When did you develop a passion for the audio console and how did you enter the DJ set world? It all began in 2014, when I became attracted to the job by watching a DJ I was close to working. He taught me the basics for fun and as I slowly ventured into his world, my initial curiosity developed into a fullyfledged passion that brought me to practice every day as a self-taught DJ and test myself at clubs in Romagna. After two years of performing DJ sets as a hobby, I started seeing the first results, and I ventured outside of my comfort zone and performed in Tuscany, Marche and Puglia. So what had started as a pastime morphed into a real job. How long have you been working as resident DJ at Samsara and how did you land the job? In 2018, David Cicchella contacted me asking if I was interested in working at the Samsara in Gallipoli, and the following year I moved back to Romagna again to perform at the Samsara club in Riccione. I worked at the Samsara on the Riviera throughout the 2019 summer season and over the two very challenging years that followed, when we could only entertain a seated audience. 2022 is going to be my fifth season at the club. What are your best moments and memories associated with your DJ job in Riccione? Definitely my first Pink Night, the Riviera’s and Riccione’s most spectacular event of the season. There were lots of people, I was literally surrounded, it was so exciting and wonderful to see so many happy people around me dancing and having fun to my music.

Quando è iniziata la tua passione per la consolle e come sei entrata sulla scena dei DJ set? Tutto inizia nel 2014 quando mi sono incuriosita alla professione vedendo lavorare un DJ a cui ero vicina. Ha iniziato a insegnarmi le basi per gioco e man mano che mi addentravo in questo mondo, quella che era solo una curiosità si è trasformata in una passione che mi ha portato a fare pratica tutti i giorni come autodidatta e mettermi alla prova nei locali della Romagna. Passati i primi due anni in cui facevo dj set per hobby, ho iniziato a vedere i risultati, uscendo dalle mie zone abituali e andando a suonare in Toscana, Marche e Puglia. In questo modo quello che era iniziato come passatempo è diventato la mia prima professione. Da quanto tempo sei Dj resident al Samsara e come ti sei avvicinata a questo posto? Nel 2018 sono stata contattata da David Cicchella per lavorare al Samsara di Gallipoli e l’anno successivo mi sono trasferita di nuovo in Romagna per suonare nel locale di Riccione. Ho lavorato al Samsara della riviera nella stagione estiva del 2019 e nei due anni particolari che sono seguiti, in cui si poteva fare intrattenimento con il pubblico a sedere. Questa del 2022 sarà la mia quinta stagione. Quali sono i momenti e ricordi più belli legati al tuo lavoro di Dj a Riccione? Sicuramente la mia prima notte rosa, l’evento principe di tutta la riviera, di cui Riccione è uno dei grandi protagonisti. C’era tantissima gente, ero circondata, è stata un’emozione e una gioia grandissima vedere intorno a me così tante persone che si divertivano seguendo il mio ritmo.

Carbonara is usually associated with Roman cuisine, and instead we learn that its origins are traced to Riccione: what is its history? The origins of carbonara are commemorated every year here in Riccione at the Venti di Guerra e Carbonara event, organized by the Adriatic Veterans Car Club, the Automotoclub Storico Italiano and the Grand Hotel Des Bains on the anniversary of the Allied breach of the Gothic Line, when Generals Leese, Clark and Alexander of the Allies’ 5th and 8th armies celebrated the victory with a dinner party prepared by the chef from Bologna Renato Gualandi by using the ingredients provided by the Generals. The celebration is a lovely event, which begins with the parade of military vehicles of World War Two along Viale Gramsci and Viale Ceccarini and ends with a competition between chefs who prepare each their own version of this great Italian dish. The 2022 event will be held on 11 September. How did you win last’s year competition? I prepared the original Riccione recipe for this dish, by using milk ( which was powdered milk in the original recipe), bacon, Parmesan cheese and egg yolk and black pepper sprinkled over the dish. Black pepper gave the name ‘ carbonara’ to the dish because it recalled black charcoal powder. What are the secrets of your cuisine? I am of Argentinian origin, but I am ‘Romagnola’ by heart: I have worked all over the world, including France and the United States, but I have always felt a very close bond with Romagna. I have no secrets, but I do have one guiding principle: an international vision and a local soul.

