The new year. A chance to make resolutions and huge steps in self improvement. But, without our values, how can we achieve our goals? Our core values are base principles that guide daily choices and inform our unique perspective or belief system. Often these values are formed at an early age, influenced by the people surrounding us: family, friends, and mentors. However, we are not bound to our values; they can change as we experience new situations, and as we adapt and evolve to overcome new stressors, such as work and school. By developing and applying our values to daily life we can identify our immediate priorities and measure relative “success.” Furthermore, these values can help us determine goals, or resolutions to live by or grow into. Identifying our values and aligning them with our goals is essential to developing an “ideal self.” When clearly identify our values, we can easily consult our core beliefs to make decisions about how to live our lives, and answer important questions about our goals. Setting goals helps to build positive behaviors that can turn into healthy habits. More simply, goals can motivate us

personal values “ Your are a central part of who you are – and who you want to be.
“
When determining our goals and resolutions we need to consider three main motivating factors carefully: what we wish to accomplish (mastery goal), if we are aiming to do better than our peers (performance-approach goal), or if we are avoiding doing worse than our peers (performance-avoidance goal). Classifying these three approaches can help uncover the motives behind our goals, and allow us to understand if they are feasible, or even reasonable. Finally, once we have identified our core values, examined what we wish to accomplish, and classified our goal-type, we can craft the perfect New Year’s resolution. Our resolutions should not be simple or lofty goals– instead they should encourage us to continue healthy behaviors, transform undesired attributes, or overcome personal challenges. Considering these steps, and crafting the perfect New Years resolution allows for the creation of an achievable and accountable goal for the rest of the year.

Interview with President: My introduction to FNL happened during the club exposition at lunch in my freshman year. My friend and I were just walking through getting free candy that clubs were giving away, we stopped at FNL, which caught our attention. Without much thought, we decided to sign up, not fully expecting to stick with it. However, this decision turned out to be the beginning of a significant involvement in the club. I decided to join FNL primarily due to the influence of a senior, Megan van Allen, with whom I had been involved in ASB. Seeing her enthusiasm, I thought it would be a great experience for my friends. Desiree and I, who is now the vice president. The idea of spending our lunchtime on Mondays engaged in meaningful activities with friends sounded fun. Also, the welcoming and friendly club advisor further influenced me to join. lunchtime on Mondays engaged in meaningful activities with friends sounded fun. Also, the welcoming and friendly club advisor further influenced me to join. If someone were to inquire about joining FNL, I would advocate for it by emphasizing the community opportunities it offers. Joining FNL opens doors to becoming a greater part of the community, providing a platform to make numerous connections and friendships. Through Friday Night Live, I’ve had the chance to create relationships not only within my school but also across San Luis Obispo County. Working collaboratively with other schools in our area and meeting students from different corners of California during conferences has broadened my understanding of our community and made my high school experience much more memorable. The activities and involvement in FNL have, without a doubt, been instrumental in some of my favorite moments and connections I’ve made throughout my high school years
