Entire hills made of chocolate are either the stuff of dreams or nightmares (depending on your sweet tooth and self-control). The Filipino Chocolate Hills, though, are not related to any cocoa-based indulgences. Instead, they’re a group of more than 1,000 hills on the island of Bohol and a spectacular natural wonder. So-called because of their chocolatey hue outside the rainy season, the rolling, surreal mounds smoothed by thousands of years of erosion have an almost playful aspect, much like many Filipinos themselves, who are renowned for their cheery social dispositions. However, the overwhelming sense of friendliness is not the Philippines’ only major attraction. Across its 7,107 islands, many of which are uninhabited, it’s a country that boasts excellent surfing, superb scuba diving, pristine white beaches, a perfect volcano (more on that later) and, in the case of the party island of Boracay, a boatload of karaoke-filled fun.

While the Philippines may not enjoy the tourism profile of some of its regional rivals, such as Thailand, it does offer its own vibrant cuisine, competitively low prices and a uniquely Christian culture in a part of the world that’s predominantly Buddhist. And with such an abundance of islands, it’s a destination that offers strikingly different experiences. Just a short 45-minute flight from Manila is the island of Boracay. Visit during the earlier months of the year and you’ll find the streets awash with water sports fanatics keen to catch their kite, surfing and wind surfing fix. Sports aside, a trip to Boracay can be a bit like being on a permanent spring break. Party animals congregate, kick off their flip flops and dance to music on the beach with countless other travellers. Commercialised to the point of having a giant beachside branch of McDonalds, plus a Starbucks and a Pizza Hut, Boracay is the polar opposite of a deserted island paradise. Yet, despite the fast food invasion and plethora of karaoke bars and nightspots, it remains extremely popular with backpackers and tourists all flocking there to kick back on the famous powder white beaches and soak in the tropical waters. A place that proudly touts itself as “Asia’s 24-hour party island”, Boracay isn’t just about hedonism and socialising. Further north, Puka Beach and IligIligan Beach offer a more tranquil respite

from the crowds and while corporations may have encroached on the island, the crystal clear tropical waters and spectacular sunsets remain — making the island one of the best destinations for a sundowner party this side of Ibiza. The Philippines might do karaoke and beach bars with panache, but it’s also home to some spectacular wildlife and being an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, naturally a significant portion of this involves marine life. Strap on a regulator and hitch a lift to the scuba diving spots and reefs off the islands of Palawan.

MASSKARA FESTIVAL October 16 sees the town of Bacolod on Negros Island host the MassKara Festival. MassKara is a derivative of the English word mass, and the Spanish word cara, which means face. In keeping with its title, the event sees the town’s fun-loving local population descend on the streets en masse wearing colourful face masks. Conceived in the 1980s, at a time of hardship, the purpose of wearing the cheerful masks is to remind the population to remain positive and live up to their home town’s reputation as The City of Smiles.
The winner of last year’s Conde Naste Readers’ Best Island in the World award (no mean feat when you’re up against Australia, Thailand and Malaysia), Palawan’s beaches offer deserted Instagram-ready white sands and worldclass snorkelling and scuba diving conditions, with crystal clear azure waters. The main island is also home to Asia’s longest subterranean river and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — The Puerto Princesa — an eight-kilometre natural wonder of underground chambers, caves, stalagmites and stalactites. Regularly described as the Last Frontier of the Philippines, in light of its location at the edges of the country’s territory, Palawan’s profile is undoubtedly increasing but it remains comparatively under the radar next to Boracay. The kudos of the world’s best island is not the Philippines’ only global accolade though. Curiously, it also boasts the world’s only perfect volcano. While perfect might not be the most appropriate description for a natural phenomenon that has a tendency to erupt hot lava (locals were forced to evacuate last year), based on the symmetrical shape and its stereotypically volcano-like