Di solito associamo la carbonara alla cucina romana, e invece scopriamo che ha origini proprio a Riccione: qual è la sua storia? Le origini della carbonara vengono ricordate ogni anno qui a Riccione dalla rievocazione Venti di Guerra e Carbonara, organizzata dall’Adriatic Veterans Car Club, l’Automotoclub Storico Italiano e il Grand Hotel Des Bains nell’anniversario dello sfondamento della Linea Gotica, quando i generali Leese, Clark e Alexander della V e VIII armata anglo-americana decisero di organizzare la cena della vittoria, passando al grande cuoco bolognese Renato Gualandi i prodotti che portavano con sé. La rievocazione è una bella giornata che comincia con una sfilata di automezzi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in viale Gramsci e viale Ceccarini e si conclude con una sfida tra chef che propongono la propria versione di questo grande piatto della cucina italiana. L’edizione 2022 è in programma per l’11 settembre. Con quale ricetta ha vinto la scorsa edizione? Ho scelto di riproporre la ricetta originale dei natali riccionesi, usando latte (che nella ricetta originale era in polvere), bacon, parmigiano e tuorlo d’uovo. Per finire la guarnizione di pepe nero, che dette il nome ‘carbonara’ alla ricetta, proprio per il rimando alla polvere di carbone. Quali sono i suoi segreti in cucina? Le mie origini sono argentine e il mio cuore è romagnolo: nella mia storia professionale ho lavorato in tutto il mondo, con esperienze in Francia e negli Stati Uniti, ma sono sempre rimasta molto legata al territorio della Romagna. Non ho segreti, ma un principio guida sì: uno sguardo internazionale e un’anima locale.

What does the Marano Beach, which you run with your wife Cinzia and daughter Francesca, mean to tourists and locals? We are a symbol, innovators but also deeply rooted in the local hospitality tradition. We were the first to offer a lot of services and focus on the lifeguard’s role. Which is the reason why we are- I am- so often in the spotlight. We have an innovative spirit and we are strategically located: we are just a few meters away from the Beach Village with its pools and water slides, but also from the discos. So we have two different target markets: the 135 is the children’s beach, with pools, games and entertainment; the 136 is for young people drinking and having fun. It’s a cycle: the young people who now go clubbing will come back years later with their children, and today’s children will move on, one day, to the adults’ beach. For you, being a lifeguard is a family tradition. How has this figure changed from the sixties to today? The lifeguard adapts to society’s changes. Once tourists would go on vacation for one month and just relax in the sun. Today they stay for a few days only and are very dynamic, they plays sports, they want to be entertained, they gather at the beach at aperitivo time. The lifeguard has to meet all these new customer needs. We have to update our services, but also invest in human resources, such as tourist entertainers and babysitters. And the future? We are just emerging from two difficult years, but we’re not afraid of anything. We overcame global crises and difficulties, we kept on working and now we are ready. An image that best describes Riccione’s lifeguards. We are like the piadina: versatile, simple, for all palates. And true-born Romagna people.

Cosa rappresenta Marano Beach, che lei gestisce con sua moglie Cinzia e sua figlia Francesca, per i turisti e gli abitanti? Siamo un simbolo, innovatori ma radicati nella tradizione ospitale del territorio. Siamo stati i primi a proporre molti servizi e a puntare su un immaginario incentrato sul ruolo del bagnino. Per questo motivo siamo – e sono – così spesso sotto i riflettori. Ci caratterizziamo per lo spirito innovativo, con servizi legati alla nostra posizione: siamo a pochi metri dal Beach Village, con scivoli e piscine, ma anche dalle discoteche. Quindi abbiamo due target differenziati: Il 135 è la Spiaggia dei bambini allegri, con piscine, giochi e animazioni, il 136 appartiene ai giovani, agli aperitivi e al divertimento. È un ciclo: i ragazzi che frequentano i locali tornano anni dopo con la famiglia, e i bimbi di oggi si sposteranno, un giorno, nell’area dei grandi. Quella del bagnino è per lei una tradizione di famiglia. Come è cambiato dagli anni ’60 ad oggi questa figura? Il bagnino asseconda i cambiamenti della società. Una volta le villeggiature duravano anche un mese, e i turisti si limitavano a stazionare sotto l’ombrellone. Ora si fermano pochi giorni, ma sono molto dinamici, fanno sport, cercano intrattenimento, si ritrovano in spiaggia per il rito dell’aperitivo. Il bagnino gestisce tutte queste nuove esigenze. Occorre rinnovare i servizi, certo, ma anche investire sull’elemento umano, come abbiamo fatto noi con gli animatori e la tata. E il futuro? Veniamo da due anni difficili, ma nulla ci spaventa. Abbiamo superato crisi e difficoltà globali, ne siamo usciti lavorando, siamo pronti. Un’immagine per descrivere i bagnini di Riccione. Siamo come la piadina: versatili, semplici, per tutti i palati. E romagnoli Doc.

