WHY GIRL SCOUT CAMP?

Girl Scout camp is a place where girls get to try new things and overcome fears while gaining confidence and independence. It’s where girls will make new friends in an environment just for girls. It’s where girls get to be Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers and Leaders. It’s where girls Camp like a G.I.R.L.!

INTRODUCING AN EYE-POPPING Summer of Adventure for Grades 6-12 Girl Scouts NEW THIS YEAR Grades 6-12 Campers May Attend Overnight Camp at Lots of Places!

WHOA! SAY WHAT?!

You read that right. We’re switching it up in 2018. In a bold move aimed at getting more Badgerland Girl Scouts to attend camp we’re partnering with our sisters at Girl Scouts of Manitou. Together, we’re teaming up to offer high-quality, resident camp experiences to Badgerland girls at Manitou’s beautiful sites: Camp Evelyn and Camp Manitou. Additional programs will also be held at Badgerland’s Camp Ehawee, Camp Brandenburg and other sites. Badgerland’s well known Leadership Camps will be held at Camp Ehawee. Troops wanting to tackle troop camping at Camp Black Hawk in Antigo this summer are encouraged to do so! Besides these programs, we’re also debuting exciting new G.I.R.L. adventures which will be offered at different locations. They are amazing!

How It Will Work Older Girl Scouts, those currently in grades 6-12, will choose from an exciting line-up of multi-night, resident camp programs at Manitou’s Camp Evelyn in Sheboygan County and Camp Manitou in Manitowoc County.

Badgerland Girl Scouts will experience camp alongside girls from Manitou Council in sessions that range from three nights to five nights to...12 nights!

Take the Bus to Camp Girls have the option to ride the bus to and from camp for a flat $25 rate. Buses will run from Madison.

Most of the multi-night camp sessions are held at Camp Evelyn located near Plymouth. The camp is just 100 miles from Madison, 200 miles from La Crosse and about 130 miles from Beloit and Platteville.

Two camps will be held at Camp Manitou in Shoto which is 100 miles from Madison, 211 miles from La Crosse, 162 miles from Beloit and 218 miles from Platteville.

Busing is also provided for the programs at our own Camp Ehawee in La Crosse county.

FAQS More Info about Older Girl Camps Why Are These Changes Happening? And Why Now? Our singular goal is to get more Girl Scouts to try camping. That’s why we’re rolling out big, bold changes for girls of all ages this year. We are shaking it up with new programs at new camps with new schedules for older campers. Changes for younger campers include shorter camp sessions at Camp Ehawee and single-night “intro to camping” programs for first and second graders at Camp Brandenburg in Dane County. Again, our goal is to create programs with the right themes for the right amount of time in the right place at the right price that will appeal to girls and their parents. We’re also excited that by implementing these changes, we are more than doubling program opportunities for all Badgerland Girl Scouts this summer!

Why Camp Evelyn?

Girl Scouts of Manitou consistently attracts more girls to its camps and offered to host Badgerland girls this summer. We jumped at the opportunity to give our girls fresh choices and new experiences. Just like Badgerland, the Manitou camp staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about delivering memorable and momentous camp experiences to the girls.

What About Leadership Camps?

We’ve got you covered and with options! Badgerland’s famous Leadership Camps will be held at Camp Ehawee this summer. Girls on the camp leadership path with CIT I and II and LEAP, will be working with younger Girl Scouts at Camp Ehawee in La Crosse County. Girl Scouts who want to do Counselor-inTraining at Camp Evelyn have the option of signing up for those leadership camps, too. So many choices!

What’s Happening at Camp Black Hawk This Summer?

All troops are welcome to head north to CBH and spend time at a do-your-own Troop Camp. Camp Black Hawk will be available to Girl Scouts for rustic camping June 8 through August 31. Troops can overnight at Waunagon Lodge or set up camp at a tent site...troop choice!

Are These Changes “Forever”? Will Camp Be the Same Next Year?

The summer of ‘18 is a year of exploration for Badgerland as we dig in and earnestly work toward building attendance at overnight programs. The changes that are happening this year are in direct response to the early information we’ve gleaned from surveys and focus groups of Badgerland families. It’s too early to say what Badgerland Summer 2019 will look like. But, we’ll continue to be responsive to what our membership wants with the goal of ensuring every girl in Badgerland gets the chance to get outside and experience Girl Scout camp.

