GSTAAD'S TREASURES

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our retreat in the majestic Swiss mountains, where nature is not just a backdrop but the primary experience.

Sometimes, people ask me what I like best about summer in Gstaad. The simple answer: Sleeping with the windows open. Here, far away from the hustle and bustle of a city, the summer is warm rather than hot – and our cool mountain nights offer the perfect opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, enveloped in the silence of the mountains.

Another summer highlight of mine is swimming in one of the crystal-clear mountain lakes surrounding us. There is nothing more refreshing than a dip in the cool water after a long hike.

In Gstaad, you will find real beauty in the things closest to you. Far-away beaches have their own magic, that’s true. Yet, the nature surrounding our hotel offers a deep and enriching way to relax – and to simply be. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

7

Join us at the finish line on 31st August at 5.30 pm for a cocktail with the participants. Good weather only. For more information, please visit palace.ch

With the big panoramic windows in all travel classes, travelers can get a full immersion in the landscape. GSTAAD - SAANENLAND, A TRUE PARADISE

SUMMER 2024

An unbeatable summer in the mountains

FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER IN THE MOUNTAINS: GSTAAD.CH/FONDUELAND

In summer, the holiday region Gstaad takes on a different vibe, with hiking and biking galore in the mountains. There’s an incredible array of things to do: enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and mountain activities during the day, followed by an intimate dinner and perhaps an exquisite concert at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy to round things off. Gstaad forms the perfect backdrop for unforgettable summer days and nights. And where does the precious gold of the Alps secretly mature? It’s hidden well beneath the earth, amidst cooling rock walls, at a temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. The Gstaad cheese grotto is an aging cheese cellar for more than 3000 wheels of cheese, located in the former municipal water reservoir.

Descend steep wooden stairs 25 metres deep to discover fascinating insights about Bernese Hobelkäse AOP and its origins. Those who wish to reserve a knowledgeable tour with an apéritif can do so year-round at the “Molkerei Gstaad”. You can sample and purchase Bernese Hobelkäse AOP and many other regional products at the local dairies.

For intrepid types

DIGITAL DETOXING IN UNTOUCHED ABLÄNDSCHEN

Travel to the ends of the earth and beyond. The popular e-postbus route to the idyllic mountain village of Abländschen is just about to start running again for a second season. It will serve this magnificent spot from the beginning of May to the end of October. The route takes you from Saanen over the Mittelberg Pass to Abländschen and on to Jaun mountain railway station. In Abländschen, we recommend stopping at the “Berghotel zur Sau” for a delicious lunch. Tip: you can also arrange a guide for a bike tour, but booking of the guide and postbus is required.

22

For leisurely riders

AN E-BIKE EXCURSION TO THE TURBACH VALLEY

Ascending 400 m in altitude over 15 km is no trouble at all on an e-bike. Leisurely riders and families can start off in Gstaad. The route takes you through the scenic Turbach valley and back via Bissen, with Gstaad at your feet. Don’t forget to make a long pit stop at the “Wintermatte-Beizli” or the “Sunne-Stübli” restaurant at the halfway point in Turbach.

For a “mooh” experience

THE NEW ALPINE MAGIC THEMED TRAIL

The name says it all: the new Alpenzauber-themed trail on the Rinderberg above Zweisimmen shows hikers that milk here doesn’t come from a carton, but from one of the 11,000 cows in the Gstaad region. From the Rinderberg, the trail leads on to the Horneggli, providing insights into all facets of alpine farming. It’s an eye-opening experience for visitors of all ages.

For an insight into local traditions

A JAUNT TO MOUNTAIN PASTURES

When early summer arrives in the valley, the cows head up to graze on the 80 Alpine pastures around Gstaad. Why not stop by a farmstead and take in the Alpine air? The rustic Alpine huts on the hiking trails are great for stopping off for a leisurely break with fresh milk, butter, a piece of sliced cheese and sausage. For the full experience, be there for the traditional cheese making every morning over an open fire. The big finale in late August are the “Züglete” cattle drives, when the cows march down from the mountain into the valley. This is the focus of festivities in Gstaad on 31 August.

