Time to be SMART Tighter event budgets and continued rising costs still pose a challenge for planners. But there are many solutions to meet these challenges, from technology to disruptive suppliers. Maybe we earned it after the painful crisis following the great recession but the growth cycle we are in has been exceptionally long - the second longest ever for the US economy for example. All good things come to an end at some point and in this case, even if no one is predicting a recession, all forecasts point to a lower growth rate for 2019 and a new normal consisting of permanent disruptions. If the challenge of meeting planning used to be mostly internal (creativity, coordination, production‌) and manageable, we are faced with three key difficulties which demand an increasing ability to source and manage providers and solutions in a smart way. Let’s examine them.

cast by American Express Meetings & Events (M&E), points to budget growths in our industry of under 1%. No crisis, but no party anymore. And these budgets are even more of a challenge when costs are predicted to rise: hotel consolidation means this is a market where sellers have much power and prices will increase by more than 2% globally. Doing more with less is no novelty for experienced planners and help is at hand. As the American Express report points out, disruptive providers offer planners plenty of new options to solve this complex equation.

Rising prices First, budget management will be a challenge. The 2019 Global Meetings and Events Fore-

Are your meetings technoequipped? Second, smart sourcing is increasingly important in technology, ranked by the two reports we present in this issue as an absolutely key success factor, both to improve attendees’ experience and to manage meetings in a smarter way. recognition into meetings are becoming a new must, and a complex one. We used to source hotels and buses, we now have to source AI solutions, go figure. Risk management is a reality Third, be smart and be cautious. In this environment, managing risk is as important as ever. GDPR is definitely the key conditioning factor of this year and a new challenge in an industry in which data management has often been seen as a secondary skill. And security (both digital and in reality), as highlighted in various presentations in the IBTM World Knowledge Programme, is a key responsibility for planners, who now have to become risk management experts.

FROM THE ORGANISERS

Q&A with IBTM event directors

Danielle Curtis, exhibition director, Middle East IBTM Arabia & Arabian Travel Market

David Hidalgo show director, IBTM Americas

Nicole Ci event manager, IBTM China

Megan Oberholzer portfolio general manager - Travel, Tourism & Sports, IBTM Africa

Can you introduce us to your event? IBTM Arabia is a one-to-one community event, bringing together around 200 Hosted Buyers and suppliers each year for three days of mutually matched meetings, exciting cultural activities, networking events and inspiring educational sessions. Exhibitors typically attend from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Russia, central Asia, Georgia, Armenia and Cyprus, as well as the UAE and GCC. At our most recent event in February 2018, more than 2,700 meetings took place.

Can you introduce us to your event? We had our very first IBTM Americas in Mexico City from September 5th - 6th this year, following the amalgamation of our two American events — IBTM America and IBTM Latin America. More than 400 exhibitors took stands at the show and they were joined by a high quality group of almost 800 Hosted Buyers from across North America, Latin America and Europe. Our event is built around two days of pre-planned meetings and this year an amazing 12,500 meetings took place during the two-day event. We also have a packed schedule of more than 50 accredited Event Industry Council knowledge sessions. This year’s highlights were the Hosted Buyer tour of Mexico City, which included a guided visit to the Teotihuacan Pyramids and caves. This was followed by a welcome party at Jose Luis Cuevas, an emblematic museum of Mexico City.

Can you introduce us to your event? IBTM China is the number one show for the region’s buoyant MICE industry, bringing 4,000 global industry professionals to Beijing for two days of business meetings, a full programme of networking events and a market-leading Knowledge Programme, something that’s really important in this growing market. This year more than 300 domestic and international exhibitors from 20 countries were joined by more than 280 high calibre Hosted Buyers and 3,400 visitors. Over 6,600 pre-planned meetings happened during the event, which took place from September 12th – 13th at China National Convention Centre (CNCC) in Beijing.

Over the past two years, IBTM Africa has evolved into a high quality, content driven education programme which focuses on content that includes technology, future trends, procurement and consolidation, expert thought leadership, leveraging industry trends and the convergence of the travel and meetings industry.