appearance (just ask a kid to draw one), the Mayon Volcano is regarded as just that. Located on Luzon — the same island as Manila, the Mayon Volcano stretches to a staggering 2,462 metres tall and sits majestically above the surrounding flatlands. There’s even a chance to climb it, when the risk of eruption is low, although it’s mandatory to do so with a guide. The Philippines only gained recognition as an independent state in the 1940s, whereas the rocks of the Mayon Volcano date back more than 20 million years. Comparatively it’s a nation very much in its infancy, but with such an abundance of attractions, like the Mayon, it’s not a case of if the Philippines will erupt on to the global tourism map but when. n GULF AIR operates seven weekly flights to Manila. LI RIVER CHINA Cormorant fishing on the Li River is a dying art. Employing techniques passed down over thousands of years, the fishermen use aquatic birds called cormorants to fish. They tie a thread around the birds’ necks to prevent them from swallowing the catch. The cormorants dive into the river prompted by the fishermen’s chants, are brought back to the boat with the help of a pole once they have caught fish and then made to spit them out. An amazing interaction between humans and nature, the practice couldn’t compete with modern fishing techniques and is now performed mostly for tourists.

Sitting on a corner of the historic Balchug district, this grand hotel with a façade dating back to 1898 is situated in the heart of Moscow, directly opposite the Kremlin, Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral. The building served as a government office after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and a foreign ministry hostel during the Second World War, but was eventually renovated to become Russia’s first international five-star property — the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow — in 1992. Today, the interior is a mix of classic and contemporary, from the lobby’s elegant spiral staircase with a wrought-iron balustrade to the Italian marble columns and oversized chandeliers custommade from Murano glass. With 227 rooms, many with 4-metre-high ceilings, and 35 suites, some of which have been designed by members of the British royal family, the hotel is an updated Moscow treasure with a storied past.

What we loved The views from our riverside room were fantastic, especially of the dazzling St Basil’s Cathedral whether cast in the morning light or lit up in the evening. One of Russia’s most recognisable structures, it sits across from the hotel on the other side of the Moskva River and Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge. The hotel’s location is great, set in the historic part of the city with the Kremlin, Lenin’s Tomb, Red Square and GUM shopping centre also just over the bridge.

The end of the month sees the finale of Expo Milan 2015. The six-month exhibition, which opened on May 1, is expected to attract 20 million visitors to the city, with more than 140 countries, including Bahrain, participating in the event. Themed Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, the show explores the science, technology, customs and ideas surrounding our relationship with food — an increasingly important issue as the global population increases and resources are stretched. The exhibition site covers more than 1.1 million square metres and the Italian government has invested heavily in improving the city’s infrastructure to accommodate the additional visitors, to the irritation of many of its citizens. As a city, while Milan may not elicit the cultural praise heaped on Venice, Florence or Rome, scratch the industrial

The foremost focal point for visitors is Milan’s famous Duomo or cathedral, in the Piazza del Duomo. A pharaonicsized, neo-classical masterpiece (it’s the fifth-largest church in the world), although Oscar Wilde described the building as “monstrous and inartistic”, it remains an incredible feat of craftsmanship and skill, taken to awe-inspiring proportions. Not far from the cathedral is the city’s famous Opera House, the Teatro alla Scala, where the season runs from December to July in a building that dates back to 1778. What was the highlight of your time in Milan? I love the food and the overall atmosphere, but mostly it’s the people watching. You’ll see 80-year-old grannies in couture, men in colourful sharp suits and models strutting along with tiny dogs.
The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, housed at the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie. For more contemporary tastes, Milan’s excellent Museo del Novecento houses modern works by, among others, Picasso, Matisse and the influential Italian sculptor and painter Umberto Boccioni. A wealth of culture may be the subplot, but the central theme of many visitor’s Milan experience lies in the fashion and designer labels. Appropriately, Milan is home to one of the oldest and most recognisable shopping arcades in the world; the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Opened in 1877, the glass-domed arcade sits between the city’s Duomo and opera house and, due to the impressive design, is a tourist attraction in its own right. Luxury shops line the arcade, selling everything from haute couture to jewellery and art. In 2012, a certain American burger chain (think
golden arches) was prevented from renewing its lease as it was deemed too common for such a refined location by authorities. Typically Milanese, the locals are likely to insist their cuisine is far above US multinational fast-food efforts. Any carnivores should head straight to Ribot in Milan’s San Siro neighbourhood, near the famous football stadium of the same name — a culinary stalwart in the city for more than 30 years. For an awardwinning experience, Michelin-star eatery Ristorante d'O is commendably affordable and located just outside town. Head there (you'll need to make a reservation) and you'll get to share a dining room with the Milanese, dressed in their fittingly fashionable finery.

