La Riviera Maya tiene aproximadamente 214,600 habitantes, de los cuales el 32% es nativo y el 68% restante no pertenece a la entidad, siendo la mayoría mexicanos de los Estados de Yucatán, Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz, y DF, respectivamente. En cuanto a la población extranjera, la mayor inmigración proviene de Centroamérica, Europa, Sudamérica y EEUU. (Según Censo de Población y Vivienda de 2010 realizado por el Instituro Nacional de Estadística y Geografía) The Riviera Maya has about 214.600 inhabitants, of which 32% is native and the remaining 68% belongs to othe places, mostly mexicans that come the states of Yucatan, Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz, and DF, respectively. En 2013 hubo un total de 4,158,135 turistas, de los cuales 887,593 pertenecen al Turismo nacional y 3,270,542 al extranjero. Idioma • Language
El idioma oficial de México es el español. En esta región la población indígena habla maya, pero en casi todos los lugares se habla el inglés, así como otros idiomas. Mexico’s official language is Spanish. In this region the indigenous population speaks Maya, but in most places, people speak English and other languages such as French, German or Italian.
Clima • Climate
El clima es semitropical, con una temperatura promedio anual de 26°C, pudiendo alcanzar los 35 °C en verano. Los días son cálidos y húmedos prácticamente todo el año, pero las temperaturas más altas se registran entre los meses de mayo y agosto, con lluvias sobre todo en las noches. La temporada de lluvias comprende septiembre y octubre, mientras que el tiempo más fresco y soleado se da en noviembre, diciembre y enero. Entre febrero y mayo el clima es primaveral, con pocas lluvias y noches frescas. The weather is semi-tropical, with an average temperature of 26°C but it can reach up to 35°C in summer. The days are warm and humid almost all year round, but the highest temperatures are between May and August, with rains mostly at night. The rainy season its in September and October, while the cooler weather and sunny occurs in November, December and January. Between February and May, the weather is perfect, few rains and cool nights.

Propinas • Tips
Las propinas son muy usuales en México, sobre todo a los meseros, botones, y en algunos casos a los prestadores de servicios. En el caso de los meseros, la propina es de entre el 10 y el 15% del total de la cuenta, en algunos restaurantes está incluida. Riviera Maya Moneda • Currency
La moneda oficial es el peso mexicano. Un dólar estadounidense equivale aproximadamente a 13 pesos mexicanos, variando de acuerdo a las fluctuaciones del mercado cambiario, pero también se aceptan dólares y tarjetas de crédito en muchos establecimientos. Existen muchas casas de cambio y bancos donde podrás conseguir pesos. Las primeras generalmente dan mejor cambio, no tienes que esperar largas filas, y no piden documentos. Si lo haces en un banco, sólo algunos cambian divisas, ninguno cambia Euros y debes llevar tu pasaporte. En nuestro mapa encontrarás su ubicación y la de cajeros automáticos. The official currency is the peso. One U.S. dollar equals about 13 Mexican pesos, which varies according to fluctuations in the exchange market, but also in most of the places they accept dollars and credit cards. There are many bureaux de change and banks where you can get pesos. The bureaux de change give better rates, you don’t have to wait long lines and they don’t ask for any documents, if you decide to do it in a bank, they just change some currencies and almost none change € and you should always bring your passport. Agua • water
En la mayoría de los lugares de México el agua del grifo NO es potable, pero sirve para bañarse. Si no estás seguro que el agua ha sido tratada debes usar agua embotellada para beber, lavarte los dientes, y hacer cubitos de hielo. In most places in Mexico tap wáter is NOT drinkable, but it serves to bathe. If you are not sure that the water has been treated, you should use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice cubes.
Seguridad en Playas • Beach Safety
Las playas de los hoteles de la Riviera Maya y Playa del Carmen, así como las de poblados aledaños, cuentan con guardavidas. Es importante conocer y respetar el significado de las banderas de colores que se hallan en la playa e indican el estado de la marea. Roja-Negra: peligro Amarilla: precaución Verde o Azul: aguas tranquilas. The hotel beaches of the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen, as well as the neighboring towns, have lifeguards. Transporte • Transportation
Muchos hoteles y agencias de viaje, operan con sus propios transportes, sólo tienes que verificar con tu tour operador. Los vuelos llegan al Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún, de ahí salen autobuses ADO, cada 40 minutos durante todo el día a partir de las 9:45 am hasta las 11:15 pm, hacia Puerto Morelos ($ 80 MN, U$S 6 aprox.) y Playa del Carmen ($140 MN, U$S 11 aprox.), cuya ruta culmina en la terminal que se encuentra sobre la Quinta Avenida. A la salida de la misma hay un sitio de taxis que podrán llevarte a tu destino. Ver tarifas de taxis en el mapa de Riviera Maya. Para moverte dentro de la Riviera Maya, puedes tomar un autobús para ir a Tulum, Playa del Carmen, o Cancún, desde la terminal de ADO de cualquiera de estas localidades, que salen a diferentes horarios (consulta www.ado.com.mx). Una opción más rápida, y que además te permitirá ir parando en el balneario que desees, son las Vans que salen cuando se llenan, cada 10 minutos aprox. En Playa del Carmen las que se dirigen a Tulum y Cancún están en calle 2 entre Av. 15 y 20. En Tulum salen desde el pueblo, sobre la Carretera frente al ADO, pero puedes pararlas en cualquier punto del trayecto que quieras. En Cancún se aparcan sobre la Av. Tulum, frente al ADO, junto a la Comercial Mexicana. Lo ideal es rentar un carro para tener total libertad, ya que a algunos lugares no entran las Vans, o te dejan lejos. Puedes reservarlo por internet desde tu lugar de origen y retirarlo en el aeropuerto. In Tulum, you can find these vans just in front of the ADO bus station, you can ask the driver to stop at any point along the way. In Cancun, the vans are parked on Tulum Avenue, on the opposite side of the ADO bus station, outside from Comercial Mexicana, a supermarket. The ideal, is to rent a car to have total freedom, this because there are some places where you cant acces by either buses, vans or taxis. Riviera Maya Estancia de los extranjeros en México The foreigner’s stay in Mexico A su llegada al aeropuerto de Cancún, le entregarán una tarjeta de Turista (FM-T), disponible sólo para los que entran a México de vacaciones, la cual autoriza al extranjero a transitar o permanecer en territorio nacional por un tiempo ininterrumpido no mayor a 180 días, contados a partir de la fecha de entrada, sin permiso para realizar actividades sujetas a una remuneración en el país.
Los siguientes ciudadanos son elegibles para una tarjeta de turista: a) países de la UE estancias de hasta 180 días (excepto los nacionales de Austria, Chipre, República Checa, Estonia, Francia, Grecia, Hungría, Italia, Letonia, Lituania, Polonia, Portugal , República Eslovaca y Eslovenia, que pueden permanecer hasta 90 días); b) Canadá, Japón y los EE.UU. estancias de hasta 180 días; c), Andorra, Argentina, Bermuda, Brasil, Chile, Costa Rica, Liechtenstein, Nueva Zelanda, Noruega, San Marino, Singapur, Suiza y Uruguay hasta 180 días; d) Australia, Islandia, Israel, Corea (Rep.), Mónaco y Sudáfrica, un máximo de 90 días; e) de Venezuela estancias de hasta 30 días.
Nota: La oficina consular se reserva el derecho de solicitar pruebas adicionales, tales como billetes de regreso y prueba de medios financieros. Es importante conservar la Tarjeta de Turista pues será requerida a la salida del país y no exceder la cantidad de días otorgados. Si le dieron menos días de los que requiere su estancia podrá solicitar la renovación de dicha tarjeta en la oficina de migración más cercana a su domicilio vacacional. Reglas de manejo Cuida tu vida y la de los demás Caring for your life and the other NO EXCEDAs EL LÍMITE DE VELOCIDAD Y UTILIza SIEMPRE EL CINTURÓN DE SEGURIDAD
Según el Artículo 160, la velocidad máxima permitida en la ciudad es de 40 km por hora y en zonas escolares de 30 km por hora. En los alrededores de la ciudad, en los tramos de urbanización de carretera federal, la máxima es de 80 km por hora. No obstante los límites de velocidad señalados debes restringir la velocidad teniendo en cuenta las condiciones del tránsito, del camino, de la visibilidad, del vehículo y del propio conductor. El Artículo 248 establece que se sancionará con arresto administrativo de 12 a 36 horas de retención a la persona que se le detenga por conducir un vehículo bajo la influencia de bebidas alcohólicas, de enervantes o estupefacientes.
REGLAMENTO DE TRÁNSITO DE QUINTANA ROO. APOYO AL TURISTA Artículo 241: Se establece en el Estado la Boleta de Infracción de Cortesía que
la Dirección de Tránsito, en su jurisdicción respectiva aplicará exclusivamente a los Turistas que infrinjan el Reglamento de Tránsito. La Boleta de Infracción de Cortesía no implica costo alguno al que se impone, siendo su objetivo señalar la violación cometida y exhortar a conducir cumpliendo con las reglas de Tránsito. La Sanción de Cortesía es aplicada hasta en dos ocasiones al mismo vehículo y/o conductor y no procede en los casos de actos y omisiones graves contrarios a lo que dispone el presente Reglamento.
Artículo 242: Todo el personal de tránsito tendrá la obligación de prestar información que requiera el Turista, para localización de calles, dependencias, hoteles o en su caso indicando las carreteras o entronques de las mismas que agilice su tránsito dentro y fuera de la entidad. According to Article 160, the speed limit in town is 40 km/h in school zones of 30 km/h. On the outskirts of the city, in the sections of urbanization in the federal highway, the maximum is 80 km/h. Not withstanding the speed limits, you will restrict the speed taking in consideration traffic conditions, road, visibility, the vehicle and the driver. Article 248 establishes that administrative detention is punished by 12 to 36 hours of detention of the person who was stopped for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages, narcotics or drugs.
TRAFFIC REGULATION OF QUINTANA ROO SUPPORT FOR TOURISTS Article 241: Set in the “State Courtesy Ballot of Violation to the Traffic Division”,
in their respective jurisdiction applies only to tourists who violate traffic regulations. The Courtesy Ballot has no cost and aims to point out the violation and encourage driver compliance with traffic rules. The Courtesy Punishment is applied twice to the same vehicle and / or driver and not appropriate in cases of serious acts and omissions contrary to what is stated in this Regulation.
Article 242: All traffic personnel will be required to provide information required by the Tourist, for location of streets, offices, hotels or possibly indicating roads or junctions of them to expedite their passage within and outside the entity.

• El copal
Conocido como copalli (Náhuatl), “Po’om” o “Pu’us”, es una resina que quemada como incienso fue y es utilizada hoy en día para sus rituales sagrados.
• El cacao
Simboliza para los mayas vigor físico y longevidad. Éstos hacían un brebaje amargo, el Chocolha hecho de semillas de cacao que consumían únicamente los reyes y los nobles, y en rituales sagrados.
• El maíz
Cultivo símbolo de este pueblo ya que ha sido el elemento central de su agricultura. Los mayas consideraban que fue una dádiva de los Dioses a los hombres, y que cultivarlo y cuidarlo era un deber sagrado. Según el Popol Vuh, el ser humano fue hecho de maíz.
• El tabaco
Utilizado para parar el pensamiento, enfocarse y centrarse en uno mismo, para poder escuchar a los espíritus guías de la naturaleza y a los seres que habitan en otras dimensiones o planos de conciencia. Ya fuese fumado, inhalado, masticado con cal o consumido en combinación con otras sustancias, se usaba para propiciar el trance extático y la adivinación.
• La Ceiba or Yaxché
It’s the sacred Tree of Mayan life. The higher or spiritual level is represented by the branches, the human level or our reality is represented by the trunk, and the underworld is represented by the roots.
• Copal
Known as copalli (from Nahuatl language), “Po’om” or “Pu’us”, is a resin that when burned as incense was and is used today for their sacred rituals.
• Cocoa
Symbolizes to the Mayan culture physical strenght and longevity. The Mayas made a bitter brew, the Chocolha made out of cacao seeds, this was only consumed by kings and nobles and also sacred rituals.

