Patty & Jay Baker Season Angels

Over the past two decades, Patty and Jay Baker have played an instrumental role in creating the Naples we call home today. Their commitment to this community is evident not just through their philanthropy, but also in their active involvement in the organizations they support. The Bakers are pillars of the community and have positively impacted it in myriad ways. You can find their name attached to the Naples Community Hospital, the Baker Senior Center, Baker Park, the Humane Society, and numerous arts organizations. Gulfshore Playhouse is incredibly grateful to be among them.

It’s not about how much you give, but that you give and that you’re part of this valuable community asset.
-Jay Baker

Our new home, The Baker Theatre and Education Center, is a testament to their passion and commitment to theatre and to Gulfshore Playhouse.

The Bakers’ relationship with Gulfshore Playhouse first began in 2009, as early believers in founder Kristen Coury’s vision to create a permanent, iconic home for Gulfshore Playhouse.

In 2016, we publicly launched the Next Stage Capital Campaign by announcing the Baker’s vanguard $10 million matching gift. Not content to stop there, they pledged another $10 million matching gift in 2021, further galvanizing the entire community to join them in turning this dream into reality.

What sets the Bakers apart is not just the scale of their giving, but their active involvement in the causes they support. Patty and Jay believe in living their legacy and “feathering where they nest”. They have demonstrated their commitment to Gulfshore Playhouse in myriad ways. Patty has shared her experience as a Tony Award®-winning Broadway producer and serves on our Board of Directors. Patty and Jay chaired our annual Gala in 2022 and, over the years, have introduced countless friends and community members to Gulfshore Playhouse.

Their lives exemplify this philosophy in general. They are not just donors; they are true champions of the Naples community, fostering a culture of giving that will resonate for generations to come. Through their generosity and involvement, they have not only enriched the lives of countless individuals but have also ensured that the arts, healthcare, and community services in Naples will continue to thrive.

The Baker Theatre and Education Center stands as a symbol of their enduring legacy—a place where dreams come to life where magic happens and where their impact will be eternally felt.

Notably, Jason Korn, a partner at the Naples office, has served for 16 years on our Board of Directors and played a pivotal role in our growth. D irector’s Note

I am writing this on the eve of our first rehearsal for Anything Goes, and I am truly bursting with joy and anticipation. This will be the largest show we’ve ever produced at Gulfshore Playhouse in every way, and all of that is possible because we are now in the Baker Theatre and Education Center. I am looking forward to the rehearsal process immensely, utilizing our spacious and bright rehearsal rooms and seeing them full of dancers leaping and tapping up a storm. The set you will see on stage is double the size of anything we’ve ever done before, on top of moving scenery and gorgeous, “plane-free” acoustics!

It’s been an absolute delight to work on this show. It’s easy to think of Anything Goes as an “old chestnut” with no relevance in the modern world considering it was written 90 years ago. However, what this process has uncovered is just how familiar their lives and challenges are to us today. They are falling in love, worrying about whether their stock has risen or fallen, and they’re fascinated with celebrity criminals. “Times have changed” as Cole Porter writes in the titular song, but have they changed as much as we think?

Anything Goes is reminiscent of a vaudeville show or a musical revue, with quick scenes that build up to incredible numbers featuring songs you know and love, incredible dance routines, and phenomenal acting all the way. Because this is not only the largest production we’ve ever produced, it is also the largest show I’ve ever directed. I surrounded myself with the most amazing creative team of designers plus music director Trevor Pierce, choreographer Sara Brians, associate director Dann Dunn, and the wonderful Production Stage Manager Danny Kuenzel. All have lent their expertise and creativity to this effort in glorious fashion. Each are incredibly talented, driven, gracious, and full of good ideas. Their version of “good” is as close to perfection as I’ve ever seen and I consider myself lucky to work with them and this phenomenal cast. My biggest thanks go to the Gulfshore Playhouse staff who somehow moved us into the building, got the show onstage, and kept the boat afloat all with dedication and good humor.

I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it! All aboard as we set sail on our maiden voyage together!

About the Authors

Cole Porter (Playwright) was born in Peru, Indiana in 1891 and died in Hollywood 73 years later. In between, he wrote some of the most memorable songs ever heard on stage or screen, among them “Night and Day,” “Begin the Beguine,” “You’re The Top,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Love For Sale,” and “Just One of Those Things.” During the 1930s, his most productive decade, he provided a series of sparkling scores for such hits as Gay Divorce ; Anything Goes; Jubilee ; Born to Dance; and Red, Hot and Blue. Despite a crippling riding accident in 1937 which left him in constant pain, he achieved his greatest commercial success in 1948, with Kiss Me, Kate. His name remains synonymous with wit and sophistication to this day.

