Renzo Persico, President of Consorzio Costa Smeralda, strongly believes in a destination that has made culture and environmental sustainability two central targets to underscore the island’s historical background and secure its future. “Environmentoriented culture is part of culture in a broad sense. Sardinia must be protected and defended. We are aware that the island is a site of excellence. Our dedication to the environment is rewarded by the area that surrounds us, which must be protected. We are only temporary users of an asset we must hand down to our heirs,” said Persico on the sidelines of the presentation of the Costa Smeralda Prize, the third edition of the literary prize that has rapidly established itself among the major cultural events on the national literary scene. This year’s edition confrms the extensive space given to the most original talents of contemporary culture, and to discussions on major topical issues. The prize-giving ceremony will take place on Saturday, 4 May at 5.00 pm at the Conference Centre in Porto Cervo. “We open the season with the Costa Smeralda Literary Prize, now in its third edition. It has already reached an important milestone, that of being a landmark for great Italian excellence,” says Renzo Persico. “We contribute towards national culture, but we are also a place where young authors and talents, or famous authors can meet and compare notes. In the Italian scene, Sardinia touches remarkable standards through culture. The island is invaded by culture, both archaeological and literary, but the mixed and composite nature of this convergence makes

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s intense sporting season for 2024 with regattas scheduled from May to October has been unveiled, along with the announcement of an important event, the 40th anniversary of the partnership between one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world and its historical partner Rolex. Save these dates in your calendar until July. The season opens in Porto Cervo with the traditional Vela & Golf (24-26 May). It will then be the moment of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta on 4-8 June, which sees, for the third year running, an Italian excellence in the world of fashion join the YCCS as Title Sponsor of the event Following the success of past editions, the Southern Wind RendezVous and Trophy will take place as part of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, an opportunity for a sailing trip to Porto Cervo enhanced by a family-like atmosphere and sportsmanship offered to Southern Wind yachts. An intense June continues with three regattas starting with the eagerly awaited J/24 European Championship on 10-16 June, dedicated to the J/24 Class, one of the most popular keelboats, which has signifcantly contributed to spreading sailing as a sport The fnal event dedicated to the J/24 monotype was held in Porto Cervo in 1996. Another eagerly awaited return is the Grand Soleil Cup, sailed in partnership with Cantiere del Pardo. A feet of some forty boats is expected for the event. The month closes with the Invitational Smeralda 888 on 28-30 June, followed by the Smeralda 888 European Cup on 12-14 July, on board Smeralda 888 yachts designed by renowned yacht designer German Frers especially for the YCCS. The fourth edition of the YCCS J/70 Sailing Clinic takes place on 19-21 July.

L’intensa stagione sportiva dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda per il 2024 con regate in programma da maggio a ottobre è stata svelata, insieme all’annuncio di un importante anniversario, i 40 anni della collaborazione tra uno dei più prestigiosi club nautici al mondo e il suo partner storico Rolex. Ecco le date da non perdere nella prima parte del calendario, fno a luglio. La stagione si apre a Porto Cervo con il tradizionale Vela & Golf (24-26 maggio). E’ poi la volta della Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, dal 4 all’8 giugno, che vede per il terzo anno consecutivo, un’eccellenza italiana nel mondo della moda affanca il YCCS come Title Sponsor della manifestazione. All’interno della Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, a seguito del successo delle passate edizioni, si svolge il Southern Wind RendezVous and Trophy occasione per per una veleggiata a Porto Cervo caratterizzata da uno spirito familiare e allo stesso tempo sportivo offerta alle imbarcazioni del cantiere Southern Wind. Un giugno intenso prosegue con tre regate a partire da un atteso Campionato Europeo J/24, dal 10 al 16 giugno, dedicato alla Classe J/24 tra le barche a chiglia più popolari, che ha contributo signifcativamente alla diffusione della vela sportiva. L’ultimo evento dedicato alla monotipo J/24 si era svolto a Porto Cervo nel 1996. Un altro ritorno molto atteso è anche la Grand Soleil Cup, veleggiata in collaborazione con il Cantiere del Pardo per la quale è attesa una fotta di una quarantina di imbarcazioni. Il mese si chiude con l’Invitational Smeralda 888, dal 28 al 30 giugno, seguita dalla Coppa Europa Smeralda 888, dal 12 al 14 luglio, a bordo delle Smeralda 888, disegnate dal noto yacht designer German Frers appositamente per lo YCCS. Dal 19 al 21 luglio si svolge la quarta edizione della YCCS J/70 Sailing Clinic.