Flora y fauna Tiburón ballena, dócil gigante del océano... Es el pez más grande del mundo: puede alcanzar una longitud de 15 m y pesar más de 15 toneladas. Presenta una cola de 2,5 m de lado a lado; su boca tiene capacidad para tragar a una persona pero es inofensivo para el hombre y no ataca aunque se le provoque. Con su cuerpo aerodinámico, alargado y robusto, de color gris oscuro moteado, con lunares blancos o amarillentos se desliza lentamente. Su número es relativamente reducido y habita en aguas templadas cálidas y tropicales. Sus mandíbulas están armadas por multitud de dientes pequeños dispuestos en más de tres filas. Nadando cerca de la superficie ingiere, como una aspiradora, grandes tragos de agua filtrando el alimento (plancton y pequeños peces, como anchovetas y calamares) a través de las branquias. Como la mayoría de los tiburones es ovovivíparo y sus huevos (llegan a medir 30 cm de largo), se abren en el interior de la hembra que pare crías vivas. También conocido como “Dominó”, “Damero” y “Pez Dama”, visita para comer y aparearse de Junio a Septiembre las aguas de Holbox e Isla Contoy. Es uno de los pocos sitios donde permanece 4 meses del año, representando una oportunidad para el ecoturismo con tiburón ballena, que se compone básicamente de viajes de observación y nado. Se encuentra bajo peligro de extinción ya que está expuesto a la caza y a la captura incidental. Por esta razón en el año 2002 Underwater Editions, junto con la comunidad de Holbox, implementó un programa para su conservación, fijando códigos de conducta tanto para locales como para turistas. Whale shark, docile giant of the ocean... It’s the largest fish on earth: It can reach a length of 15 meters (49 feet) and a weight of more than 15 tons. It has a 2.5 meter long tail; its mouth has the capacity to swallow a person but it’s harmless for humans and does not attack even if it’s threatened. Its aerodynamic, large and robust, dark grey dotted body with white and yellowish spots glides slowly. Their number is relatively small and they inhabit warm temperate and tropical waters. Their jaws are armed with numerous small teeth arranged in more than three rows. Swimming close to the surface it swallows – like a vacuum cleaner – big gulps of water filtering food (plankton and little fish like anchovies and squids) through the gills. Like the majority of the sharks the whale shark is ovoviviparous and its eggs (they can reach a length of 30 cm) open inside the female who gives birth to living pups. Also known as “Domino” (“Dominó”), “Checker-board” (“Damero”) and “Lady Fish” (“Pez Dama”), to eat and to mate from June to September, they visit the waters of Holbox and Isla Contoy. This is one of the few places where it stays for four months of the year, representing an opportunity for the ecotourism with the whale shark, which basically consists in observation trips and swimming. It is threatened with extinction as it is exposed to hunting and bycatch. XAMAN-HA
XAMAN-HA (“agua del norte”), hoy Playa del Carmen, fue una comunidad habitada mayormente en el Posclásico Tardío (1250-1528 d.C.), última fase del desarrollo independiente de los mayas, llamada período Decadente. Ya no existían ciudades como Chichen Itzá, Mayapán o Coba. El mar jugaba un papel importante debido a una red comercial marítima que unía sitios tan lejanos como la costa de Honduras y Tabasco. Además la pesca era una fuente primordial de alimento. Se supone que Xaman-ha, junto con Polé (hoy Xcaret), servían como puerto de desembarque de la isla de Cozumel, destino de peregrinaciones religiosas al santuario de la diosa Ixchel (Deidad Maya de la luna, la medicina, la sanidad, el embarazo y la adivinación). Uno de los grupos se localiza en la calle 2 entre Quinta Av. y el mar y el resto en Playacar fase I, al sur del centro de Playa del Carmen. Como es una zona residencial no se cobra entrada pero sí hay una caseta de seguridad que te preguntará adónde vas. Si están de buenas te dejarán entrar con el carro. • Tip: Lleva traje de baño porque la playa ahí está preciosa!! También puedes encontrar una albarrada en la Quinta Av. entre calle 12 y 14. Zonas arqueológicas TULUM
Su nombre antiguo Zamá (“amanecer” en maya) pasó a ser Tulum (ciudad amurallada) con la llegada de los españoles. La ciudad vivió su máximo esplendor entre los siglos XIII y XV. Cuenta con 4 accesos y 2 torres de observación, que dan cuenta del grado de control que se ejerció sobre quienes pretendieron entrar a esta zona. En el área central se encuentran los edificios principales, que en su mayoría tuvieron funciones tipo ceremonial, delimitados por una segunda muralla interior. El Castillo es el más sobresaliente por su tamaño, ubicación y la singular fachada de su templo superior, que hacía de faro para los navegantes mayas. Enfrente hay una plataforma, posiblemente para danzantes. Al norte está el Templo del Dios Descendente, un pequeño basamento sobre el que se construyó un edificio ornamentado con la imagen de esa deidad, principal elemento iconográfico de la ciudad. De la calzada principal se destaca el Templo de los Frescos cuyas pinturas murales retratan una serie de seres sobrenaturales residentes en el inframundo, y constituyen uno de los más importantes testimonios de la pintura mural maya prehispánica. También la Casa de las Columnas y la Casa del Halach Uinik, son interesantes ejemplos de la arquitectura residencial de Tulum. Cuenta con una caleta donde atracaban las naves mayas dedicadas al comercio en torno a la península. The house of the Columns and the House of Halach Uinik are some examples of the residential architecture of Tulum. Si bien fue habitada en el período Preclásico tardío (300 a.C - 250 d.C) no queda evidencia arquitectónica, por lo que se supone que las construcciones fueron de madera y palma, que abundan en la región. Aprovechando su estratégica ubicación geográfica, que les permitía una rápida comunicación con el mar Caribe a través de las lagunas y el canal que las une, establecieron un incipiente intercambio comercial con sitios lejanos del norte de Belice. Durante la época Clásica (250-800 / 1000 d.C), registra un incremento demográfico e inicia la construcción de estructuras habitacionales y de carácter cívico religioso. Alrededor del año 600, cesaron los vínculos comerciales con Belice y se entabló una nueva relación con sitios del interior de la península como Coba y Xelhá. La mayor parte de los restos arquitectónicos documentados datan del período Postclásico temprano y especialmente del tardío (899 / 1000 - 1550), cuando Muyil, bajo la hegemonía de Chichén Itzá primero y de Mayapán después, formó parte de la red comercial costera que cobró un enorme auge en el ámbito peninsular. Por su ubicación en la reserva de Sian Ka’an, Muyil es un sitio especialmente atractivo para el interesado en conocer y admirar el ecosistema con su gran riqueza de flora y fauna. Es relevante la singularidad arquitectónica de El Castillo (17 m) y el arreglo de los edificios circundantes. Cobá o “aguas removidas por los vientos”, es una de las zonas arqueológicas más grandes de la región maya, cuyo auge ocurrió entre el año 300 y 1000 de nuestra era, llegando a tener 70,000 habitantes. En el centro de la ciudad y muy cerca de los templos, edificios públicos y el juego de pelota, habitaban los gobernantes, sacerdotes, dirigentes y guerreros de alto rango, el resto vivía en los alrededores en chozas de paja. Con una superficie de 70 km2 y con más de 6,500 estructuras, estaba unida por medio de 45 Sacbes (“caminos blancos”) que los comunicaban con los diferentes grupos de estructuras, sitios cercanos y otras ciudades más lejanas. El más extenso, con una longitud de 120 kms, llega hasta Yaxuná cerca de Chichen Itzá. Durante los siglos V al X de nuestra era, se distinguió como un centro político y comercial. Concentraba y distribuía bienes y servicios entre la costa oriental y la Península de Yucatán Durante el Posclásico (1000-1450 d.C.) perdió su dominio al tiempo que surgieron ciudades como Tulum, Muyil y otras. Chichén Itzá (“en la orilla del pozo de los itzáles” en maya) fue capital de un amplio territorio en la península de Yucatán, encabezado por la liga de Mayapán, del 987 hasta el año 1200 d.C. Es famosa mundialmente por el juego de luz y de sombra que en cada equinoccio ocurre sobre la escalinata del basamento piramidal conocido como El Castillo. En éste, el sol, conforme asciende sobre el horizonte, va iluminando la alfarda, creando triángulos de luz y sombra que parecen descender hasta la cabeza de la serpiente. Este evento manifiesta el gran nivel de conocimiento astronómico y arquitectónico que los mayas poseían. Además de la organización política, territorial y la explotación de recursos. El Caracol, reconocido como observatorio astronómico, es uno de los edificios más impresionantes de la ciudad, en el que sólo entraban los sacerdotes que medían acontecimientos astrales. Lo ideal es contratar un tour en la Quinta Avenida o en una agencia, que por $ 600-$ 700 pesos incluyen: traslado ida y vuelta desde el hotel, visita a Valladolid y a un cenote, lunch y entrada a Chichén Itzá. Es un sitio muy bonito que funciona como balneario y está abierto todos los días de 9 am. a 5 pm. La entrada tiene un valor de $ 20 pesos, y $ 100 pesos para buzos. También se rentan Kayak a $35 - 50 pesos por hora. Located in the 218Km Federal Highway; about 5 miles (9km) going through Tulum to Chetumal. This lagoon is an incredible place that works as a seaside resort; opened from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily. The entrance fee is $20pesos and for divers $100 pesos. Laguna Nopalitos • Nopalitos lagoon
Se ubica a 19 km al sur de Tulum. Yendo por la carretera federal 2 km antes de llegar al sitio arqueológico de Muyil se encuentra Pino Suárez. Allí debes doblar a tu izquierda y seguir el camino hasta el final donde encontrarás la laguna. Es ideal para nadar, sobre todo para los niños pues no es muy profunda. Está abierta todos los días de 9 am. a 5 pm. No se cobra entrada pero hay un cuidador que mantiene el lugar muy limpio y en buenas condiciones que bien merecida tiene su propina. It is located 12 miles (19km) south of Tulum going through Federal Highway. Before the archaeological site of Muyil there is a small town named PinoSuárez turn left and go straight, there you will see the lagoon. It is a perfect place to swim, most of all for children as it is not very deep. There is no entrance fee, but a worker takes care of the place to keep it clean, then a tip will be well deserved. It is opened from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily.

