A RESTORATION JOURNEY

“NATURE CAN WIN IF WE GIVE HER A CHANCE.”
- JANE GOODALL -

JUJA & THIKA SCARS

Along the Thika Highway, on the outskirts of Nairobi, a stark landscape emerges, marred by numerous abandoned quarries. Renowned for supplying the high-quality stones that built much of Nairobi city, these sites were once vital sources of construction materials. However, they now stand as desolate scars, stripped of their natural resources and left as barren wastela

These quarries stand as stark reminders of human exploitation. They are pockmarks on the landscape, their steep cliffs and jagged edges a testament to the destructive power of human’s need for exppansion. Some are filled with stagnant water, creating dangerous and unsightly pools. Others remain as barren, dusty pits, posing risks to the surrounding communities.

The restoration of a quarry is a testament to our commitment to restoring our relationship with the natural world. Anzania, with its transformative vision, will breathe new life into this desolate landscape and demonstrate how we can can restore biodiversity.

Before embarking on any restoration project, it's essential to establish a baseline.

By understanding the current state of the quarry, including its ecological health, soil quality, and biodiversity, we can set clear goals and measure our progress effectively.

HYDROLOGICAL SURVEY

A hydrological study investigates our spillway level, high water mark and details various factors to determine water balance, water level fluctuation, groundwater permeability and draining points.

TOPOGRAPHICAL & GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY

To inform our restoration plan, we will conduct a topographical survey to assess the depth variations within the quarry. Additionally, a geotechnical assessment will be carried out to determine the quality and stability of the rock walls. This comprehensive data will guide our restoration efforts and ensure the safety of the site.

BOTANICAL SURVEY

Working with botanists from National Museum of Kenya we will conduct a baseline botany inventory to measure the variety in plant life.

INVASIVE REMOVAL

For restoration to succeed, we need to identify and remove as many invasive species as possible. Invasive species, such as certain types of weeds and non-native plants, can outcompete native species and hinder the restoration process. By removing these invasive species, we create a more favorable environment for native plants to thrive.

BIRD INVENTORY

Birds play an important role in the structure and well-being of ecosystems, which is why they also act as bioindicators gauging responses to destruction and subsequent restoration. Ornithologists from Nature Kenya will support us with a bird inventory and record the number of species spotted.

INSECT INVENTORY

An insect inventory will be conducted as insects create biological foundation for al terrestrial ecosystems. The invertebrate Inventory will conducted by entimologiss nature Kenya.

THE RESTORATIVE CONTINUUM

Improving biodiversity, ecological integrity and ecosystem services.

Anzania's restoration approach prioritises a holistic ecosystem perspective. We understand that successful restoration involves more than simply planting trees; it requires careful consideration of the entire ecological network. By aligning our efforts with the broader environmental context, we aim to create a thriving and resilient ecosystem.

SOIL

The quarries we encounter are often str bare, leaving behind a desolate landscap rock. In some cases, there may be remnants of construction debris used for backfill, but these materials are often devoid of nutrients and not a strong foundation to support a diversity of life.

SOIL AMENDMENT

re part of our restoration journey is eate a suitable growing medium, ble of nurturing a diverse range of life. this could include Soil ndment will be performed through ddition of fertilizers and organic er

With the soil enriched, we can begin landscaping, creating spaces for plants & trees to thrive. This meticulous process involves terracing slopes, installing waterways and arranging diverse plant communities to mimic the natural ecosystem.

RSERY

will establish an on-site nursery filled with genous trees, grasses, and plants. These will be rced from local nurseries or propagated from rounding areas. This nursery will play a crucial role he restoration process and serve as a long-term resource for plant diversity and educational purposes.

Our home grown seedlings become the future source for all plants in our restoration gardens.