P.G. Wodehouse (Author) and Guy Bolton (Author) were both born in England. They were introduced by Jerome Kern, and he suggested they all work together. They did, tirelessly, and in the beginning of their collaboration wrote nearly one show per month: the famed Princess Theatre musicals. Bolton and Wodehouse went on to write more than 20 musicals together. Usually, they collaborated on the book, and Wodehouse wrote the lyrics. Both lived into their nineties, and both, together and individually, were astoundingly prolific. Bolton, with one collaborator or another, or on his own, had a hand in well over 100 musicals and straight plays as well as numerous film scripts and novels. Wodehouse wrote 97 books, most notably, the Jeeves novels and countless short stories, articles, essays and films. In 1975, he was knighted side by side with Charlie Chaplin. In addition to Anything Goes, their work together includes Have A Heart ; Oh, Boy!; Leave It To Jane; Oh, Lady! Lady!; Sitting Pretty ; Oh, Kay! and Rosalie. They remained friends and neighbors (in Remsenburg, New York) throughout their final days.

Howard Lindsay (Author) was an actor, stage manager, director and playwright before teaming up with Russel Crouse. Lindsay and Crouse’s partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for more than 28 years. The two men first joined forces in 1934, when the producer Vinton Freedley brought them together to rewrite the libretto for Anything Goes, which Lindsay directed. Two years later, they wrote another Cole Porter show, Red, Hot and Blue. Their first straight play, Life with Father, opened in 1936 and holds the record fir the longest running play on Broadway, at 3,224 performances. Lindsay and his wife, Dorothy Stickney, created the roles of Clarence and Vinnie Day, performing them for five years. Among other shows, Lindsay and Crouse also wrote The Sound of Music (score by Rodgers and Hammerstein), the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union, Call me Madam ,and Mr. President (scores by Irving Berlin); The Prescott Proposals and The Great Sebastians. They produced The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace

Russel Crouse (Author) was a newspaperman, a press agent for the Theatre Guild, the author of several books and a librettist before partnering with Howard Lindsay. Their first straight play, Life with Father, opened in 1936 and holds the record for the longest running play on Broadway, at 3,224 performances. Among other shows, Lindsay and Crouse also wrote The Sound of Music (score by Rodgers and Hammerstein), the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union, Call Me Madam ,and Mr. President (scores by Irving Berlin), The Prescott Proposals ,and The Great Sebastians. They produced The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace. In addition to his work with Lindsay, Russel Crouse later reproduced, in collaboration with his wife, Anna Erskine Crouse, a son, the writer Timothy Crouse, and a daughter, the actress Lindsay Crouse.

Timothy Crouse (Author) has been a contributing editor of Rolling Stone and The Village Voice, as well as the Washington columnist for Esquire, writing numerous articles for these other publications, including the New Yorker. He is the author of The Boys on the Bus, a classic account of the role of the press in presidential campaigns. With Luc Brebion he translated Roger Martin du Gard’s Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort (Knopf, 2000). He is currently writing short stories, one of which, “Sphinxes,” was included in the O Henry Prize Stories 2005. He is the son of one of the original authors of Anything Goes, Russel Crouse.

John Weidman (Author) wrote the book for Pacific Overtures (Tony® nominations, Best Book and Musical), score by Stephen Sondheim, produced and directed by Harold Prince. He co-authored the Tony Award®-winning 1987 revival of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes and wrote the book for Assassins, score by Stephen Sondheim, directed Off-Broadway by Jerry Zaks and in London’s West End (Drama Critics’ Award for Best Musical) by Sam Mendes. Weidman’s other musicals include Big: The Musical, Contact, Road Show, and Happiness. Since 1986 he has written for Sesame Street, receiving seven Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing. In 1996 he was awarded the Kleban Award and, from 1999 to 2009, he served as president of the Dramatists Guild.

Anything Goes

Dramaturgical Notes

Anything Goes is about as classic as the American musical gets. In 1934, the year Anything Goes was first produced, the ‘book musical’ as we know it today was still a relatively new invention. In the early part of the 20th century, the United States— New York City in particular—was a melting pot, with many cultures blending together to create something entirely new. So too was the musical, an entirely new and uniquely American art form that emerged from a synthesis of other popular forms of entertainment such as vaudeville, minstrel shows, and operettas, combined with the distinctly American musical genres of jazz and ragtime that defined Roaring Twenties culture.