What insider tips would you offer visitors to the city? If you order a drink at a bar you also get small sandwiches and cuts of meat and cheese, so you don’t need to order food. Don’t forget to check www.airbnb.com, where you can book a stay in private houses — you find amazing little places and it’s often cheaper than hotels. I had a great place in Navigli district, set amid vintage stores and buskers, right on the canal. Where would you recommend going for drinks and a bite to eat? For me it’s Navigli — it’s the place to be. Young people meet to play backgammon and there are literally dozens of dining spots lining the canal. What did you make of the fashion in the city and do you think it’s important to pack a trendy outfit? You need to dress up because everyone else does — even grandmas. But it’s chic, comfortable fashion; not high heels because there are cobbled streets. I just wore my cute Bensimon tennis shoes the whole time. Where would you go to pick up a fashion bargain? The flea markets are cool because it’s not only clothes on sale – it’s food too. The best factory outlet to go to is Fashion Outlet il Salvagente, where you’ll find brands like Manolo Blahnik, Fendi and Moschino. It’s 70 per cent cheaper than the shops. Get a taxi there and go early.

Andy Hallbery previews the final round of the FIA World Endurance Championship coming to Bahrain next month
The grand finale of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) hits the tracks in Bahrain on November 21, bringing the cream of sportscar racing from the four corners of the globe to the Middle East. The 6 Hours of Bahrain race may well settle the destiny of the World Championship titles too, as it goes from daylight through dusk into darkness across the first-class facilities of the Bahrain International Circuit. The six-hour long endurance event is the culmination of an eight-round series, the crown jewel of which is the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Globally renowned manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Ferrari, Nissan, Aston Martin and Chevrolet will be represented at the day/night race and many of their technologically advanced machines will be driven by well-known Formula 1 drivers including Mark Webber, Alexander Wurz, Kazuki Nakajima, Nick Heidfeld and Anthony Davidson to take on dedicated sportscar specialists. The WEC allows manufacturers to showcase their skills in researching and building new, environmentally friendly technologies such as hybrid and kinetic energy recovery systems. Several of these are either being developed or have already found their way to the companies’ production lines. The championship also focuses on teamwork not just among the drivers but also the crew who spring into action during the

mid-race stops to refuel the cars, change tyres and facilitate driver changes. A maximum of four team members can work on the car while it’s in the pit lane and with every split second being vital, the stops are choreographed and rehearsed over and over again in the quest for victory. Le Mans Prototype class 1 (LMP1) cars are the vehicles of choice for the fastest racers, with some that can reach speeds of over 335km/h on the long flat-out sections of Le Mans, and around 322km/h on Bahrain’s straights. Toyota was the champion team last year with its pair of ex-F1 stars, Davidson and Sebastian Buemi, claiming the drivers’ title. Over the winter, both Audi (champions in 2012 and 2013) and Porsche (it returned to LMP1 in 2014) made large strides with their cars. Fellow ex-F1 driver Webber shares the No.17 Porsche 919 Hybrid with Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley. Audi won the first two races of the season with drivers André Lotterer, Marcel Fässler and Benoît Tréluyer. But it was Porsche that took the spoils at 24 Hours of Le Mans, with its guest car driven by current Sahara Force India Formula 1 German star

The competition at the front is fast and furious, but the WEC is known for much more than just the LMP1 class, which is one of the four categories competing in Bahrain. While LMP1 is for works (manufacturer-backed) teams, private teams go for LMP2, which don’t enjoy the support of manufacturers but still get a lot of assistance, for instance, varieties of chassis such as Ligier, Alpine, Dome and Morgan by Nissan. The most competitive is usually the LMGTE Pro class, designated on track

by green numbers. You will see frantic wheel-to-wheel racing in Ferrari 458s, fending off challenges from works teams of Porsche 911 RSRs and Aston Martin Vantage V8s. Quite often, these races go the distance, battling right up to the chequered flag. There is also an LMGTE Am category for similar cars a year older than their Pro cousins and including a gentleman driver on the team. Some names in this category may well be familiar, one in particular being Patrick Dempsey, the Hollywood actor best known for his McDreamy role on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. Dempsey

