OnSaturday, May 8, the Class of2010 marched down Brock Commons to Wheeler Mallwhere they listened to their commencement speaker, President Patricia P Cormier. Since this was Dr. Cormier's last commencement, we thought you might like to read these words ofwisdom she shared with ourgraduates
THISYEAR,MORETHANANYOTHERYEAR,IcansaychatIknowexactlyhowyoufeel.Thisyear, justlikeyou,IwillbeleavingtheLongwoodcampussoonaftergraduationtoembarkonthenext adventure.Likeyou,Iamfilledwithamixofexcitement,uncertainty,pride,andsadness.Andjust likeyou,IknowchatmyexperiencesatLongwoodUniversityhavepreparedmeforthenextstageof mylife.Todayweshareacommonbond,andIamproudtobeaLanceralongsideeachofyou.
Inyouryearshere,youhavelearnedquiteafewlessonschathavehelpedshapeyouintotheperson youaretoday.IthoughttodayIwouldsharesomeofthelessonsthatIhavelearnedduringmytime ontheLongwoodcampus.
LESSONNo.I:Youcanacknowledgethepastwhilelookingtothefuture.
Inmyroleasvisionary,IhavebeenabletoworkwirhtheUniversityleadershiptotransformcampus facilities,movethecampusforwardthroughUniversitystatus,andcheerourathleticsteamsinto DivisionI.However,Ihavealsorecognizedchattobalancebeingavisionary,Imustalsobeasteward oftheinstitution'shistoryandlegacy.Thisservesthelong-terminterestoftheuniversityand acknowledgesthehar,dworkanddedicationofthosewhocamebeforeme.Thechallengeistomarry visionandstewardship,ensuringthevitalityofthecorevaluesoftheinstiturionwhileguiding necessarychangesinaneffectiveway.
LESSONNo.2:Crisiscanbeadefiningmoment.
Inmyroleascrisismanager,unfortunatelythereareseveraltimeschatstandourinmymind. PerhapsthemostdefiningmomentofmypresidencyistheGreatFireof2001.InApril2001, Longwood'ssignaturebuilding,RuffnerHall,anditsRotundaburnedtotheground.Ontheday afterthefire,Ivowedtorebuildchatlandmarkandspentmanyyearsbetweenthenandnowtomake surechathappened.RuffnerHallwasofficiallyreopenedinApril2005.Icanfinallysaythatthe GreatFireof2001isbehindus.
Crisis,althoughdevastating,isarallyingcry.Inyourjobs,andinyourfamilies,youwillencounter manycriseschatyoumusthandle.Dosowithstrengthandconfidence,andrememberwhatistruly importantduringthosetimes.

LESSONNo.3:Don'ttakeyourselftooseriously. WhenIthinkabouttheskillsthatIwouldsuggestyoubring toyournextrole,oneofthekeyonesisnottakingyourself tooseriously.Anyleadershiprole,whetherinthecorporate world,inafamily,orinacommunity,hasitsshareof stressfulmoments,buttherearealsomanylighthearted times,whereyoucanenjoyyourrole,whereyoucanlaugh atyourself.
Duringmypresidency,Ihavedoneeverythingfromdance thejitterbugtodriveaconstructionvehicle,fromwearinga sweatsuittoadonordinnerinthenewfitnesscenterto wearingafireman'sjackettoacampaignkickofflThosewere funtimesanddefinitelythingstorememberaboutmytime atLongwood.
LESSONNo.4:Youcanhavebalanceinyourlives. Thereisnodoubtthataleadershiprolecouldbea24/7job. Thechallengeismikingadelicatebalanceberweenthe inclinationtoputothers'needsbeforeourownandselffulfillment.Duringthistimeofever-changingtechnology andlivesconstantlyonthemove,itismoreimportantthan everforustobeabletobalanceourhomelivesandour worklives.Itispossibleifwemaintainclearpriorities andvalues.
LESSONNoS:Acclaimandhumilitymustbebalanced. Youwillallhavetomaketoughdecisionsinyourfamilylife andinyourworklife.Toughnessandfocusisimportantand necessaryduringtryingtimes,andnotallowingyourselfto bedistractedcanbeakeytosuccess.
However,decisionsmustbemadewiththoughttothe consequences.Effectiveleadersrespectthelegitimacyof differencesandrecognizethatrarelywilltherebecomplete agreementintheprocessofmakingadecisionand afterwards.And,yes,sometimesitmeansthatyouwere wrong!
Byactingwithbothappreciationforyourpositionand humility,effectiveleadersacceptresponsibilityformaking difficultdecisions,whiledealinghonestlyandrespectfully withdifferingviewpoints.
Ideeplybelievethatleadershipisaprivilege.Itisthe privilegeofservingothers,ofservingsociety.Leadershipis notaboutwealth,recognition,power,andprestige;indeed, ultimatelyitisnotaboutmaterialorworldlythingsatall.It isabomknowingwhoyouare,whatyouruniquegiftsare, andapplyingthosegiftstoalifeofservice.Thevalue,the ethicthatIbelievedefinestrueleadershipisservice,service toothers,servicetothecommongood.
Oneofthetranscendinghistoricalcharacteristicsof Americanhighereducationisapronouncedemphasison socialresponsibility.Asyouknow,hereatLongwoodwecall thisCitizenLeadership.1hopethatyouhavetakenfrom yourtimeatLongwoodatremendousprideinthefactthat youreducationhasgonewellbeyondbooklearning, stressingthatanyknowledgeyouaccumulate,anyskillyou develop,isultimatelyuselessunlessitisemployedina meaningfulandbeneficialmanner.
IwouldberemissifIdidnottakethisopportunityto remindyouofLongwood's"official"definitionofacitizen leaderandsuggestthatitisemblematicofoneofour culture'smostenduringvalues,thatis,aresponsibilitytolive alifethatisofbenefittomorethanjustoneself:

AndwhiletheTangDynastycamelismorerhan1,000years old,itaddsafreshsenseofeleganceandenergyroLancaster Hall.AtLongwood,artisnotonlyforartmajors,andmore thanthree-quartersoftheuniversity'sartholdingsareon viewthroughoutthecampusfortheenjoymentand stimulationofstudents,faculty,staff,andvisitors.

Science"displayatChichester.InWygalHall,students, faculty,andpeoplewaitingtoheararecitalenjoymusicallythemedselections,whilenineteenth-centuryEuropeanprints linethehallwaysofGraingerHall,wherestudentsstudyin theDepartmentofEnglishandModernLanguages.Works byup-and-comingartists-someasyoungasfive-years-old!brightenthebuildingwherefutureteacherslearnintheHull EducationCenter,whichhostsanannualdisplayofthe region'sverybeststudentartwork.
Sciencestudents,forinstance,regularlyview-andeven study-90artworksinspiredbyecology,biology,chemistry, physics,botany,andgeography.Whiletheartworks primarilyaddintellectualatmosphereorextendlearningin abstractways,occasionallytheconnectionisveryconcrete. AssociateProfessorofBiologyAlixFinkpointsoutthat manyofthebirdprintsinthebuildingbyartistssuchas JohnJamesAudubonportraythebirdsintheircorrect habitat,occasionallywithotheranimalsoftheecosystem. Finnegan,thethirdof10children,hasoftensaidhewas attractedtoLongwoodbyitsemphasisoncitizenleadership, whichhesayshelearnedgrowingup."Myparents,members ofthegreatestgeneration,raisedthe10ofusinawonderful lovingenvironment,teachingusthevalueofhumorandthe ideathatitisworthwhiletoserveacausehigherthan yourself,"hesaidinMarch."Myfather(thelateCol.JohnB. FinneganwasbornSept.20,1949inFukuoka,Japan,where heliveduntil1952.Inhischildhood,healsolivedin Baltimore(1952-55and1966-67),Frankfurt,Germany (1955-58),Atlanta(1958-60),FortBenning,Ga.(1960-62), andOkinawa(I962-66).HewaslivinginBaltimorewhenhe graduatedfromhighschoolandenteredWestPointin1967.
FinneganconsidershisreturntoVirginiaahomecoming.His parentsmovedin1971toHampton,wherehisfatherspent hislastrwoyearsonactivedutyintheArmyatFortMonroe, whichcoincidedwithFinnegan'sfirstrwoyearsonactiveduty.
AftertheelderFinneganretiredfromtheArmyin1973,the familystayedinHampton,whereRosiandfourofFinnegan's fiveyoungerbrothersgraduatedfromhighschool.Eileen Finnegan,whosehusbanddiedin1989,remainedin Hamptonuntil2002,whenherfamilypersuadedhertomove toBaltimoretobenearthreeofFinnegan'ssistersandtheir families,allofwhomlivewithinfivemilesofeachother.

