Choosing Classes: Things to Consider!

Balance your schedule by choosing a mix of core classes, major requirements, and electives! It can also be helpful to balance STEM classeswithhumanitiesclassestodiversifyyourworkload. Always prepare in advance by using the “Browse Classes” and “Plan Ahead”featuresonGUExperience.

Tip: Create a document to note class restrictions, required prerequisites,corequesites,linkedsections,andcourseattributes. Check RateMyProfessors! The same class can be taught by different professorsatdifferenttimes.Thiscanmakeorbreakyourexperience! Some large lectures have discussion, recitation, or labs linked with the course. Make sure you note the CRNs (course registration numbers) fortheselinkedsections AND theCRNforthemainlecture.

Consider registering for Mastering the Hidden Curriculum (MHC), a 3credit class for FGLI students (that can fulfill your Pathways to Social Justicerequirement)!

Academic Resource Center (ARC)

The ARC, located on Leavey 3, offers disability support, academic support, and student-athlete support! Visit the ARC website to review academic accommodations or to access drop-in office hours, worksheets, webinars, foreign language tutoring, and other services!

Department Help

Take advantage of free support via the Writing Center, the Math Assistance Center (MAC) and the DepartmentofChemistry!

Lauinger Library

Always check Lauinger Library and course reserves! Lau gives you access to Consortium Requests, Interlibrary Loan Requests, and many academicjournals.

CMEA Resources

The CMEA Book Co-Op Library allows students to rent free books for the entire semester! If the CMEA Library doesn’t have the book you need, apply for the CMEA Book Loan Scholarship! If approved, the CMEA buys the book for the student to use for the semester, which is then returnedtotheCo-OpLibrary.

Pro Tips!

Although GSP grants cannot cover textbooks, check out our Book Resource Guide here! Make sure you wait to buy textbooks until classes start (sometimes, they aren’t actually necessary)! If they are, remember to buy or rent used!

1.Put yourself out there – your first year in college is the best/easiesttimetomakenewfriends!

2.Go to office hours with a goal in mind – build rapport withyourprofessors,oraskspecificquestions!

3.Be strategic with how you manage your time and nail downanorganizationalsystem(GCal,Notion,etc.)!

4.Read your syllabus carefully – note important dates and get a feel for your professor’s teaching style and expectations.

5.Set aside time forsocializing,hobbies,andself-care!

6.Bonus: Connect with other GSPers in your classes, andmakeanefforttoreachouttofirst-genfaculty!

DON’Ts

1.Don’t work against yourself – schedule classes and activitiesfortimeswhenyoufeelmostproductive!

2.Don’t feel pressured to decide on a major – it’s normal totaketimetoexploredifferentfieldsandclasses!

3.Don’t take more than 15 credits (5 classes) during your firstsemester,toavoidfeelingoverwhelmed!

4.Don’t procrastinate – try to do major assignments as theycome,andavoidskippingclass!

5.Don’t be afraid to ask for help, whether that’s from your dean, TAs, or friends! Reach out to GSP for help locatingspecificresources.

6.Don’t give in to imposter syndrome –youbelonghere!