Why attend? There are many destinations in the region investing heavily in facilities and infrastructure as they look to establish themselves in the international MICE market and as a result, there is a huge amount of interest in doing business in our part of the world. IBTM Arabia is the best and most established event for anyone looking to do business in the dynamic MENA region. As with all IBTM exhibitions, IBTM Arabia has a strong focus on the quality of business meetings — we use IBTM’s exclusive appointment matching system, which ensures you only meet people with whom there’s a high chance of doing business. Given the cultural importance here in forging connections before doing business, our fair is renowned for its networking and cultural events, one of the highlights of which is Discovery afternoon, usually held on the first day of the show; it is a fantastic opportunity to get to know everyone in an informal atmosphere and a good chance to explore Abu Dhabi. IBTM Arabia’s annual White Party is also a must-attend – a spectacular event with delicious food and entertainment, to be held in 2019 at the stunning Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas. IBTM Arabia 2019 takes place from March 25th – 27th at Jumeriah Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi

Why attend? The region is becoming much more prominent on the industry map — its reputation for fun, vibrancy and colour extends to the events market and makes it an exciting place to do business. IBTM Americas is the perfect showcase — it’s an inspiring event that has a real personality that’s typical of the area but most importantly, it brings together the region’s best suppliers with high quality Hosted Buyers. IBTM Americas 2019 takes place from May 29th – 30th at Centro Citibanamex in Mexico City

Why attend? It’s clear from the strong numbers of international Hosted Buyers who attended this year that Western organisers are eager for new experiences in the east and as a still-maturing market, China has massive potential. Our focus is on delivering commercial success for our delegates by continuing to provide the best environment for doing business. We work hard to ensure we attract the highest calibre Hosted Buyers and we pair them with exhibitors using our matchmaking tool. We also work with customers to ensure the event offers the best possible return on their investment. In terms of areas of focus, we continue to embrace and utilise the latest technology, which really adds value to our attendees, and we are committed to ensuring that our overall event programme provides the best platform to foster formal and informal connections. IBTM China 2019 takes place from August 28th – 29th at China National Convention Center Beijing

Registration opens in December 2018 and attendance at the conference is free of charge. Access to the event can be done via africa.wtm.com. A WTM Africa Travel Professional Badge will give attendees access to the conference on April 10th 2018 and also to all 3 days of WTM Africa from April 10th – 12th 2019.

Unleash your creativity!

Keep calm and carry on

nnovating, finding new ways to engage, to conceive products and experiences are a priority in today’s fastchanging world, yet our ways of working (and let’s face it, our meetings too) are often poor ways to stimulate the generation of ideas. Duncan Wardle, former vice-president of creativity and innovation at Disney is here to help us embed a culture of invention and creativity. He has spoken about it to dozens of audiences but also loves to train, coach and consult. “When you can be in a room with people for a day and teach them design thinking, real change happens. People learn by doing, not by listening,” he reminds us.

en Kelling, executive coach and associate director at Davies Tanner, combines tourism and hospitality experience with solid knowledge about meetings, including working on high profile occasions such as the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with VisitLondon. In his session, he will help you manage yourself in a crisis. Be prepared!

« Creativity is collective: get your group to transfer their thinking from ‘my idea’ to ‘our idea’ »

Is creativity individual or collective? If you take Disney, Marvel, Lucas Films, Pixar… creativity is undoubtedly collective. The new Star Wars was created by three people, not one. Build on the power of groups and collaboration to generate great ideas. In a conference, you can increase the energy levels and laughter to get people to create an idea together. When they transfer their thinking from ‘my idea’ to ‘our idea’, this is a very powerful moment. You can do that with two words: we often get into a ‘no, because’ mode but you can forbid these two words and ask people to say ‘yes, and’ in their interactions. This is called signalling. In its creative meetings, Pixar only lets people add to an idea, not destroy it, and the director will select ideas. Space boosts creativity. Building on this power of collaboration, space is another contributor to creativity: the Pixar campus was designed for unplanned encounters, so now you know how to plan the space of for your next event… Take time! Google gives employees 20% of their time to think about free projects. If you can’t spend 20%, spend a day a month! One small company has a breakfast once a month and asks employees to bring one example of something innovative from another industry. You would be amazed how many great ideas can come out of that.