After a booming beginning, the still nascent Broadway hit its first major hurdle as the Great Depression sunk its claws into American life and nearly destroyed the industry. During the Depression, audiences sought out escapism and light-hearted fare so they were drawn to musical comedies. Few shows exceeded 500 performances (Anything Goes ran for 422). Spectacle, song, and dance were the top priorities of the 1930s musical comedy and the plot was usually a secondary focus, constructed primarily to move from number to number.

Anything Goes is the epitome of 1930s musical comedies, and it is certainly one of the most iconic. But the Anything Goes you will be seeing today isn’t exactly the same as the Anything Goes audiences nearly 100 years ago would’ve seen. It’s a Frankenstein of a musical; songs have been added and removed, lines deleted

and rearranged, characters’ names changed, and more.

Its shape-shifting nature feels fitting given how it was made. The story begins, naturally, at sea with a Broadway producer named Vinton Freedley. After years of successfully producing Broadway shows, he’d run aground with a Broadway flop called Pardon My English in 1933. Freedley laid low out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to escape the creditors snapping at his heels. It’s said that this is where Freedley came up with the seeds of a story that eventually grew into Anything Goes.

At that time, Broadway producers typically recruited the stars of a musical before there was even a script. The script would then be shaped around their onstage personalities. Freedley was in desperate need of a guaranteed hit, so he recruited the most coveted names in show business: William Gaxton, Victor Moore, and Ethel Merman. To write the book, he chose P.G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton. The Gershwins were his frequent collaborators, but they were committed to Porgy & Bess, so Freedley chose Cole Porter instead.

At that time, Cole Porter was on his own watery adventure, taking a luxurious cruise down the Rhine. Nevertheless, Freedley got an early script to him and just a few weeks later, they met at a hotel in London. Porter showed up with songs that Freedley “fell in love with” upon first hearing.

The original Wodehouse and Bolton script ultimately bears little resemblance to the show we know as Anything Goes, including its name which was not decided until late in the process. While the original story was set aboard a luxury liner, it featured numerous elements that did not make it. The largest lost storyline was a fake bomb threat, which was removed two days before the start of rehearsals after a reallife disaster: the Morro Castle, a pleasure ship, wrecked in the Atlantic, killing 132 people.

That was just the first of many challenges. Freedly was displeased with the script, so he recruited director Howard Lindsay and his writing partner, Russel Crouse, to rework it. The new story, which reportedly kept fewer than a dozen lines from the original, was structured around Cole Porter’s music. The ship setting remained because the set pieces were already built.

By the time rehearsals began, only a portion of the first act was completed, and the second act hadn’t been written at all. Everything was in such a state of flux that the show still didn’t have an ending by its Boston tryouts. Even just one of these issues might spell disaster, especially to us modern day theatremakers, but Anything Goes opened at the Alvin Theater on November 21, 1934 and was incredibly well-received.

The 1920s and 1930s were periods of major social upheaval in the United States sandwiched between two major global conflicts. Musicals of this period found a unique way to address the concerns of the day. Stanley Green wrote about

this era of musical theatre in his 1971 book Ring Bells! Sing Songs!:

“The musical theatre – the most opulent, escapist, extravagant, and unabashedly commercial form of the theatre – could not hide from what was going on. Of course, it could still provide relief from reality. It could still offer evenings of mirth and song and glamour. But it showed a growing awareness of its own unique ability to make telling comments on such issues of the day….It discovered that a song lyric, a tune, a wisecrack, a bit of comic business, a dance routine could say things with even more effectiveness than many a serious-minded drama simply because the appeal was to a far wider spectrum of the theatergoing public.”

While Anything Goes might seem on the surface like a purely light-hearted musical, it’s as full of satire and social commentary as it is of iconic music, thrilling spectacle, and outright hilarity. So much of it feels like it could’ve been written yesterday, so we continue to return to this sterling classic 90 years later and will continue to for many years to come.

A 21st Century Guide to You’re the Top

The legacy of Anything Goes largely lives in its iconic Cole Porter score, many of the songs becoming national hits. Perhaps the most popular song from the show is “You’re the Top.” It was so popular at the time that hundreds of parodies were written about it.