will be behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 RSR in his new vocation as a fulltime driver. One of the skills any racer competing in the 6 Hours of Bahrain race will need is the ability to cope with the change from daylight to darkness. It’s this condition — as well as the speed differentials between cars — that really challenges the drivers. The lighting system at the track was installed for the 2014 Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix. It features 495 light posts ranging from 10 to 45 metres in height as well as up to 5,000 luminaries to light up the 5.41-kilometre-long
circuit, helping to ease the transition from day to night. As the sun begins to set on this year’s FIA WEC, there is no doubt the series is going from strength to strength with McLaren’s F1 world champions Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button both showing interest. Porsche’s Webber, who switched from Formula 1 at the start of 2014, is certainly enjoying his new challenge. “The WEC is fine, and the fact that F1 drivers such as Nico [Hülkenberg] are looking at us just shows how prestigious it is becoming with the battle of these great manufacturers,” he says. n

The prestigious FIA World Endurance Championship may have begun in its present guise only in 2012, but its prized event is one of the world’s most famous motor races — the 24 Hours of Le Mans, first run in 1923. Around this Blue Riband race that takes place in June, the championship visits some of Europe’s most celebrated classic circuits such as Monza in Italy, Silverstone in England and Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps, before heading further afield to race in the US, Japan and China and gathering in the heat of Bahrain for the season finale. The variety of cars in the four classes is matched by the demanding nature of the circuits. There is no doubt that the champions crowned in November will be worthy winners.

The uplifting aroma of a Greek coffee traditionally served with loukoumi (Turkish delight), koulouri Thessalonikis (sesame bread rings) and small, salty bougatsa bites is the ultimate breakfast choice while in Thessaloniki and the best way to start a gastronomic tour of the Greek city. “Our culinary walks are entirely based on the culinary history of our city, on the influences it has received from the various tribes who settled in Thessaloniki and transformed it with their cooking customs the cuisine we savour today,” says Smaragda Ntasioudi-Makri, Founder of the Marmita cooking school, who launched the Eat & Walk foodie routes around Thessaloniki a few years ago. The city’s food scene reflects a multicultural society where each group contributes their own culture, traditions and, more importantly, cuisine and recipes. Sephardic Jews, expelled from Spain around the 15th century, introduced specialities such as melitzanobourekakia (a fried pastry filled with aubergines) and salad with Piaget beans, as well as the concept of adding nuts and dried fruit to food (like pine nuts, walnuts and raisins). Greeks from Istanbul brought the East’s fusion of flavours and recipes such as vegetables stuffed with rice, eggplant in a more refined form (chounkiar beyiendi) and soutzoukakia (meatballs in tomato sauce) along with those based on fish, mainly salted ones, such as lakerda, smoked eel and lykourinos, which you can easily find at the local market. Eat & Walk’s scrumptious itinerary includes small artisan food shops, traditional markets, retro sweet shops, modern delicatessens and lots of opportunities to sample local delicacies. If you crave more, you can return to the cosy space of the Marmita cooking school and learn hands-on how to prepare local dishes such as pitta stuffed with various ingredients, tzatziki and koulouri Thessalonikis. Kapani, a traditional food market bursting with colours, aromas and the loud voices of merchants, is one of the highlights. A bit chaotic and carefree, it illustrates vividly Thessaloniki’s everyday life. Amid its hustle and bustle, tucked away in a corner is Modigliani, a traditional kafenio (café) where you can savour quality drinks with simple but tasty mezes. To sample more local specialities, head to the ouzeri Loutros, which serves delicious seafood and mezes in an unpretentious environment. ?Where did the idea for Green Bar come from Drawing inspiration from the Middle Eastern tradition of using time-tested home remedies to address skin issues, I launched Green Bar in 2006. The brand uses healing botanical oils and native medicinal plants and was particularly conceived to help people connect with nature and draw them closer to fascinating herbs, flowers and trees that are capable of bringing positive changes in our life.

Have you always been interested in traditional ?methods of healing Being an advocate of a fresh, unprocessed, farm-to-table diet, my conscience never allowed me to slather just anything on my skin. I have an extreme distaste for synthetic and chemical ingredients as they don’t add any value to our lives. When I failed to get high-quality, non-chemical skincare products for myself, I started to make them at home using only plants and natural substances. However, it was not easy to source all the ingredients from suppliers and growers without a registered business. I had to formally launch a company to access all the ingredients that I wanted to use in my products.

