Except I totally did, but that’s how author Rick Riordan kicked off The Lightning Thief twenty years ago (exactly–the novel was originally published June 28, 2005. Everyone say, “Happy Anniversary!”) and revolutionized literature for middle grade audiences. While it took elementary school-aged John another year or so to pick it up, the further adventures of Percy Jackson and his friends have been a constant in my life for the past two decades, from studying the Hero’s Journey in
Look,Ididn’twant tobeahalf-blood. “ “
high school literature classes, to seeking out comfort during a global pandemic (you know the one) and various periods of transition in my life (I may have listened to all fifteen of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, and The Trials of Apollo audiobooks while moving from Greensboro, North Carolina, back home to Nashville, Tennessee, then on to Naples, Florida, in the summer of 2022.)
From my first meetings with the Education and Artistic teams at Gulfshore Playhouse regarding productions we wished to see our students perform, The Lightning Thief has always been one of the first titles out of my mouth. I love providing an opportunity for kids to play kids on stage, allowing them to bring in their lived experiences to inform their interpretation of a character. This story is a beautiful celebration of the unique gifts everyone brings to this quest called life and a powerful reminder that we are stronger together than we are alone.
This musical was originally developed as a part of the Free Summer Theatre series out of TheatreWorksUSA, a professional theatre for young and family audiences based in New York City.
From there, The Lightning Thief hit the road on a national tour, delighting family audiences across the country before returning to New York City for its Broadway run in 2019. Baked into the formula for the show’s charm are its humble beginnings: a musical that invites audiences of all ages to lean in and imagine what is possible.
Now,let’sgoonakillerquest!