THE LITERARY PRIZE OPENS THE SUMMER WITH LITERATURE IL PREMIO LETTERARIO INAUGURA L’ESTATE SOTTO IL SEGNO DELLA LETTERATURA

The Sardinian coastline as desired by the Aga Khan and culture have always been closely linked ever since the birth of this special place. It is in the wake of an almost 60-year long history and experience that, in 2018, Consorzio Costa Smeralda conceived and instituted a Literary Prize to enhance and promote culture - and literature, in particular - from the onset through the works, projects and testimonies of authors, scholars and illustrious fgures associated with this land and beyond.

The theme of the frst two editions was the sea. From 2022, the thematic horizon was broadened without losing its link with water and the Mediterranean.

Year by year, the Prize has established itself as one of the major cultural events on the national scene, enhancing its calling to showcase the most original talents in contemporary culture, and to discuss major topical issues. The fnalist trios of the Prize in the two award categories, Fiction and Non-Fiction, were presented during the press conference last March, selected by an expert jury comprising Lina Bolzoni, Marcello Fois, Elena Loewenthal and Chiara Valerio, headed by Stefano Salis, the Prize’s Art Director. The fnalists for the 2024 edition - the overall winner will be announced on Saturday, 4 May on the stage of the Conference Centre in Porto Cervoare for Fiction: Ginevra Lamberti with Il pozzo vale più del tempo (Marsilio), Eugenio Murrali with his debut novel Marguerite è stata qui (Neri Pozza) and Evelina Santangelo with Il sentimento del mare (Einaudi).

La costa della Sardegna voluta dalla Aga Khan e la cultura hanno avuto un link importante da sempre, fn dalla nascita di questo luogo speciale. It is the oldest site in the archaeological park, and dates back 6000 years, and is among the oldest testimonies of western European megalithism. In Sardinia this type of tomb seems to be common only in the area of Arzachena.

Nuragic complex of La Prisgiona

The site includes an impressive nuraghe and a nuragic village. The life of the village and the nuraghe spans a long chronological period, from 14th century BC to early 8th century BC. A brief frequentation period in Roman times followed several centuries later.

Tombs of the Giants of Coddu Vecchiu

Impressive burial structures, featuring large stone blocks arranged in the shape of dolmens, date back to the Bronze Age.

The tombs of the Giants of Coddu Vecchiu are among the most spectacular on the island and include a tunnel tomb built between the 21st - 19th centuries BC and an exedra, i.e., a semicircular space in front of the tomb, was added at a later date, 18th - 17th centuries BC.

A large number of follis (large bronze coins) dating back to the early 4th century AD was found in the seas around Arzachena. According to an initial estimate based on the total weight of the fnding, the coins amount to around 30,000-50,000. The discovery was made by a private citizen during a dive, when he noticed metal remains at a shallow depth, not far from the shore.

Necropoli nuragica di Li Muri

Risalente a 6000 anni fa, è il sito più antico del parco archeologico e una delle più antiche testimonianze del megalitismo europeo occidentale. Un tipo di sepolcro che in Sardegna sembra essere diffuso soltanto nell’area di Arzachena.

Complesso di La Prisgiona Il sito include un imponente nuraghe e un villaggio nuragico, la cui vita abbraccia un arco cronologico che va dal XIV sec. a.C. agli inizi dell’VIII sec. a.C.. Diversi secoli dopo, segue una breve frequentazione in età romana. Tombe dei Giganti di Coddu Vecchiu Imponenti strutture sepolcrali risalenti all’Età del Bronzo e caratterizzate dalla presenza di grandi blocchi di pietra disposti a forma di dolmen. Le tombe dei Giganti di Coddu Vecchiu sono considerate tra le più spettacolari dell’isola e comprendono una tomba a galleria realizzata tra il XXI e il XIX secolo a.C. e un’esedra, ovvero lo spazio semicircolare antistante, aggiunta tra il XVIII e il XVII secolo a.C.

Un ricco deposito di follis risalente alla prima metà del IV secolo d.C. è stato ritrovato nei mari di Arzachena. Secondo una prima stima, fatta sulla base del peso complessivo del ritrovamento, il numero delle grandi monete di bronzo si aggirerebbe tra i 30.000 e i 50.000 esemplari. La scoperta è stata fatta da un cittadino privato durante un’immersione, quando ha notato dei resti metallici a bassa profondità, non lontano dalla riva.