What Other Badgerland Camps Are Available Just to Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors?

We’re super-charged to introduce G.I.R.L. Adventures! There are four multi-night adventures planned for go-getters, innovators, risk-takers and leaders. Each session is designed to appeal to an older Girl Scouts’ taste for adventure and knowledge. See these exciting new programs on pages 21-23. Additionally, Badgerland is running an awesome 5-night session at Camp Ehawee with the theme Random Fandom!

Introducing Camp Evelyn

This summer, most of our multi-day, overnight resident camp programs will be held at Camp Evelyn.

Camp Evelyn is owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Manitou and located near Plymouth in Sheboygan County. The camp is situated on 240 acres of wooded property. Girls enjoy water activities (including paddle boats!) on a lake and river. Camp Evelyn also boasts a sparkling swimming pool. There are trails for hiking and open space for games and large-group activities. Campers sleep on cots or bunks in cabins or in platform tents. See more details about life at Camp Evelyn on pages 9-11.

And... Camp Manitou

Two of the multi-day, overnight resident camp programs will be held at Camp Manitou which is also owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Manitou. This camp is on the banks of Serenity Lake on 140 acres in Shoto in Manitowoc County. Campers attending the Bits and Bridles session at Camp Manitou will sleep in the Pine Troop House or the Cedars building and the Water Adventures campers get to sleep in tents on the shore of Serenity Lake!

Camp Evelyn highlights include the Mullet River, swimming pool, a lake, open areas for games, trails for hiking and plenty of room for all-season, outdoor fun. Most facilities at Camp Evelyn include fully equipped kitchens, a great room for activities, fireplace and bathrooms.

Camp Ehawee (pronounced e-how-e) is home to a swimming pool, Crystal Creek, nature trails, amphitheater, archery range, athletic fields, an arts building and indoor nature center. Campers live in a bunkhouse, yurt, teepee, cabin or platform tent. Each area has a unit house with bathrooms.

LIFE AT CAMP

CAMP LIFE DETAILS Health and Safety Safety is our first priority. Our camps meet stringent county, state and national standards. The local law enforcement agencies are notified of our camp sessions. Each staff member is certified in CPR and first aid and many are lifeguards. A health supervisor is on-site at all times, and a doctor is on-call.

Our Camp Staff All staff members go through an intense screening, selection and training process. The camp staff learn how to keep girls safe while still having fun. All staff pass a thorough screening process including criminal background checks. Each staff member is certified in CPR and first aid and many are lifeguards.

Camp counselors participate in extensive staff training – covering topics like camper behavior and support, creating safe space, outdoor activities, roles of the counselor, group dynamics, emergency procedures and so much more.

Cost of Camp We’re excited to present lower-priced camps. Badgerland’s overnight camps are $65 per night, a significant decrease from previous years. Most of Camp Evelyn’s week-long camps are $380 for a five night program.

The cost of each camp program is subsidized by Badgerland Council and Manitou Council. We firmly believe these overnight programs and experiences are important to the Girl Scout experience which is why we cut the price of camp and are underwriting it. Put simply, the cost of operating the camp program is much greater than the cost. If you want to add a camp donation to help offset the full cost, you will have the option to do so when you register her for camp. And, because we want girls to experience camp, Campership scholarships are available to families in need. See details on page 34.

She Can Earn Her Way to Camp With Cookies Girls are strongly encouraged to earn all or part of their way to camp through cookie and ‘in a nutshell’ sales. Paying for all or a portion of her camp program instills independence, pride and self-confidence.

See more details about how she can earn Badgerland Bucks to pay for camp by selling cookies on page 34. And, yes, Badgerland Bucks can be redeemed to pay for her camps at Evelyn and Manitou.

Special Needs If your camper has special needs including food allergies, health concerns or mobility limitations please notify us in advance. Badgerland Council will seek to accommodate special needs whenever possible.

Who Attends Camp Girl Scout camp is for girls in grades K-12. Girls who are not already members of Girl Scouts simply pay the $35 Girl Scout membership dues upon camp registration.

LIFE AT CAMP

CAMP LIFE DETAILS Where She’ll Sleep CAMP EHAWEE Ehawee campers live in a bunkhouse, cabins, platform tents, yurt or teepees with other girls in her age group. There is a central shower house. Each unit has its own unit house and bathroom with electricity, running water and flush toilets. The camp staff stay in the unit with the girls.

