Dear Friends,
It is with enormous joy in my heart, and more than just one tear in my eye, that I bid you WELCOME to the new Gulfshore Playhouse at the Baker Theatre and Education Center! This dream come true has been a long time coming. When I moved to this city twenty years ago and saw there was not a professional self-producing theatre, I decided to start one. Even as the idea was forming there were already questions: where to start, what to produce, and how could we possibly build a state-ofthe-art cultural center as our permanent home? The application for the 501(c)3 required I state my short and long-term goals. Short term: put on a play. Long term: THIS. I still possess the twenty-year-old ink-jet printed, water-stained piece of paper. Ask me and I’ll show you. What I envisioned back then and the reality of the building we’re in now are strikingly similar, only off by a few seats here and there. I had no idea how it would happen, when it would happen, or where it would happen…although I kept stepping out on the balcony of my apartment across the street in Bayfront and visualizing a theatre coming out of the land right – exactly where we are now. Here’s what I did know. I knew that if I kept the dream alive in my heart, and put one foot in front of the other day after day, the dream would one day be realized.
That’s where you came in.
We produced our first play. You came. We produced another play. You came and you brought more people with you. We asked for help, and you contributed. We told you about the big vision, and you supported this theatre in grand fashion. Together, we made this dream come true.
The goal has always been to build something beautiful, grand, artful, and fierce. To create an icon that would serve the city with engagement and rental spaces, peaceful gardens, and beautiful architecture, as much as it would serve up ART. Every choice we made was in service of the theatre and education we are here to produce. Every day my team and I are working tirelessly to serve you and all those in our region with world-class theatre at the highest level and incredible unique educational opportunities - a place to gather, meet friends, have drinks and great conversation…a place for you to call YOUR home for professional theatre.
Here we are! The stage is set and it’s time to shine. I sincerely hope you enjoy the show.
With gratitude,
Kristen Coury Founder, CEO & Producing Artistic Director
Dear Friends,
As the Chairman of the Board, I am honored to welcome you to the 20242025 season on behalf of the entire Board of Directors. Whether you are a long-time supporter or a first-time patron, I am thrilled you are joining us for this most auspicious season, our first in the Baker Theatre and Education Center.
Thank you for being an essential part of our community. We look forward to sharing more magic with you in the seasons to come!
From attending performances to spreading the word about our productions, your enthusiasm and passion inspire us every day. It is your belief in the power of professional theater that drives us to push boundaries and strive for excellence.
Gulfshore Playhouse has accomplished an incredible feat both locally and nationally with the construction of this building. It is a stunning reflection of the dedication and support of this community. I look forward to seeing how its presence shapes our entire region in the years to come.
Producing theatre of this magnitude is no simple task; it has required significant growth of the budget, staff, and resources of the organization. Everyone at Gulfshore Playhouse works tirelessly to create exceptional theatrical experiences. All of it is made possible through the excellence of the organizational leadership, the knowledgeable, generous, and engaged Board of Directors, the incredibly talented and ever-growing staff, the generous donors, and the curious and dedicated audience who make it all happen.
You may also notice that this building’s name is the Baker Theatre and Education Center because it is home to not only staged productions but also an expansive and growing education department. Gulfshore Playhouse Education serves thousands of people both in our community and nationally each year, through a variety of theatre-based programs. If you are curious about opportunities for yourself or the children in your life, I would encourage you to see what is being offered this season.
This is a difficult time for the arts in our nation, so it is especially incredible to see Gulfshore Playhouse thriving, and that is thanks to your continued support. The arts are a vital part of a flourishing community both culturally and economically. The impact of the Baker Theatre and Education Center will be felt across Southwest Florida and our nation as the organization continues to grow.
I hope you find this season inspiring, entertaining, and healing. Thank you for your continued support of Gulfshore Playhouse.
Enjoy the show!
Sincerely,

Gulfshore Playhouse is proud to shine a spotlight on Steve and Jane Akin, two of our most dedicated and influential supporters. As Season Angels, the Akins have played a pivotal role in every phase of our growth, from the art we present on stage to the diverse educational programs that reach audiences and students of all ages.
Steve Akin has been a steady and visionary leader at Gulfshore Playhouse since 2016, serving first as a Board Member and later as the Chairman of the Board. His natural leadership and business acumen have been integral to guiding the organization through its most transformative years. A former president of Fidelity Investments, Steve’s experience in business, finance, and strategy, as well as arts leadership, has helped build the foundation for Gulfshore Playhouse’s continued success.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, it is Steve’s deep love for the arts that truly sets him apart. He often credits his passion for theatre and the performing arts to his wife, Jane. A professional opera singer and pianist, Jane’s artistry and dedication to the cultural world have profoundly influenced their shared appreciation for the power of theatre to inspire, challenge, and uplift. Steve’s career called upon the family to move often. Jane’s artistic talents combined with Steve’s management and business skills gave them a way to work together to join and lead Arts organizations in many cities in the US such as the Mansfield Symphony, the Kansas City Lyric Opera, and the Boston Lyric Opera. Together, Steve and Jane have nurtured an environment of creativity, excellence, and community here at Gulfshore Playhouse.