Challenge the meetings & events industry. Think about the first and the last conferences you went to, they were probably much the same... Some tips: • Be practical, people learn by doing, not listening • Give the audience time to think. For example, every speaker should be available during the break in an inspiration lounge – people tend not to ask questions in big groups • Take into account that learning styles vary: some people learn visually, some by doing, some conceptually. Your communication has to mix audio, visual and kinaesthetic cues • Change the space. If you put people behind a table, you make them into a judge, so take the table out of the meeting room and maybe get participants to stand up and talk, this changes judgment into a conversation and they will think expansively • Play! I use energisers; 13% of the brain is conscious, and your memories are in the remaining 87%, subconscious part. Laughter opens the door to this 87%. Who are the most creative people? Kids, because they play. The more playful you can be, the more creative you will be • Avoid shame and get the introverts on board. Introverts are among the most creative people but they won’t speak in a big group, so I split people into groups of four, so they sit opposite someone and make eye contact. This is just an appetiser for a great stimulating session. Meet Duncan at “Think Different”, Wednesday, 09:00 – 10:00, Knowledge Theatre 1

What mistakes do companies make when managing the psychology of their team in a crisis? When a crisis hits, there’s usually so much to do that the wellbeing and stress levels of a team can easily get forgotten. It all starts with having good practice in place before an incident occurs; ensure great teamwork, make teams feel supported and be open and honest about how you’re feeling – that will all help you enormously in a crisis. In a world with social media, has crisis management fundamentally changed? Yes, it’s a game changer. News, opinions and criticism spread almost instantaneously and it’s difficult to ensure your voice is heard. Larger companies may have the resources to manage and respond to a crisis through social media channels but it’s a challenge for SMEs, who may not see it as a priority and are not in a position to respond quickly.

Can you give us one tip for keeping calm when your reputation is at stake? Build your mental resilience by doing something outside your comfort zone as often as possible. Everything from changing your route to work to facing up to something that really scares you will help your mind deal better with a ‘business as unusual’ situation. Meet Ken at “How to manage yourself in a crisis”, Wednesday, 10:30 – 11:30, Knowledge Theatre 1 and at “How to win more business pitches”, 13:00 – 14:00, Knowledge Theatre 2

2019: a positive but challenging year for planners We are back! A decade after the 2008 recession, the meetings industry has bounced back and settled into a new normal of steady growth. That is the conclusion of the 2019 Global Meetings and Events Forecast by American Express Meetings & Events (M&E), released in time for IBTM World.

« Commissions under pressure: between 50% (Europe) and 68% (North America) of planners foresee lower commissions as a consequence of hotel mergers and acquisitions » Europe (+0.65%): Activity across meeting types is growing, especially in Germany and Spain, and we will see more meetings and a larger number

of attendees. Modest growth in budgets will not keep up with rising hotel rates (1.6%). North America (+0.8%). Planners need to improve the attendee experience while working within budgetary constraints. The region will see small growth in the number of meetings, attendees and cost per attendee. Budgets won’t match rising hotel rates (+2.4%). Asia Pacific (+0.86%). More with less. Growth is predicted but with costs rising faster than budgets, one quarter of planners are choosing second-tier destinations. Central & South America (+0.26%). Rising activity signals a growing region. Virtual meetings are an option for budget-conscious companies, with 76% anticipating the use of virtual meeting technology will rise.

Meetings, from shortterm boost to longterm value creator

Your event security is also digital (and ever more so…)

usiness events have become much more strategic in their possible added value. Attracting events aligned with key community sectors spurs much more than an infusion of short-term cash; it can act as an economic and social catalyst to drive sustainable growth. Sherrif Karamat, PCMA’s President & CEO guides us towards this powerful change of mindset.

ecurity has become a huge issue for event planners, a basic requirement of professionalism. But as CEO of Expocad Rich Stone says, our security is not only about dogs and security guards, it is increasingly digital.

B

How would you summarise the change of mindset about meetings? Yesterday’s meetings were viewed as an activity that took place in a particular moment, with the attention focused on their execution; in some industries they were seen as expendable if economic times were difficult. Success was judged by number of attendees and short-term tactical objectives. Today, meetings are not a point in time and they are not necessarily face-to-face; they are a community with shared beliefs and purpose that meets in multi-modal channels to achieve outcomes – some are immediate and others are longer term. Meetings that are not purpose-driven will struggle to engage audiences. At PCMA, we are creating a global movement around the power of meetings to effect economic and social progress, organisational success and personal and professional development.