Pertenecientes a la Reserva de la biosfera de Sian Ka´an estas 2 lagunas fueron estratégicas para los mayas en su época pues permitieron a los habitantes del sitio arqueológico de Muyil la conexión con el mar, a través de un canal que ellos mismo cavaron hace 1000 años, logrando una red comercial hasta lugares tan remotos como Guatemala y Honduras. En la actualidad se puede hacer el recorrido de los antiguos mayas con un tour que parte de la laguna de Muyil hasta un pequeño y misterioso templo maya, que fue usado como parada de descanso y agencia aduanal en la ruta comercial, organizado por la Cooperativa “Uyo ochel maya” . Pasando el sitio arqueológico y los paraderos giras a tu izquierda en el km.205 por un camino de terracería que te conducirá a la laguna y allí verás las lanchas con los guías que dan los tours. Laguna de Sian Ka ´an • Sian Ka´an lagoon
En la Reserva de la biosfera de Sian Ka’an (“lugar donde nace el cielo”, en maya), muy cerca de la costa, se encuentran 6 lagunas más: Campechen, Boca Paila, San Miguel, Xamach, Catoche y Santali, que juntas componen un gran manto acuífero que va desde Tulum hasta Punta Allen. Durante la época de esplendor maya, sirvieron como vías de tránsito entre las ciudades de Tulum y Muyil. Es una zona espectacular no sólo por su paisaje si no porque además alberga a más de 1400 especies de plantas, 800 de flores, 340 especies de aves, un centenar de diversos mamíferos, decenas de reptiles y peces, y un puñado de animales en peligro de extinción. Entre las actividades más destacadas está es la pesca con mosca (fly fishing) en donde se captura al pez para luego, sin matarlo, regresarlo al agua. También puedes rentar un Kayak o contratar una lancha que te lleve por sus laberínticos manglares, en donde podrás ver tucanes, loros, cormoranes, cocodrilos, tortugas y, si tienes suerte, hasta manatíes. Además en la parte ancha de la laguna seguramente encontrarás delfines que nadarán a tu alrededor mientras navegas. Un paseo idílico!! Podrás contratar un recorrido en el Cesiak, o en Punta Allen, único poblado de la reserva. Viniendo de Playa del Carmen antes de llegar al centro de Tulum debes girar a tu izquierda en el 1er.semáforo (que funciona), hacia la costa, donde se encuentra la zona hotelera. Allí continúa hacia el sur (a tu derecha) hasta llegar al arco de entrada de la Reserva de la biosfera de Sian Ka´an. A 4 km está el Cesiak. Si quieres ir a Punta Allen entonces sigue por el camino de terracería hasta llegar a la punta. No pierdas la paciencia pues el camino está dañado pero valdrá el esfuerzo. In the Sian Ka´an biosphere reserve, and very close to the coast, there are 6 lagoons named: Campeche, Boca Paila, San Miguel, Xamach, Catoche and Santalli, all together formed the great aquifer that comes from Tulum till Punta Allen. Such lagoons served as a passage between Tulum and Muyil. From Playa del Carmen and before getting the center of Tulum turn left in the very first traffic light (the one that works) to the coast where is the hotel zone, keep going towards south and turn right as soon as you see the main entrance of the Sian Ka´an biosphere reserve.Approximately 2 miles (4km) from Sian Ka´an is Cesiak but if you want to go to Punta Allen you have to keep going through the dirt path. We recommend you to be patient because the path is not in good conditions but the goal place really worth it! Antiguamente llamada XAMAN-HA (agua del norte), fue una comunidad construida y habitada por los mayas en la costa del mar Caribe, que vivió las primeras incursiones de los españoles, quienes lo describieron como un pequeño pueblo de pescadores. Localizada en el Señorío de EKAB durante el Periodo Clásico (400 d.C. y el 900 d.C.) funcionó, al igual que Zammá (Tulum), Polé (Xcaret) y Xel-há, como puerto y centro de comercio y ceremonias. Estas actividades se mantuvieron en forma constante hasta la llegada de los españoles en el siglo XVI cuando fue conquistada en 1526 por Francisco de Montejo, quien fundó la villa de Salamanca en donde actualmente se encuentra Xel-há. La historia moderna de Playa del Carmen se especula comenzó con el arribo de las primeras familias provenientes de la Península de Yucatán, obligadas por las contingencias de la guerra de castas (1847-1901) en busca de tierras menos conflictivas donde establecerse; aquí formaron una comunidad de pescadores y productores de cocoteros y del chicozapote, árbol del cual se extraía la savia para fabricar el chicle. Most of the coral reefs are located at a very short distance from the coast and at a shallow depth, which makes them very accessible. The most well known reef in Playa del Carmen for snorkeling is the Zubul Reef, at Coco Beach. Aquí en Playa del Carmen lo realiza la empresa Skydive desde hace 18 años, ubicados en Plaza Marina, Local 32, Zona Marina Federal Sur (junto al muelle del ferry a Cozumel). Si vas a transportarte dentro de la ciudad, existen autobuses, taxis y Vans que te llevan a donde quieras. La base del servicio colectivo está en la Av. Juárez esquina Av. 25 y la tarifa mínima es de $ 5 pesos. Los taxis los puedes tomar en cualquier esquina, o en los llamados “sitios de taxi”, donde te cobrarán una tarifa extra por el servicio. La tarifa mínima es de 20 pesos dentro de una misma zona (ver tarifas mapa). Si quieres pedir un taxi puedes hacerlo al 877-3859/ 60. Te cobrarán $ 10 pesos por ir a buscarte. If you just want to go to Cancun or Tulum, you can take the ADO or van, the second option is a bit faster, and leaving every 10 minutes or when the van is full. To go towards Cancun should take the vans that are in lane 2 between Avenida 20 and 25, and which are aimed at Tulum Avenue lane 2 between 15 and 20. The ADO runs approximately every hour.

un arte ancestral representativo de su ideosincracia Por: Gabriela Perosa
Acompañada de Josefina, oriunda de Tzucacab, Yucatán, y disfrutando de un momento magistral en su humilde casa taller, descubrí la relación intrínseca que existe entre la artesanía textil y su cosmovisión maya. Este arte ancestral, transmitido mayormente por herencia familiar, es la base de su patrimonio cultural, así como su medio de vida. Rodeada de huipiles, ternos y fustanes bordados, vestimenta básica de las mujeres mayas, pude observar la sensibilidad para mantener cuidadosamente los detalles de la tradición, interpretando de este modo su legado y trasladándonos a la antigüedad, en un viaje de colores y diseños únicos. Con sus 62 años, Josefina, dedicó toda su vida a la artesanía y al cuidado de su familia, tejiendo y bordando con el corazón. Inicialmente lo realizaba sólo con sus manos, y luego fue dejando que las agujas, el telar y su máquina de bordar completen el trabajo. Como recurso económico, es la base de supervivencia. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, le permite plasmar su visión, arte y estilo, expresando así toda su creatividad de una forma singular. En el pueblo del cual ella es originaria esta actividad es muy antigua y aun es la clave del sustento. No hay distinción de género, lo realizan hombres y mujeres, niños, jóvenes, adultos y ancianos. Todos deben colaborar para llevar adelante la comunidad. Únicamente se diferencian las mujeres por realizar mayormente vestimentas y adornos, así como los hombres hamacas o trabajos con materiales pesados. Ella se formó en este arte con tan sólo 12 años de edad, gracias a la enseñanza de una mujer local que ofrecía su hogar para transmitir este conocimiento ancestral. Los principales tipos de tejidos y bordados que realiza son huipiles, ternos, fustanes, bolsas, bultos, chalecos, shorts y blusas, llevándole tres días de trabajo si son a mano, y tres horas en su máquina. Se basa en una fusión de varias técnicas, teniendo en cuenta la labor con una o dos agujas, y los más populares de la región son los conocidos como cáscara de caracol, palmeras, pilares, orillas de abanico, flor de almendras, orejita de conejo, rejillas, calados, sombreados y renacimiento.

