Navigating Boundaries The 7 Boundaries Physical Boundaries define personal limits regarding your physical space and body. Building this metaphorical wall and conveying your conditions clearly to family, friends, and acquaintances gives you the power to control your interactions with others by defining your right not to be touched and the limits of your privacy. Clarifying the types of physical touch you are comfortable with among friends is crucial to forming a friendship that values your unique demands. Additionally, establishing physical boundaries for yourself can allow you to meet vital physical needs, such as sleeping an adequate amount of time or eating at healthy intervals. Overall, creating and communicating essential physical boundaries allows you to feel respected in your own body and acknowledge your own body by accounting for your unique needs. Sexual Boundaries are essential for high schoolers to establish. A healthy relationship founded

on the vital principle that you and your partner feel comfortable sharing and respecting each other’s limits is the goal. These boundaries include your right to consent, honesty when discussing sexual history, and comfort in discussing your sexual needs with your partner. In a relationship, this may look like respecting your partner’s dislike of PDA or not pushing sexual intimacy without consent. Generally, sexual boundaries define what kind of sexual touch and intimacy you want, how often, when, where, and with whom. Emotional and Mental Boundaries protect our private thoughts and emotions. By setting these limitations, we can validate the need for emotional privacy and keep our feelings from being criticized or invalidated. Establishing clear emotional and mental boundaries lets other people know how much they should confide in you and how much you are willing to share in return. This boundary is important,

especially with close friends or family members, because it reinforces personal accountability. Rather than assuming responsibility for others’ emotions, this boundary declares that only your emotions are your responsibility. So, in conclusion, creating healthy emotional and mental boundaries can cultivate respect in relationships and reinforce your privacy. Spiritual and Religious Boundaries are vital to uphold, especially when considering conflicting beliefs. By creating spiritual and religious limits, we can safeguard our privilege to believe in what we want, worship freely or in whatever method we wish, and practice our beliefs without fear of belittlement or judgment. By respecting each others’ beliefs, we create a mutual relationship in which both sides of a conversation can recognize another viewpoint. Respecting other religious or spiritual boundaries does not suggest assimilating to their beliefs. Instead, it simply implies an acknowledgment of opposing or new beliefs. Financial and Material Boundaries protect your right to do with your money as you wish. These boundaries are relevant to high schoolers especially. By establishing this boundary, perhaps within your friend group, you can inform others how you plan to spend your money and emphasize a situation that may bring you discomfort. Comfortably managing your money may include refusing to give or loan your possessions when it is not explicitly agreed upon or demanding to be paid fair amounts by an employer. Establishing this specific boundary is crucial, both in your place of employment and in situations where you may feel pressured to spend money.
Time Boundaries may sound slightly redundant or self-explanatory, but outlining how you spend your time is beneficial. Clearly defining this specific boundary can protect you from agreeing to situations that make you uncomfortable. Properly managing your time can help to develop efficient behaviors or force you to commit personal time to previously arranged situations, such as a family dinner. Setting boundaries regarding time can be especially meaningful when considering overworking, either in school or a job. Simply put, this can also help you avoid wasted time. Non-negotiable Boundaries are an all-encompassing protection that extends to values you will not compromise on. These types of boundaries are vital in establishing relationships, starting new jobs, or dealing with family circumstances. They usually involve hard decisions regarding safety issues, such as physical violence, emotional abuse, drug or alcohol use, faithfulness, and life-threatening health issues. However, because these boundaries generally pertain to sensitive topics, it is important not to label all of our boundaries as non-negotiable. Otherwise, we may risk over-protecting ourselves. Non-negotiable boundaries are final, so by setting them, you must commit to upholding them unconditionally, as it is entirely counter-productive to set non-negotiable boundaries that you do not enforce.
Hopefully, by applying these fundamental boundaries to your dayto-day, you can promote proper time management, respect others’ beliefs and personal space, and establish your goals and limits.

Introduction To Toxic Boundaries: You may ask yourself why some people tend to set toxic boundaries with themselves, and those around them. A way of defining a toxic boundary is the establishment of barriers to keep people or one specific person out of our life without making room for ourselves. If you have not noticed by now, this is an unhealthy method of setting boundaries. Most of us struggle with boundaries because we, as a society, tend to see things at face value and with the intent of communicating in a peaceful manner. I mean, we often hardly anticipate that someone would mistreat us. However, the majority of the time, we see these toxic boundaries revolving around toxic relationships. Developing and maintaining relationships has to be one of the most challenging things that
reasons why we end up building toxic boundaries, is because there us often a lack of respect for our own privacy. Our needs for space and privacy should always be respected by ourselves and others. However, when a person lacks respect, not only does it tell us where their head is at, but it also tells us a lot about what they value. Nevertheless, it is quite difficult to understand, and grap onto the concept of our boundaries. When trying to get rid of our toxic boundaries, always identify your core values, find time for yourself, stay calm, and maintain your patience.

In a sense, yes, toxic boundaries are basically built thanks to our toxic relationships, but the true conflict is within us. For example, one of the biggest
TOXIC BOUNDARIES
I n t e r v ie w wi th P r e s id en t S e bas ti an Marano What has been the best part about being the president of this club? “To me, the best part about being a club president is getting to know each and every one of the members through meetings and activities. Over the last three years, I’ve been able to become friends with many students of diverse backgrounds and have had many memorable experiences with peers from across the school.” What is a memorable moment you made while being in this club? “The most memorable moment I’ve had from this club was at our Homecoming Dance food stall. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of members who volunteered to work at the booth to help cook and serve food. For many of our younger members, it was their first high school dance experience, and yet they chose to spend a majority of their night with club members. A few officers and I stayed at the booth the whole night and watched as our members took turns to go enjoy the dance. I believe that it was a great night for all who attended that night, and I was overjoyed that our club contributed to the fun memories made by our members.”
The dance being learned here is called Tinikling. Here, we have two people moving two bamboo poles back and forth along the ground. While doing so, they are also tapping the poles together to create a musical rhythm. They do this while one or two dancers step over and in between the poles in the dance. This dance is commonly performed during special occasions such as Filipino Independence Day. 7
Filipino Cultural Appreciation Club Abo ut t h e C lu b The Filipino Culture Appreciation Club is a culture awareness club that was created in 2021. It was founded by the club president, Sebastian Marano. Sebastian, along with other students on campus, had a goal of creating a club that would increase cultural awareness and to celebrate other diverse cultures students are a part of. With that, they were able to make a club that provides a friendly and accepting space for students of all backgrounds. During the club’s time on campus, Sebastian feels that he and his officers were able to accomplish their goal of creating a club where students can feel accepted and valued. They have also been successful in being able to celebrate Filipino culture along with the heritages of the other members. Students in the club learn about different traditions and history behind Filipino culture. Throughout the years, members have learned various songs and dances
that relate to Filipino traditions. A member from the club, Joulian Rebosura states, “The club has allowed me to gain new friendships and grow some that I previously had. As a whole, it has helped me feel more involved with school and it’s something that relates to me personally. As a freshman, it was challenging thinking about what clubs to join in high school and Filipino Club has really done a great job introducing me to school activity and I am really thankful for being a part of it.” .
