Girl Scouting’s Highest Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with completing leadership prerequisites designed to develop the leadership skills needed to accomplish a Girl Scout Gold Award project.

This award represents a girl’s commitment to herself and to her community as she focuses on leadership, career exploration, personal challenges and completes an enduring project that will benefit her community. It takes many hours of preparation, planning and work to accomplish the goals a girl has set for herself through her Gold Award Project. It is notable that only about five percent of eligible girls earn this award!

A special note to today’s Gold Awardees: As a Girl Scout, you are part of the sisterhood of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement comprised of more than 10 million girls worldwide who are using their talents to positively impact their communities. With your talent and passion, you can make changes in your community that reach people around the world. Congratulations on your remarkable achievement!

When Marissa was feeling overwhelmed at school, her guidance counselor suggested something that would forever change the way she handled stress. Since being introduced to yoga, she’s been an advocate for mindfulness and its benefits for young people.

Marissa realized that she wasn’t the only one dealing with pressures from school, sports, jobs and home life. This inspired her to plan, coordinate and lead 20-minute yoga sessions for elementary and high school students to show them basic yoga poses, and to explain the importance of breathing and relaxation. She even created a video that will be shared with incoming freshmen to help them alleviate stressors they might face as a high schooler.

While in the process of earning her Gold Award, Marissa says she was surprised at how open people were to trying something new when she shared why she was so passionate about it. There was even an extra perk: leading the students in yoga helped her realize she might like to teach or become a guidance counselor herself some day!

The Water and the Cross

City of Purple Goes Green

Members of St. Ann’s Parish in McFarland have a new, beautiful space for prayer and peace, thanks to Tori’s hard work. The church had a spot in its courtyard that couldn’t grow plants and desperately needed some attention, so Tori stepped up with a unique idea that’s brought beauty to an unexpected place.

As an innovator, it’s natural for Kyra to see a problem and brainstorm creative ways to solve it. When she observed how much recyclable material was being thrown into the trash at school, she saw it as an opportunity to make a difference in her community.

Instead of the greenery or artwork that decorated the rest of the courtyard, Tori designed and built the prayerful area out of rocks and stones. She also put up a barn wood cross she made by hand.

A learning moment for Tori during her Gold journey was delegating tasks. She worked with other members of the church, heard and implemented their ideas, and a few times, had to respectfully decline suggestions. Though difficult at times, Tori says these traits are ones that will help grow her leadership skills.

Kyra wanted to educate the citizens of Stoughton on the harmful effects of not recycling while understanding how to properly recycle. She redesigned the city’s recycling webpage, developed an infographic for the city planner and distributed info-cards city wide. Then, Kyra did presentations at schools, which she says was most rewarding.

While earning her Gold Award, Kyra says she learned a lot about herself, including how to persevere. She come across challenges, but found alternate solutions and kept pushing forward to reach her goal.

Fire Safety and Protection

Maggie’s project was a welcome addition to the park.

Growing up, her family often visited the state park to hike, snowshoe and cross-country ski. When it came time to choose her project, she knew she wanted to give back to the place that meant so much to her.

She worked with park staff and mason apprentices to restore an 80-year-old outdoor fireplace, and to build onto it. They harvested stones from the park, washed it and laid it into place. When they were done, they had a five-ton, six-foot-tall fireplace.

While completing the project, Maggie says she honed valuable lifelong skills, such as professional communication, time management and goal setting.

Through her hard work, families and nature lovers have a warm place to gather for years to come.

When a string of house fires devastated southwest Wisconsin, including her hometown, Sarah was moved to take action. To do so, she wrote, filmed and produced a video about fire safety. The video premiered with a public screening, then was posted online, shared on social media and shown to elementary school students.

Sarah learned a lot during the research phase while becoming an expert on fire safety. When she would introduce her video before a showing, Sarah says she could feel other people understanding the video’s impact if ever they found themselves in that situation.

The process of organizing a team of individuals and delegating tasks helped Sarah gain confidence, patience and leadership skills she will use in the future.

Operation New Library

Lily was concerned with the lack of knowledge among her community when it comes to selfdefense. With many of her peers preparing to go to college, she wanted to show them ways to protect themselves in dangerous or uncomfortable situations. She took action and taught a free, safety smarts workshop.

When Alexus heard the Muscoda Public Library was getting a new home, she jumped at the chance to help. A self-proclaimed bookworm, this project was not only exciting, but personal for Alexus.

During the project’s planning phase, Lily was met with unexpected challenges, which she worked to overcome. She says she learned the importance of being flexible, and understanding that while working on a project like the Gold Award, things might not go as expected – and sometimes that’s a good thing.