The fragrances of Gallura turn into art

FABIO PETANI CI RACCONTA LA SUA OPERA SULLA SCALINATA DI SANTA LUCIA

The art installation on the Santa Lucia Steps, a consolidated tradition in the historic city centre of Arzachena, was unveiled in March. An artwork presented with an evocative title, Essenze di Gallura (Essences of Gallura), was designed by Fabio Petani as a tribute to the nature of the place and its native plants. The artist, originally from Piedmont, is one of Italy’s leading creators of urban art. We caught up with him in Sardinia to hear about his work, which will remain open to the public throughout 2024. Essenze di Gallura: what inspired this installation? What is the message you want to convey?

It was created to enhance the territory with my language, which has always been linked to botany and nature. I have narrated the essences of Gallura, which include rosemary, olive and myrtle, symbols of regeneration, peace and purity. They are the distinctive elements of this work, which also conveys a message of environmental protection and biodiversity, a statement against climate change. A call not only to Gallura but to Sardinia itself. How did you create the artwork? All the boards covering part of the Staircase were sanded down in a warehouse outside the city centre to bring out the wood, releasing it from several layers of coloured paint. We applied a coat of primer to prepare the wall, and I gave it a coat of water-based enamel. It was created in blocks by superimposing 6-7 steps at a time. We could say that I divided the staircase into sections, which, once assembled, create the effect of a single design, a sort of carpet accompanying the staircase. There are several elements on the way up. Indeed, on the right there is the silhouette of a rosemary, and at the top, near the Church of Santa Lucia, there is the olive tree, symbolising peace and recalling the fact that the artwork was installed a week before Easter.

Is there a common thread running through all your artwork?

Nature is always the founding element of all my artworks, and it changes according to the context. For example, I used myrtle because we are in Sardinia, as well as rosemary and olive trees for the reason I explained earlier. The narrative passes through plants, sometimes subtly and at other times more explicitly. Where can we see your artwork?

I have painted all over Europe and Italy. Perhaps I am missing two regions. I have been fortunate to travel a lot.

Svelata a marzo l’installazione artistica sulla Scalinata di Santa Lucia, tradizione consolidata del centro storico di Arzachena. Un’opera dal titolo evocativo, Essenze di Gallura, frmata da Fabio Petani come omaggio alla natura del luogo e alle piante autoctone. L’artista, piemontese di origine, è uno dei maggiori esponenti italiani di arte urbana. Lo abbiamo raggiunto in Sardegna per farci raccontare la sua opera, che rimarrà visitabile per tutto il 2024.

Essenze di Gallura: come è nata questa istallazione?

Qual è il messaggio che vuole tramettere?

Nasce per valorizzare il territorio

con il mio linguaggio, legato da sempre alla botanica, alla natura. Ho raccontato le essenze della Gallura: rosmarino, ulivo e mirto, simboli di rigenerazione, pace e purezza, sono gli elementi distintivi di quest’opera che vuole lanciare anche un messaggio di tutela dell’ambiente e della biodiversità contro i cambiamenti climatici. Un richiamo non solo alla Gallura ma alla Sardegna stessa. Come ha realizzato l’opera? Tutte le tavole che coprono parte della Scalinata sono state carteggiate in un magazzino fuori dal centro, per portarle di nuovo a legno vivo perché c’erano diversi strati di colore; abbiamo passato una mano di primer per preparare il muro e io ci ho lavorato sopra dandogli dello smalto ad acqua. L’ho realizzate a blocchi mettendo, ad esempio, sovrapposti 6-7 scalini per volta. È come se avessi diviso in sezioni questa scala, che poi una volta montata dà l’effetto di un disegno unico, una sorta di tappeto che accompagna questa scala. Salendo ci sono vari elementi: sulla destra c’è la sagoma di un rosmarino, e in alto nei pressi della Chiesa di Santa Lucia, c’è l’ulivo proprio anche per simboleggiare la pace e per richiamare il fatto che l’opera è stata installata una settimana prima di Pasqua. C’è un flo conduttore che accomuna tutto il suo lavoro?

All’interno delle mie opere c’è sempre la natura come elemento fondante, che cambia in base al contesto. Ad esempio, il mirto l’ho utilizzato perché siamo in Sardegna, così come il rosmarino e l’ulivo per il motivo che ho spiegato prima. È una narrazione che passa attraverso le piante, in maniera a volte velata e altre volte in maniera più esplicita.

Dove si possono vedere i suoi lavori?

Ho dipinto in tutta Europa e in tutta Italia, forse mi mancano due regioni. Ho avuto la fortuna di girare molto.

