New Degree Programs Continued - Issue 2
B.S. & M.S. in Biomedical Sciences- This program is proposed as a 4+1 program for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in a professional health area-medicine, pharmacy, veterinary, dental, etc. In addition, there is a growing need in the work force for students with advanced degrees in biomedical sciences in a variety of potential careers. This program is expected to be interdisciplinary with involvement from the biology and biochemistry programs in COSM as well as potentially programs in the Waters College of Health Professions.
M.S. in Data Science- Data Science is an interdisciplinary field combining applied statistics and mathematical foundations with the algorithmic and computational thinking utilized in computer science. A data scientist should have the mathematical and statistical tools to collect and analyze data; the programmatic knowledge to manage, visualize, transform and warehouse the data; and the ethical practice and accountability that accompanies the responsibility of large data sets. Data science is a rapidly growing field.
Ph.D. in Advanced Materials-Materials Science is an interdisciplinary STEM field integrating biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and engineering. The discipline centers on the preparation, structural analysis, and functionality of all classes of materials. Advanced materials refer to a category of materials that have been engineered or designed to possess specific and often superior properties compared to traditional materials. These materials are typically developed through innovative processes and technologies and are used in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, electronics, energy, healthcare, and more.
The department chairs have already begun efforts to assemble working groups to develop the curriculum and draft the program proposals for these degrees. At this time, we are waiting for notification from Academic Affairs on which of the programs will get the green light to move forward with the target for a fall 2025 launch.
