south of Millville, and enjoys caring for her plants and feeding the birds. Wynette has been a patient at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics for a good 40 years. She had her first screening colonoscopy in 2007 and had no issues. In 2015, Wynette started feeling weak and had some pain in her stomach. She’d suffered previously from a bleeding ulcer, but this felt different. Her provider, Dr. Andrew Smith, scheduled an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy with Dr. Hugo, general surgeon, at GMHC. During the procedure, a tumor mass was discovered taking up 50% of her bowel. A biopsy determined the mass to be malignant and Wynette was referred to oncologist, Dr. Lawrence Kukla. She was scheduled for a major surgery, in Dubuque, for a total bowel reconstruction to remove the tumor, requiring her to be hospitalized for 2-3 weeks.

“I really preferred to stay closer to home,” commented Wynette. “So, I asked if there was any way to have the surgery at GMHC.” She was pleasantly surprised to be told not only could she have her surgery at GMHC, her surgery could also be performed laparoscopically by surgeon Dr. Tamara Holzer, reducing her hospital recovery stay to 3 days. “I’ll never forget Dr. Holzer was 9 months pregnant! In fact, she had her son just a few days after my surgery,” reflects Wynette. “My surgery went well, and I was compassionately cared for by people that I know. I just felt more comfortable in a smaller setting, being closer to home where my family and good friends could easily visit me.”

Following surgery, Wynette traveled to Dubuque every other week for six months for chemotherapy. Wynette is now cancer free. If her three year colonoscopy is clear, her next screening will be in five years. “I’m so thankful I have a family doctor that knows me personally, for the hospital and all of the services it offers to our community,” says Wynette.” When first asked about sharing her story, Wynette was apprehensive, but knew the importance of sharing it. As she gazed out the window at the birds, she said, “My second colonoscopy saved my life. Whether you’re at that special age of 45, have a family history, or are having symptoms, get your screening. It really is an easy procedure and a life saving one.”

small incisions. During a robotic-assisted surgical procedure, our surgeon sits at a console while viewing a high-definition, 3D image of the patient’s target anatomy. The surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements made at the console are translated into precise, real-time movement of surgical instruments attached to three robotic arms. Robotic-assisted surgery allows Dr. Mansfield and Dr. Holzer to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques.

PATIENT BENEFITS:
