FRIENDS, BY THE NUMBERS PHOTOGRAPHER TANJA HOLLANDER TRAVELS THE WORLD ASKING, “ARE YOU REALLY MY FRIEND?” AND GETS MORE THAN 400 PROFOUND ANSWERS.

The number 150 is generally accepted as the maximum friend count you can reasonably maintain before your capacity to keep track of them is strained. Known as “Dunbar’s Number,” it’s held fast since it was pinpointed in the 1990s— ostensibly because your social network may have grown, but your brain likely hasn’t. So what would you say if one of your thousands of virtual friends asked if she could photograph you in your house? And maybe

even stay with you? That’s precisely what photographer Tanja Hollander did in 2011 when she set out to photograph her 626 Facebook friends. Over six years, the project became a documentary on the meaning of friendship, communication, and travel in the 21st century.

Finally landing at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, “Are You Really My Friend?” records her journey through 451 portraits taken in 12 countries, 34 states, 180 cities

and towns, through a hurricane in Texas and terror attacks in Paris— covering 203,206 miles in all.

At least a half dozen trips crisscrossed through Las Vegas, where she’s completed commissioned portraits (more are on the way). Hollander’s real-life friend, Las Vegas filmmaker Robin Greenspun, made the documentary that accompanies her show and comes to the Las Vegas Film Festival in June. “How is this new word, ‘friend,’ that Facebook

has reinvented and corporatized, affecting all of us?”

Hollander asks. As she crashes on couches, leans on friends in dangerous times, and crosses oceans to see friends in real life, you might just begin to think harder about that question, too.

Everyone find their best blues! One of my husband, Reid Gardner’s, and my favorite events of the year is One Night for One Drop, in which Cirque du Soleil casts and crews donate their time and talent in support of areas in water crisis.

CHER CALLED ME “BABE.” And while I fully recognize that after five decades of performing, calling people “babe” is just a reflex for her—you know, like blinking or sneezing—it felt no less like a feminist anointing to me. When we began planning our annual “Women of Influence” issue months ago, I could think of no better person to be on the cover than Cher. Do you know anyone else who could more convincingly descend from a stage ceiling in tribal priestess costume (it’s the one on our cover) singing a feminist anthem like “Woman’s World?” Neither do I. Or who has exercised her influence— loudly and sometimes blisteringly (like it or not)—with no thought of personal consequences? Again, me neither. I spoke with her longtime friend and costume designer, Bob Mackie, for our cover story (page 74), and although she hasn’t strayed into

politics in her new show, he agrees that regardless of what you think about her opinions, her fearlessness in our current political climate is a breath of pure, unfiltered fresh air.

Painted into mesh bodysuits, wearing a sari and riding an animatronic elephant, surrounded by gyrating gladiators, maybe Cher is outspoken in the kind of theatrical way that resonates particularly well with a Las Vegas audience. But there’s also a reason that she’s been a trailblazer for 50 years, giving women permission to speak their minds, not shoehorn themselves into cultural norms, and, on occasion, wear a headdress made of rooster feathers.

To Cher and all the strong women making the world a little more amazing for the rest of us, we salute you.

In a city where culinary masters, entertainers, and artists all take center stage, and our Vegas celebrities are so public and accessible, they often influence us even more than they know (or maybe even want).

Las Vegas is full of influential women, many of whom are featured in this issue. With such headliners Cher, Britney, Celine, and Jennifer Lopez dominating the music scene, international contemporary artist Elena Bulatova giving us a taste of “the sweet life,” jewelry designer Kendra Scott and star chefs Lorena Garcia and Carla Pellegrino and restaurateur Elizabeth Blau to name a few, I’m celebrating their many accomplishments in our annual “Women of Influence” issue.

Growing up I was known as a “daddy’s girl,” and while my father, who I miss dearly, had a definite influence, it is now when I reflect that I see what a huge influence my mother has always been. For that, I’d like to pay a special tribute to her.

It’s my mother who instilled my early drive for independence and taught me valuable survivorship skills at an early age. And it’s the strong women in my family, as well as friends and business associates, that have been the “wind beneath my wings.”

(You know who you are!) I hope you’ll take a moment to think about the influential women in your life, too.

One of the charms of the annual, one-night-only performance of One Night for One Drop, imagined by Cirque du Soleil as a benefit for critical worldwide water issues: its wacky cast combos. This year’s performance was no exception, with Grammy-nominated rapper Redfoo from Party Rock Crew playing the role of the Voice of Reason, and 13-year-old America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal playing a winsome circus poodle-wrangler.

Having lost her dog, she takes out her ukulele and sings her original “Light The Sky.” The show follows the story of an abusive ringmaster (Humanity) forced to look back at his own abuses of his assistant (the Earth) and ask for a redo. Fittingly, VanderWaal, the Tenors, Shatner, and Redfoo ended the show linking arms for a rousing can-can dance to a singalong number called “Screw It—We’re Moving to Mars.”

JACK WEINSTEIN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY Guests were encouraged to dress in 1960s Vegas glamour for Vegas icon and Tower of Jewels owner Jack Weinstein’s 90th birthday celebration at the Westgate on February 25. A night of music and storytelling with great friends and prominent Vegas citizens included reminiscences about Weinstein’s first job in Detroit for Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa, and the time Tony “The Ant” Spilotro (unsuccessfully) tried to rob Tower of Jewels. The birthday party for ever-charitable Weinstein was itself a benefit, raising $16,300 for Casa de Luz, an organization that helps the 8,000 families living below the poverty level in the Naked City neighborhood near Stratosphere.

So when she met the press at Project Las Vegas in February wearing a heart-stopping Schiaparelli haute couture romper, we cheered that her bag cost only $298. Oh, and that it carried the Céline Dion brand. Here’s what you must know now about Dion’s new bags: They’re drool-worthy and affordable. Clutches from the music-themed collection run about $80 and handbags around $300. She carried a black Octave bag—the pièce de résistance of the collection—a double-handled satchel bag with a removable shoulder strap and brushed gold hardware. The collection is priced accessibly because she wanted it to be within reach of her fans—and to fulfill important functions like not spilling out while you are doing everyday Céline things like riding roller coasters. Don’t expect her to stop at handbags. “My dream file is now many drawers,” she says, full of inspiration tears and sketches of “jewelry, fantastic cakes, party ideas, ties for men, boots and shoes, makeup.” She’s hoping to extend her lifestyle brand into all sorts of affordable items. “Like the songs I sing—I want people to think I’m accessible and reachable.” We would like to wear Céline jewelry while eating Céline cake.

SushiSamba’s mission is to have the best, most diverse Japanese whisky selection in Vegas—an ambitious goal for the Palazzo restaurant already known for a mammoth sake list and an inventive Japanese and South American menu.

“Japanese whisky is based on Scotch, which goes back over 500 years,” says Hayes Swope, SushiSamba’s director of hospitality and training.

“The Japanese are playing a lot more with different mixtures of grains and barley but follow the same regulations.”

With its 30 mostly rare whiskies, it is carving a unique identity among its Strip competitors, including its next-door neighbor.

“Delmonico Steakhouse has

the biggest, best brown liquor list I’ve ever seen,” he says. “And they have six from Japan.” To spread the word, SushiSamba has introduced a seven-course Japanese whisky pairing menu, including a passion fruit sour served alongside a tempura Minter Sweet oyster. Swope describes the Wagyu Cocktail as “decadence in a glass.”While the pairing dinner was devised as a limited run, he expects it to continue as the demand for Japanese whisky increases.

Kendra Scott welcomes her first Vegas store in May, equipped with The Color Bar, which allows customers to customize jewelry on a touch-screen display. But her brand, which has grown to a massive, mainstream name from a $500 business she started in a spare bedroom, isn’t all about the bling.

What was the inspiration behind your brand?

“I’ve always loved colorful gemstones, but there was nothing I liked at an

affordable price. So I decided to make it myself using natural gemstones to create unique, quality, affordable pieces.”

Who do you design for?

the Kendra Gives Back charms. “It really starts with ‘You do good.’ My stepfather spoke these words to me while battling brain cancer, and I’ve carried them with me ever since. Because of him, I wanted my business to be about more than just selling jewelry. We not only give back with these custom-designed charms, but in so many other

meaningful ways. Last year alone, we partnered with over 3,500 local and national organizations, and donated $2.8 million to causes like MD Anderson and the American Heart Association.”

Describe the Vegas woman. “She’s colorful, confident, and not afraid to turn heads. She loves an eye-catching statement.

Just off the Strip sits Alta Drive, a historic street dotted with charming midcentury modern homes. It’s where Mary Beth Heishman—art teacher by day, silversmith by night—grew up. “Homes just aren’t built like that anymore,” she says. “[They were] simple yet functional, with those cinderblocks and textural patterns.”

They’re what moved Heishman to create her own line of handcrafted jewelry called I Adorn U. Drawing inspiration from the airy breezeways and concrete designs of Vegas homes of the 1950s and ’60s, Heishman began designing her pieces, which she sold through a small Etsy shop and at First Fridays in Downtown’s Arts District. “I’ve always kind of tinkered with jewelry, and it was a way to do sculpture on a miniature scale,” she says.

Now, 12 years after its establishment, I Adorn U is giving Vegas visitors and residents a piece of the less-advertised—but arguably more beautiful—part of the city. Heishman points to her Palm Desert necklace, featuring a stunning picture jasper (sourced from Oregon) floating on a sterling silver “cinderblock wall shield,” as a particularly special piece. “The stone looks like a watercolor painting of the desert. It reminds me of the vacant desert that was behind us on Alta for years,” she says. The UFC’s new Performance Institute will include a full-size octagon and bag-training area with camera analysis to help fighters hone their technique.

It’s early in the year, and Ultimate Fighting Championship COO Lawrence Epstein is leading a tour of the mixed martial arts organization’s massive new Corporate Campus and Performance Institute. “Everything is on schedule” for its May opening, Epstein says. “You can really visualize what’s going to happen with athletes using the facility.”

Actually, it’s difficult to envision unless you can imagine more than 500 finely tuned UFC fighters along with a 250-plus member staff at the UFC Athlete Retreat, which will bring them all together in the 30,000-square-foot facility for two days right after the opening to experience the amenities they’ll have free access to. Six miles southwest of UFC’s Vegas event venue, T-Mobile Arena, fighters will train with top-shelf equipment in environments that simulate training in higher altitudes; indoor and outdoor tracks; and even pain management with laser technology and cryotherapy. Upstairs, fighters will be able to analyze their sparring technique via camera analysis and motion capture technology while they work out.

The Institute was designed to have crossover appeal, since other professional athletes and celeb clients of parent company WME/IMG will have access, too.

Still, Epstein emphasizes, the Institute is all about UFC’s fighters. “First the facility needs to accommodate our athletes,” he says, “but we see opportunity for working with athletes from other sports. Great wine hinges on four elements, says rosé producer Sacha Lichine, the bon vivant owner of St-Tropez winery Château d’Esclans: the soil (that ineffable quality called terroir), the grapes, the climate, and, finally, the winemaker, whose craft harmonizes all the other elements. The problem, he adds, is that rosé is the most difficult wine to make well. Luckily for Château d’Esclans, Lichine is perhaps the most prominent producer in the world.

Ten years ago, winemakers, restaurants, and distributors could barely give rosé away. But exports of Provençal rosé to the US increased by more than 900 percent between 2006 and 2015, with a 58 percent increase between 2014 and 2015 alone. Now in its 10th vintage, Château d’Esclans’s flagship rosé, Whispering Angel, has come to epitomize the classic dry Provençal style.