CAMP EVELYN Evelyn’s campers also live in platform tents or cabins. Counselors sleep in tents or cabins that are VERY close by, but not in the same tents or cabins as girls. Four of the five sleeping units have composting waste latrines and one has flush toilets. Main camp, where girls spend most of the day, have flush toilets and showers.

CAMP MANITOU Horse-loving campers attending the Bits and Bridles session sleep in a troop house or cabin with bathrooms and showers. Campers at the Water Adventures session sleep in tents on the shore of Serenity Lake and have access to bathrooms and showers along with latrines very close by.

What She’ll Eat Meals at camp are girl-friendly and healthy. Most meals are prepared by our cooks and eaten in the dining hall. Camps Evelyn and Manitou campers also cook at least one meal themselves outdoors. Most diets (gluten free, diabetic, vegetarian, vegan, allergies, etc.) can be accommodated by contacting the camp directors two weeks prior to the stay at camp.

Kapers Kapers are chores, important in the Girl Scouting tradition, to learn that everyone must do their share. In small groups, you’ll take turns doing kapers like setting and clearing dining hall tables, sweeping, raising and lowering the flag and keeping camp beautiful.

Keeping in Touch With Your Camper Letters and Email While campers can’t bring cellphones to camp, a letter or email from home can make the difference between a good day and a great day! Mail a letter to your daughter before the session or put mail in the camper mailbox at check-in. Camp Evelyn also offers a 1 or 2-way email service for purchase by parents.

LIFE AT CAMP EVELYN Camp Fun 3 Ways

A Camp Evelyn Tradition!

All-Camp Action Girl Scouts love the magic that comes only from a large group all together, so a few times per week, the whole camp gets together for talent shows, campfires, kickball games, karaoke dance parties, capture the flag, carnivals, scavenger hunts, pool parties, guest performances, skits and songs. If all the girls can imagine it, all the girls can make it happen… all over camp.

Unit Unity The girls who live together in your camp community, called a “unit” become your closest friends. They are close to your age, and you experience so much together. You choose the activities to dive into as a group. Maybe you’ll stay up late and hear stories of the constellations, or form a noodle train in the pool, cook-out your supper, conquer an obstacle course, jump in Crystal Lake, or inspire each other with your art and science projects.

Individual Adventures Because each of us is special, with special talents and interests, at least three times per day you’ll get to choose an activity that is open to girls from the entire camp, not just your unit. You’ll make new friends and try activities that might not be selected by your unit mates. River stomping, archery, unique arts, SUP, kayaking, cooking, outdoor baking, and games and sports are among the many choices.

At Camp Evelyn, you will get a special “Bear Scare” bracelet that has its own story about two campers who save each other from a bear when hiking in the woods. You will get a new bead for your bracelet each summer at camp. When you are away from camp your “Bear Scare” bracelet will remind you that, “Your friends will be there between you and the bear.” Any obstacle you meet can be “the bear.” You can count on your camp friends to be there to support you and cheer you on.

As a nature detective, you will dig into the mysteries of nature and science first-hand. The forest, hills and mighty river will be your playground for orienteering, constructing shelters, and tracking animals. Climb rock walls, zoom on a high ropes course on a trip away from camp, and get up close to live animals with a professional wildlife specialist.

Earn and receive an outdoor badge for your age level.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are part of almost everything we do, including baking and cooking. If you mix vinegar and baking soda, you create a volcano, instead of a great dinner. Jump into our extreme cook-off challenge and find out what happens if you add too much baking powder or just the right amount of cilantro… and what on earth is yeast? Dive into STEM cooking experiments and more as you cook over the campfire, make yummy snacks and plan a special meal for your family when you go home! Visit a local group to see how food really goes all the way from farm to your table.

Let your imagination run wild as you make creations inspired by nature. Draw, paint, and create as you take in the beauty of the great outdoors. You’ll splatter paint during archery art, tie-dye, create sparkling paint bombs, produce dreamy stargazing galaxy art, and sculpt with clay. Let nature be your inspiration! Visit the famous John Michael Kohler Art Center. Earn and receive an art badge for your age level.