YES, I DO!

Aray of sunlight peeked through the curtains and fell on my face. Birds had gathered for the morning concert and performed their latest hit. This was my wakeup call!

Who would have thought that this holiday would be one of a kind? My boyfriend and I spent the morning with a good nourishing breakfast on La Grande Terrasse. For the rest of the day, we had planned an extensive hiking excursion starting at the Arnensee. Before we went on our hike, we took some time to refresh in the cool mountain lake taking a few dips. Hungry? Oh yes! We enjoyed a good meal on the terrace at the “Huus am Arnensee” watching the mountain range and the intense blue water whilst cow bells sounded in the distance.

TIME TO HIKE

Arnensee – Walig Hut: 2 – 2.5 hrs

THE VIEW

Mountain views – cool forests – cows – sunshine – silence (well, almost besides all the animal and natural sounds)

TIP

You need to experience this yourself to really understand the magic of it!

Already before we arrived at the Walig Hut by the Gstaad Palace the sound of the Alps, respectively alphorns could be heard. At the hut itself the alphorn players showcased their skills to play this rare instrument to perfection. Still amazed by this spectacle, a woman in a traditional dress came out of the hut and….

TIPS AND TRICKS WHEN THINKING ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DESIGN

• Decide on the wedding date, secure venue, band, florist and photographer at first; design and the rest of the planning can follow afterwards.

• Pick your Venue well! It is a major factor for your aesthetics....

• Construct a List of Wedding Priorities -discuss what the 3 most important aspects of your wedding day are, be ready to make some compromises on the rest. This will help to focus on what really counts and remain within your budget.

• Start with the general theme or colour palette.

• Choose at least one WoW factor; this could be a floral installation...the possibilities are endless!

• Free yourself of the planning hustle and book a fullservice wedding agency to take care of all planning and design aspects of your wedding. This will also offer you the benefit to access to the planner’s extensive networks of top industry vendors.

«PISCINE»

«PISCINE» was a joint project of the Gstaad hoteliers. The Palace provided the land and the hoteliers’ association took over the construction and operation of the new swimming pool. The realisation period was very short.

Director Michel was able to inform the General Assembly that the 50-metre pool would open on 23 July 1928 - although construction work had not yet been completed. Even the most blasé visitor cannot help but feel a sense of admiration at the sight of this skilful work of art, which was created as if by magic in such a short time.

The creator of the plans has succeeded in creating an ideal complex that is unparalleled in terms of location and design through ingenious use of the terrain and grandiose lines, the “Anzeiger von Saanen” proudly noted on the 25 July 1928. Behind the scenes, people were less proud of the construction bill. Due to an error in the engineer’s calculations and subsequent changes to the project, the «PISCINE» costed almost twice as much as planned.

However, thanks to the excellent business results in the second half of the 1920s, the hoteliers were able to get over the additional costs.

“WE HAVE A SPECIAL PASSION AND LOVE FOR OUR BUSINESS.”

Chopard, Laurent-Perrier, and the Gstaad Palace: all three of them are epitomes of luxury –and they all are family-owned.

Andrea Scherz, General Manager of the Gstaad Palace, talks with Karl Friedrich Scheufele, Co-president of Chopard, and Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt, third-generation family owner from Laurent-Perrier about the joys and challenges of running a family-owned business.

What secret ingredients distinguish family-owned companies like yours?

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: A family-owned, multi-generational company like ours is built on long-term strategy rather than short-term profit. But the real “secret” ingredient is the family atmosphere which business partners and staff members feel throughout the organisation.

Andrea Scherz: I completely agree. Above all, we have a long-term perspective on growth and sustainability. For three generations now, we have cultivated a strong attachment to our Palace. Being family-owned, we have a special passion and love for our business.