Why did you jump into this new venture, after the closing down of the historic Brasserie? I love challenges. There are plenty of pastry shops in Riccione, but they are all traditional style. Ours is a Frenchinspired shop with quality products. We are currently an all-female team. We make panettone and colomba cakes, Easter eggs, small patisserie, cakes and mini-cakes, and we have started making savory bakery products too, bread and focaccia bread. What about your relationship with the locals? After 31 years working at the Brasserie, I’ve made many friends who followed me all the way here too. We serve breakfast and American-style coffee in place of espressodespite our customers’ initial doubts- and we created a new habit here in Riccione. Word-of-mouth advertising and social media are helpful and being already a name in this business made launching myself into a new venture easier. Your shop is very well-known, but what has changed around you in the past few years? Food and beverage businesses are increasingly expanding in our area. Other facilities are opening just next door, mostly by young people, which is very important. It’s their time to shine. Plans for the future? This year, we will be moving Sac à Poche to the Brasserie’s former premises, just a few meters away from here: we will have a larger space for our business. Our location, slightly off Viale Ceccherini, is perfect, I love that customers come looking for us. We offer a pleasant, neat, welcoming and inviting atmosphere. After all, people eat with their eyes first.

Come è nata questa nuova avventura, dopo la chiusura della storica Brasserie? Adoro le sfide. A Riccione ci sono altre pasticcerie, ma sono di stile tradizionale. Questo è un angolo di ispirazione francese con prodotti di qualità. In questo momento siamo un team di sole donne. Prepariamo panettoni, colombe, uova di Pasqua, creiamo piccola pasticceria, torte e monoporzioni, e da poco ci occupiamo anche del salato, pane e focacce. Il rapporto con Riccione e i riccionesi? A 31 anni dalla nascita della Brasserie si sono create tante belle amicizie, che mi hanno seguita anche qui. Puntiamo molto sulle colazioni, e servendo il caffè americano al posto dell’espresso - superando la perplessità iniziale dei clienti - abbiamo creato una nuova abitudine a Riccione. Il passaparola e i social aiutano, essere molto nota mi ha facilitata in questa nuova impresa. Siete un punto di riferimento fisso. Cos’è cambiato intorno a voi, in questi anni? La zona in cui ci troviamo si sta specializzando nella gastronomia. Proprio accanto si stanno aggiungendo altri locali, c’è movimento: sono soprattutto i giovani ad aprire nuove attività, ed è molto importante. È il loro momento. Progetti per il futuro? Quest’anno sposteremo Sac à Poche dove c’era la Brasserie, a pochi metri da qui: avremo più spazio per il nostro progetto. La nostra posizione, appena decentrata rispetto a viale Ceccherini, è perfetta, mi piace l’idea che i clienti ci vengano a cercare. Offriamo un’atmosfera piacevole, curata, accogliente, che invita ad entrare. In fondo prima di tutto si mangia con gli occhi.

Your birthplace is always a special place, even more so when it is where your career began. That’s how it was for Stefano Accorsi, star of stage, screen – both silver and small - and iconic ads, but also director and scriptwriter. It all began the summer he spent as a lifeguard on the beaches of his beloved Emilia-Romagna. The start of a career, during which even when he became internationally known, he has always maintained his strong ties with his roots. Not only because of some all-important milestones - it was here that the Maxibon TV ad, which made him a familiar face all over Italy, was set, and the movies Radiofreccia and Italian Race were shot, for both of which he won the David di Donatello Award for Best Actor - but especially because “the place you come from is a way of seeing the world that you always carry with you.” A love for his Emilia-Romagna that has led him to become spokesman for a project to promote and enhance the image of the Region. Since 2021 you have been a spokesman for EmiliaRomagna. What does it mean to represent your region? First of all, it’s a privilege, and not only because it is a place I love deeply, but also because thanks to this experience, I’m discovering places and stories that otherwise I would never have known. The challenge and the other privilege is being able to tell about them with a project of this calibre about ten videos and more than 20 posts a year for 3 years, a documentary, in addition to other content created with a team of great professionals. What are your favourite places in the Regione? Bologna, my hometown, that longitude and latitude that when you are there you perceive something different and special. But I love all the surrounding countryside very much. Both that around Bologna and around Reggio Emilia, where I shot Radiofreccia and Made in Italy with Luciano Ligabue. That flat countryside, with rows of poplars, birches, the river Po… that is My Land. Do you often go to Riccione? I’ve been there several times for theatre tours, at Spazio Tondelli, and it was always a pleasure to go there, even if it