Enjoy all that water has to offer and get your fingers more wrinkly than they have ever been! Take a sunset swim in the pool, look for aquatic creatures in the Mullet River, go kayaking and stand up paddle boarding in Crystal Lake, and have a floating lunch! You will stay cool by making slushies and playing water balloon battleship. Sail on beautiful Lake Michigan during your trip to SEAS - The Sailing Education Association.

Let your inner horsewoman shine! Learn basic horseback riding, grooming and stable management.

We will start from the beginning and build your equestrian skills, spending at least two hours a day at the stable. Be sure to pack long pants and sturdy shoes with heels. You will “camp” in a Camp Manitou building during this session.

Your dreams of living your life on a beach are about to come true. You’ll wake up, and the first step out of your tent will be onto Serenity Beach. You’ll canoe, kayak, stand-up paddle board, fish and compete for the best sand sculpture! You’ll travel to Woodland Dunes Nature Center to explore new waterfronts and wetlands, and take action to keep them clean and healthy for wildlife.

Bring some of your cosplay supplies and be prepared for a week of fandom fun. Meet with other superfans of your favorite book, TV show, movie or comic and get ready to fangirl out. Build your skills during the week in offense, defense, crafting, teamwork, strength, wisdom, and healing to prepare for a dungeons and dragons style face off at the end of the week. The last hero standing will earn their fandom the “Fangirl Trophy”. You’ll also have time to ‘battle’ villains, share and write fanfiction and talk about your favorite characters during this fully immersed fandom week at camp.

Are you ready for a rustic camp experience with your troop mates? Grab your tents and let’s go! You and your friends will learn outdoor survival skills like knot tying, shelter building, and orienteering. Enjoy meals over the campfire and sing camp songs as you hike in the woods. To top off your Camp Manitou adventure, you can paddle your way around Serenity Lake on a paddle board or kayak and climb a ROCK WALL! Be ready for some “wild” surprises too!

Notes: The camping fee includes all activities, camping space, bathroom/shower access, drinking water, wood, matches, paper, cooking equipment, picnic table, and a fire ring. Troops must bring their own food (including snacks and beverages), tents, sleeping gear, and any special supplies. An adult who has completed Troop Overnight Certification II must accompany each troop. Adults will be responsible for the supervision of their troop and should consult Safety Activity Checkpoints in the Volunteer Toolkit when making plans. Grab the troop and hit the road for Camp Black Hawk located near Antigo in Langlade County. Waunagon Lodge will be available for bunking. Or, go rustic and pitch your tents anywhere you want on the site – it’s troop choice! Troops will guide their own camp experience with no on-site camp staff support. Pack your food and sleeping gear for a fun trip north and be sure to make time to explore the trout stream, hike the trails and listen to the loons floating along the two lakes. Maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights one night!

Want to be a camp counselor someday? This two week leadership camp will focus on preparing you to enter the CIT Program next year. Some highlights include learning basic outdoor skills, games and songs. You will also dive into identifying your personal leadership skills, learning about effective communication and getting lots of practice working with younger girls. You will be on site at Camp Ehawee during the Hogwarts and Art themed weeks. That means you’ll get to have a blast participating in the all camp activities. BONUS - at the end of this session you will be awarded your very own camp name. We can’t wait to see who you become!

You’ll be at camp during Rocket Science week. How cool is that? Your days will be spent learning about personal leadership and girl development while personalizing your experience working with younger girls. You will also have lots of time for swimming in the sparkling pool, hopping the creek and telling stories around the campfire. Get to know yourself better and get a handle on what’s important to you and what a healthy relationship looks like. Expect lots of hands-on activities, group discussions and team building. The first day we’ll visit a train station transformed into a bustling shopping and activity center. From there it’s on to the City Museum where we’ll sleep (ha!) and spend the night exploring the countless slides, tubes, tunnels and caves. Spend the next morning at the world famous St. Louis Zoo and then on to the amazing Science Center where we’ll sleep under the stars in the planetarium. REGISTRATION DETAILS Refunds and Cancellations Refunds will be issued in the event of illness or critical family emergency if Badgerland is notified prior to the start of the session. In case of illness, a written refund request (including a statement from the attending physician) must be submitted within one week.

Cancellations received in writing at least three weeks before the start of the session are eligible for a refund, less the deposit.