An example of this new value of meetings? Meetings bring the obvious value we know such as creating employment in the hospitality industry. They also allow organisations to develop their employees, support engagement and develop the sales pipeline. In the association world, it still represents a significant revenue source. However, meetings are doing much more – they are being used as a major source for continuing education. They are also taking a more strategic role in bringing community stakeholders together such as researchers, incubators, businesses, governments, economic developments, associations, etc. to collaborate on important issues. As a result, meetings are becoming a catalyst for strategic outcomes. Meet Sherrif at “Driving economic and social prosperity through business events”, Wednesday, 16:45 – 17:45, Knowledge Theatre 3

S

We tend to think of security as something physical rather than digital… Can you give examples of technology which helps avoid risks at events? In the digital context of security, we talk of data and malware protection, etc. Also, there is a digital presence in physical security: facial recognition to call out a potential physical threat is one example; another usage is listening to social media – organisers need to listen to those who may carry a grudge against an attendee or exhibitor… Should there be a tech expert in the process of security planning? Security experts need to have their feet in both camps. A holistic approach to security must include technical knowledge, even though most organisers can’t afford to have a specialist in each area of expertise. The legal concept is duty of care, the responsibility of the organiser to provide the safest possible environment for attendees, exhibitors, guests and sponsors within reason.

Continued from page 1 Oh, and by the way, all the traditional skills – creativity, communication, coordination, production – are still necessary. And the good news: suppliers are planners’ best partners in this challenge. Go around the show, connect with the players who will enable you to succeed in this new normal of lower growth, challenging budgets and risks aplenty. Definitely time to smarten up!

What keeps you up at night?

We caught up with some of the meeting professionals on the show floor… Riine Tiigi - Estonian Convention Bureau As a destination, there is a lot of competition. There are so many emerging destinations, new convention bureaux... how do you stand out in such a crowded market? This is why we went for the “go wild” slogan, you need to be brave and adventurous if you want to stand out.

Mohamed Alwasaeibi - Cvent Because of technology, we are able to reach numerous people from so many backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles... the main challenge is keeping everybody happy! How can you, with one experience that puts a lot of people together in one place at one specific moment, satisfy and make all of them happy at the same time? This is why technology and trends, like personalisation of experiences, are becoming so important in the events industry.

Paqui García Durán - Centro náutico de L’Estartit It’s our first time at IBTM World and even though we are a small town in Catalunya, we are here because we think the meetings market is growing and we could expand our business during the low season. The world of meetings keeps evolving and growing and this does not only affect big companies and destinations, it also affects us, small towns, venues or brands. Of course, this means competition is extremely strong.

Juan Martínez - Feria Valencia The meetings market is growing and the forecasts for the next year are good. The future is in technology events, more than just using it, the challenge is to attract this leading sector with events such as the web Summit, start-ups meetings, MWC and the FTTH Congress, there is alot of potential there.

Raúl de Gregorio - Conventia Everything is growing and so are prices, which I think it is good news. The challenge now is not to get into price wars as it is important to charge accordingly. Keiko Tsutsumi - Metlife There are so many beautiful choices but if I present them to the management team, they say, how much it is going to cost? They just see numbers.

Tech can help in managing security… but also pose a risk, can’t it? Yes, you are right. There are many ways in which meeting technology can be used by a group with ill intent. Anticipating potential scenarios is the first step. What technology is the event using? In what ways can it be compromised or used outside the normal realm? And what can be done within reason also matters. Does GDPR help or hinder this concept of digital tools to help manage security? Both. We have become complacent about where our information resides, who owns it and how it is used. It is when that information is used by an organisation that we didn’t choose to share our information with, or when our information is used against us. The other side of GDPR is the potential loss of evidence. If someone has done something wrong, they can have their information deleted, making it difficult for authorities to recover it for an investigation. Meet Rich at “Event security – tech that helps us think about the unthinkable”, Wednesday, 16:45 – 17:45, Knowledge Theatre 2 Javier Codazzi - Wedgewood Spain It is getting back to last-minute decisions, where meetings are planned in two months, which makes it hard for us to make any forecasts. There is still volume in business but the margins are smaller as we see suppliers are also going direct to the end clients. Paul Tessitore - AMEX Meeting & Events USA (Nueva York) Prices are rising above budgets and and planners have to create more value-added meetings with less money, and catch up with technologies, social media, apps, experiences... Martin van Keken, Muka Productions The key thing is to get standardised information on hotels and convention centres; even two 5-star hotels in one chain can be noticeably different. And attitudes are still standardised, “let’s do a meeting and they don’t look at what is possible in the venue.

INDUSTRY & TRENDS

Still strong, and increasingly tech-powered

H

ot off the press! The most thorough – and muchawaited – annual barometer of our industry is back: the IBTM World Trends Watch Report by Alistair Turner & Rob Davidson takes a forensic look at our industry, across sectors, countries and types of events. The full report, which was unveiled yesterday, delves deeper into wider technological issues from outside the industry such as personalisation and automation.