E non solo perché è una terra che amo profondamente, ma anche perché io per primo, grazie a questa esperienza, sto scoprendo luoghi e storie che altrimenti non avrei mai potuto conoscere. La sfida e l’atro privilegio, è poterla raccontare con un progetto di questo spessore: circa dieci video e più di 20 post all’anno per 3 anni, un documentario, oltre ad altri contenuti realizzati con un team di grandi professionisti. I tuoi posti del cuore della Regione? Bologna, la mia città natale, quella longitudine e latitudine che quando ci sei percepisci qualcosa di diverso e speciale. Ma amo molto tutta la campagna circostante. Sia quella intorno Bologna, che quella intorno Reggio Emilia, dove con Luciano (Ligabue, ndr) ho girato Radiofreccia e Made in Italy. usually happens out of season, at least as far as the seaside is concerned. The coast has a special place in your life. You were a lifeguard when you first auditioned as an actor for Pupi Avati’s Brothers and Sisters. It was a kind of early start. It was summer and I was going to start acting school in the autumn, when I learned that Pupi Avati was looking for actors, or non-actors, for his next film. I immediately went to a local photographer, thinking I would come out with Paul Newman-style photos, when they were actually horrendous (laughs, ed). I went to the audition anyway, convinced that it would only be Pupi Avati and me - just to give an idea of how much I knew about the environment - instead, not only was Pupi Avati not there, but there were at least 500 other boys. They called me for a second audition, where I finally met Pupi Avati and immediately realized that it was precisely the fact that I was a lifeguard, with all the associated clichés (first of all, success with girls), that had intrigued him. It wasn’t really true, but I decided to go along with it. I remember that as soon as I left I felt uncomfortable, because my first thought was that I had lied, but actually, it wasn’t like that I had started acting. A third audition followed and then the phone call where he asked me to go to the United States with him for two months to shoot the film. This and other stories are told in your first biographical book, Album Stefano Accorsi. What prompted you to retrace your life and career, and what was it like doing it? This book was a surprise. It started out as a work made up of some backstage photos and a few interesting anecdotes.

Andai comunque al provino, convinto che saremmo stati solo Pupi Avati e io - giusto per dare un’idea di quanto conoscessi l’ambiente… - invece, non solo Pupi Avati non c’era, ma c’erano almeno 500 ragazzi. Mi chiamarono per un secondo provino, dove finalmente incontrai Pupi Avati e subito capii che era proprio il fatto che facessi il bagnino, con tutti i luoghi comuni annessi (in primis il successo con le ragazze), che lo aveva incuriosito. Non era la mia realtà, ma decisi di assecondarlo. Ricordo che appena uscito mi sentivo a disagio, perché il primo pensiero fu quello di aver mentito, ma in realtà no, non era così: avevo cominciato a recitare. Seguì un terzo provino e poi la telefonata dove mi chiedeva di andar con lui per due mesi negli Stati Uniti, a girare il film. Questa e altre storie sono raccontate nel tuo primo libro biografico, Album Stefano Accorsi. Cosa ti ha spinto a ripercorrere la tua vita e carriera, e come è stato farlo? RICCIONE IS A PLACE WHERE UNDERSTATEMENT IS THE WATCHWORD RICCIONE È UN LUOGO DOVE L’UNDERSTATEMENT LA FA DA PADRONE Do you remember - not without a touch of melancholy - the Rosa d’Inverno ball at the Savioli, the convertibles speeding down Viale Ceccarini, the men in white blazers and the women in gorgeous clothes, hair and make-up? In other words, the city of the beautiful and famous, way before Instagram and influencers? Well, forget all that. Riccione today - except for the quick-getaway weekend visitors - is a place where understatement is the watchword, and it’s no accident that the most common comment from the thousands of tourists who come here is “No, I don’t go to trendy places, I just go where the locals hang out…”. In other words, the 34,000 fortunate souls who live here all year round. And this means, in random order: leaving the car in the garage and getting around by bicycle, even when you’re going for dinner in a neighbouring town such as Misano or Miramare; dressing with meticulous care (and how!) but always giving the impression you’ve thrown on the first thing you found in the wardrobe; showing pride only and exclusively in the bargain dress you got at the local market and never - ever - in the high-end designer item from the boutique. It means queueing for half an hour without complaint for a piadina at Romano in Viale Gramsci or Katia on the promenade; bumping into each other at Conad or the Abissinia supermarket and organising evenings at the home of someone or another, where everyone brings something. But let’s go back to the Friday market in Riccione Paese: it’s the ultimate must. Here you’ll find everything from clothing (with several discount stalls where you might find that unmissable item you couldn’t get hold of over the winter) to food, from household goods (gorgeous tablecloths) to fresh flowers. But to really feel like local, you have to buy porchetta for lunch - despite the 40-degree heat. There are three stalls selling it, and they’re all excellent. On the subject of markets, if you really can’t do without locally-produced fruit and vegetables and traditional products, there’s the Tuesday organic street market in Viale Ceccarini alta, surrounded by an adventure park that’s a joy for kids… and for their parents, who can enjoy a pizza from Da quei matti: huge tables and incredible blowout food. Riccione oggi, almeno per chi non la vive per un week end mordi-e-fuggi, è un luogo dove l’understatement la fa da padrone e non a caso la frase più ricorrente fra le migliaia di turisti che la popolano è: “No, io non vado nei posti di moda, vado solo in quelli che frequentano i riccionesi…”. Cioè quelle 34 mila persone felici che la loro città se la vivono tutto l’anno. Il che significa, in ordine sparso: lasciare sempre l’auto in garage e muoversi rigorosamente in bicicletta anche quando si va a cena nei paesi vicini, tipo Misano o Miramare; curare l’abbigliamento (eccome!) ma avere sempre l’aria di chi si è messo la prima cosa che ha trovato nell’armadio; mostrarsi fieri solo ed esclusivamente del vestito super bazza acquistato al mercato in paese e mai - assolutamente mai del capo firmatissimo comprato in boutique. Vuol dire fare mezz’ora di fila senza lamentarsi per una piadina da Romano in viale Gramsci o dalla Katia sul lungomare, incontrarsi alla Conad o al supermarket Abissinia, organizzare serate a casa dell’uno o dell’altro dove tutti portano qualcosa. Ma torniamo al Mercato del venerdì a Riccione paese, un must che più must non si può. Ci si trova di tutto, dall’abbigliamento (con alcune bancarelle di stock che ti fanno trovare il capo imperdibile che ti era sfuggito durante l’inverno), al cibo, dagli oggetti per la casa (bellissime le tovaglie) ai fiori freschi. BIKE ITINERARY

