L.A. PROTESTS ESCALATE AMID TRADE TENSIONS

The June 2025 protests in Los Angeles erupted in response to aggressive ICE raids ordered by President Trump The Mexican government expressed deep concern after 61 Mexican nationals were detained, making President Sheinbaum to defend migrant rights while denying accusations from US officials that she incited unrest.

The situation has strained US Mexico relations, just as critical negotiations over USMCA's review and trade measures. Mexico’s stance in defending its citizens abroad, combined with political rhetoric from US officials, risks positions on both sides If tensions escalate, they could have consequences on trade issues or delay progress in revising USMCA negotiations Furthermore, while Mexico calls for respectful dialogue, the fallout from the protests could complicate Sheinbaum’s discussions with Trump at the G-7 summit in Canada.

Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard warned the US that if no agreement is reached to eliminate tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminum, Mexico will impose reciprocal tariffs on U.S. steel.

Following negotiations in Washington with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Ebrard emphasized that the current 50% tariffs are unsustainable and harm both economies, especially the construction, automotive, and aerospace sectors. If not, the issue will be raised directly with President Trump during talks related to the USMCA framework.