Wednesday November 28th

ICCA highlights the trend of ‘Beyond Bidding.’ Where historically, destinations’ role was tourism and logistics led, now they support events through their intellectual and economic capital, generating knowledge creation and transfer. Incentive trends in a nutshell according to SITE: • Two-thirds of corporate bookers of incentive travel include meetings in their incentive programmes • Wellness is the new golf • Growth in all-inclusive destinations, partly to reduce costs How destinations are selected for incentives, according to C&IT • Political stability and safety (66%) • Value for money (65%) • Service quality (59%)

And the verdict? Despite ongoing economic and geopolitical instability, the future looks bright, thanks in part to the relentless march of technological innovation and its application in the meetings industry. Despite the threat of protectionism, the authors remain ‘guardedly optimistic’ about the economy. Overall predictions have been moderated, showing some clouds on the horizon but the IMF still expects a solid 3.7% growth for 2019. It is a time for the brave: as covered in last year’s report, instability is the new normal and while ecological, political and economic risks continue to spring up around the world, global growth figures remain positive. Regarding sectors, the banking industry has regained its health and the mood

is positive; construction has grown by 3.2% this year; the pharmaceutical sector is being disrupted by trends such as wearables and self-diagnosis but is dynamic and solid; ICT growth is increasing by 4.3% in 2018 and shows no sign of resting, stimulated by IoT, 5G, blockchain and AI; and finally, automotive is facing huge uncertainty but continues to flourish, with a 4% expansion in 2018 and 2019. Association meetings are strong, especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and the exponential growth recorded by ICCA indicates increasing maturity in the sector. Meanwhile, the trend towards more meetings but smaller and more frequent endures. Finally, the merging of ITC with

pharma, banking (FinTech) and automotive has seen new communities being established and cities are positioning themselves as centres of excellence in various fields to bring these communities together. Incentive travel is also healthy and SITE highlights that budgets and the number of incentive travel trips being booked are both up in 2018, making the most of this great tool to build relationships between management and employees. Almost 70% of buyers said their programmes achieve business objectives but the problem with this level of activity is that the industry wrestles with supply and demand dynamics that impact on profitability.

Top trends for 2019 Wellness Experience Role of the Millennials Security And for 2019, frankly, things still look good; 63% of respondents to MPI’s Meetings Outlook Report (Fall 18) showed great business confidence and as we saw, all predictions by industries and types of events are on the positive side. So much optimism… should we be worried? Don’t be complacent! say the authors. Despite the good news, the report highlights that with many experts concerned about an economic slowdown, the ability for the meetings industry to withstand a downturn in fortunes could be limited. Only the paranoid survive, as Andy Grove said. Our industry has always stood out for its adaptability and this skill is as vital as ever.

More profound incentives C&IT highlights Transformational Travel, which reflects consumer travel trends and shows a move to enriching, cultural experiences, including ethical changes. And the Incentive Research Foundation’s 2018 Trends Study finds a move towards wellness: “38% of respondents include wellness/wellbeing components in their programme”

Kobe events take to the great outdoors From Russia with love The Russian Convention Bureau (RCB) was established in November 2017 by the Roscongress Foundation, the Russian Export Center (REC), International Foundation of Technology and Investment (IFTI) and R&C Market Research Company. The key goals of the RCB are to provide a one-stop shop to international event planners, to attract international events to Russia and to elevate Russia’s status to preferred event destination. Seoul MICE Week tackles MICE strategy From November 22nd, Seoul MICE Week saw seven days of online and offline meetings industry related events such as Seoul MICE Forum, briefing sessions on available support for domestic associations and academic societies; the annual meeting for members of the Seoul MICE Alliance, a public-private partnership between the city of Seoul and companies in the MICE industry, plus a mentoring day for students interested in the MICE industry. This year, under the slogan Designing the future of MICE, Seoul MICE Week explored how the capital will become an even stronger meetings destina-