OUT-OF-TOWN TRIPS TO DISCOVER THE WONDERS NEAR RICCIONE GITE FUORI PORTA PER SCOPRIRE LE MERAVIGLIE VICINO RICCIONE Riccione can take all the credit for being a popular cyclist destination. Stefano Giuliodori, in fact, started promoting the Bike Hotels formula back in 1997 and kept going since then. The co-owner of Dory Hotel takes us on a tour of Riccione’s gems, both visual and verbal. Our bicycle ride- imaginary for the time being- starts in downtown Riccione. We will be travelling easy-riding asphalt roads, suitable for all kinds of bicycles, along medium to easy routes. The ideal period: all year long but, in particular, from mid-March to late October. THE EASIEST LOOP: THE OLD MEDIEVAL VILLAGES 72 km, 1,183 meters of difference in height. Departure: 9 am, arrival: 2 pm (or 3 pm, depending on breaks). From Riccione we proceed towards Cattolica, travelling along the coast, and then we turn to the right to reach San Giovanni in Marignano. Here we go in search of nice views worth photographing: we are at the age-old granary of the Malatesta family, a fortified village. On the sides of the main road we notice some odd manholes: they are the so-called wheat ditches, numbered and dating back to the Middle Ages, where the crop was stored. We go on to Monteluro, cycling uphill, and we reach Talacchio, where we refill our water-bottle at the fountain. We cycle in the direction of San Giorgio, with ups and downs amidst nature, olive trees and vineyards. We finally arrive at Mondaino, at a height of 400 meters. We admire the nineteenth-century Piazza- unique of its kind, it is round-shaped- and we stop for a cup of coffee. We are ahead of schedule, so we visit Porta di Sotto. Here the wheat ditches are filled up, in August, with canvas bags full of sheep milk’s cheese and sealed up with lime until November. A ritual which gives shape and flavor to the famous formaggio di fossa. We make some room in our backpack to take it home with us. We get back on the road and, after some more ups and downs, we reach Saludecio, with its castle. We make a short stop to visit the nearby church which houses the grave of Beato Amato, a figure associated with miracle stories. After a coffee break on the main square, we put on our windbreaker and we go full speed downhill

