President Trump has announced steep new tariffs on over 20 countries beginning August 1st, unless trade deals are reached. Nations like Brazil, South Korea, and Japan face tariffs ranging from 20% to 50% Furthermore, yesterday July 10th, Trump disclosed a letter to Canada stating that a 35% tariff would be imposed on Canadian goods starting August 1st
However, Mexico has not received any tariff threats, as it has thus far complied with Trump’s trade demands, likely due to its compliance to USMCA terms and strong integration in North American supply chains. This could strengthen Mexico's trade position as global exporters seek alternatives to avoid US tariffs

President Trump has announced new tariffs targeting critical sectors. A 50% tariff on copper imports, effective August 1, comes from a Section 232 national security study highlighting copper’s essential role in semiconductors, batteries, defense systems, and green technologies Moreover, the move aims to reduce dependence on foreign sources and grow domestic copper mining and refining Also, Trump is advancing plans to impose tariffs on imported semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, following the Section 232 investigations.
On this note, Mexico as a major exporter of copper and intermediate electronic goods, these tariffs could disrupt its manufacturing supply chain, raise costs, and disincentivize future investments Under USMCA, Mexico may challenge the measures, but trade tensions could still pressure Mexican firms to diversify markets or shift production On this basis, President Sheinbaum stated that Mexico is already working on a strategy to diversify exports and make bilateral agreements.

Recent protests in Mexico City against gentrification sparked controversy due to xenophobic slogans and vandalism. Critics, including President Sheinbaum, labeled the acts as xenophobic, while activists argued they were defending the right to housing, not opposing immigration. The protests targeted rising living costs attributed to foreign remote workers and short-term rentals. Also, activists demanded government action to protect locals from displacement. On this note, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security mocked the protest to promote its “voluntary self-deportation” program

As part of President Sheinbaum’s "Plan México," the federal government launched the first 15 Polos de Desarrollo Económico para el Bienestar (PODECOBIS) to promote industrial growth, job creation, and local supply chains These designated economic zones, located across 14 states, aim to boost national content in production chains, support nearshoring strategies, and create jobs. Moreover, investors and developers operating within these zones will benefit from fiscal incentives, including deductions for asset investments and a deduction for training and innovation expenses On this basis, these policies are intended to attract both domestic and foreign investment, especially from sectors like manufacturing, logistics, pharma, automotive, and aerospace. For Mexico, the program strengthens regional economies, enhances national production capacity, and reduces import dependency, while opening major opportunities for SMEs, who will gain access to financing.

MEXICOPARTICIPATESINBRICSSUMMIT
During the 2025 BRICS summit, Mexico and Russia explored deepening bilateral cooperation, including political dialogue and expanded trade A key topic was negotiating a bilateral investment treaty offering legal protections and fiscal incentives, particularly in services Russia also proposed transferring oil and gas extraction technologies and collaborating on lithium and green energy. Moscow further suggested Mexico import Russian liquated natural gas and re-export it to Europe, bypassing EU restrictions.
While this could bring commercial benefits to Mexico, it may strain USMCA relations by raising concerns in the US over geopolitical alignment and energy trade practices involving sanctioned Russian resources Mexico, as an observer in the summit however, did not pose the same significance as in the G7 summit because it wasn't attended by Sheinbaum herself.
