EARTH CLUB

All About the Club

Earth Club is a small student-led club that focuses on cleaning our campus and enjoying nature through hikes and other activities. The club meets weekly during lunch in Mrs. Mcquitty’s classroom on Tuesdays. Members can choose to meet each Friday in the morning and spend an hour cleaning our campus for service hours and donuts! The club offers other volunteer opportunities and is a unique chance for students to choose the level of their involvement within the community. Through Earth Club students can earn easy volunteer hours and form connections with local nonprofits such as Tree-Penish, the Beaver Brigade, and EarthShine.

Recently, the club participated in the second annual Beaver Festival in San Luis Obispo. This Festival was hosted by the Beaver Brigade in an effort to raise awareness for the importance of beavers in our rivers and streams. Through a collection of interactive activities, booths, and presentations the Beaver Brigade aimed to inform attendees of the many environmental benefits that stem from protecting beavers as well as their habitats. Earth Club volunteered for the entirety of the festival, overseeing a crafting booth where children could make their own cardboard beaver tails and beaver puppets.

President Tilly Ralston

Tilly Ralston, Earth Club President, has always loved nature. She initially joined the club in her freshman year to help clean our campus and volunteer her time to make our community a cleaner, greener place. This year she was elected as president. Tilly says that this role is so important to her because it’s an easy way for her to have a direct impact on our school and be a part of important decisions around campus. As president, Tilly is able to act as an ambassador to local non-profits and volunteer the club for large community events.

Through Earth Club Tilly has opened the school to a new non-profit partnership with Tree-Plenish and hopes to connect with other local organizations, such as EarthShine.

Tree-Plenish

Tree-Plenish is a non-profit organization founded with the goal of empowering students to create a more sustainable and equitable future through community tree-planting. In partnership with Tree-Plenish, students host community tree planting events with the goal of offsetting the amount of energy their school uses. Students calculate a number that comes directly from a Tree-Plenish Carbon Calculator that combines the square footage of the school and the community’s CO2 emission rate to find the school’s sales goal.

For the first time, Atascadero HIgh School’s Earth Club has partnered with Tree-Plenish to sell saplings throughout the Atascadero community. The club offers a choice of three saplings: a Picual Olive, Royal Blenheim Apricot, and Santina Cherry. Members of the community can also volunteer money or help plant the saplings themselves. The saplings are all chosen to survive well in a California climate and will be distributed for planting on the 20th of April.

Liam Mclain

Liam Mclain is a senior who had the opportunity to potray the character of Willy Wonka in this year's spring musical.

"From the moment I first heard we were putting on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I made it my mission to sevure the role." Liam is extremely gladhe did because getting to play Willy Wonka was a blast for him.

Jonah Sullivan

"Getting to play a psychotic choclatier with subtle truama around all of my friends was a dream come true."

He told us that working with Volpa is always a treat for him because she has so much trust in the cast she works with. She even let Liam block one of his songs choreography.

Liam is glad he got to have this

Jonah Sullivan played as Charlie Bucket in the Willy Wonka production. When he heard about the show he had no idea who he wanted to play. "I was still so happy about the amazing run of Cowboy Noir and his Gang of Misfits, I just knew I wanted to be in another production with all of the amazing people I got to know."

He had a great experience trying to get into the character. There were some lows since it was his first time playing a part this big.

"When we got into the final stratch of rehearsals, I got reminded of why I joined theater. That feeling of all of your work coming together, as a tech or as an actor. When people are all complementing one another."

Sure there were a lot of ups and downs, but that's just life, and in the end he is really proud that I can say He was part of all of this!