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: My sister and I are deeply convinced that innovation

and “savoir-faire” are the real keys to success. Laurent-Perrier has been pursuing innovation in the winemaking process at all stages ever since my father took up the reins of Laurent-Perrier right after WWII. It’s an ongoing challenge as much as a mindset.

As family entrepreneurs, how do you define luxury?

Andrea Scherz: My personal luxury is to spend quality time in a true meaningful way! Often, we strive to do as many things as possible in a short period of time instead of enjoying the very moment.

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: I define luxury as a constant focus on quality and attention to detail. As a family-owned company in the Champagne business, my sister, the cellar master, and I make careful decisions to obtain great champagne wines.

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: In today’s fastmoving world, luxury is about lasting quality, uniqueness, excellent craftsmanship, as well as impeccable service, sustainability, and positive emotions.

For me personally, taking time for a family ski tour, for example, is a luxury.

48

Andrea

Can a family-owned company in the luxury space be sustainable?

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: Soil, water, and air are natural elements we respect and protect, as they are essential to growing wine. Moving towards sustainable viticulture is a collective approach for the entire appellation. Several years ago, we obtained the most demanding third level of the High Environmental Value HVE label.

Andrea Scherz: Family businesses tend to be leaders in sustainability. For generations, we have operated our hotel with sustainability in mind. Until today, we try to lead by example.

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: My sister and I have decided to act in favour of our planet out of personal conviction. In 2010, our company started a new sustainability journey. In 2012, we became members of the “Responsible Jewellery Council”; since 2018, we have only used ethical gold.

What challenges does your company face today?

Andrea Scherz: Climate change affects the snow conditions, that worries us. On the other hand, it is getting more difficult to find dedicated and quality-focused employees.

49

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: Our challenges are linked around three pillars: quality of wines, quality of people, and brand reputation. Innovation affects the quality of wines, but we also need the best people in order to achieve that. This and a unique style ensure our recognition for high-quality Champagne wines.

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: Our challenge is to perpetuate the over 40 crafts needed to create a watch or a piece of jewellery. We built an inhouse training facility and currently educate many apprentices in these crafts. Another big focus is to ensure our independence as a familyowned enterprise.

What personal touch do you incorporate into your company?

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: I try to transfer my unlimited passion for the art of watchmaking to our team members and to combine innovation with respect for traditional craftsmanship.

Andrea Scherz: I adapt my leadership style to today’s needs of my employees. We cultivate a participative management style, and we strive to give employees much more than just a job.

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: We want every visitor to Laurent-Perrier, wine professionals or connoisseurs, to feel this privilege and to immerse themselves in a specific knowhow.

How will AI influence your decision-making and your business?

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: Indeed, AI has the potential to bring in new expertise.

But we must not forget the role of Humans –with a capital H – in winemaking. There is no substitute for the experience, craftsmanship, and talent of a cellar master and their team.

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: No doubt, AI provides many opportunities to improve business processes, from decision-making to creativity or communication. However, just like any other information technology, AI must remain a tool used to improve our lives.

Andrea Scherz: In the hospitality sector, AI will empower us with better business forecasts by leveraging data points like weather, travel behaviour, gas prices, and many more. In the back office, AI will eliminate simple repetitive tasks, so our teams get more time to take care of our guests.

Where would you work if not in your family business?

Andrea Scherz: If I couldn’t work at the Gstaad Palace, I might choose to be an interior designer or have a similar creative job.

Karl Friedrich Scheufele: I would probably be a full-time winemaker at our vineyard in Monestier, France. We acquired the estate in 2012 and converted it to biodynamic winegrowing – a major undertaking I am very passionate about!

Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt: We have similar visions! Even if I had to work somewhere other than Laurent-Perrier, I would want my work to be tied to the land and winegrowing. I appreciate the values of the people who work with nature and its elements. We must respect it, but we must also work for and create from it.

WE CULTIVATE A CAN-DO ATTITUDE

She and her team take care of over 300 employees from 19 different countries, speaking many languages: Carolin Bartel, Director of Human Resources at the Gstaad Palace, takes us behind the scenes of a very special workplace.

