SHEINBAUMATTENDSG-7 SUMMIT; MEANWHILE TRUMP LEAVESEARLY

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s participation in the 2025 G7 Summit marks a significant shift in Mexico’s foreign policy toward active diplomacy, contrasting with former President López Obrador’s lack of action in international politics. As the first Mexican leader to attend the summit, Sheinbaum used the platform to advocate for inclusive global cooperation, proposing a “Summit for Economic Well-being” involving G7 nations, Community of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (CELAC), and others.

In this sense, her presence signaled Mexico’s commitment to multilateralism, trade, and peace, reinforcing ties with leaders from Canada, India, and the EU. Meanwhile, President Trump left early due to the increasing tensions between Israel and Iran. In this sense, his early departure from the summit could underscore the declining relevance of the G7, growing US isolationism, and a shift in US Foreign Policy to deal with issues in a bilateral manner instead of advocating for multilateralism. Also, during the summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney offered an additional $2 billion CAD to Ukraine for further military aid against Russia

GLOBALAGREEMENTMEX-US

President Sheinbaum’s proposed “global agreement” with the US represents a shift in Mexico’s approach to bilateral security and cooperation. Moving away from the militarized framework of the “Plan Mérida,” which was canceled under former President López Obrador, Sheinbaum advocates for a broader strategy Her proposal to President Trump includes cooperation on migration, trade, and security, independent of the USMCA framework It also emphasizes respect for Mexican sovereignty and calls for recognition of Mexican families contributing to the US economy.

Trump expressed agreement and acknowledged the role of Mexican migrants. This approach signals a return to active diplomacy and a more constructive bilateral agenda.

US IMPOSES SANCTIONS AGAINST MEXICAN CARTEL MEMBERS

Following its February 2025 designation of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, the US imposed sanctions on five of its top leaders. This move reflects the Trump administration’s expanded strategy of treating major cartels as terrorist threats. The sanctions freeze US assets and ban business dealings with the individuals, including CJNG leader “El Mencho.” This policy marks a shift toward aggressive financial targeting of Mexican criminal organizations, aiming to dismantle their operations and increase pressure on Mexico for deeper cooperation

WORKWEEKREDUCTIONFORUMSBEGIN

The Workweek Reduction Forums held across Mexico aim to guide the implementation of a 40hour workweek, replacing the current 48-hour standard. Authorities, unions, academics, and the private sector participated, seeking a gradual, inclusive, and economically viable transition. Business leaders support the initiative in principle but stress the need for provisions specifically on extra working hours and a gradual implementation

This law proposal poses both challenges and opportunities: it may improve employee health and productivity but also demands operational adjustments, especially for SMEs. Successful implementation will require coordinated efforts, government support, and policies to prevent increased informality, ensuring a labor model that supports economic growth while enhancing quality of life for employees.