Se Riccione è una meta molto apprezzata dai ciclisti è anche merito suo. Stefano Giuliodori ha iniziato nel lontano 1997 a promuovere la formula dei Bike Hotels, e non si è più fermato. Il co-titolare e titolare del Dory Hotel ci accompagna oggi in un tour fatto di immagini e parole, tra le perle del riccionese. La nostra pedalata - per ora - immaginaria inizia proprio in città. Circoleremo su strade asfaltate, adatte ad ogni tipo di bicicletta, lungo itinerari medio-facili. Periodo ideale: tutto l’anno, ma in particolare da metà marzo a fine ottobre. ANELLO PIÙ SEMPLICE: GLI ANTICHI BORGHI MEDIEVALI 72 km, 1183 metri di dislivello. Partenza: h 9, arrivo, h 14 (o h 15, a seconda delle pause). Da Riccione ci dirigiamo verso Cattolica, seguendo la costa, e poi pieghiamo a destra per giungere a San Giovanni in Marignano. Qui andiamo a caccia di scorci da fotografare: siamo nell’antico granaio della famiglia Malatesta, un borgo fortificato. Ai lati della strada principale troviamo strani tombini: sono le ‘fosse da grano’ medievali, numerate, dove si conservava il raccolto. Proseguiamo per Monteluro, affrontiamo una salita e arriviamo a Talacchio, dove riempiamo la borraccia alla fontana. Pedaliamo in direzione San Giorgio, tra saliscendi in mezzo alla natura, olivi e vigne. Finalmente siamo a Mondaino, a 400 metri di altitudine. Ammiriamo la piazza ottocentesca - unica nel suo genere, è rotonda - e ci fermiamo per un caffè. Abbiamo ancora tempo, e visitiamo la Porta di Sotto. Qui le antiche fosse per il grano vengono riempite, in agosto, di sacchi di tela pieni di formaggio di pecora, e poi sigillate con la calce fino a novembre. Un rito che dà forma e sapore al famoso formaggio di fossa. Troviamo posto nello zaino per portarcene un po’ a casa. Riprendiamo il viaggio, dopo altri saliscendi siamo a Saludecio, con il suo castello. Facciamo una breve tappa nella chiesa adiacente, che custodisce la tomba del Beato Amato, una figura legata a storie e miracoli. Dopo un caffè nella piazza centrale indossiamo la mantellina antivento e voliamo in discesa fino a Croce. Seguiamo le indicazioni per Coriano, e passato

to Croce. We follow the road signs for Coriano and, as we go past San Savino, we notice the sign for Tenuta Santini. Here we are greeted by Sandro, a genuine ‘Romagnolo’, loaded with bottles of Sangiovese and Rebola wine to be enjoyed in the garden while taking in the view of San Marino and Mount Titano. We make some purchases and, with a heavier backpack and a lighter mind, we are on our bicycles again heading back to Riccione to close the loop. THE MORE CHALLENGING LOOP: FORTRESSES, CASTELS AND LEGENDS 77 km, 1,353 meters of difference in height. Departure: 9 am, arrival: 2.30 pm (or 3.30 pm, depending on breaks) This tour starts like the previous one, departing from Riccione and arriving at San Giovanni in Marignano. From here we take a different route. It is worth the effort to soak up some more of the area’s incredible scenery. With San Giovanni in Marignano behind us, we head towards Montegridolfo and its lovely castle. We get lost in the maze of narrow medieval streets which have been very accurately restored. The village is a true gem. We refill our water-bottle to tackle the uphill climb with 400 meters of difference in height. All around, vineyards and olive trees as far as the eye can see. We are in Mondaino. We take pictures and visit Porta di Sotto, the home of ‘Fossa’ cheese. We are back on our bicycles heading to Tavoleto, stopping along the road to

Ci perdiamo nel dedalo di stradine medievali ristrutturate con grande cura. È un gioiello. Riempiamo la borraccia per affrontare la salita di 400 metri di dislivello. Tutto intorno, vigneti e olivi a perdita d’occhio. Eccoci a Mondaino. Scattiamo foto e visitiamo la Porta di Sotto, casa del formaggio di Fossa. Rimontiamo in bici in direzione Tavoleto, fermandoci lungo la strada per fotografare il suo torrione. Percorriamo un lungo viale alberato e ombreggiato e raggiungiamo Montefiore Conca. PAOLO AND FRANCESCA: BEAUTIFUL AND MELANCHOLY, IN THE FIRST FLUSH OF YOUTH YET ETERNAL PAOLO E FRANCESCA: BELLI ALMENO QUANTO TRISTI, GIOVANISSIMI E ALLO STESSO TEMPO ETERNI History’s most heart-rending love story has a name - two, actually - and an address. Everyone knows Paolo and Francesca: beautiful and melancholy, in the first flush of youth yet eternal, tormented yet also carefree and passionate, as only youth can be. They were immortalised by Dante, whose verses are all too often quoted but still a pleasure to hear: “Love, that exempts no one beloved from loving, Seized me with pleasure of this man so strongly, That, as thou seest, it doth not yet desert me. Love has conducted us unto one death; Caina waiteth him who quenched our life!” Canto V is a beautiful section whose powerful and moving brushstrokes tell a story that feels like a period drama set in the magnificent Gradara Castle, in a small town near the sea on the border of Emilia-Romagna and the Marche. So let’s explore the story, with our eyes on the castle and Dante’s verses in our ears. The affair of the lovers of Gradara must have been widely discussed, and Dante would have learned the details from Francesca’s older brother Bernardino da Polenta, with whom he fought in the Battle of Campaldino against Arezzo in 1289, a few years after Paolo and Francesca’s deaths. Dante does not hesitate to place the lovers in Hell, but nonetheless they arouse in him a deep feeling of empathy and identification which has no equal in the rest of the poem. At the end of the tale he faints, “And fell, even as a dead body falls”. Legend has it that Francesca da Polenta, the daughter of Guido da Polenta, lord of Ravenna, was married for political reasons to the condottiero Gianciotto Malatesta, son of Malatesta da Verucchio, who would later become lord of Rimini. But Francesca fell in love - reciprocated - with her brotherin-law Paolo Malatesta, Gianciotto’s brother. Paolo and Francesca would ultimately be discovered and killed by the betrayed husband. Where did all this happen? We don’t know, and Dante doesn’t tell us. But at some point in history the story became linked to Gradara, which since then has been inextricably connected to Paolo and Francesca. It appears that it was here, at the castle which, apart from anything else, belonged to the Malatesta family - that the two met, spent time together and became lovers, until the tragic dénouement. And over