WhenLongwoodUniversityofficially openeditsnewCenterfor CommunicationStudiesandTheatre \, lastfall,OtisBrown,vicerectorof Longwood'sBoardofVisitors,said, "Thisisthenewhomeforfuture journalists,andforfuturestage managers,eventplanners,actors, broadcasters,speechwriters,and politicalpundits.Butmostofall,this placewillhaveagreatimpactonthe citizenleadersoftheworldthatthis universityisgoingtoprovide."
Classeshavebeenheldinthebuildingsincethebeginningof thefallsemester.Thethree-story,41,983-squarefoot buildingfeaturesaflexible174-seat"blackbox"theateras wellasastudiotheaterofabout80seatsthatwillbeusedfor studentproductions.Thereisalsoasceneshop,acostume shopandadraftinglab.Thecostumeshopincludes18 Berninasewingmachines,adyevat,andalaundryroom. Thecomputerlabisequippedwith15Macintoshcomputers
andseverallarge-scaleprinters.Thedraftinglab,locatedon thecornerofthethirdfloor,isfilledwithnaturallightfrom themanywindowssurroundingtheroom.Thereare 15draftingtables,eachwithparallelandT-squarerulers.
Facultyofficesarealsolocatedonthethirdfloorofthe building,whichoffersaspectacularviewofBrockCommons tothenorthandaviewoftheHealthandFitnessCenter andPineStreettothesouth.

Myparentslovedmeandwantedme to go to college.However,collegewas aplaceandanexperiencethatwas basicallyallmine.
They,liketheparentsofmostofmyfriends,neverworried muchaboutmysafety,chemajorIchose,dea._dlineschat Imightmiss,orevenmyjobprospects.Ichinkparents,for mostcollegestudentsinthe1970s,weresimplythebill payers;notreallypartofchecollegecommunity.
Iwasveryhappywithchisarrangement.Myparentshelped mepackmythingsinmyFordLTDandwavedmegoodbye.Iwouldwriteanoccasionalletterbackhomeorcall whenIneededmoney(cochisday,Istilllookfortheoutline ofacheckintheenvelopewheneverIgeealetterfrommy mom).Iamamusedthatmymomnowhasalotofinterest inthecollegelivesofhergrandchildren-theircolleges regularlysendhermagazinesandelectronicnewsletters. Onmymom'spart,Ithinkthisisnotjustareflection nacuralmaternallove,butofhowtheuncertaintiesoflife 30yearslacermaybeaffectingthelinkagesbetweenfamilies andchildren,regardlessoftheirages.
Theworldforcollegestudentsandtheirfamilieshas changed.Collegeismuchmoreexpensive.Careeroptions aremorecomplicated,andthejobmarkerisofrenamoving target.Safetyandsecurityarenowhighonthelistof concernsofparents.Theneedtobesuccessfulincollegehas neverbeenmoreimportant.So,auniversity'sconcrete
acknowledgmentofparentsandfamiliesasprime stakeholdersintheeducationoftheirchildrenseemslikea "no-brainer"toanoldsociologistlikeme.Longwood,like manyotherinstitutionstoday,understandschatparentsare partnersinthesuccessofourscudents.
Longwood,withthehelpof16familiesofcurrentstudents, hastakenthetimelyseepofformingaparentsassociation. InJanuaryofthisyear,thisgroupmetwithDr.Cormierand ocherLongwoodleaderstokickofftheLongwoodParents Associationanditsgoverningbody,theLongwoodParents Council.JimandGayAridasfromVirginiaBeach volunteeredtoleadthewayinformingchisassociation. TheAridas'hadconsiderableexperiencewithcheUniversity ofNorthCarolina'slongstandingassociationandcouncil (theirfirstdaughtergraduatedfromChapelHill)Jimand GayarethechairsoftheLongwoodParentsCouncil.
ThepurposesoftheParentsAssociationandthegoverning ParentsCouncilareverysimple.Theyexistcopromote academicsuccessofscudents,tofurtherLongwood'smission ofinstillingcitizen-leadershipvalues,andtoenhancethe universityanditsrepuracion.Allparents,byvirtueofhaving achildatLongwood,areautomaticallymembersofthe Association.ParentsthatareontheCouncilarenow workingonseveralreamstoimprovecommunications betweenLongwoodandallparents,tofacilitatethe transitionfromhighschoolcocollege,andtoincrease Longwood'soutreachtoallparents.TheCouncilparentsalso contribute$500eachyear.Thesefunds,controlledbythe Council,areusedtofundgrantproposalscocurrent scudents,studentgroups,anduniversityofficesthatpromote academicsuccess,citizen-leadership,anduniversity