She also says the project helped her become more of a ‘Go-Getter’ by pushing through the challenges to meet her goal.

Alexus organized and motivated students and community members to help move thousands of books, DVDs and furniture. Throughout the project, she helped build awareness of the library’s resources, and eventually proposed a new library moving policy to the American Library Association that would make future moves in other communities more organized.

Earning her Gold Award is something she’s been passionate about since her early Girl Scouting years.

Alexus says she gained the courage to be in charge during the project – especially as a young person in the community. At the end of the move, she felt even more confident in her leadership abilities.

Scent Wall for the Capitol K9’s

Since the brainstorming phase, Jillian knew she wanted her project to be about animals. She understood K9 units are important for citizen safety and valuable for their ability to sniff out trouble. So, she worked with the UW Police Department to build a new scent wall for the dogs to use as a training aid.

As someone who’s passionate about the environment and agriculture, creating a butterfly garden right in her hometown was the perfect opportunity for Heidi.

While working on her project, Jillian says she learned a lot – especially the value of professional communication skills. She overcame unexpected obstacles such as high supply costs and found creative alternatives to solve the problems.

She put in a lot of hard work, but it was all worth it when she finally delivered the scent wall and got to see the K9 units train with it right away. The handlers expressed their gratitude, and told her how much the dogs will learn from using the wall – and in turn, will help keep their community safe.

She understands the repercussions of the declining pollinator population, and wanted to do her part to reverse it. Heidi secured donations for plants that attract bees, butterflies and birds and provide the animals with much-needed resources. By using perennials the garden will be mostly self-sustaining.

Heidi flourished as a leader and decision maker, during her Gold journey. She spoke at a school board meeting to raise awareness and support for the project. Heidi says that because she chose a project she was so passionate about, she felt more motivated to accomplish her goal. In fact, she says the positive impact on the community and the environment was her main drive. The Gold Award was just a bonus!

Break the Monotony!

Outdoor Art Show at Hoard Museum

As a lover of camp, Amanda wanted to find a way to get more people off their electronics and into the community. Her solution: a booklet of community activities, organized by age, season and location.

Being someone who loves and appreciates creativity, it’s no surprise Sarah chose to incorporate local art into her Gold Award project. She wanted to bring more attention to the Hoard Art Museum in Fort Atkinson, as well as the many artists who reside in that area, so Sarah organized an outdoor art show to do just that.

While researching and compiling information for her Gold Award project, Amanda got a taste of freedom; this was her opportunity to take the lead and make her project count. She ran with it, teaching herself how to use publication-formatting software, managing a busy schedule and discovering the perseverance it takes to see a project through. She promoted the booklet in classrooms, through the guidance office, in the community and online.

The most rewarding part, Amanda says, is looking back after it’s all said and done. She can’t help but feel a sense of pride and self-respect in doing something for her community.

She ended up with more than double the number of exhibits she’d hoped for, allowing for a diverse range of artistic styles. The art show was so successful, the National Art Honors Society offered to host the art show in years to come.

She says that because she organized this event at such a young age, she’ll be more comfortable taking on leadership roles while working on big projects in college and in the future. In fact, she herself, as a local artist, intends to pursue a career in design.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. The Silver Award represents a girl’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and in her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others. Working in a group or individually, girls select projects that help them build skills, explore careers and gain leadership.

Girls earning their Silver Awards this year have proven that they are community leaders who are organized, determined and dedicated to improving their communities. These Girl Scouts are true go-getters!

Boy have the last 18 years flew by! It seems like yesterday you were 4 years old and starting Daisies. You have grown into a polite, successful, and responsible young lady.

You have managed many extracurricular activities such as band, choir, Girl Scouts, and multiple sports, as well as part-time work as a CNA, while maintaining the top honors position in your graduating class. You have worked hard at selling Girl Scout cookies for 14 years and, on several occasions, been a top seller. Not only have you worked hard but played hard and enjoyed several Girl Scout Destinations trips. The most memorable being the one to Germany. You have shown success in Girl Scouts by achieving your Bronze, Silver, and, now, the Gold Award. You have helped many community events, local businesses, and neighbors through your 14 years as a Girl Scout. You have been a good leader and role model to younger Girl Scouts. Your father and I are very proud of you and your accomplishments and look forward to supporting you in your future endeavors. You will continue to help others as you fulfill your career goal as a nurse anesthetist. Never forget the ideas and beliefs that Girl Scouts has taught you over the years.
