Meet the Staff Cathy Turner Cathy Turner is the Director of Health Promotion & Senior Health at Virginia Hospital Center where she has worked for more than 20 years. Cathy took over the Lifeline program in 1999 and since then has installed hundreds of subscribers. “Over the years I have seen how Philips Lifeline has helped so many of our subscribers and, in many cases, saved their lives. I installed my mother-in-law’s Lifeline in 2001 and it has provided great peace of mind to our family,” she said. Cathy currently serves on the Advisory Board for Philips Lifeline corporate, instructs Hospital wellness programs, and presents health education to community and corporate groups.

Mary Belanich Mary Belanich joined the Virginia Hospital Center staff as Manager of Senior Health in 2005. In addition to managing the Philips Lifeline and Senior Health programs, Mary provides educational presentations and support to a variety of community groups. Mary has worked in the healthcare field for 23 years with an emphasis on issues concerning the elderly. When asked what she likes best about her job, Mary said “being in a position to promote healthy aging with options for maintaining independence and safety with the use of Philips Lifeline.”

Jessy Mack Jessy Mack has been the Manager of Corporate Health at Virginia Hospital Center since 2008. She teaches a variety of health education lectures and coordinates all of our corporate health fairs. Jessy is a senior fitness instructor and also assists with Lifeline service calls.

Catherine Lopez Catherine Lopez is the newest member of the Senior Health Department, joining the team in 2014. She is a recent graduate of James Madison University and now serves as the Administrative Coordinator. Catherine coordinates all of the billing for the Lifeline program and is the friendly voice answering the phone in the office.

Ray Husson Ray Husson, a member of the Virginia Hospital Center Auxiliary, retired after a long career in occupational safety and health/ safety management. When Ray is not volunteering at the Hospital as a wheelchair escort, he assists the Senior Health Department with various Lifeline service calls.

Lena Wang Lena Wang has been with Virginia Hospital Center since 2005 and with the Senior Health Department as Assistant Manager since 2008. Lena assists in coordinating the Senior Health programs, presents health education lectures, and performs health screenings at events. Lena is in her second term with Arlington County’s Commission on Aging and is an active member on four of the Commission’s sub-committees for older adults. Lena has been an advocate for practicing preventive medicine and provides many senior wellness lectures throughout the year.

Cornelia Lesh Cornelia Lesh has been the Manager of Community Health since 2005. She oversees Virginia Hospital Center’s fitness and healthy lifestyle programs, including senior fitness classes. Cornelia also organizes health workshops for Hospital employees and enjoys opportunities to help with Lifeline installations and service calls.

Lifeline with Auto Alert provides an added layer of protection by automatically placing a call for help if a fall is detected and you can’t push your button. Virginia Hospital Center Foundation Lifeline Assistance Fund Virginia Hospital Center established the Lifeline Assistance Fund in 2009 to provide a subsidy for the Lifeline service, enabling seniors to remain in their homes with confidence and safety. Since its inception, more than 60 subscribers have benefited from this program. Our goal is to continuously enroll low-income individuals into the Lifeline Assistance Fund each year, and to support each subscriber for as long as he or she is able to use the Lifeline service. Referrals are received from Hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, county social services providers and home health agencies.

Jackie Igoe, Human Services Clinician with Arlington County’s Division of Aging and Disability Services, who has referred dozens of her own clients, says that because the Virginia Hospital Center Senior Health staff visit her clients in their homes, they are more likely to trust them and to properly use their Lifeline. According to her, the Hospital’s Lifeline Assistance Fund has greatly improved the quality of her low-income clients’ lives. As a not-for-profit Hospital, we rely on individual and corporate support of this program. With your help, this fund will assist our most vulnerable, at-risk community members by providing the Philips Lifeline service to those who otherwise would not be able to afford it.

Senior Exercise & Wellness Virginia Hospital Center’s community wellness program offers a diverse menu of fitness & healthy lifestyle classes and assessments. The programs share a common goal: to improve and maintain the health of the community.