Fashion & beauty Su arte no le requiere transportarse hacia otros sitos, por lo que ella sólo trabaja en su taller de Playa del Carmen, y en raras ocasiones viaja a Cozumel. Asimismo mantiene un fuerte lazo con la iglesia local la cual, según nos cuenta Josefina, ofrece a quienes tienen el don la posibilidad de trabajar en conjunto. Esto implica que hermanas y pastores, con cierta frecuencia, le brinden la materia prima para que realice sus bordados, y posteriormente reciba un pago a cambio de los mismos. La iglesia luego los vende, teniendo como fin juntar fondos para la institución. Ella además compra hilos de alta seda, estambres y telas aquí en la ciudad, en Mérida y Valladolid. Nos cuenta “yo hago este trabajo porque me encanta, me da mucho gusto y no me fastidia. Puedo pasar largas horas frente a mi máquina de bordar”. En definitiva, es su medio de subsistencia, pero elige los diseños con mucho placer y utiliza sus manos para transformar las prendas en obras artísticas. … “no hay algo que se venda más que otra cosa, todo se vende”… Al mismo tiempo, es madre de 12 hijos, hermana, esposa y abuela, realizando diversas tareas del hogar. Considera que su arte es altamente valorado y que hay una buena relación con los precios que cobra, en base al tiempo de trabajo y cantidad de material utilizado. Su cosmovisión…”todos los días me dicen qué hermosa ropa que yo hago, la vida es así, la gente viene y compra con mucho gusto, y los precios están bien, es lo que se puede vender aquí...” Esta es la artesanía mexicana del área de Yucatán, el vivo reflejo de la calidez, humildad y estilo propio.

Accompanied by Josefina, a native of Tzucacab, Yucatan, and enjoying a sensational moment in her modest house workshop, I discovered the intrinsic relationship that exists between the textile handcraft and her Mayan world view. This ancestral art mostly transmitted by family heritage is the basis of their cultural heritage as well as their way of life. Surrounded by typical regional blouses, suits and embroidered petticoats, basic clothing of Mayan women, I could observe the sensitivity to carefully keep the details of tradition, interpreting thus his legacy traveling back to the ancient times, on a journey of colors and unique designs.

Fashion & beauty With her 62 years, Josefina has dedicated her whole life to the handcrafts and the care of her family, weaving and embroidering with the heart. Initially, she made it only with her own hands and then letting the needles, the loom and the embroidery machine complete the work. As an economic recourse, this is the basis of her survival. However, at the same time, it allows her to shape her vision, art and style expressing all her creativity in a unique way. In her home town this ancient activity is still the key for living. There is no difference between gender, everybody does the work: men, women, children, adults, young and old. Everybody has to collaborate to help the community develop. The only difference is that women do more clothing and the ornaments and men the hammocks and the work where heavy material is involved. She herself learned this art at the age of 12 by a local woman who offered her to stay in her home to teach her this ancestral knowledge. The principal types of embroideries and knitting that she makes are typical blouses, suits and petticoats, bags, vests, shorts and shirts and take them three days of work if they are handmade and three hours by machine. It is based on a fusion of various techniques using one or two needles. The most popular techniques of the region are known as snail shells, palm trees, fan edges, almond flowers, bunny ears, pillars, grill, lace, shading and revival. Her art doesn’t require her to transport to other places, she only works in her shop in Playa del Carmen; in rare occasions she goes to Cozumel. In addition she maintains a strong bound with the local church which offers those who are gifted the possibility to collaborate. This implies that sisters and pastors, with some frequency, provide the raw material to make the embroidery and subsequently receive a payment in exchange for her work .The church then sells it to raise funds for the institution.
She also buys high silk threads, yarns and fabrics here in the city, Merida and Valladolid. She tells us: “I do this work because I love it, it gives me a great pleasure and does not bother me at all. I could spent hours in front of the embroidery machine.” Finally, it is her livelihood, but she chooses the designs with great pleasure and uses her hands to transform the garments in a master piece of art… “There is no thing that is sold more than another, everything sells well”…. At the same time, she is the mother of 12 children, sister, wife and grandmother, and does various chores. She considers her art highly valued and there is a good relation between the price, the work time and the amount of material that she uses. Her world view… ”every day someone tells me how beautiful the clothing is that I make. Life is like this. People come and buy with a lot of pleasure, and the prices are good, this is what you can sell here….” This is the Mexican handcraft of the area of Yucatan, the vivid reflex of warmth, humility and unique style.

En el Museo de Buceo Cedam se exponen los equipos que se usaban para bucear a mediados del siglo XX; también hay muestras de esculturas mayas recuperadas en la zona y monedas antiguas rescatadas de galeones hundidos en las aguas mexicanas. Abierto todo el año de lunes a sábado de 9 am a 1 pm y de 2:30 pm a 5:30 pm. Está ubicado en la entrada principal del centro comercial y la marina, en el segundo piso en el edificio rosa. Buceo Cedam Museum is a place where you will see the diving equipment divers wore in the mid of the twentieth century. Puerto Aventuras es famoso en el mundo por la pesca deportiva, ya que prácticamente todo el año, y debido a las condiciones meteorológicas del mar Caribe, es bueno para pescar. La mejor temporada es desde mediados de marzo a fines de junio. Una gran ventaja es que los puntos de pesca son todos muy cercanos a la marina y no hay que hacer largas travesías en altamar para llegar a ellos. La renta del barco es a partir de 275 USD, todo depende de la capacidad, el tiempo, y los pies del mismo. Aunque si no quieres rentarlo solo puedes compartirlo con otros pescadores, y además llevar a un acompañante.

Puerto Aventuras is very known for its sport fishing activity, along the year it is practiced because of the ideal weather condition of the Caribbean sea. The best fishing season starts on March ending on June, the good thing is that fishing points are located very near to the Marina and you do not need to go far away to get them. If you are to rent a boat check at the prices as they come from US$275 depending on the model, time and size. You can also share a boat with local fishermen without paying which is a good option too.

From Playa del Carmen is better to take the shuttle that leaves in 2nd St between 15th and 20th Av., every 10 minutes or as soon as it is full, it costs no more than $25 pesos. Ask the driver to stop in Puerto Aventuras then walk towards la Marina for about 1 mile. However, if you go by car you have to take the south Federal Highway in the 19km as soon as you see a bridge take the right side and in the first return turn left then at your right you will see the main entrance.