Carolin Bartel, what does it take to work at the Gstaad Palace?

It’s a mix of skill sets and talents. First and foremost, a charismatic personality and appearance are a must, especially for those working in customer-facing positions. You need to have a positive “can-do attitude”, the passion for hospitality is surely highly valued as well but can also grow over time. We also value interpersonal skills and honest, open communication. Last but not least, speaking more than one language is an advantage.

What does the Gstaad Palace offer its employees?

Besides working in a unique environment, surrounded by one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, members of the Palace family get many benefits. The staff rooms come with a free cleaning service, and employees get to enjoy the Marmite restaurant and the staff lounge.

We offer free language courses, complimentary tea and coffee, and unlimited access to the «PISCINE», our outdoor pool, during summer. The popular Your Gstaad membership is part of our offer as well; our employees get special benefits at other Swiss Deluxe Hotels, the Europa Park in Germany or free tickets to events like the Menuhin Festival. In addition, as of this summer they will have access to a car sharing service. Plus, we start off each season with the Welcome Cocktail and end the summer season with a farewell BBQ.

How many languages do your employees speak?

Our employees are very international. We have employees from 19 countries, most coming from Italy, Portugal and, of course, Switzerland. From German and Dutch to Polish or French, our team is fluent in most European languages.

What are current challenges you encounter?

One challenge is probably the ever-growing paperwork. Administration of HR-related topics is becoming more complex. We support our employee’s way beyond an HR department’s regular tasks and services. We also run the staff

56

accommodations consisting of 197 rooms and 276 beds. That’s like a second hotel and requires a lot of coordination with Housekeeping. But, you know, we cultivate the “can-do attitude” and see any challenge as an opportunity to grow.

What does the present recruitment situation look like?

We are satisfied with the current recruiting situation; however, we admit that in the last years fluctuations in this matter were not uncommon.

Why not hiring robots?

Seeing people grow, both in professional experiences as well as in personalities, sometimes over many years, is one of the best experiences while working in human resources especially in a hotel. I personally could not imagine, to just upload a new software to teach the robot something, we prefer to develop our teams on a more personal side. It costs a little more, but on the long run it pays off.

TEAM SUSTAINABILITY

For more than 110 years, over 3 generations, in Summer and in Winter, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of our home, the Saanenland; “Sustainability” has always been in the DNA of the Gstaad Palace, way before it became a cosmopolitan trend we constantly hear of nowadays.

In order to lead by example, consequentially aiming to elevate our “Sustainable Projects” to the next level, we gathered a group of dedicated “Palace Family Members”, to launch our very first “Team Sustainability”.

Our “Team Sustainability” is representing a fundamental stake across all different departments necessary to operate a hotel. From operations, such like the Culinary Team, Housekeeping, IT or Engineering, to administrational departments,

like Purchasing, Human Resources or Sales & Marketing and many more, all the way up to our passionate Owner & General Manager.

Every member is dedicated to truly make an everlasting impact, for a better future for all of us.

We fully believe that we can have a positive and meaningful impact, by leaving no area untouched. As we’re expecting amazing news with our new sustainable initiatives, we kindly invite you to stay tuned for great news to come.

PS: We have seven charging outlets for your electric vehicle!

DORA LIVE BAND'S BIRTH HOUR

In 2006, lead singer Dora Kuvuna, keyboarder Jeremy Rassat and guitarist Sébastien Pintiaux created the Dora Live Band – just four hours before their first performance. Sound engineer Thomas Petit, saxophonist Alexander Chadwicks, percussionist Anthoine Vial-Collet and Sydney Ferrier, backing singer and lead have joined along the way. Today, their concerts have become a musical staple at the Gstaad Palace.

Dora Kuvuna, what inspired you to pursue a music career and eventually lead a band?

Music has always been a big part of my family life, even as a child. However, finding the right people to evolve with on a human and musical level helped me decide to become a professional singer.

How and when did your adventure at the Gstaad Palace start?