The Prince’s Beach

They say it was love at frst sight: for Prince Karim Aga Khan, considered the founding father of Costa Smeralda, his encounter with the beach of “Poltu di li cogghj” was probably the trigger for his decision to start building his dream in this corner of earthly heaven on the northeastern coast of Sardinia. In ancient times, boats laden with hides - “li cogghj” in the local Gallura language - are thought to have embarked from this lovely cove facing the island of Mortorio

And it was here, some 60 years ago, that the young Aga Khan’s splendid and fascinating project began. Having fallen head over heels in love with the beach, he decided to make this stretch of the Gallura coast his buen retiro for the years to come. Quando si dice che fu amore a prima vista: per il principe Karim Aga Khan, padre fondatore della Costa Smeralda, l’incontro con la spiaggia di “Poltu di li cogghj” fu quello forse decisivo per iniziare a costruire, in questo angolo di paradiso in terra nella costa nord orientale della Sardegna, il suo sogno. Da questa insenatura che si affaccia sull’isola di Mortorio, nell’antichità pare partissero le imbarcazioni cariche di pelli, “li cogghj” in lingua gallurese. E da qui prese il via il maestoso e affasciante progetto del giovane Aga Khan che, innamoratosi di questa spiaggia, decise che avrebbe reso questo tratto di costa della Gallura il suo buen retiro per gli anni a venire. La vista viene travolta dal colore candido della sabbia,  dall’azzurro dell’acqua così trasparente e limpida da pensare di poterla bere, e l’olfatto inebriato

This beach - which since Karim Aga Khan’s frst visit has been called the Spiaggia del Principe or Prince’s Beach in his honour - is one of the reasons why everyone should visit the north-eastern coast of Sardinia at least once in a lifetime.

A rough diamond today as in the past, the beach remains unaltered and protected, spared from the construction of businesses or villas in the immediate vicinity, so simple and at the same time unique that it leaves all who come here speechless, including the prince himself. To get there, you need to walk along what is effectively an ancient mule track, fanked by low shrubs twisted and sculpted by the Mistral wind.

After walking for ten minutes or so, you’re treated to a view the likes of which can be

Una ‘pietra preziosa grezza’ che, oggi come allora, è rimasta invariata e tutelata, preservata dalla costruzione nelle sue immediate vicinanze di strutture o ville, così unica e allo stesso tempo semplice da lasciare tutti senza parole, principe compreso. Per raggiungerla è necessario percorre un tratto di sentiero a piedi in quella che appare a tutti gli effetti una vecchia mulattiera, circondata da arbusti bassi e modellati dal vento di maestrale.

seen in very few places in the world. The sheltered cove and the shining sea invite visitors to dive into the water, which is extremely shallow near the shore and becomes gradually deeper. But the water is so clear that the seabed remains perfectly visible, even far away from the strand.

Although it’s extremely popular with tourists and holidaymakers in summer, low season is the best time to enjoy all the beauty of this stunning place. In spring, and also in autumn, the beach reclaims its own space and the rhythm of nature is restored, making this gorgeous cove even more spectacular. At this time of year, you might spot some of the wild animals that inhabit the beach when the tourists take their beach umbrellas and head home.

Nearby, just under two kilometres away, is the resort of Romazzino, and even closer is Cala di Volpe: two more jewels Costa Semeralda®.

Nei mesi primaverili e anche durante l’autunno, la spiaggia si riprende i suoi spazi e la natura ritrova il suo ritmo, rendendo questa caletta ancora più suggestiva; e così è possibile avvistare sulla spiaggia molti degli animali selvatici che la popolano quando i turisti ritornano a casa i propri ombrelloni.

Nelle sue vicinanze, a poco meno di due chilometri di distanza, si trova la località di Romazzino e prima ancora quella di Cala di Volpe, altri due gioielli Costa Smeralda®.

Protection of Biodiversity

Astructure protecting the dune area to prevent coastal erosion and preserve the dune’s environmental system, particularly the Capriccioli beach, one of Sardinia’s natural gems, on the island’s north-eastern coast. This is the scope of the One Ocean Foundation project approved by the Arzachena municipality. The nonproft foundation aims to enhance one of the island’s most popular and beloved coastal areas. Lightweight structures, made of natural materials such as wood or vegetable fbre, with minimal visual impact and totally recyclable, will be placed on the beach’s dunes. These protection works will be fanked by informative signage to raise awareness of both the resident population and tourists of taxes concerning dune ecosystems. “The protection and restoration of biodiversity, as also indicated by the European Union, is an essential part of One Ocean Foundation’s mission, which acknowledges the value of Sardinia’s territories on a national and international scale. Hence our commitment to safeguarding the dune habitats in the Arzachena area,” said Riccardo Bonadeo, President of One Ocean Foundation.

