The Grand Traverse County / City of Traverse City Facilities Master Plan (FMP) project kicked in March with an introductory presentation to department managers Teams including Joe Berry, Chris Forsyth and our experts at TowerPinkster then began conducting facility assessment walk-throughs to gather baseline assessments of what currently exists.
What's Happening Now?
Facility assessment walk-throughs will continue on April 21st and conclude on April 24th. There is no need for you to be present during these walk-throughs, however it would be helpful to have all office spaces as accessible as possible. There may also be reviews of some exteriors/building sites on the 17th.
What's up next?
We will be scheduling conversations with department groups April 25 – 28th to gather more information
What to know:
A schedule will be sent to managers ASAP to meet among similar departments and discuss with our consultants how our current uses of places & spaces are serving our needs. This is a chance to help inform the planning process and identify what’s working well and what opportunities for improvements there might be.

While there are many veterans and their families in Northern Michigan, some may not know there is an office where they can work with an advocate to obtain all their VA benefits.
The Grand Traverse County Department of Veterans Affairs is a local office funded by millage dollars to assist clients for no cost - ever! The office is a clearinghouse for Grand Traverse Veterans and social services within the region. Our staff is happy to assist you with any agency that offers services to veterans in our area specific to your situation
With the passing of the PACT ACT, veterans have been overwhelmed by radio and TV advertisements and social media marketing from attorneys or private for-profit organizations that want to help veterans file claims, for instance with the Camp Lejeune water contamination lawsuits Often those agencies take 30% or higher in money owed to you from the VA. Some even require large payments upfront just to review your documents. Alternatively, you can file for benefits through our office at no extra cost to you Our staff is accredited with the VA’s Office of General Counsel to represent clients in filing claims or appeals
If there is ever a doubt about where to get help or about a specific organization, please stop by or contact our
National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week is Sunday, April 9th through Saturday April 15th
This week is set aside each year to honor the men and women of 911 who serve our community by answering emergency calls, dispatching Law, Fire, and EMS, and rendering life-saving assistance to those in need
Your Grand Traverse County Emergency Telecommunicators effectively meet their mission as First Responders every day, and they do so with skill, professionalism, and compassion
They regularly sacrifice time with family on holiday, weekends, special family events, and much more Most recently, we have been working through a staffing shortage, which has increased the demand for working extra hours to ensure no call goes unanswered As the 911 Director, I could not be more proud of our team Through all of the tribulations, our Emergency Telecommunicators remain resilient, and determined to never let the mission fail. They consistently answer the public's call for help when they need it most Thank you all for the job you do to protect the citizens and visitors of Grand Traverse County!

Did you know only 12 percent of American adults are metabolically healthy? Are you one of them?
Having good metabolic health is more than just being a healthy weight. Abnormalities in your blood sugar, waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides also can show how metabolically healthy you are now and how likely you are to develop serious conditions later. When at least 3 of these markers are out of range, a person is considered to have Metabolic Syndrome which shows that you are at risk for developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke. Approximately 1 in 3 adults in the United States have Metabolic Syndrome
One random high level may not indicate that you are in immediate danger but over time these levels can contribute to chronic inflammation, plaque buildup, issues with glucose processing, cancer development, chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, acne, brain fog and weight gain which are all symptoms of a metabolic problem. Even if all these biometrics are within range, there still may be room for improvement to further reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and liver disease. Even if we have a genetic predisposition toward a certain health problem, this does mean we are predestined to that fate It does indicate what we need to put some extra effort into, especially before issues develop Here are some steps we can make to start revving up our metabolic health:
Focus on getting 7-8 hours of good quality sleep every night
Eat in a balanced way.
Drink plenty of water every day For most people this means 8-12 cups of water
Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake to 2 or less for men and 1 or less for women per day. Get some physical activity daily Focus on building muscle and getting your heart rate up
Learn to manage stress well.