World Cup raised Russia’s profile as a MICE destination and the country has the infrastructure to host large events, with some 3,500 venues and more than 7,500 professional meetings organisers. “Russia offers great value for money – the cost of staging B2B events is much lower here than in the rest of Europe,” said director of the Russian Convention Bureau Alexey Kalachev. tion in advance of the expansion of the meetings cluster into the Jamsil district, expected by 2025. Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Korea International Trade Association and organised by the Seoul Tourism Organisation, the fifth edition was designed to increase local awareness of the industry. The event kicked off with one-to-one table appointments between 30 domestic associations and academic societies planning to hold events and over 70 Seoul MICE Alliance members The business sessions were followed by the Seoul MICE Forum, where keynote speakers and panellists discussed strategies for ensuring global competitiveness. The Seoul MICE Alliance has grown from 47 members when it started in 2010 to 299 members today. “Seoul MICE Week is a great opportunity for experts from related industries to gather together, share information, and strengthen the local MICE network. We will continue to support Seoul in its efforts to become the world’s best MICE city,” said director-general of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Tourism and Sports Bureau Joo Yong-tae. Stand G60

Inspired by the original Diner en Blanc in Paris, the Kobe White Dinner for the fifth time graced the city’s streets and hosted some 650 guests. Roads were closed to traffic, transforming the city centre into a huge outdoor party venue and both guests and tables were dressed in white. More energetic was the Japanese Orthopaedic Association’s soccer tournament, hosted by Noevir Stadium Kobe in May. This is one of a number of occasions the stadium will host as part of a desire to work with the meetings industry in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup 2019, the 2020 Olympics and the World Masters Games. Kobe Convention Bureau plans to create programmes based on sporting events, making the most of these Golden Sporting Years, which will act as an excellent showcase for Japan’s event organisation skills. The opening of ICC Wales in 2019 puts Wales on the map as a challenger destination for international business events and also next year, the Welsh Government’s Business Events team’s Year of Discovery will champion the country’s key economic sectors, which include Life Sciences, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Financial and Professional Services, and Technology. It follows this year’s five-point plan to accelerate Wales’ growing share of the global MICE market. This includes the appointment of head of business events for Visit Wales Heledd Williams, attendance at national and international shows, a coordinated approach to promoting Wales, an education programme for Visit Wales partners and exploiting Wales’ reputation for hosting major global events such as the Champions League Final and the Volvo Ocean Race. Stand G35 Bristol has risen from 11th to 5th place in the annual British Meetings & Events Industry Survey, making it one of the UK’s most popular MICE destinations. It follows London, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh. This success is partly due to new or improved venue space in the city, including the new Aerospace Bristol museum; and following a £45 million transformation at Ashton Gate Stadium, bringing new conference facilities, plans for £100 million indoor sports arena and convention centre have been announced. De Vere Tortworth Court Hotel and Mercure Grand Hotel have undertaken significant investment and there is more to come. Stand G30

Strasbourg has unveiled the plan for the city’s new exhibition centre, part of a bigger Exhibition Park and designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates. The park is part of the Strasbourg 2030 project to reorganise the European Quarter of the city and completion is due in 2022. The building will largely be made of wood, it will have large windows and a rooftop terrace. The location has been carefully selected to allow collaboration with the Strasbourg Convention and Exhibition Centre, to be close to the city centre and to have direct access from the motorway. Cologne capitalises on conference success Cologne is celebrating a record breaking 2017, with more than 4 million delegates attending 49,521 events, which shows an increase of 4.7% and 1.8% respectively over the previous year. These figures come from the TagungsBarometer (Conference Barometer), a regular survey of convention centres, conference hotels and event locations, conducted by the Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) in cooperation with the Europäisches Institut für TagungWirtschaft (EITW). A reflection of this success was the increase in the number of venues to 174, including the opening of a conference hotel and four event locations. Conventions and congresses accounted for 71% of the events held in Cologne

in 2017, led by corporate business, which increased its share from 76% to 81%. Banks and insurance companies are the most important sectors, followed by medicine and pharmaceuticals. The Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and since it was founded, the number of events held in Cologne has grown by 20%. The anniversary issue of Meeting Point Cologne 2018/19 has been redesigned and includes lively stories about Cologne and its business community. The directory focuses on innovation and science as key factors influencing the establishment of new congresses. Also celebrating a 10th anniversary is Gamescom, which this year, came to Cologne for the 10th consecutive year. In 2017, business tourism increased by 18% over the previous year, partly thanks to the rallying of professional associations and the public sector to attract international events, and incentive trips, and academic and scientific congresses also brought more visitors to the city. Tania Baumann, chief operating officer of the World Energy Council What do you mostly look for when participating in IBTM World? First, destinations for our triennial World Energy Congress or our annual World Energy Week. We focus on establishing contacts that can support our national committees in bidding for the congress and in understanding which destinations would be ideal for future events; and we want feedback on our tendering process to ensure that it is an attractive proposition for bidders. We also take the opportunity to look at technology and experience improvements.