Akumal Akumal es un paraíso para nadar, snorkelear, bucear o ir de pesca, un sitio de encanto y fascinación para los visitantes de todo el mundo. Su espectacular bahía de aguas transparentes, las aguas dulces de sus cuevas y ríos subterráneos, y el arrecife cercano, hacen de este lugar otro de los relajantes paraísos del Caribe mexicano. Está localizado aproximadamente a 37 km al sur de Playa del Carmen, y a sólo 26 km al norte de Tulum, en la Riviera Maya. Es muy fácil llegar en autobús, en taxi o en coche. La carretera es de doble carril y tiene muchas señalizaciones. Akumal, en idioma maya significa “Tierra de tortugas”, ya que de mayo a octubre cientos de tortugas Carey y Verde, llegan a desovar a sus orillas.
Históricamente es el primer destino turístico de la franja costera de la península de Yucatán. Originalmente era una enorme plantación de cocoteros propiedad de don Argimiro Argüelles hasta 1958 cuando la descubrió el CEDAM (Club de Exploración y Deportes Acuáticos de México), y se volvió la sede de esta agrupación cuyo interés era la búsqueda de tesoros submarinos. Cuenta con 50 años de historia desde que fue fundado por Pablo Bush Romero en 1959. Cancún y Playa del Carmen aún no existían, la única manera de llegar era por lancha desde Cozumel. A la entrada de Akumal se encuentra un monumento a Gonzalo Guerrero. Considerado el padre del mestizaje, fue un marino español y uno de los primeros europeos en asentarse en el seno de una cultura indígena, tanto que llegó a ser un jefe Maya. Murió luchando contra los conquistadores españoles al mando de Pedro de Alvarado. Historically, Akumal is the first tourist destination in the coastal strip of the Yucatan Peninsula. The place used to be a coconut plantation whose ownership was Argimiro Argüelles, but in 1958 the Club de Exploración y Deportes Acuáticos de México for its acronym in Spanish (CEDAM) turned it into headquarter of the club, as they were very interested in the pursuit of marine treasures. The club was founded by Pablo Bush Romero in 1959, and due to Playa del Carmen and Cancun had not been established yet, the only way to get there was by boat coming from Cozumel. At the main entrance there is a monument of Gonzalo Guerrero who was considered the father of the crossbreeding in the zone. Gonzalo was a Spanish sailor who got to be pretty involved with indigenous at the point of became a Mayan chief. He died facing Spanish conquerors commanded by Pedro de Alvarado.

Akumal in Maya means “land of turtles”. It owes its name by the fact that hundreds of turtles such as green sea turtle and the hawksbill turtle arrive to its coasts from May to October to deposit their eggs. It is located 23 miles (37km) south of Playa del Carmen or 16 miles (26km) north of Tulum, in the Riviera Maya. It is very easy to get there by bus, taxi or your own car. Besides, the road is a well-signposting divided highway. It is a paradise for swimming, snorkeling, diving or fishing. Visitors will love this beautiful and charming place for sure and they will take delight in its clear water bay, fresh-water underground rivers and caves, and its close reefs.

Conocida como la Laguna de Yal-ku, es una caleta natural casi virgen que se encuentra a 2 km del centro bordeando la costera hacia el norte, en donde podrás nadar en aguas calmas y cristalinas, combinación de agua dulce procedente de ríos subterráneos y de agua salada de mar. Visitarla es una obligación por su increíble belleza natural que alberga una vida marina fascinante, maravillosos cardúmenes de peces multicolores, barracudas, etc., convirtiéndola en un estupendo lugar para snorkelear. Se recomienda llevar aletas y visor, o puedes rentarlos allí. Cuenta con baños, regaderas, vestidores, restaurante de snacks y área de estacionamiento. Abierto todos los días de 9 am a 5 pm. Also known as a Yal-Ku lagoon, it´s a small and almost pristine bay; located around 1 mile from the center following the shore towards north. In the cove you will be able to swim in its calm and clear waters coming from the underground. It is one place we recommend you to visit since you will see shoal of colorful fish, barracuda, etc. turning the place into a wonderful place for snorkeling. Bring your own gear or rent it there. En Akumal hay cerca de 200 entradas a cuevas subterráneas, con profundidades de hasta 150 m, que lo hacen un sitio de convocatoria para buceadores de todo el mundo. El maravilloso arrecife que protege la bahía, es el lugar perfecto para realizar inmersiones. Existen 15 diferentes lugares para bucear, entre ellos: el Arrecife Gorgonia (20-30mt), enfrente de la bella laguna de Chac; el arrecife Media Luna (10-20mt), frente a la bahía homónima. Morgan (18-25mt) localizado al noroeste de la bahía de Akumal, es el más cercano y perfecto para inmersiones nocturnas. Las Redes (15-30mt) está ubicado al sur de la bahía de Akumal. To get into the underground caves, Akumal has 200 entrances with depths of 492Ft (150m) that is why many divers come to this wealthy place. Its amazing coral reef is the perfect place to dive. There are 15 different places to dive such as: Gorgonia reef (65-98Ft) located in front of Chac lagoon, Media luna lagoon (65Ft) just in front of its homonym bay, Morgan (82Ft) located atnoth of Akumal bay, which is perfect for night dives. Finally, we have Las Redes located at south of Akumal bay with a depth of 49-98Ft.

It works to create and promote new strategies for ecosystem management in Akumal, through research and training, in order to preserve the environment in the Mexican Caribbean. En carro desde Playa del Carmen deberás tomar la carretera federal 307 hacia el sur, conducir unos 37 km y en el primer retorno pasando el puente de “Akumal” girar a la izquierda, y luego a tu derecha verás la entrada. Otra opción es tomar una Van ($ 35 pesos) en la calle 2 entre Av. 15 y 20; de allí salen rumbo a Tulum cada 10 minutos o cuando están completas, y le pides al chofer bajar en Akumal. ¡La temporada de la Tortuga ya llegó! The turtle season has finally arrived! De mayo a octubre las tortugas marinas llegan a las playas del Caribe Mexicano para anidar siendo posible hasta noviembre contemplar a sus crías. Sin embargo, durante todo el año se las puede ver alimentándose en las bahías de la Riviera Maya. Son reptiles de sangre fría ovíparos que usan sus pulmones para respirar. Viven tanto en aguas tropicales como templadas y sus principales depredadores son las aves, los cangrejos, los mapaches y los humanos. Aparecieron hace 245 millones de años pero hoy día se encuentran en peligro en todo el planeta por lo que en muchos países, incluyendo México, están protegidas por la ley. De las 8 especies de tortugas marinas existentes, 4 llegan a Quintana Roo: la Tortuga Verde, la Caguama, la Carey, y la Tortuga Laúd. Felizmente aquí hay varios grupos trabajando para proteger y producir información sobre las mismas. Entre ellos, el Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) y Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México. No las toques ni montes ya que el contacto humano puede causarles stress, perturbarlas y hacer peligrar sus vidas. Si estás de noche en la playa y ves una tortuga hembra desovando quédate lejos para no molestarla. Si permaneces a 3 m como mínimo podrás observarla pero debes hacer silencio y no fumar, ya que el ruido y los olores penetrantes pueden espantarla. Si no puede poner sus huevos correctamente, los arrojará al mar. Un nido de tortugas bebé resulta emocionante pero por favor no las manipules ni juegues con ellas porque deben encontrar su camino hacia el mar, de otro modo morirán. Durante la temporada de anidación, no uses linterna porque las luces las desorientan, tampoco cámaras fotográficas con flash o las típicas fogatas nocturnas. Hagamos todo lo posible para que las tortugas marinas ya no engrosen la lista de animales en peligro de extinción. From May to October the sea turtles arrive at the Mexican Caribbean beaches to nest. It’s possible to contemplate their hatchling till November. Though, during the whole year you can see them eating at the bays of the Rivera Maya. Sea turtles are cold-blooded, oviparous reptiles that breath through lungs. They live in tropical as well as temperate waters, and their main predators are birds, crabs, raccoons and humans. They appeared 245 million years ago but nowadays they are threatened with extinction, so that in many countries, including Mexico, they are protected by law. Of the eight existing sea turtle species, four can be found in Quintana Roo: The Green Turtle, the Loggerhead, the Hawksbill and the Leatherback. Fortunately, there are several groups working here to protect them and provide information about them. Among them, the Akumal Ecological Center (Centro Ecoloógico de Akumal – CEA) and the Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexcio (Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México). Don’t touch them and don’t ride on them because the contact with humans can cause them stress, disturb them and put their lives in danger. When you are at the beach at night and see a female turtle laying eggs stay away to not disturb her. If you stay at a distance of at least three meters you can observe her, but do not make any noises nor smoke because noises and strong smells can frighten her. If she cannot lay her eggs properly, she will take them with her to the sea. A baby turtle nest is very interesting but please don’t manipulate the baby turtles nor play with them because they have to find their way to the sea, otherwise they will die. During the nesting season, do not use flashlights because the lights disorient them. Do not use cameras with flash and don’t make bonfires. Let’s do whatever we can to remove the sea turtle from the list of endangered species.