Ballston Common Mall-Walking

Virginia Hospital Center and Ballston Common Mall have partnered to host Common Walk for over 25 years, a free program that is open to the community. Walkers arrive at the mall Tuesday and Thursday morning and complete “laps” along the top three levels of the mall. A cool down and stretch is led by Senior Health Department staff at the end of the session.

Regular exercise is associated with many health benefits, including successful managment of chronic medical conditions. Virginia Hospital Center provides a diverse selection of exercise classes that are sure to meet everyone’s needs.

Special Programs Healthy Aging Lecture Series: Knowing current healthcare trends and options for services in the area can help individuals age in their homes safely. This lecture series is a free, monthly program where specialists and professionals are invited to present the latest information on a variety of aging issues. Memory Screening: The Senior Health Department sponsors free, confidential memory screenings to promote proper detection of memory problems and provide education about successful aging. The one-on-one, noninvasive screening takes only five to ten minutes and is administered by a qualified healthcare professional. Call 703.558.6859 for the next available screening date.

Fall-Risk Assessments: A comprehensive exam measures one’s risk for falling via a medication review, blood pressure check, vision screening and six physical therapy tests to assess balance. A physical therapist will review results and provide a personal evaluation and recommendations on how to reduce risks, as well as offer education for successful independent living. Total Joint Replacement Class: Being prepared is the first step toward a successful surgical outcome, so be sure to attend our in-depth Total Joint Replacement Class. Diabetes Education: The Virginia Hospital Center Diabetes Education Program is an American Diabetes Association Recognized Program. Advance Medical Directives Virginia Hospital Center Supports Patient Rights Planning ahead for medical decisions can make difficult situations more manageable for patients and their families.

Advance planning is the only way to ensure that a patient’s wishes are followed in the event of a medical emergency or long-term illness.

Under a Virginia law called the Healthcare Decisions Act, adults may sign a document that makes their choices about treatment known to their doctor and family in advance. In that document, they also can name someone to make decisions for them if they become unable to do so themselves.

This document is known as an advance directive.

Tips to Prepare for a Visit to Virginia Hospital Center A well-planned visit to the Hospital helps you focus your energy and attention on your healthcare needs and questions. Whether the visit is for an appointment or an emergency, there are a few ways to keep it from being chaotic. By preparing a few simple things, you will be able to focus on the role you play in your own healthcare or the healthcare of a family member or friend.

Preparing for an Appointment or a Visit to the Hospital: Prepare what you can before you arrive.

• Always carry your photo ID and insurance card(s).

• I f the visit is to see a physician, plan ahead of time and see what paperwork needs to be completed for the appointment.

• I f you are visiting a family member staying in the Hospital, know the visiting hours, where to park and if you need any legal documents should you have medical power of attorney.

• I f the visit entails an outpatient service (i.e. radiology, laboratory or therapy visit), make sure you have your physician’s order with you.

Glossary of Terms Adult Day Center: Also called Adult Day Services, Adult Day Care or Adult Day Health Centers, these facilities and programs provide regular daytime care to senior adults for socialization; recreation; help with personal care; safety; and in some cases, health and rehabilitation-related services.

Area Agency on Aging: The local or regional agency established under the Federal Older Americans Act to coordinate and provide a wide variety of services to the elderly.

Assisted Living: Residences that offer private, homelike living space (for example, an apartment, private room or cottage) with services to support activities of daily living. Some assisted living residences also offer health care services. Most residences include housekeeping, meals and activity programs.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs): Retirement communities that include various levels of care - from residential independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing care. Most CCRCs offer residency agreements, which include future health services and access to different levels of care.

Dementia: Disorders of the brain, including Alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses, that result in a decline in the memory and other intellectual functions.

Discharge Planning: A service provided through Hospitals and other health care providers to help place a convalescing patient in an appropriate care setting, or to arrange appropriate services at home.

Durable Power of Attorney: A legal document executed as part of a person’s estate planning. In it, the person names an “attorney-infact” or “agent” to act on his or her behalf in business and/or health care matters.

Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care: Also called a “Health Care Appointment” or a “Health Care Proxy.” This is a legal document that lets you give someone else the power to make health care decisions for you if a time comes that you can’t speak for yourself.

Health Care Directive: Also called a “Living Will.” This is a document that lets you say what kinds of care you would want and not want if you were nearing the end of your life. Usually deals with life-sustaining measures.

Home Health Care: Health care services provided in the home. Includes care and support provided by home health aides, certified nursing assistants, registered and licensed nurses, rehabilitation therapists, and social workers. Personal care assistants may also provide assistance with certain activities.

Hospice Care: Care for the terminally ill and their families, emphasizing pain management and controlling symptoms, rather than seeking a cure. Offered by hospitals, long-term care facilities and hospice organizations on an inpatient basis or at home.

Independent Living: Also called “residential independent living” or “congregate care.” Retirement communities offer independent senior living in a variety of settings such as apartments, cottages, duplex homes and patio homes. Residents must be able to live safely in the independent environment. Typical services offered by the retirement community include housekeeping, transportation, activities and dining.

Meals On Wheels: Community-based meal service that delivers meals to the homes of senior adults at a modest charge.

Medicaid: A joint state/federal program which helps pay the medical expenses of low-income individuals who meet the program’s qualifying standards.

Medicare: The federal program that provides health insurance for people age 65 and over, for people with permanent kidney failure, and those with certain disabilities.

Ombudsman: The ombudsman program provides advocacy and trouble-shooting support for long-term care and assisted living residents. Open access to the ombudsman is a protected resident right.

Power of Attorney: A legal document that gives another person legal authority to act on one’s behalf.

Respite Care: Temporary care for a person, provided by a home health care agency or other provider, in order to give the person’s regular caregiver rest and personal time. Respite care can be in the home, at an adult day center, or in a long-term care facility or hospital.

Skilled Nursing Facility: Also called “nursing homes,” these facilities play two important roles: they provide rehabilitation or “subacute care” for people who have been discharged from the hospital but are not medically or physically able to return home; and they provide extended long-term care to frail or chronically ill persons who require a higher level of skilled nursing and medical supervision than is available in other settings.

Retirement Living Communities Continuing Care Communities offer support for changing health needs

C

ontinuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) offer long-term contracts that guarantee lifelong shelter and access to specified health care services. A staff of medical professionals is on hand to provide different levels of care, from independent living to assisted living and nursing care. A member can move up or down this continuum of care for the rest of their life.

Most CCRCs establish requirements for incoming residents based on age, financial assets, income level and physical health. Residents are typically expected to move in while they are still independent to get to know the community. In return for guaranteed lifelong shelter, amenities and health care, residents usually pay a lump-sum entrance fee and regular

monthly payments. There are three basic types of CCRC contracts.

An extensive contract covers shelter, residential services, and amenities, plus unlimited long-term nursing care without an increase in monthly payments (except for increases related to operating costs and inflation adjustments). An extensive contract spreads the risk of catastrophic health care costs among all residents, so that no single person faces financial ruin. Entrance fees and monthly costs under this contract are typically higher than those under modified or fee-forservice contracts.

A modified continuing care contract covers shelter, residential services and amenities, plus a specified amount of nursing care. After the specified amount has been received, the resident can receive care at daily or monthly nursing

care rates.

A fee-for-service continuing care contract covers shelter, residential services and amenities. While emergency and short-term nursing care is usually included in the contract, access to longterm nursing care is guaranteed only at daily rates. Entrance and monthly fees are lower because residents are responsible for all long-term nursing and health care costs. Most CCRCs provide a variety of residential services that may be covered by monthly fees or be available at extra cost, depending on the contract.

Visit the CCRCs you are considering with a trusted family member. Immerse yourself as much as possible in the daily life, and assess the management’s philosophy and its relationship with residents.

he more years you put behind you, the more worries you may have about continuing to maintain your home. When you do not need medical supervision, but feel like washing your hands of endless home-related tasks, independent living is an option that can help.