?Where do you source those ingredients from I source jujube, hibiscus flowers and mulberry leaves from Bahrain, while frankincense and myrrh come from Oman and roses from Turkey and Morocco. I also obtain ingredients such as vanilla, coconuts, frangipani and jasmine from Hawaii, Australia and Japan.

In a world of multinational skincare brands, how ?do you find a market for your products My biggest challenge was learning to navigate tricky regulation issues with regard to the production of natural beauty products. I also had to focus only on Bahrain initially as it’s not easy for a small enterprise to expand rapidly in the Middle East. However, it was simply because of the quality of Green Bar products that I have been able to survive the challenges. I truly care about how a product is made and what goes into it. I spend a lot of time reading about the ingredients and checking their sources of origin. Furthermore, I test all the products on myself before launching them in the market. ?What’s your best beauty tip Take a holiday and rest. It will give your skin a glow you can’t get any other way. n

“We have a collection of artworks by three leading Bahraini artists and two international artists who reside in Bahrain. We will be showcasing original oil paintings by German-Lebanese painter Amal Deyhle, and original mixed-media paintings and calligraphy by Bahraini artists Abbas Al Mosawi and Abbas Yousif. “We will also exhibit our in-house fine art reproductions and showcase fine art photography by German Manfred Erber and South African L. Marshall. The photos depict Bahrain’s historical and traditional treasures. In addition, there will be sculptures by Bahraini artist Khalid Farhan in stainless steel and bronze.” www.artdivano.com
“Bahrain has a refined level of appreciation and talent for art, which makes it a great location for an international art fair,” says Kaneka Subberwal, Co-founder of ArtBahrain. The idea of the first fair, set to take place in a purpose-built 50-metre-wide pavilion, is to attract an ambitious 10,000 visitors, including some 2,000 international collectors. Created in collaboration with Art Select, a leading British consultancy that specialises in South Asian and Middle Eastern art, ArtBahrain’s main aim is to encourage visitors to invest in accessible art. Working under the slogan Create, Connect and Inspire, the event highlight will be works by Iranian-Indian painter Sacha Jafri. The youngest Muslim to be
offered a 10-year retrospective by some of the leading museums in the world at the age of just 27 — a feat that Picasso didn’t achieve until the age of 34 — Jafri has donated more than $14 million to charity. Typically, the artist’s works sell for $250,000-$750,000. Jafri, who studied at the UK’s prestigious Eton College, has a number of celebrity fans including David Beckham, George Clooney and Madonna. Described by the Financial Times as “a shrewd investment,” 48 of Jafri’s creations will appear as part of his new 18-year retrospective. With galleries from across the globe participating in the event, ArtBahrain intends to present a truly international collection of Middle Eastern art.

Date: October 15 Venue: Cultural Hall A combination of melodies born in Lebanon or on the banks of the Seine in Paris, this international performance of Dorsaf Hamdani’s Barbara and Fairuz will see Western and Eastern sensitivities unite. Hamdani, from Tunisia, is recognised as one of the country’s finest singers, with her Arab and Andalusian influences playing a key role in her performances. She will be joined by French jazz accordionist Daniel Mille, who has worked with everyone from French opera singer Claude Nougaro to pop singer Jacques Higelin and will be the musical director of the show.
NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF TUNIS Date: October 10 Venue: Cultural Hall The North African classical ensemble will be performing Arabic music in the wasla tradition, where the songs are arranged as set pieces, which comprise of eight or more movements.

أﻛرث ﻣﻦ ﻧﺼﻒ ﻃﺎﺋﺮات أﺳﻄﻮل ﴍﻛﺎت اﻟﻄريان اﻷﻋﻀﺎء ﻻ ﻳﺘﺠﺎوز ﻋﻤﺮﻫﺎ اﻟـ 5ﺳﻨﻮات؛ وﻣﻊ وﺿﻊ ﻃﺎﺋﺮات ﺣﺪﻳﺜﺔ وﻣﺘﻄﻮرة ﰲ اﻷﺳﻄﻮل، ﻳﺼﻞ ﻣﺘﻮﺳﻂ ﻋﻤﺮ اﻷﺳﻄﻮل ﻟﺪى أﻋﻀﺎء اﻹﺗﺤﺎد اﻟﻌﺮيب ﻟﻠﻨﻘﻞ اﻟﺠﻮي إﱃ 7.2ﻋﺎﻣﺎً ،أي أﺻﻐﺮ ﺳﻨﺎً ﻣﻦ ﻣﻌﻈﻢ أﺳﺎﻃﻴﻞ ﻣﻨﺎﻃﻖ اﻟﻌﺎمل اﻷﺧﺮى.