L’amore più struggente della storia ha un volto, anzi due, e un indirizzo. Paolo e Francesca li conosciamo tutti: belli almeno quanto tristi, giovanissimi e allo stesso tempo eterni, tormentati ma anche leggeri e appassionati, come solo i ragazzi possono essere. Li ha resi immortali Dante, che ha scritto per loro versi citati fin troppo spesso ma che è sempre un piacere sentire: “Amor, ch’a nullo amato amar perdona, mi prese del costui piacer sì forte, che, come vedi, ancor non m’abbandona. Amor condusse noi ad una morte. Caina attende chi a vita ci spense”. Un cantico bellissimo il V, che narra con pennellate potenti e emozionanti una storia che ci scorre di fronte come un film in costume, ambientato nella stupenda Rocca di Gradara, in un piccolo comune vicino al mare al confine tra Emilia-Romagna e Marche. Ripercorriamo allora questa storia con la Rocca negli occhi e i versi di Dante a accompagnarci. La vicenda degli amanti di Gradara doveva essere stata sulla bocca di tutti, e i dettagli probabilmente Dante li aveva appresi da Bernardino da Polenta, fratello maggiore di Francesca, con il quale aveva combattuto nel 1289 contro gli Aretini nella battaglia di Campaldino, pochi anni dopo la morte di Paolo e Francesca. Dante non esita a collocarli all’Inferno, ma ugualmente la coppia muove in lui un sentimento di commozione e immedesimazione che non ha uguali nel resto del poema. Alla fine del racconto sviene “E caddi come corpo morto cade”. La tradizione vuole che Francesca da Polenta, figlia di Guido da Polenta signore di Ravenna, fosse stata fatta sposare per ragioni di alleanze dinastiche con il condottiero Gianciotto Malatesta, figlio di Malatesta da Verucchio, che sarebbe diventato poi signore di Rimini. Francesca però si innamora, corrisposta, del cognato Paolo Malatesta, uno dei fratelli di Gianciotto. Paolo e Francesca, alla fine, sarebbero stati sorpresi e uccisi dal marito tradito. Dove? Non si sa, e neppure Dante lo dice. Ma a un certo punto si è iniziato a collocare la vicenda a Gradara, che da allora è indissolubilmente legata a Paolo e Francesca. RICCIONE PERFORMED OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF MUNICIPAL AUTONOMY RICCIONE COMPIE I SUOI CENT’ANNI DI AUTONOMIA COMUNALE From a small sea village to world-famous seaside destination. It’s the miracle that Riccione performed over one hundred years of municipal autonomy, by overcoming the toughest challenges with determination and great entrepreneurial spirit. Success and popularity are rooted in the spirit of the locals who are constantly striving to be at the top of their game, by offering services and warm hospitality, but also by launching new forms of entertainment and new trends. THE DAWN OF MUNICIPAL AUTONOMY In 1919, the relevant Ministry was sent a formal request for the granting of municipal autonomy to the towns of Riccione and San Lorenzo, which wanted to separate from Rimini. The dream came true on October 19, 1922, after an insurrection broke out. On March 1, 1923, the Green Pearl of the Adriatic Sea, where the first villas of aristocrats, doctors, lawyers and big well-known land-owners from Northern Italy had been already built, saw its land boundaries finally recognized by a royal decree signed by King Vittorio Emanuele III and Benito Mussolini. That year the town had a population of 5,500 people and 13 hotels. THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT URBAN SPRAWL Riccione became increasingly popular. Among its illustrious guests were the Mussolini family members who spent their holidays firstly at Villa Terzi, then at Hotel Lido (the current Mediterraneo) and finally at Milano Helvetia, until Donna Rachele purchased the villa that became their summer residence and which from 2008 houses major events. Riccione was on everyone’s lips and more and more popular as a holiday destination. In 1926, the town was recognized as ‘Stazione di cura e soggiorno’ (health and summer resort). Cheerfulness and light-heartedness were the key features of the Green Pearl in the 1930s and the town continued to grow by focusing on entertainment and sports. Services, hospitality and an abundance of green spaces, which gained it the nickname of “ garden-city”, were the town’s main attractions. Summer nights were crowded with vacationers who gathered at the cafés, terraces and gardens where they danced to music played by light orchestras. Viale Ceccherini was the main strolling street and, on the eve of World War Two, artists and sports champions arrived too. THE POSTWAR REBIRTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE FOLLOWING DECADES Riccione had been left prostrate by the war, but it did not give up. The local residents rebuilt the town and got the “tourism machine” back to full functioning, thus, throwing the doors

