Finding Classes

Try and prepare in advance by looking at the course catalog and using the Canvas page

Think about potential majors and create a mix of both core classes and electives (pre-requisites, major requirements, etc.)

Look up professors on RateMyProfessor; usually there are multiple sections of one class taught by various professors at differing days/times

PRO TIP: Some of the larger lectures have discussion, recitation, or labs, linked with the course. Make sure you note the CRNS (course registration #) to the section alongside main section CRN to avoid registration issues

Consider signing up for Mastering the Hidden Curriculum (MHC), a class for FGLI students

Extra Info

Add/drop period: allows you to try out classes & change your schedule without a W on your transcript

For any questions, contact your academic dean first! Here are some solutions to common registration errors!

Academic & book Resources

Academic Resource Center (ARC)

The ARC offers academic accommodations, webinars & worksheets, foreign language tutoring, & so much more! They not only have tips on college academics but also give extra resources for students in need.

Subject-Specific Resources

Visit the Writing Center or Math Assistance Center! Check with the department for extra resources if you ever need help in a specific class or subject

Georgetown

Always check Lauinger Library and course reserves!

CMEA's Book Co-Op Library: students can rent books from CMEA for the entire semester (for FREE)! If the CMEA Library doesn't have a certain textbook, apply for the CMEA Book Loan Scholarship! If approved, the CMEA buys the book for the student to use that semester, which is then returned to the Co-Op Library.

Pro Tips

Pro Tip 1: Rent or buy used!

Pro Tip 2: Check out GSP’s book resource guide (it is updated each semester and shared via the weekly!)

Pro Tip 3: Wait to buy some books until you know if they are necessary.

More Resources

Check out our free tutoring resources here or apply for a GSP Necessity Grant (make sure to review the tutoring grant policy first)!

Moving to college can be stressful and sometimes the adjustment is hard. But there are lots of people on campus, faculty, GSP, and more that are here to help and see you succeed!