What is Independent Living?

Independent living communities are residential communities for active older adults who want an enjoyable lifestyle free of the worries and trouble of home maintenance. They are similar to any apartment, condominium or single-family development, except that

they provide special services, including security—an important consideration for many residents.

Most independent living communities are fully secured, with staff members greeting and screening all visitors around the clock. Residents can leave home for extended periods of time knowing that their living quarters will be safe.

As many individuals at this stage in their lives are looking to pursue new hobbies and interests with their free time, the activities and amenities available at a community are a major factor for potential residents. Several independent living communities provide a full range of activities such as shopping trips, outings to cultural events and organized

gatherings that promote socialization.

Some communities also have tennis courts, swimming pools, activity rooms and other amenities that keep residents active and engaged. Most offer a variety of meal plans, including the option to prepare meals in your own apartment.

Most independent living communities do not offer health care services (such as those provided, for example, by assisted living communities and skilled nursing/rehabilitation facilities), but some independent living communities are affiliated with health care facilities that can provide such care when it is needed. Residents also have the option of purchasing home health care services from outside providers to whom they may have grown accustomed.

Providing supportive services

ssisted Living communities offer housing and a variety of supportive services delivered by qualified staff members. As opposed to independent living communities, health care services are available at assisted living communities. The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) notes that assisted living is “a unique transition from independent living without care” that “helps seniors enjoy an improved quality of life with independence and care combined.”

Community amenities vary widely but can include private units, state-of-theart facilities, beautifully decorated common areas, barber shops and beauty parlors, pharmacies, physical therapy services, recreation rooms, libraries, gardening areas, and fitness centers.

Consumers will quickly find that as-

sisted living communities, also commonly called residential care facilities or personal care homes, come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Who Needs It? Residents of assisted living usually include anyone who needs some help with the activities of daily life. These include eating, bathing, dressing, transferring, toileting, medication management and walking.

Most communities offer three meals a day served in a common dining area.

Many also offer some type of assistance with transportation. Housekeeping and laundry services are standard offerings.

Staff members are available to meet resident needs 24 hours a day. Most communities are equipped with security systems, and emergency call systems are often available in all residences. For residents with more acute health care

needs, such as Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, special units and/or specially trained staff members are often available. In addition, communities offer a wide range of social activities to stimulate resident contact.

Choosing a Community First and foremost, consider the needs and desires of the potential resident. Narrow the search by reviewing a list of all the local communities.

Request a brochure from your top choices, as well as other specific information such as the resident agreement or contract, a list of services and amenities, detailed prices, staffing information, admission and discharge criteria, and community rules.

Visit a facility more than once to get a complete feel of the lifestyle at the community. Talk with staff and residents and tour the entire facility.

An advancing industry, home healthcare is essentially skilled nursing care and certain other forms of healthcare that you get in your home for the treatment of an illness or injury. It is an important option to consider regardless of one’s age or health conditions.

Options in Home Care An incredibly diverse field, home care includes companion care, home healthcare, skilled nursing or hospice care.

COMPANION CARE is provided by caregivers or companions, who serve as surrogate family members, performing

many of the tasks that family members would typically complete. Assistance from companion caregivers can include meal preparation, medication reminders, laundry, light housekeeping, shopping, transportation and assistance with exercising. The overall goals of companion care providers are to ensure that the home environment remains safe and that the individual has a companion to spend time with when family is not available.

HOME HEALTHCARE is for those who are no longer able to perform all of the functions of daily living by themselves but who do not require skilled medical services. A home health aide can help with activities of daily living (ADLs), which include bathing, dressing, transferring, eating and toileting. Additional services generally include meal preparation, mobility exercises, housekeep-

ing, laundry, medication reminders and transportation.

SKILLED NURSING CARE is prescribed by a physician and is administered by a registered nurse. The services provided by skilled nurses include: administering injections, administering medications, wound care, IV monitoring, blood tests, catheter care, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, feeding tube administration and more.