L’ALBA DELL’AUTONOMIA COMUNALE È il 1919 e al Ministero competente viene inoltrata formale richiesta di autonomia comunale per le frazioni di Riccione e San Lorenzo, che vogliono staccarsi da Rimini. Il sogno si avvera il 19 ottobre 1922, dopo una significativa insurrezione. La Perla Verde dell’Adriatico, che al mare aveva già visto sorgere i primi villini di conti, marchesi, medici, avvocati e noti latifondisti del nord, il primo marzo 1923 vede finalmente delimitare il suo territorio con Regio Decreto firmato da Vittorio Emanuele III e Benito Mussolini. In quell’anno si contano 5.500 abitanti e 13 alberghi. LA PRIMA SIGNIFICATIVA ESPANSIONE Riccione prende sempre più quota, tra i suoi illustri ospiti annovera la famiglia Mussolini che dal 1926 trascorre le vacanze prima a Villa Terzi, poi all’Hotel Lido (ora Mediterraneo), quindi al Milano Helvetia, finché per le vacanze estive Donna Rachele acquista la villa, che dal 2008, anno della ristrutturazione, è sede di grandi eventi. Riccione fa parlare l’intera Italia e la vocazione turistica è sempre più consolidata. Nel 1926 la cittadina viene riconosciuta ‘Stazione di cura e soggiorno’. Allegria e spensieratezza sono le peculiarità della Perla Verde già dagli anni Trenta e la città vuole crescere a 360 gradi, così punta pure su spettacoli e sport. Si esaltano servizi, ospitalità e quell’abbondanza di verde che ha fruttato l’appellativo di ‘città giardino’. Anche la notte d’estate acquista sempre più fascino con i villeggianti che affollano i caffè, terrazze e giardini dove si balla sulle note delle orchestrine. Viale Ceccarini è già via dello struscio e nei locali alla vigilia del grande conflitto bellico arrivano artisti e campioni sportivi. LA RINASCITA POSTBELLICA E LO SVILUPPO DEI SUCCESSIVI DECENNI Riccione esce prostrata dalla guerra, ma non si arrende. I suoi abitanti ricostruiscono la città e rimettono in moto la macchina di quel turismo che spalancherà le porte alla grande massa del popolo vacanziero. Il flusso di ospiti è tale che le pensioni non bastano più, si

The small villas were demolished to make room for large hotels. In the late 1970s, when the bikini became a popular piece on the beach, the number of hotels had risen to over 750. Dancing and music resumed at the Notturno Savioli and Zanarini. The curtains of the legendary Villa Alta, Vallechiara, Florida and Metropol rose. At the crossroads of different cultures, Riccione launched new trends: sunbeds with sunroofs, Gher’s fish kebabs and Liliana hats. The 1960s were the years of “national-popular” tourism, with a steady line of cars on the A14 highway heading to the Riviera. There was also a boom of German, French and Scandinavian tourists. Lambrette, Cabriolet and Spider cars became status symbols which, along with tandems and rickshaws, crowded the streets, while the tourist attractions increased with the opening of new venues and of the Dolphinarium. A LARGE RED CARPET In the 1970s, carriages with celebrities on board, heading to the Dancing Savioli for the Gran Premio Riccione per il mondo dello spettacolo event, pushed their way through walls of people. Among the female celebrities, Mina, Milva, Gina Lollobrigida, Raffaella Carrà, Patty Bravo, Iva Zanicchi, Rita Pavone and Anita Ekberg, but the list is endless. In order to host international events, imposing sports facilities were built, such as the Swimming Stadium where, in 2009, Federica Pellegrini set her sixth world record and, in 2021, she ended her spectacular career by winning her last race. The rest is recent history. The City of Riccione plans to celebrate its upcoming 100th birthday with a multitude of events.