Full fees, including deposit, will be refunded in the unlikely event the program is canceled.

Campers who leave early due to homesickness, parental request or Code of Conduct violations are not eligible for refunds.

What to Expect Next 1 ) Registration Confirmation Once you’re registered, you will receive an automated email receipt confirming her spot at camp. Don’t see it?

Check your spam folder.

2 ) CampDoc.com - Electronic Camper Information System About one week after registration confirmation, you will receive an email from CampDoc.com. (NOTE: CampDoc emails go out in early April; if you sign up before then your CampDoc email will arrive in April.) This is our online information system for all important Badgerland Camps’ camper information including health records and other forms. This information must be completed no less than three weeks prior to program attendance. CampHERO campers must complete all CampDoc info by June 15. Some Badgerland programs do not require completion of CampDoc.com information, thus you may not receive the CampDoc notification.

Programs requiring a different process will be notified directly by Badgerland after registration.

3 ) Buddy Requests Girls may request up to three buddies and we will do our best to place them together in the same sleeping area at camp or the same group at a day program. Buddy requests are made in CampDoc. 4 ) Information Packets Read your camp’s Information Packet. These packets, written especially for your Girl Scout’s camp, contain camp information exclusive to your camper’s experience, including a Trading Post Credit Card Authorization Form. Information packets for Camp Ehawee, Sleepaway Camp at Camp Brandenburg and CampHERO will be available in April at gsbadgerland.org. Day campers, your program details will be emailed two weeks prior to the program.

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT How to Register for Camps Evelyn and Manitou If your camper is attending a program held at Camp Evelyn or Camp Manitou: You will register for these camps directly with Girl Scouts of Manitou.

Registration is first come, first served for all camp sessions.

Register and pay online: gsmanitou.org and click Camping then click Summer Camp Manitou Paper Registration Form: Call 920.565.4575.

Paying For Camp Evelyn and Camp Manitou

Full payment is required at time of registration for a spot to be held at camp. Financial assistance is available if needed for a Girl Scout to attend camp. See Campership details on page 34. Badgerland financial aid is available to girls attending programs at these two camps. If a campership is requested, a spot will be held until the application is reviewed and the registration is processed.

A confirmation email will be sent to the email address on file for the camper. You should expect this confirmation email to arrive in 1-2 business days. This email will contain links to vital information & provide details about required health and transportation information you will need to provide to us. It is important that you read through this email and the links very soon after receiving it.

Manitou Council refunds are considered on a case-by-case basis with 3 weeks notice or due to an emergency situation.

Camps Evelyn and Manitou Buddy Request

Campers may request to be placed in the same unit as her friend(s). To ensure this, please list your camper’s buddy name on her registration form. Buddies must register for the same session and dates.

Camps Evelyn and Manitou Health Documentation Requirements

Each camper staying 5 nights or more must provide documentation of a health assessment conducted by a medical professional within the last 24 months, a health history and an immunization record.

Campers staying 4 nights or less must provide a health history, although an assessment and immunization record may be submitted to be kept on file for future summer camping.

CAMP BUSING

HER SUMMER ADVENTURE BEGINS ON THE RIDE TO CAMP

Transportation for Camp Evelyn, Camp Manitou and Camp Ehawee resident campers is available to and from camp for $25.

Hop on a bus to camp for transportation that’s fun for girls and easy for parents!

Camp counselors or trained adult volunteers supervise the ride, play road trip games and sing songs with the girls to kickstart their camp experience.

She can ride the bus both ways or pick and choose.

Not sure if you want your camper to hitch a ride with us? That’s okay. Parents always have the option to drop off or pick up at camp. Parents who choose to drop off their campers, always have the option to tour the camp and visit her sleeping area to see where she’s staying.

Attending camp is consistently cited as girls’ favorite memories of their Girl Scout years.

By sending your girl to camp, she will develop leadership and outdoor skills and develop a deep appreciation for our natural world. Girl Scout camp gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore and have fun under the guidance of trained and caring camp counselors.

Resident camp, Camp Ehawee, is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA).

Accreditation is earned only after successfully meeting ACA’s high standards during an extensive review. These strict requirements are recognized nationally. Additionally, camps Brandenburg, Ehawee, Evelyn and Manitou meet safety standards set forth by Girl Scouts of the USA and county and state regulations.