What events do you mostly organise? A major four-day, multitrack congress for the global energy community, with C-suite and ministers in attendance, as well as energy leaders and practitioners. It also includes an exhibition, hosted side-events and social events. And we hold annual public and private events for high-level energy leaders and the community of the World Energy Council, involving a public programme of conferences and roundtables, plus private, invitation-only meetings. What is changing in your events? The ability to convene is an important asset to any organisation, so it’s crucial to ensure the experience balances opportunities for engagement with the content and the peer group; attendees always appreciate the opportunity for engagement. Live polling of the audience in a dynamic setting is interesting because it enables immediate interaction with speakers/panelists.

Monaco’s moniker majors on green commitment Monaco’s green credentials go way back to before environmental awareness reached today’s levels: in 1906, Albert I created the first foundation dedicated to research and protection of marine life. This lives on: Albert II created a foundation to address the planet’s environmental problems; in addition, the Principality has won the Green Palm for Europe’s best carbon balance sheet and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In our industry, “climate change increasingly affects business decisions,”

said head of the convention bureau Sandrine Camia; the bureau helps organisers green their meetings and the destination has someone dedicated to sustainable tourism. The beauty of a small place is that it is easier to align the values of all internal players, so that green commitment permeates all protagonists: 82% of hotel rooms are eco-certified, the Grimaldi Forum has been ISO 14001 certified since its creation and is now installing photovoltaic panels to power the centre, the Monte-Carlo Bay and the Monte -Carlo Beach have received the Green Globe Gold Award, the Fairmont Monte-Carlo offers bio local food, collection of excess food from events and charity-based activities; and The Metropole has banned plastic straws. This even filters down to the small details such as SBM electric vehicles, nine types of trash collection, sustainable flipchart markers.. To promote this culture, Monaco has focused its marketing message on its commitment to things green and is presenting the B2B campaign at IBTM World, “Monaco, a country where event is in harmony with environment”. Hilton targets Big Five Hilton has announced an initial investment of US$1 million in sustainable travel and tourism in Africa and will focus on five key areas. Hilton’s Big Five embraces training and apprenticeship programmes to build a strong talent pipeline and tackle challenges for youth, including underemployment; and the expansion of existing partnerships and the creation of new alliances to help Hilton achieve its goal to reduce water consumption by 50% and start 20 water projects in at-risk communities by 2030. In addition, Hilton will provide training and auditing to mitigate human trafficking, alongside engagement with local NGOs to address the social challenges in local communities. It will create partnerships to build local entrepreneurs’ capacity to deliver high quality goods and services, and integrate them into Hilton’s supply chain; and finally, it will promote responsible wildlife-based tourism, according to the WTTC Buenos Aires Declaration on Travel & Tourism and Illegal Wildlife Trade. This is in line with the recent launch of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 goals to double its investment in social impact

and halve its environmental footprint across the world. “Hilton is committed to creating a positive social and environmental impact in every community where we operate. Africa is an incredibly diverse continent, with equally diverse challenges and opportunities – and as we continue to grow in the region, we are focused on doing so in a way that promotes sustainable travel and tourism,” said president and CEO Chris Nassetta. Hilton’s 41 operating hotels in Africa have carried out 460 volunteering projects since 2012. These include soft skills training developed with the International Youth Foundation, to build competencies such as problem-solving, team work and leadership skills, benefiting some 800 young people across the continent; and Soap4Hope in partnership with Diversey, bringing soap recycling to communities in need – since 2014, more than 39 tons of soap have been recycled by 14 participating Hilton properties, creating more than 7,000 bars of soap per month. Show the UN our industry can help save the world… For anyone doubting the importance of sustainability for the future of our industry, consider this: in October, an IPCC report for policy makers suggested ‘replacing business travel with video conferencing’. Our industry has to take seriously its impact both ethically and as a commercial imperative. If we want to be recognised as a force for positive change, let’s think big – and big means the United Nations. So in an initiative coordinated by Positive Impact, this year four delegates from various UN bodies will attend IBTM World to learn more about the role of events in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; they enable ideas sharing, stimulate innovation and collaboration, and are a great way to bring about positive change. The UN SDGs are influencing global business and government attitudes and provide an opportunity for our industry to demonstrate the business value of events. The UN attendees will be contributing their expertise to educational sessions on the sustainability stand and in the main area. Meet Fiona at “What does a sustainable event really mean?”, Wednesday, 15:30-16:30, Knowledge Theatre 2 She will also be presenting a white paper with the top 10 trends