Declarada en 1998 Área Natural Protegida, esta paradisíaca playa es santuario de la tortuga caguama y verde. Es la playa más importante en México para la anidación de estas especies que de mayo a octubre llegan a desovar a estas costas. Es una gran bahía caracterizada por el color azul turquesa de sus aguas, un lugar de gran riqueza ecológica, en donde se pueden practicar actividades de nado y snorkel y admirar diferentes tipos de ecosistemas, manglares, cenotes y arrecifes coralinos que forman un hermoso paisaje. Actualmente la Asociación Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C, en conjunto con el gobierno del Estado, desarrolla diferentes actividades para crear conciencia acerca de la importancia de la conservación de las diferentes especies que habitan el litoral del Caribe Mexicano. El horario de acceso a la playa es de 9 a 5 pm y se pide una aportación de $ 10 pesos por persona.

This paradise beach which was declared a Protected Natural Area in 1998, is the sanctuary of the large turtle (Caguama) and the green turtle. It is the most important beach in Mexico for the nesting of these species that reach these shores to spawn from May to October. It’s a large bay characterized by the turquoise color of the water, a place of great ecological wealth, where you can enjoy activities like swimming and snorkeling and admiring different types of ecosystems, mangrove swamps, cenotes and coral reefs that form beautiful landscapes. Currently the Association Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexico AC, with the support from the Quintana Roo State Government, carries out various activities to raise awareness of the importance of the conservation of the different species that inhabit the coast of the Mexican Caribbean. The access schedule to the beach is from 9:00 to 5:00 pm and the contribution is $10 pesos per person.

In the mid 80´s, this place was not visited very often, not even considered a touristic destination. However, due to the development in the hotel infrastructure along the shore, the place has become very popular for all kind of tourism. Its beach is wide, long and almost virgin, such a wonderful place to lay down under the sunrays and swim in the blue sea. For the ones who like sports; kiteboarding can be performed without concern in “Playa Azul” and “Playa Paraíso”, it will take you no more than three days to learn how to handle the kite and surfing perfectly the waves. Siguiendo por corredor costero Tulum-Boca Paila hacia el sur pasando el arco de entrada se arriba a la Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an (que significa “donde nace el cielo” en lengua maya), la mayor área protegida del Caribe mexicano y patrimonio de la humanidad declarada por la UNESCO. Y no es para menos ya que cuenta con 528 mil hectáreas de espacios naturales, 120 kilómetros de arrecifes de coral, 150 mil hectáreas de selvas, 1,048 especies entre algas marinas, musgos, helechos y plantas superiores, 103 clases de mamíferos (como el jaguar, puma, ocelote, mono saraguato), 339 especies de aves (219 residentes y 120 migratorias), 90 tipos de abejas nativas, 47 especies de libélulas, 74 variedades de escarabajos, 310 clases de moscos, 318 especies de mariposas diurnas, 84 tipos de corales, 276 géneros de crustáceos, y amplias zonas de pastos marinos, esteros, manglares, lagunas costeras, pantanos, sabanas de agua dulce, lagunas interiores, ciénagas y selvas. El camino está en mal estado pero bien valdrá la pena. La entrada a la Reserva tiene un costo de $ 28 pesos que se destinan a conservación e investigación del área. A 4 km del Arco está el Centro de ecoturismo y educación Cesiak, que brinda programas enfocados a la educación, difusión e investigación biológica y ambiental, y tours a la laguna para conocer islas, canales, antiguas rutas de comercio maya a través de manglares y humedales, y avistamiento de aves; también recorridos en Kayak y pesca deportiva. This reserve is the most protected area in the Mexican Caribbean and considered a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Punta Allen es una pequeña comunidad de pescadores en la Riviera Maya, de 470 habitantes, ubicada dentro de un Área Nacional Protegida (ANP), en medio de la Reserva de la biosfera de Sian Ka’an, un sitio ideal para el turismo ecológico. En los 60´s era un rancho productor de copra, aceite derivado del coco, muy demandado en aquellos tiempos para la iluminación de las casas y para cocinar. Con el transcurrir de los años, y al disminuir la producción cocotera por efecto de acontecimientos naturales, los lugareños encontraron en la langosta una valiosa alternativa para incentivar el desarrollo económico de la comunidad, convirtiéndose en la principal actividad productiva que emplea al 80% de la población. El ecoturismo, con un 11%, se encuentra en el segundo sitio de importancia en cuanto a la generación de ingresos. El paisaje de la zona ofrece jungla y mar, donde puedes practicar deportes acuáticos como el kayak y el snorkel, hacer buceo, pesca deportiva, paseos en lancha y observar aves y otros animales en su hábitat natural. Punta Allen is a very small community of fishermen in the Riviera Maya with a population of 470 residents. It is located in an Área Nacional Protegida (National Protected Area) for its acronym in Spanish (ANP), in the mid of the biosphere of Sian Ka´an, the perfect place for ecotourism. In the 70´s Punta Allen was a ranch where copra was produced. Copra is oil derived from the coconut; it was very popular and very demanded as people used it for illumination and cooking in houses.
Through time and because of low production in coconut, residents found in the lobster a very valuable alternative to boost their economy. Nowadays lobster hunting is the main income productive task employing 80% of the population, and with 11% ecotourism is found in second place. Punta Allen provides jungle and sea sceneries, as well as ecology and aquatic sports like kayak and snorkel as well as sport fishing which is a tradition in the place. Services like boat tours, diving, conservation of animals and birds are offered too. The place has 14 accommodation rustic style sites made of ecological wood with all the services, because of the lack of energy for being a protected place, everything works under solar energy. There are also 4 restaurants with a variety of dishes, mainly fish and seafood.

Puerto Morelos Puerto Morelos es un poblado tranquilo, relajado y muy seguro, fuera del bullicio de centros vacacionales. A mile south of downtown, on a secondary road, there is a marina with capacity for 150 boats. Navigation in the marine park is permitted by the inside or outside channels of the barrier reef, this can be done if the timing, the type of boat and following the guidelines of the park and harbor master.

Desde Playa del Carmen puedes tomar en la terminal ADO (Quinta Av. con Juárez) un autobús que sale cada 5, 15 y 20 minutos ($30 ó $78 dependiendo el autobus), o una Van, en calle 2 entre Av. 15 y 20 que sale hacia Cancún cada 10 minutos, o cuando está completa; al bajar deberás caminar o tomar un taxi porque no está muy cerca el pueblo, casi 2 km. En carro ve por la carretera federal hacia el norte 32 km, y en el semáforo dobla a tu derecha y llegarás al centro. By car is off Highway 32 km north, in the light bends turn to your right and you’ll get downtown.