CommencementatLongwoodismorethanjusttheculminationofyearsofworkandstudyitisalsoacelebratorytimeforstudents,theirfamiliesandfriends.

Wewelcomenewsfromourchildren'scollegesandenjoy meetingotherparents.Thisenrichesourlivesandmakesus feelpartoftheseuniversitycommunities.Frommyresearch onLongwoodparents,manyhaveexpressedthedesiretobe moreinformedandinvolvedinourwonderfulcommunity. TheParenrsAssociationandParentsCouncilwillmake thishappen.
Atthisyear'sOrientationandRegistrationandduringNew LancerDays,parentsfromtheCouncilandtheAssociation willbevisibleandengagedwithourincomingstudentsand parents.Severalfamiliesarehostingicecreamsocialsintheir hometownsfornewly-admittedstudentsandtheirfamilies andspecialeventsarebeingplannedforfamiliesduring FamilyWeekend.Itisexcitingtoseesuchadisplayof Longwoodspiritandpride.
Sincechisisanewthing,wearetakingcarefulstepsto makesurethisinitiativeissustainableintothefuture. Everyoneinvolvedrecognizesthatthisendeavorhas tremendouspotentialforourstudentsandtheuniversity. Weknowthatthisnewpartnershipwillyieldresults. Makes First Grant Awards

OnOctober17,alittlebefore9a.m., feelingsofanticipationandhopewere palpableinsideHinerHallasnearly 60studentsandsomefacultyandstaff assembledtopresenttheirfreshlycraftedgrantproposalstothe LongwoodParentsCouncil.
RepresentativesofI6organizations,campusdepartments, andacademicofficescompetedforthegrants.Thiswould turnouttobeabannerdayforLongwood.Itwouldbethe firsttimeagroupofparentsofcurrentstudents,having contributedfundstoLongwood,gottodirectthatmoneyin agrant-awardingprocessthatfeaturedstudentgrantwriters.
Throughoutthefirstcouplemonthsofthefa\lsemester, Dr.KenPerkinsandIkeptourfingerscrossedchatwe wouldgetenoughgoodproposalsfortheParentsCouncilto consider.Plus,wewerealittleconcernedabouthowwellthe studentpresenterswoulddoinaformalsettinginfrontof theParentsCouncil-which,tous,seemedabit intimidating.Attheendofthisday,wewerefilledwith immenseprideforourstudentsandtheParentsCouncil. Byanystandard,chisfirst-timeawardingofParentsCouncil grantswasaresoundingsuccess.Combined,theproposals totalednearly$26,000inrequests.TheParentsCouncilwas abletofundcompletelyfourproposalsandpartiallyfund sevenochers,distributingalmostallofits$8,000budget.
Proposaltopicswerediverseandcreative.Theyincluded projectsthataddressedimportantissueslikeeducating studentsabouteffectivemoneymanagement,acommunitywideserviceproject,extendedlibraryhoursforexam preparation,andsafetransportationforstudentsreturning fromthehospital.Someproposalswerealittlelessserious butweredeemedtobeworthyofsomefunding:game materialsfortheChessClub;travelfundsforthestudent
nursingorganization;andfundstospruceupastudent loungeareainthenot-so-modernCunningham residencehall.
Themostdramaticpartoftheprocesswasthepresentations totheCouncil.Allwerelively,andseveralwereaccompanied bymusicthateitherreflectedaproposalthemeorwasmeant toputtheCouncilmembersinagoodmood(lotsofbeach musicforsomereason).Duringthefirstfiveminutes,grant applicantsexplainedhowtheirproposalswouldpromote academicsuccess,citizen-leadership,and/oruniversity enhancement.ThenextfiveminutesallowedCouncil memberstoaskpolite,butpointed,questions.Forthe finalfiveminutes,theCouncilreviewedeachproposal inaclosedsessionwhilethenextapplicationgroup waitedinthehallway.
Inthemiddleofallchis,Dr.Cormiermadeasurprise appearanceandjokinglyaskedtopresentaproposalfor "alltheoldpeopleatLongwood."Then,Dr.Cormier, inamoreseriousvein,notedtotheCouncil,"Thisisa marvelousopportunitychattheParentsCouncilisproviding forourstudents.Itgivesthemreal-lifeexperienceingrant writingaswellastakingthestagetopresenttoagroupof judges-allhighlyrelevantskillsfortodayandinkeeping withhowwewantourstudentstogrowatLongwood."
TheParentsCouncilisinitssecondyear.Inaddition toitsgrant-fundingactivities,everymemberofthe ParentsCouncilworkscollaborativelywithuniversity representativestoimproveLongwood'scommunication andoutreachwithparents.ItisLongwood'sway ofacknowledgingtheviralroleoffamiliesinthe successofstudents.