The Akins’ unwavering commitment goes far beyond financial contributions. Their passion for the arts is evident in their involvement in every aspect of the organization’s work. Whether supporting productions, engaging with education programs, or sharing their expertise with the board and staff, Steve and Jane’s dedication is felt in every corner of Gulfshore Playhouse.
The Akin family’s connection to Gulfshore Playhouse runs even deeper—quite literally. Their three grandchildren are heavily involved in our Conservatory Programs and can frequently be seen on our stage, embodying the next generation of talented performers. The Akins’ commitment to nurturing young talent reflects their belief in the power of theatre to shape young lives and inspire future generations.
Gulfshore Playhouse is a centerpiece of the cultural fabric of Southwest Florida. It attracts residents, tourists and students to learn, enjoy great theatre, have an opportunity to see our world through different lenses, be a part of a community, and enhance our region’s economic activity. - The Akins
We are deeply grateful for their generosity, leadership, and love for the theatre. Thank you, Steve and Jane, for everything you do to make Gulfshore Playhouse a beacon of creativity and community.
Gulfshore Playhouse is pleased to showcase Season Benefactors Karen and Gary Gregg. The Greggs stepped up their giving this year to provide instrumental support during The Playhouse’s pivotal first season in its new home. Their generosity helps to ensure that the theatre remains a thriving cultural institution for our region.
Karen and Gary have become increasingly enthusiastic members of the Gulfshore Playhouse family over the past ten years as they transitioned their residency from Boston to Naples, where they were 30-plus year subscribers and supporters of the Huntington Theatre. Gary is a retired senior executive from the Liberty Mutual Group, also based in Boston, and he and Karen were involved in numerous cultural and civic organizations over many years there.
As is evident from their long association with professional theatre, they are avid fans of live performance and its ability to connect, inspire and transform. Their belief in the importance of regional theatre is evident and their generous support helps fuel the vitality of our productions and educational programs, ensuring that Gulfshore Playhouse continues offering our vibrant community the best in live theatre.
Thank you, Karen and Gary, for your belief in the mission of Gulfshore Playhouse and for your enduring commitment to our wonderful community.
We strongly believe that in this digital age, the power of live professional theatre has never been more important, and we are proud to support Gulfshore Playhouse. - The Greggs

I am so excited to be welcomed back to Gulfshore Playhouse and to be a part of this season in this gorgeous new building! While working on Into the Breeches last season, I got to experience what many of you already know - Gulfshore Playhouse is a magical place. Led by the extraordinary Kristen Coury, this is a theater company where people want to be, staff and audiences alike, and where compelling stories are told beautifully and with great theatrical flair. When Kristen asked if I’d like to direct Dial M for Murder, I jumped at the chance. And speaking of jumping...if I do my job well, you too will be jumping - right out of your seats. I have recently directed Mousetrap, Wait Until Dark, and Misery and am now in love with the thriller genre. It’s an incredible challenge for a director to craft the production in such a way where you’re dropping clues for the audience, but never giving it totally away. When you get it right, there’s nothing like watching the audience thrilled and engaged. We have brought together a stunning group of actors and designers who can’t wait to tell this story where you may know who did it, but you don’t know if they will get away with it or not. This play has it all treachery, artistic jealousy, humor, infidelity, passionate true love, revenge and murder. What could be a better way to celebrate the holidays!

Crime fiction is as old as fiction itself, which may come as a bit of a surprise to those of us who consider it a more modern genre. But there are stories from multiple ancient cultures, like One Thousand and One Nights, that feature exactly what we expect to find in an Agatha Christie novel or see on an episode of “Law & Order: SVU” An unimaginable crime. A likely suspect. An unlikely perpetrator. An intrepid detective determined to catch the killer.
It’s a formula that’s repeated enough that you’d think we would grow tired of it. In fact, people had gotten a bit tired of it by the time Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder first hit the stage in 1952.