One of the best ways to enjoy Cozumel is by scooter or car. The whole coast offers beautiful, almost deserted beaches, and for several miles you won’t meet anybody. The ideal is to rent a vehicle in the city center and from there head south and travel around the island, a tour of about 60 kilometer (37 miles). There are some beach clubs, but if you plan to enjoy the peacefulness of nature we recommend you to bring some water and food, as there aren´t many places along the way where you can buy stuff. • Tipp: Before taking the road back to the center stop at a bar at the beach, Freedom in the Paradise! It’s perfect to relax listening to reggae music in one of their hammocks; they also sell shrimp quesadillas since 1987! Well deserved after a day of adventure.

Una de las mejores maneras de disfrutar Cozumel es en scooter o carro, pues toda la costa ofrece unas playas paradisíacas y casi desiertas, y por muchos kilómetros no encontrarás gente. Lo ideal es rentar algo en el centro y de allí dirigirse hacia el sur y dar la vuelta a la isla, un recorrido de 60 kms. aprox. Existen algunos clubes de playa, pero si tu plan es disfrutar la paz de la naturaleza te recomendamos llevar agua y algo para comer, ya que no son muchos los lugares para comprar en el camino. • Tip: antes de retomar por la carretera transversal para volver al centro, hay un bar en la playa, Freedom in the Paradise, ideal para relajarte escuchando música reggae en una de sus hamacas; también venden quesadillas de camarón desde 1987. ¡Bien merecido después de un día de aventura!!

Los arrecifes de Cozumel son conocidos a nivel internacional por sus prístinas aguas y la diversidad y colorido de más de 250 especies de peces tropicales, tortugas, rayas y corales que conviven en este hábitat, llegando a 400.000 buzos que la visitan cada año. Existen aproximadamente 55 sitios distintos para bucear alrededor de la Isla. Los más populares, que se encuentran en el lado suroeste de la Isla, son: la pared Santa Rosa, todos los arrecifes de Palancar (en el que habitan esponjas gigantes) y los de la Colombia, el arrecife Paraíso (menos visitado, para aquellos amantes de la paz y la tranquilidad), Punta Sur, y Chun Chacab. Hay algunas empresas que ofrecen paquetes, pero si prefieres puedes acercarte al puerto y contratar uno de los muchos tours que abundan en la zona. The coral reefs of Cozumel are internationally famous for its pristine waters, its diversity and the variety of colors of more than 205 species of tropical fish, turtles, rays and corals that cohabit in this area; 400.000 scuba divers visit this place each year. There are around 55 different sites to dive along the island. The most popular sites are situated southeast of the island: the wall Santa Rosa, all the coral reefs of Palancar (inhabited by giant sponges), the reefs of the Colombia, the coral reef Paraíso (with less visitors, for those who love peace and quietness), Punta Sur and Chun Chacab. Some companies offer packages, but if you prefer you can go to the harbor and buy one of the many tours that are offered there.

Si bien la mayoría de los sitios para bucear son aptos para practicar snorkel, casi todos los tours te llevan a alguno de los 14 arrecifes que se encuentran ubicados en la zona central de la isla. Puedes contratarlos directamente cuando desembarcas del ferry, o en tu hotel. Algunas de las embarcaciones tienen fondo de cristal para que no te pierdas ni un instante las bellezas submarinas con las que cuenta la isla. While most of the scuba diving sites are suitable for snorkeling, almost all the tours take you to several of the 14 coral reefs located at the central part of the island. You can buy a tour immediately after getting off the ferry or at your hotel. Some of the boats have glass bottoms so you don’t miss any moment of the underwater beauties that the island has to offer. En atractivas exhibiciones ofrece una sencilla, clara y completa visión sobre el origen de la isla, su historia desde la época maya hasta el presente, su formación, sus características, flora, fauna y ecosistemas. Las visitas pueden ser guiadas (español e inglés), grupales o individuales. Se localiza en la Av. Rafael Melgar y esq. calle 6 Nte., a 3 cuadras del muelle principal. Abierto todos los días de 8 am a 5 pm, el costo de admisión es de $ 33 pesos. Niños menores de 9 años no pagan. This museum offers interesting exhibitions giving thus an easy, clear and very broad vision about the origin of the island, its history from the Mayan era to the present, its formation, characteristics, flora, fauna and ecosystems. You can make a guided tour (in Spanish or English) in a group or alone. The museum is located at the corner of Avenue Rafael Melgar and street 6 Norte, three blocks from the principal pier. It opens daily from 8am to 5pm, the admission fee is $33 pesos, children under 9 don’t pay.
Cozumel Punta Molas
En punta Molas se encuentra el faro del Norte de la isla. Para llegar a él es una travesía ya que no hay camino trazado en realidad. Lo ideal es rentar un barco o cuatrimotos, y si eres más osado puedes llegar caminando; sólo necesitas llevar suministros de comida y bebidas. La aventura bien vale el esfuerzo puesto que la zona es prácticamente virgen. Además, muy cerca de allí se encuentra el sitio arqueológico El Castillo Real, de 1,200 años de antigüedad que mira al Mar Caribe. At Punta Molas, the Northern light house of the island is located. To get there is quite an adventure as there is not really a path nor a street. The ideal is to rent a boat or an ATV (quad bike), and if you are daring you can walk there; you just need to bring enough food and water. The adventure is worth the effort as the area is practically virgin. In addition, very close you can find the archeological site El Castillo Real, which has been facing the sea for 1200.

Existen dos formas de llegar a la isla: por aire o por mar. Lo más práctico es tomar el ferry que sale desde el muelle de Playa del Carmen. Existen 2 navieras que cobran la misma tarifa y parten cada 1 o 2 horas, de 7 am a 10 pm. Con una duración de 45 minutos aprox., el viaje sencillo cuesta $ 162 pesos para adultos y $96 para los niños de 6 a 11 años; los menores de 5 años viajan gratis. También puedes comprar tu boleto más económico en internet: www.mexicowaterjets.com Si deseas ir con tu automóvil debes tomar otro barco llamado Transcaribe desde el muelle de Punta Venado (Calica), que se encuentra 8 km al sur de Playa del Carmen en el Km 282 de la carretera a Tulum. El viaje sencillo cuesta para un vehículo familiar $817 pesos (incluye al conductor) y $ 68 por pasajero adicional; menores de 12 años no pagan boleto. Consulta horarios y promociones en www.transcaribe. net. Es una muy buena opción para recorrer la isla. Si no, se puede rentar un carro en Cozumel. Cuenta también con un aeropuerto internacional, con aproximadamente 8 aerolíneas. De Cancún hay 5 vuelos diarios por Mayair (www.mayair.com.mx), $ 498 pesos para locales y U$S 46.15 extranjeros viaje sencillo, con una duración de 20 minutos. De Playa del Carmen se puede tomar un avión privado por Aerosaab (www. aerosaab.com), de 1 a 6 personas por USD 224.
HOW TO GET THERE?
There are two ways to get to the island: through the air or across the sea. The easiest way is to take the ferry that leaves from the pier in Playa del Carmen. There are two different companies that charge the same fee and leave every 1 or 2 hours from 7am to 10pm. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, a one-way-ticket costs $162 pesos for adults and $96 pesos for children from 6 to 11 years; children under 5 travel for free. If you want to bring your car you have to take another ferry called Transcaribe from the pier in Punta Venado (Calica) which is located 8 km south of Playa del Carmen at kilometer 282 on the highway to Tulum.
