This year ’ s race start was greeted by rain and a South wind funneling up the bay, creating whitecaps and tough conditions for many of the paddlers, especially those who chose to do the race on a stand up paddleboard While most visitors stay at the campground and beach area, racers got an up close view of the island through the extraordinary trail network Our Director of Parks and Recreation, John Chase, joined the fun to experience the whole island with nearly 100 other registered racers and earned a 4th place finish in the kayak/surfski under 18’ class.

Earlier this week Kelsey Fordyce from Health Department, Community Health Division, was conducting a community visit with her client at the Kingsley park when she noticed a young woman sitting on the ground with two young children her intuition told her something was not quite right so she went over to assess the situation. This is when she noticed the woman was becoming unresponsive she immediately called 911 and waited for EMS to arrive. Kelsey then stayed with the children until the children's parents arrived on the scene It turned out that the young woman babysitting the children had an anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting Thank you to Kelsey for staying calm and quickly thinking on your feet, you are a HERO!

DK5K Race Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office showed support for a great event this past weekend. Come rain or shine they were there to show support for this cause and our Veterans. The DK5K was put together to not only honor and remember Drew Kostic, but to take up his torch to continue raising awareness about veteran suicide On average, 22 veterans take their own lives every day that adds up to over 8,000 per year By raising awareness we can better the lives of our veterans and reduce the stressors that can sometimes be too much to bear. This was a 5K obstacle style tough run! Everyone from 5 to 65 years old can come to challenge themselves. Pictured is Officer Roy Raska and his family participating in the DK5K