Though the genre has been around in some form or another for thousands of years, the Golden Age of crime fiction spanned from the 1920s to the early 1950s. This is largely thanks to the ‘Queens of Crime:’ Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham, and Ngaio Marsh. The popularity of the genre was “forged in the crucible of human suffering in the Great War and the Great Depression,” writes essayist Joanne Drayton in her article, ‘How the Queens of Crime Fiction Developed a Modern Myth.’ Compared to the horrors of war and daily economic hardship, one might even call it cozy to escape into a world where the only problem was a single, premeditated murder where good was almost always guaranteed to triumph over evil.
However, the Golden Age was winding to a close in the years following World War II. Historian Ian Ousby writes,
“Where it had once been commonplace to view the Golden Age as a high watermark of achievement, it became equally the fashion to denounce it. It had, so the indictment ran, followed rules which trivialized its subject. It had preferred settings which expressed a narrow, if not deliberately elitist, vision of society. And for heroes it had created detectives at best two-dimensional, at worst tiresome.”
However, the genre as a whole had hardly gone out of style. When conventions are established, that creates ample opportunity for others to break them like Frederick Knott’s masterpiece, Dial M for Murder, which presents a suspenseful scenario where the question isn’t ‘who?’, but rather, ‘how?’
Frederick Knott was a “notoriously un-prolific playwright” but what he lacked in quantity, he more than made up for in quality. Born in Hankow, China in 1919 to Quaker missionaries, Knott’s love of theatre came from watching performances of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas as a child. He served in the Royal Artillery in World War II, and it was after his service that he retreated to a cottage in Sussex and emerged 18 months later with the completed script of Dial M for Murder. Knott told The New York Times in 1961:
“I was always intrigued with the idea that somebody would plan a crime, and then you see that everything doesn’t turn out right. You can plan a murder in great detail and then put the plan into action and invariably something goes wrong and then you have to improvise, and in the improvisation, you trip up and make a very big mistake.”
However, the BBC broadcast did get Knott to his first stage production in London and it opened to critical acclaim. A subsequent Broadway production played at the Plymouth Theatre for 552 performances. Over the next five years, the play was produced in 30 countries. Considering we are here today watching a production of this story over 70 years later, it’s safe to say that Mr. MacLeod sorely misjudged how much ‘interest’ there would be in the play.
Knott worked closely with Alfred Hitchcock on the screenplay for the 1954 film. The film was Hitchcock’s only film conceived and filmed in 3D, a technology studios were employing to attract audiences since the experience couldn’t be replicated on home televisions. But 3D as a medium had fallen out of favor by the time the film was released in 1954, and after many audience complaints, it was exclusively shown in 2D. Dial M was overshadowed by the release of Rear Window just a few months later, but the film is still fondly remembered for its innovative, theatrical feeling since the overwhelming majority of the film is set within the Wendice apartment, just as the play is.
After Dial M’s runaway success, Knott only wrote two more plays, Write Me a Murder in 1961, and Wait Until Dark in 1966.
“After six or seven hard years of politics, and pandemic, and everything – where facts are hard to nail down and truth is malleable – people like the idea of a thriller that promises we are going to nail down the facts … we are going to catch the killer and that killer will be punished in one way or another. In one sense, it’s a reaction to these very queasy times that we live in. And also, it’s comfort food. So, I think the job of an adaptation like this is to be comfort food with some twists and turns that are new.”
Sounds familiar to the same cultural and societal feeling that gave rise to mystery’s Golden Age, doesn’t it? Even today, 12.5% of all adult books sold in the United States belong to the crime/thriller genre. Agatha Christie has sold over 2 billion books, only outsold by Shakespeare and the Bible. Adaptations of her work on screen and stage only continue to be made. We may not be in the historical ‘Golden Age,’ but it hardly seems our appetite for the genre is going anywhere fast.
Knott was turned down by seven London producers, including August MacLeod who stated that “the play as a whole would cause little interest.” The story might have disappeared for good if it hadn’t been for the BBC who offered to adapt it into a 90-minute television play in 1952, earning rave reviews. One of the television program’s viewers was an agent to film producer Alexander Korda who advised him to obtain the film rights, which he managed to do for a mere £1,000. Korda later turned around and sold those rights to Warner Brothers for upwards of $200,000.
When playwright Jeffrey Hatcher was commissioned by the Old Globe to adapt the original text a few years ago, he was initially hesitant because it was already “the perfect play.” However, he took on the challenge, seeing it as an opportunity to update some of the relationships and tightening the plot. Just like the first time, this new iteration of Dial M for Murder became a runaway hit, produced on stages all across America. When asked his thoughts about the play’s popularity, Hatcher said:
Fiction has gifted us with numerous iconic detectives and wonderful stories. Can you solve the mystery of which detective belongs to which story?

Virgil Tibbs
Nancy Drew Miss Marple
Sherlock Holmes
Hercule Poirot
Inspector Jacques Clouseau
