VALLADOLID: Founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo (the cousin) to subjugate the indomitable, warlike Cupul Maya. In 1848 the defiant, brave Cupuls rebelled against the injustices of the time in the Caste War between the Maya and the ruling classes. Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship. Local dishes include a famous sausage, pork roast and escabeche sauce. Colonial architecture dots the city: ex-CONVENT OF SAN BERNARDINO (1553) built over an enormous cenote, has a stunning carved wood and gold leaf altarpiece with a 400-year old image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. SAN GERVASIO CHURCH in the city center has imposing towers and architecture, cannons used in the Caste War are on display. MUSEUM OF POPULAR ART: embroidered clothing exhibits. S. The SACÍ CENOTE is a clean, partially-covered cenote with lookouts, diving platforms, stairs for swimming access and a comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy the magical surroundings. Valladolid’s colonial buildings, beautiful streets and warm people are typical of provincial Yucatan, and of Mexico. Its privileged location, near Chichen, Ek-Balam, Cancún and Tulum, and its people’s welcoming attitude make Vallodolid well worth discovering. EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court. The tomb of the king “Ukit Kan Lel Tok” has shell and conch pendants, necklaces, a scepter and a knife. The structure is also full of passageways connecting the rooms, reminiscent of the secret tunnels of Medieval European castles. Look for the winged figures that are very similar to angels. (El agua de las golondrinas): CENOTES en la hacienda Chunkanán donde abordará un “truck” (tranvía de vía angosta tirado por un caballo) y tendrá una de las experiencias más inolvidables de su vida. A través de 7 Km., gozará la aventura de transitar por abundante maleza, flanqueada por plantíos de henequén; cada vuelta de rueda y golpeteo de uniones de rieles, lo llevará al siglo XIX henequenero y a millones de años, al encontrar formaciones únicas en el mundo, los CENOTES, Dzonot (cavidad con agua), vitales por la fresca agua, sagrado acceso al inframundo espiritual. “CHELENTÚN”, caverna con acceso directo y fácil y profundidad máxima de 18 m; nade en una bella “ALBERCA CUBIERTA” con techo de estalactitas. “CHACSICNICHE” (árbol de la hormiga roja), de acceso difícil y más recomendado para buceo.