Our industry will increasingly offer more than rooms and venues – “if you bring your event here, this is the legacy you will create”, will be the new sales approach • Circular economy. This is a circular approach rather than the linear creation of a product that is used once and then ends up in landfill • Plastic. Plastic will continue to be a pressing issue and this will apply to events. The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games April 2018 was the first major sports event that did not feature any balloons or plastic straws, and signs are pointing to event attendees expecting more than the now obvious straw and balloon ban • Measurement. It is not the usual practice to measure our impact and we need to do this to understand where we are falling short and where we are successfully addressing challenges. For example, how many people will have multiple meetings at IBTM world and meet new people because we are in a face to face environment?

OD Hotels’ sustainable ethics are evident in facilities such as rooftop and vertical gardens, solar panels, efficient building insulation and innovative temperature controls which help reduce energy consumption by up to 35%; preferred lighting is sunlight. Other environmentally friendly factors include geothermal systems to provide heating, construction using local materials and cuisine that largely comprises local produce. The group is to launch an e-mobility plan for guests. Stand M27

ICCA plans for the future At the 57th ICCA Congress held in Dubai this month, James Rees was elected president. “I will be a true advocate for our business, a champion of our sector and ensure that ICCA’s voice is heard by government, in a language they understand. It will be an honour and privilege to serve as your president,” he said. The four-day conference programme was put together by ICCA and convention bureau Dubai Business Events and attracted 1,156 experts from 79 countries, a record number of delegates for any ICCA congress held outside Europe. “The Middle East is an important growth area, we now have a permanent regional director on our board and this is our first annual congress in the Middle East,” said president Nina Freysen-

Pretorius. The 60th ICCA congress will take place in 2021 in Cartagena, Colombia. And FIEXPO Latin America has been chosen as the first ICCA Language Champion, a move in the direction of providing multilingual services to members, starting with Spanish translations of the most important advisory publications and digital resources. “We hope this is the beginning of similar partnerships for other languages,” said ICCA interim CEO Dennis Speet. And last but not least, ICCA gave an Inspirational ICCA Women award to ten women from the association’s global community in recognition of their impressive contributions to the meetings industry. The accolades were conceived and presented by president Nina Freysen-Pretorius, who is the second female ICCA president and finishes her tenure this year. In recognition of industry partners’ support during her term, she asked association leaders worldwide to nominate women they considered to be the unsung heroes, leaders, innovators, pioneers and advocates of business events. 2018. This brings with it the challenge to attract and retain talent: training, pay and career plans will be on their agenda. Logically, the move to a sellers’ market sees suppliers increasing their prices by an average of 5.6%. Beyond market health, the central theme of the study is the move towards a more strategic approach to events. Companies are not looking for mere moments of communication, motivation and training to participants in a room; their new priorities include data capture, knowledge of their audience, content generation to be broadcast beyond the event... An event is now an all-embracing powerful action, beyond the limits of the venue and D-day. This is good news, it points to events’ being more in line with wider business goals and bringing higher added value. Now, the rest of the industry has to follow suit! Stand B84

New research from DMC Pacific World has identified emerging MICE destinations and those to look out for, the results of which it is announcing at IBTM World. WELLNESS

Wellness springs to life in Moravia When Doctor František Veselý took over the declining spa of Luhačovice in 1902, he prophesied that the place would become a natural centre of Moravia. His prophecy came true and 116 years later, it endures. The spa is still visited for its healing qualities, which are fed by 16 curative springs in Luhačovice Valley, Moravia.

Treatments at the spa are rejuvenating but those looking for something more energetic could head to the nearby Jurkovič Dam to enjoy water sports, in-line skating, cycling and hiking. Luhačovice is situated on the edge of the Bílé Karpaty protected area, which surrounds the Carpathian Mountains; and the nearby royal town of Uherský Brod thrived during the 16th century and has kept its period charm. Come by and say cheers to all the Danes at stand E25 from 18.00 and together we’ll celebrate Tivoli Garden’s 175th anniversary. That’s 175 years of fun, happiness and hygge. Can you imagine what that has done to us Danes...?  www.businesseventsdenmark.com  Business Events Denmark  BizEventsDK