There are a few references made in the song that might be unfamiliar to our modern ears. But have no fear! Here is a friendly guide to help put you in the shoes of a 1930s theatregoer.

You’re the top!

You’re the Coliseum.

You’re the top!

You’re the Louvr’ Museum

You’re a melody from a symphony by Strauss You’re a Bendel bonnet

Henri Bendel was a Manhattan department store. A bonnet (hat) from Bendel’s would’ve been the height of 1930s fashion.

A Shakespeare sonnet,

You’re Mickey Mouse

You’re the Nile

You’re the Tow’r of Pisa

You’re the smile on the Mona Lisa

I’m a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop; But if, baby, I’m the bottom

You’re the top!

Your words poetic are not pathetic

On the other hand, babe, you shine And I can feel after ev’ry line

A thrill divine

Down my spine.

Now gifted humans like Vincent Youmans

An American Broadway composer and producer who collaborated with all the greatest lyricists on Broadway.

Might think that your song is bad, But I got a notion

I’ll second the motion

And this is what I’m going to add:

You’re the top!

You’re Mahatma Gandhi

You’re the top!

You’re Napoleon brandy.

You’re the purple light of a summer night in

Spain

You’re the National Gall’ry

You’re Garbo’s sal’ry

After the success of Flesh and the Devil (1927), Greta Garbo demanded MGM raise her salary from $600/week to $5,000/week. Louis B. Mayer resisted, so Garbo sailed back to Sweden until he relented. In today’s dollars, this salary would equate to $4.6 million a year.

You’re cellophane.

Though commonplace to us today, it was considered a modern marvel 100 years ago.

You’re sublime

You’re turkey dinner.

You’re the time

Of the derby winner.

I’m a toy balloon that’s fated soon to pop; But if, baby, I’m the bottom, you’re the top!

You’re the top!

You’re an Arrow collar.

Arrow collars were detachable shirt collars manufactured by Cluett Peabody. They are especially notable for their iconic advertising campaign featuring “The Arrow Collar Man,” depicting rugged masculinity.

You’re the top!

You’re a Coolidge dollar.

This refers to the strong value of the dollar during Calvin Coolidge’s presidency, just before the Stock Market Crash of 1929.

You’re the nimble tread of the feet of Fred Astaire, You’re an O’Neill drama,

You’re Whistler’s mama,

A colloquial name for Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 by James McNeill Whistler, an 1871 painting of his mother.

You’re Camembert

You’re a rose,

You’re Inferno’s Dante,

You’re the nose

On the great Durante.

A comedian and performer Jimmy Durante is known for his distinctive gravelly speech, Lower East Side accent, comedy, and prominent nose, which he referred to as the schnozzola.

I’m just in the way, as the French would say “De trop,”

But if, baby, I’m the bottom

You’re the top

You’re the top!

You’re a dance in Bali. You’re the top!

You’re a hot tamale.

You’re an angel, you, simply too, too, too diveen, You’re a Botticelli,

You’re Keats, You’re Shelley, You’re Ovaltine.

You’re a boon,

You’re the dam at Boulder

You’re the moon over Mae West’s shoulder.

Mae West, referenced twice in Anything Goes, was a prominent American actress and sex symbol who was admired greatly by the Depression-era audience.

I’m the nominee of the G.O.P. Or Gop!

But if, baby, I’m the bottom, you’re the top.

You’re the top!

You’re a Waldorf salad

You’re the top!

You’re a Berlin ballad

to the work of Irving

You’re the boats that glide on the sleepy Zuider Zee. You’re an old Dutch master, You’re Lady Astor You’re broccoli.

You’re romance,

You’re the steppes of Russia, You’re the pants on a Roxy usher.

The Roxy Theatre, aka ‘the Cathedral of motion pictures’ in Manhattan, was known for its squad of trained ushers who acted and dressed like an army platoon. Their pants were known to be very tight.

I’m a broken doll, a fol-de-rol, a blop.

But if, baby, I’m the bottom, you’re the top!

Remember: The Story of Abe Price

Remember: The Story of Abe Price by Jeffrey Binder, an original play based on a true story, is brought to you in partnership with The Holocaust Museum and Cohen Education Center.

At just 16-years-old, Abraham Piasecki’s life is uprooted by the Nazi invasion of Poland. From living in the ghetto of Kielce to imprisonment at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Remember brings to life the harrowing true story of a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi captivity five times. This immersive, challenging, and ultimately captivating story of resilience brings us into one man’s memories and asks us to never forget.