La Fondazione no proft ha lo scopo di valorizzare una delle aree costiere tra le più amate del Paese. Strutture leggere, materiali naturali come legno o fbre vegetali, dal minimo impatto visivo e interamente riciclabili, verranno sistemate sulle dune. E per sensibilitzzare residenti e turisti, queste opere saranno affancate da una cartellonistica informativa volta ad aumentare la consapevolezza sull’importanza degli ecosistemi dunali. “La tutela e il ripristino della biodiversità, così come indicato anche dall’Unione Europea, rappresentano un tassello fondamentale della mission di One Ocean Foundation, che riconosce l’importante valore dei territori della Sardegna su scala nazionale e internazionale. During the event the PCWFF Award is assigned following a tasting by experts. The categories will be: regional wines (red, white, rosé and sparkling) and national wines (red, white, rosé and sparkling). Award-winning wines receive the PCWFF Seal to be applied to all bottles. Not only that, wines awarded the PCWFF Seal, after receiving the PCWFF Award, will become part of the Taste of Sardinia, the initiative through which Marriott Costa Smeralda presents Italian excellence in the world.

FINE DINING IN AND AROUND PORTO CERVO IN SPRING

Immersed in the wildest and most uncontaminated nature of Gallura, just a few kilometres from the northeastern coast of the island and from renowned beaches and destinations, such as those in the Gulf of Porto Cervo, these rural holiday farms have preserved a clearly visible trace of the most remote culinary traditions in this corner of Sardinia, which is so close to the glamour of renowned and famous destinations. These apparently simple locations conceal painstaking refnement, not only in terms of food and raw materials brought to the table, but also for the furnishings that make up the restaurant. Hence, especially in spring, when Porto Cervo and its establishments are preparing to open in May, it is easy to lose oneself in a gastronomic tour of the site, savouring the traditional cuisine of Gallura a few kilometres inland, in the municipality of Arzachena. In some cases, it only takes a few minutes by car to reach restaurants such as La Colti, in Cannigione. Stepping through the heavy wooden door, which opens onto an inner courtyard, ‘colti’ in Gallura dialect, will immerse you in the typical atmosphere of an old Gallura farmhouse. Owned by the Filigheddu Serra family, ‘La Colti’ is a holiday farm, a way of life, a genuine experience. With its samplings of dishes made with farm produce or zero-kilometre products, the holiday farm will introduce you to the favours of an agropastoral past handed down to date, a few steps from the coast. Near Arzachena, in Candela, you will fnd the holiday farm ‘Candela’ named after the site.

Locali dall’aspetto semplice che nascondono però una ricercatezza certosina, non solo negli alimenti e materie prime che vengono in tavola, ma anche negli elementi di arredo che compongono il ristorante. Così è facile, soprattutto durante il periodo primaverile quando Porto Cervo e i suoi locali si preparano per le aperture nel mese di maggio, perdersi in un tour gastronomico nei pressi di questa località, assaporando cibi della tradizione gallurese e spingendosi qualche chilometro più nell’interno del comune di Arzachena. In alcuni casi bastano davvero pochi minuti di automobile per raggiungere posti come La Colti, a Cannigione. Varcare il portone di legno pesante che si apre su di un cortile interno, una ‘colti’ in dialetto gallurese, vi farà immergere nell’atmosfera tipica di un vecchio stazzo della Gallura. Di proprietà della famiglia Filigheddu Serra, La Colti è una fattoria, un agriturismo, uno stile di vita, una vera esperienza. Con i suoi assaggi di pietanze realizzate con prodotti dell’azienda o a chilometro zero, l’agriturismo vi farà scoprire i gusti appartenenti ad un passato agropastorale che, a pochi passi dalla Costa, continuano ad essere tramandati. Sempre nei pressi di Arzachena, in località Candela, c’è l’agriturismo che da questo luogo prende proprio il nome, Candela. You have only to leave the coastline behind for a few hours to fully experience the feelings the Gallura region offers with its food.

Ottimo punto di riferimento per chi vuole mangiare carne sarde dalla tracciabilità certifcata, qui viene servito anche il pesce pescato nella costa, con una selezione di crudi di mare che racchiude tutti i sapori di queste acque cristalline. Basta semplicemente lasciarsi la Costa alle spalle per alcune ore per vivere appieno le emozioni che il territorio gallurese riesce a donare, anche attraverso i suoi cibi.
