Over the next years, a major learning destination and visitor attraction will be developed in Nairobi.
Anzania is taking a bold new approach to engaging young people with some of the most critical issues of our time. It will redefine the museum landscape of Kenya with a vision and mission to appeal to today’s and tomorrow’s audiences.
With its inspiring transformation story, iconic building, and advanced exhibit design Anzania aims to become a world-class destination for the understanding, appreciation, and protection of nature. But also demonstrate how cultural institutions can contribute to a culture of sustainability.
Anzania will be an important destination for Nairobi and support its visitors in forging a deeper and more caring connection to the place they call home and the species they share it with. It will foster understanding of biodiversity and encourage environmental stewardship.
This master plan sets out the strategic vision for Anzania, our eco-park and kids' museum for Nairobi.
Not only will we be the first of its kind in East Africa but we are also the only visitors' attraction on the continent wholly dedicated to our planetary health.
We take our visitors on a journey of transformation. Showing children and adults alike that despite adversity, our relationship with nature can be restored. And that everyone, no matter how small, can be a changemaker.
The vision for Anzania has been created including a wide range of input and strategies. This includes Kenya's Vision 2030, Nairobi City's Climate Action Plan as well as the Kenyan Institute of Curriculum Education Framework.
Various stakeholders, including environmental organizations, experienced conservationists, and scientists were consulted to advise us on content and to help define our learning goals.
We present this masterplan with guidance and input from our partners including BuildX for the design vision, and NorthernLight for the exhibit journey.
We are lucky to have a formidable Board and Advisory Council who we have come to rely on for guidance and support.
Kenya is at the forefront of our global triple environmental crisis (climate, pollution, loss of biodiversity).
Despite its low contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, Kenya is already experiencing a disproportionate impact from increasing temperatures, rising sea levels to changing rainfall patterns and extreme weather. Various animal species are at risk of extinction.
With a growing consensus that the youth voice must be included in planetary stakeholder debates, there is a need to have inclusive conversations about our environmental crisis in public spaces, accessible to all.
Moreover, we need instill children with hope that not all is lost yet, and help them find the courage to lead the way. We can show them that everyone, no matter ho changemaker.

Anza is a Swahili word that means “To Start” and Nia means “Purpose” — a description of the changemaker that we hope will visit our green exploratorium.
The word is also a nod to Azania an ancient Greek name for South Eastern Africa, a name that also carries has historic connotations in reference to African independence and autonomy.
The name Anzania signals an utopian and magical land where kids can learn to create a sustainable environment for their future.

Anzania is a place for young eco-changemakers to discover and embrace their transformative powers.
Nelson Mandela famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” But if young people are to be stewards of climate action and conservation, we need novel ways and new places to strengthen their understanding of what is happening to our planet and show them how they can get involved.
With age appropriate, inspiring, and engaging environment and climate change education it is possible to bring these topics to life.
Our mission is to educate, engage and empower children in environmental challenges. Our exploratory gardens and interactive exhibits stimulate their natural curiosity and creativity. With nearly 2000m2 of exhibit area, botanicals gardens, and various playgrounds our young visitors can learn about and connect with our wondrous planet.
We create lasting memories that foster sustainable behaviour.
The need to educate children about our environmental challenges is no longer in doubt. Education on climate change, be it formal or informal, is now a key recommendation for various intergovernmental agencies.
Some countries have already incorporated Climate Change into the national curriculum. In Kenya, the curriculum includes 'Education for Sustainable Development'.
Anzania will offer a unique extracurricular learning e perience for kids at primary school age. We align with bjectives of the national curriculum as s Vision 2030.