The William Henry Ruffner Alumni Award
TheRuffnerAwardisthehighestandmostprestigious awardbestowedbytheAlumniAssociation.Itwouldbe presentedtoanalumnimemberwhohasachieved omstandingsuccessandnationaldistinctioninboththe recipient'spersonalandprofessionallife-theembodiment oftheCitizenLeader.
WilliamHenryRuffner(1824-1908),educationalreformer, clergyman,andgeologist,wasborninLexingtononFeb.11, 1824.Afterpursuingcareersasapreacherandgeological surveyor,hewasappointedinI870asVirginia'sfirst superintendentofpublicinstructionbytheGeneral Assembly.Duringhistenure,hedevelopedVirginia'sfree publicschoolsystem.Resigningfromhispositionin1882, Ruffnerreturnedtogeologicalsurveyingandfarmingbefore becomingpresidentoftheStateFemaleNormalSchool,now LongwoodUniversity,in1884.

ThomasJefferson(1743-1826),amhoroftheDeclaration ofIndependenceandtheStatuteofVirginiaforReligious Freedom,thirdpresidentoftheUnitedStates,second governorofVirginia,andfounderoftheUniversityof Virginia-voicedtheaspirationsofanewAmericaasno otherindividualofhisera.Aspublicofficial,historian, architect,philosopher,agriculturalist,andeducator,he servedhiscountryforoverfivedecades.Hiseducacional visionhelpedshapedthephilosophyoftheNormalSchool chatwouldbecomeLongwoodUniversity.Inastatementto Dr.JohnP.Emmetin1826,Mr.Jeffersonstated:

JabezLamarMonroeCurry(1825-1903),borninLincoln County,Ga.,grewupinAlabamaandgraduatedfromthe UniversityofGeorgiain1843wherehewasamemberof thePhiKappaLiterarySociety.WhilestudyingatHarvard LawSchool,CurrywasinspiredbythelecturesofHorace Mannandbecameanadvocateoffreeuniversaleducation. PeopleswillparticipateintheCarletonCollegeSummer MathematicsProgram(SMP),whichwillbeheldJune20 toJuly18atCarletonCollegeinNorthfield,Minn. Morethan100studentsappliedtotheprogram,which encouragestalentedundergraduatewomentopursue advanceddegreesinthemathematicalsciences.

BasscametoLongwoodduetoitsnow-defunct intercollegiatewrestlingprogram.Hewasrecruitedourof MountVernonHighSchoolinNorthernVirginiabySteve Nelson,thenthewrestlingcoachatChowan.AfterBass wrestledthereduringhisfreshmanyear,1979-80,Nelson cametoLongwoodinAugust1980tobeitswrestlingcoach.
"Ihadalreadyplannedtotransfersomewhere,andCoach NelsonaskedmeifIwantedtotransfertoLongwood.I didn'tknowwhatorwhereLongwoodwas.Ithoughtitwas stillanall-girls'school.IfnotforCoachNelson,Iwouldnot havemadeitthroughLongwoodorgoneintotheArmy. AsIrecall,CoachNelsonrepresentedmeonceortwicein disciplinaryhearings.Idon'tknowwhy,buthewas convincedIwasworthsalvaging.MyROTCcommander,

Withthehelpofabouc100volunteersandmorethana dozencorporatesponsors,Dunncompletedtwo"major packings"aswellasseveralsmallerpackingsthroughoutthe year.Throughmorethan1,500packages,theysenttoiletry items,snacksandochergoodscomorethan300soldiers.