ذاق مرارة اليتم صغيراً حين توفي والده وهو في الثالثة من عمره .وعاش رحلة
Upon losing his father at age three, Mohammed went with his widowed mother and two siblings to a shelter called Ribat Abu-Zinadah; a Yemenite hostel for orphaned families. With the financial help of the soon-to-be crown prince Faisal, her children were accepted into one of the orphan schools. Abdu began singing and performing while still studying to be an engineer in the early 1960s. In 1963, he graduated from the Institute of industrial Jeddah. He was selected for a post in Italy in the shipbuilding industry, but as fate would have it, he was convinced by Abbas Ghazawi to give his music career a shot. He never made it to Rome, instead he flew to Beirut, and began collaborating with artists and launched his music career.

Abdu's music was based on the older generation's ageless talents and songs of maybe a thousand years of heritage, but nevertheless, he was credited with preserving these songs called mawrouth (the inherited songs) without much change in their build-up or musical arrangements. His Chaabyat albums, released through his label Voice of Al-Jazeerah in the 1990s, were his attempt at documenting that old tradition. These jalsat (sittings) were when his talent crystallised: his oud was the instrument he talked to almost spiritually, in a manner never seen before in any Arab singer other than Farid al-Atrash, Baligh Hamdi and Talal Maddah. In admiration, Abdu sang one of Baligh's compositions Sert Al-Houb (Love Story) for Umm Kulthum on her 69th birthday.
من الفقر والعوز حتى أنه أقام فترة مع والدته وشقيقه في نزل يمني ألسر األيتام يدعى رباط أبو زنده .ودخل محمد عبده مدرسة لأليتام مع أخيه بفضل منحة مالية قدمها الملك الراحل فيصل (كان حينها ولياً للعهد) .وفي بداية ستينيات القرن الماضي بدأ محمد عبده مسيرته الفنية مع عالم الغناء وهو طالب في المعهد الصناعي بجدة ،الذي تخرج منه عام .1963في ذلك الحين توجه محمد عبه مع بعثة سعودية إلى إيطاليا ليختص في صناعة السفن .ولكن رحلته تحولت من روما إلى بيروت ،في نقلة نوعية من بناء السفن إلى بناء المجد الفني ،وكان ذلك عن طريق عباس فائق غزاوي الذي كان من ضمن مكتشفي صوت محمد عبده عندما غنى في اإلذاعة في برنامج "بابا عباس" عام 1960م، وبارك هذا االكتشاف الشاعر المعروف طاهر زمخشري.
تعرف على الملحن السوري محمد محسن الذي أخذ من الزمخشري كلمات "خاصمت عيني من سنين" ليغني أغنية خاصة به بعد أن اعتاد على أداء أغاني من سبقوه ومنها أغنية "قالوها في الحارة ..الدنيا غدارة"ُ ،سجلت األغنية وعاد
فنان العرب ألرض الوطن ليدخل عالم الغناء بقوة وتعرف على العديد من الشعراء أمثال إبراهيم خفاجي الذي كان له تأثيراً واضحاً على حياته الفنية ،والموسيقار طارق عبد الحكيم الذي قدم له لحناً رائعاً من كلمات الشاعر المعروف ناصر بن جريد بعنوان "سكة التايهين" التي قدمها محمد عبده عام .1966ووجد محمد
عبده نفسه في حاجة إلى القيام بالتلحين لنفسه ،رغم ألحان طارق عبد الحكيم
وعمر كدرس التي صقلت موهبته لكنه خاض التجربة وكانت أغنية "خالص ضاعت أمانينا ..مدام الحلو ناسينا" التي قدمها على العود واإليقاع دون أي توزيع موسيقي ،وكان نجاح هذا اللحن تشجيعاً له على خوض التلحين الذاتي أكثر وأكثر.