Actually, our band was born at the Gstaad Palace, just a few hours before our very first performance! After studying hospitality here in Switzerland, I really wanted to work at the prestigious Gstaad Palace. The first try didn’t succeed, so I sent a demo CD in a scented pink envelope, which ended up in the hands of Andrea Scherz. He called me at 3.00 pm the next day to book me for the following day.

By 10.00 pm, I had found two musicians to accompany me. We found ourselves performing in the Salle Baccarat for the very first time in front of several influential individuals attending the 2006 Tennis Tournament Cocktail.

62

Apparently, we were successful, and Mr. Scherz extended our stay for four days to refine our repertoire. Thus, began the lively nights at The Lobby Bar.

Can you tell us more about your journey of forming a band and finding your voice?

The connection between Jeremy, Sebastien, and me was not just professional… Our chemistry was just right. Over the years, new musicians from England, France, and Switzerland have enriched our group. I feel very fortunate to have met such talented and wholesome individuals.

What sets you apart from other bands in the industry?

It’s both the connection with our audience and our dynamic repertoire. Most clients know us personally, and we are on friendly, familial terms. Plus, we constantly tackle new musical challenges by creating our own remixes and always looking for fresh inspiration.

What was your most memorable performance at the Gstaad Palace?

Our very first New Year’s Eve! Mr. Scherz challenged us to get people dancing in the Salle Baccarat years ago when guests were just coming for a peaceful family night. Today, everyone is dancing on the tables, it’s absolute madness! New Year’s Eve at the Palace has become a Gstaad classic, our greatest source of pride.

How do you select your songs, considering your diverse audience?

Our audience is easy to please yet highly demanding, as they are seasoned travellers who have seen and experienced a lot. We’ve always tried to enjoy freedom on stage. That’s why we don’t work with a setlist. I never know which song I will sing next unless I ask for it. Everything is created right there, in the moment.

How has the Gstaad Palace shaped who you are today?

We have travelled the world while embracing the Palace spirit to always be at our clients’ service. Talent is just a fraction of success in our profession. We have had to acquire discipline, diplomacy, and consistency along our journey. We also gained valuable experience in management and marketing, positioning ourselves as accomplished entrepreneurs.

What are your next artistic goals and career milestones?

Since we started, we’ve remixed favourite songs for all ages and backgrounds, adapting them to modern tastes. Our next goal is to promote these remixes through videos, international events marketing. In addition we would like to perform at top music festivals and clubs.

UP IN THE SKY

For over 30 years, Fabrice Bielmann has been giving his passengers the birds-eye view of the Saanenland region. We’ve talked to the experienced paragliding pilot and instructor about his job, the region, and the time a passenger played the accordion mid-air.

Fabrice, why is Gstaad a premier destination for paragliding enthusiasts?

The Saanenland is a magnificent mountain region with superb take-off and landing sites for many unforgettable flights. It all depends on the weather conditions, of course. But we often benefit from great thermal wind conditions, all day long from sunrise to sunset.

Can you share some memorable stories from your paragliding adventures in Gstaad?

What safety measures and precautions do you implement to ensure that paragliding is a safe experience in the region?

Paragliding Gstaad Switzerland has over 36 years of experience in paragliding. Our pilots all have the tandem flying license issued by the Swiss Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (SHV). We know the region and its weather conditions inside out. Thanks to evolving technology, we have in-depth information about the wind conditions on the region’s peaks literally at our fingertips on the smartphone. The biggest risk is maybe the fact that it can get quite addictive…

I don’t even know where to start. We’ve had so many over the past 30 years! Our youngest passenger so far has been a three-year-old toddler; our oldest a very fit 90-year-old. I was very impressed with both of them. Also, there was this one passenger who insisted on flying with his accordion so he could play his music in the air. And he did! Another time, we had the groom of a big wedding flying with us, all nice and shiny in his wedding suit. He wanted to surprise the bride, who was waiting for him in the middle of the landing field with all the guests. We have so many interesting stories to tell! I recommend everyone to come and make their own paragliding memory.