WiththeWhiteOakYouth&SportsAssociation, Dunnoverseestheflagfootballprogram,whichisforfivecoseven-year-olds,wastheorganization'scommissioner forMarylandduringthe2008-09season,andisaboard member.Hisdaughter,Taylor,wasamemberofthe association'scheerleadingsquadthatwonanational championshipin2006.
Dunn,asinglefatherofthree,hasworkedforthepasttwo yearsfortheMaryland-NationalCapitalParkandPlanning CommissionattheMarlowHeightsCommunityCenter. HeworkedpreviouslyforFairfaxCountyCommunity& RecreationServicesforsixyears,andbeforechathewasa programmanagerwiththeDepartmentofParksand RecreationinWashington,D.C.,forthreeyears.Healsohas workedasajuvenileprobationcounselorinFairfaxCounty andAlexandriaandasarecreationtherapistatalong-term residentialfacilityfortroubledandemotionallydisturbed youthinRockville,Md.

Dr.JimJordan,professorofanthropologyandsociology, wasatechnicaladviserfortheepisodeofBonesthataired Jan.28ontheFOXnetwork.Hisyoungerdaughter,Dr.Karie JordanGoff,assistantprofessorofbiologyatFerrumCollege, alsowasatechnicaladviserfortheepisode,titled"TheDentist intheDitch."TheelderJordansharedhisexpertiseon techniquesofarchaeologicalanalysis,theyoungerJordan onforensicanthropology.
"Ourjobwastohelpmakethisbelievableonthescreen,"said Jordan.Aftertheepisodeaired,hemadealistof30"specific piecesofinformationthatKatieandIhadgoneoverahead oftimethatmadetheirwayintotheshowforanywherefrom twosecondstotwominutes."
Jordanandhisdaughterwerecontactedinthesummer of2009byPatCharles,thewriteroftheepisode,whowas giventheirnamesandtoldoftheirexpertisebyStanley Spry,aPrinceEdwardCountyHighSchoolgraduatewho isnowinvolvedinfilmproductioninCalifornia.

Dr.JeffAbernathy,'85,willbecome thepresidentofAlmaCollege inMichiganonJuly1.
Abernathy, the chiefacademic officeratAuguscana College in IUinois since 2004,wasannouncedas Alma's 13thpresidentin February. Alma is a private school ofmore than 1,400 students.
AcAuguscana, Abernathyhas beenvice president ofacademic affairs and dean ofthe college, aswell as a professor ofEnglish. Previously he was vice president ofacademic affairs and dean ofWestVirginiaWesleyan College, and before chat he was an English faculty member and associate dean at Illinois College.
Abernathy, a specialise in American literature andAmerican studies, is the author of To Hell andBack:Race andBetrayal in theSouthern Novel. Hegave Longwood's Simkins Lecture in 2004 and was ajuror for the 2002John Dos PassosPrizefor Literature at Longwood. A Richmond nativewhowas editor ofTheRotunda during his Longwood days, hehasa Ph.D. from theUniversityofFloridaand an M.A. fromVirginia Commonwealch University Heandhis wife, RebeccaWee, a poet andassociateprofessorofEnglish atAuguscana College, have two children. - K.B.
The Longwood Family Raises Over $60,000 To Fight Cancer
Nearly 800 students, alumni, faculty, and staff participated in Longwood's annual Relay for Life event held April 16-17 on Stubbs Lawn. This year's event was themed "An American Salute co Survivors" and raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society. Fifty-six teams filled Stubbs Lawn for the 12-hour event filled with entertainment, events, and fundraising. The event was kicked-offwith a concert by the band "Fools and Horses" followed by che lighting ofluminaria in honor or memory ofloved ones, as well as a Survivors' Reception, Survivors' Lap, and Caregivers' Lap. Relay for Life at Longwood has achieved significant increases every year since in its inception with fundraising for the 2010 event exceeding the 2009 total by $9,000.
Longwood University was represented at the 2010 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, a two-day, 39.3-mile event held in May in Washington, D.C.