Children are the true protagonist of our crisis.
The ‘Friday for Future’ campaign has sh there is a voice for the young in the cur that children can be drivers of change.
Anzania will be a place for teachers and parents to take children to learn in a age appropriate way about the environmental challenges or world faces, and to show them ways in which they can help restore our planetary balance.
The overriding message will be how each child, no matter how small, can make a positive difference to the world.
For children, play is the vehicle for exploring and learning, developing new skills, and connecting with others.
Scientists that study brain development have found concrete evidence that there is genuine power in play. Play can not be dismissed as “just fun,” it is a vital activity for children to learn about and interact with their world. Play supports children to gain the mental, physical and social skills necessary to succeed in their adult lives.
At Anzania, through self-directed play, children can follow their interests, explore the unknown, link outcomes with choices, conquer fears as well as make new friends. Our play based exhibits will stimulate children's natural curiosity and creativity.
Children will go on a journey along the different themed pavilions, exploring environmental topics like biodiversity loss and climate change.
Through guided workshops we support children t discover ways in which they can invent and build solutions that contribute to change. We demonst hands on that nobody is too small to be a change
In our outdoor areas and various playscapes children (re)connect with nature. We let children explore and experience fun outdoor spaces, infusing them with the love for the outdoors.

We harness the power of the youth and transform it into a force for change. We strengthen kids' role as environmental stewards by helping them not only find their voice, but also to raise it.
With the current state of the planet, preparing our children to be good environmental citizens is essential. Higher levels of environmental knowledge correlate with a higher degree of pro-environment and conservation behavior.
er to bring about real change in society, we need to onest and open conversations about our common nges such as climate change and biodiversity loss, ing debate into the public sphere. actions can go a long way when we all take them er.

On the backdrop of the conservancy area, is the factory of Simba Cement one of the biggest producers of cement in Kenya.
The area is barren and dry, the earth has turned to dust. Everything has been taken out of the land to support further human expansion and construction. But even in this desolate landscape, hope springs eternal.
Nature is resilient, if given the chance, even scorched land can be transformed into a healthy thriving ecosystem.
Anzania will bring the area back to life, reviving the soil with a huge diversity of plants. Through careful nurture we can repair the landscape and turn it into an exciting and diverse theatre of plants and life.

Our location and setting will amplify our story of hope, we demonstrate in real time how resilient nature is.

Anzania will demonstrate the rich tapestry of flora found in Kenya. In our botanical style garden, we will display some of Kenya's wonderful plant life.
Growing strictly indigenous plants, expect to walk through our succulent garden, see an abundance of aloes, admire a plethora of colourful orchids and be amazed by the multitude of grasses that underpin so much of Kenya's ecosystem.
In our botanical gardens we celebrate and honour trees native to Kenya and will learn more about their unique role in Kenyan tradition and heritage.
Anzania will work together with variou create works of art in the landscape. T be invited to produce installations usi materials and to think along with the t museum.
Using displays and replicas of ancient visitors can reflect on the past, times where humans respected and admired nature and its wonders.
This way our outdoor areas will be as thoughtprovoking as our indoor exhibit areas.
Twenty years ago, Eden Project transformed a chin clay pit in Cornwall into what is now often referre as the 8th wonder of the world, with the largest greenhouses on earth.
This visitor destination, cultural venue and global garden showcase our dependence on plants and demonstrate technological ingenuity and the regeneration of landscapes and livelihoods.
Eden Projects's global mission is to create a movement that builds relationships between people and the natural world to demonstrate the power of working together for the benefit of all living things.
Today Eden is a growing movement, working on and developing projects nationally and internationally.
Anzania would represent Eden's first steps on the African continent.

For each thematic pavilion we approach different foundations, companies or institutions to fund specifically themed exhibit halls. Most theme rooms have a target figure of $250.000 to design and build all exhibit installations.
Seed funds required for a start up team and operat funds for period immediately after opening.
Our primary goal is to ensure a healthy and independent operation made possible by revenues from admissions, sales, and programming. The museum wants to be future proof and is therefore funded and operated on a solid business plan.
The investment costs are estimated at 12million USD Dollar. The annual operating budget is based on revenue from visitors (78%), events and workshop (14%) , gift sho 3% and rents and playground admission for another 6%.