Much of the complexity is owed to bâtonnage, whereby fine lees, or dead yeast cells, are stirred back into the wine, while new technologies, including advanced refrigeration systems and pneumatic presses, keep the processing precise, all crucial to the production of “a product that is very easy to make average,” Lichine says.

“The perception of rosé in America has changed dramatically,” says Aldo Sohm, chef sommelier at New York’s Le Bernardin, whose acclaimed wine program is central to its three Michelin stars. “There’s a real following of rosé now, which didn’t exist a few years ago.”

Perhaps Château d’Esclans’s greatest achievement, says Lichine, has been creating wines whose experiences are evocative of St-Tropez itself—clean, crisp, sophisticated, and fun. “What we’ve done,” he says, “is create a taste.”

When living in a guard gated community just isn’t private enough, a few select developments offer enhanced levels of security that can involve passing through up to four gates before residents arrive home —enough to provide even Tony Soprano with a feeling of sanctuary.

Each of the distinct neighborhoods in The Ridges of Summerlin includes a separate gate but just one, Promontory, has an extra-exclusive enclave called Promontory Point with a third access gate, beyond which dozens of homeowners have installed their own (number four) private security barrier.

This trend of creating increasingly deep obstacles to residences connotes a higher level of exclusivity, according to Ivan Sher, principal in Shapiro & Sher Group Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Nevada Properties (shapiroandsher.bhhsnv.com). “It’s like the American Express Platinum versus American Express Centurion.

They both get you pretty much what you need, but that Centurion card offers a little bit more prestige,” he explains. “A lot of people feel that having the extra set of gates is a higher level of security but even more so, a higher level of prestige.”

These fourth-gate owners are typically casino executives, celebrities and politicians who value their privacy above all, Sher says. “They will never say ‘I want a third gate,’ but they will tell me, ‘Security is of the utmost importance.’ Aside from the privacy aspect, security seems to be the number-one concern for the

ultra-wealthy right now. They’re looking to be in an area where they have the best possible protection and surveillance, privacy, all of it.”

Henderson’s newest luxury community, Ascaya (ascaya.com), plans to offer four privately gated enclaves with between five to fifteen lots each, some of which could be combined, says Darin Marques, sales manager.

MacDonald Highlands has four communities with a second private gate. Just south of The Ridges, The Summit Club (luxuryhomes lasvegas.com), a joint venture between The Howard Hughes Corporation and Discovery Land Company, will also offer exclusively gated neighborhoods.

Another option for these buyers is a compound with multiple residences on a large piece of land that is typically gated, private, and individually owned, said Sher.

“It’s just starting, but I’m seeing very wealthy people who have strong nuclear-style families looking to build estates where their kids are either on the property or nearby in their own residences. These 20,000-squarefeet estates are being built on multiple acres so that the kids and parents can live in the same area yet have their privacy. That’s something I’ve seen for those who can afford it,” he says.

Several are listed for sale here and there across the valley, but a

buyer who wants a newer compound would need to either find one of the large parcel options dotting suburban Las Vegas or choose a community offering multiple-acre lots and build their own, he says.

Buyers from California often conclude that moving to Las Vegas to build a large home with land makes the most sense. “The land and the cost of building in Nevada versus California is huge,” Sher says, pointing out most will save 13 percent on income taxes annually.

“If you take people making tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year, in a few years you’ve save a significant portion of the cost of building the house.”

BELIEVE! As Cher extends her smash engagement at The Park Theater at Monte Carlo we sat down with the living icon to talk about her career, the costumes, and of course, life after love.

IT’S HARDLY ACCURATE to say that Cher’s having a moment—she’s been having them since 1965. The genre-busting star’s career of hit songs, television shows, blockbuster films, and awards has included such moments as accepting her 1988 Oscar statue for Moonstruck in a nearly completely sheer, black Bob Mackie gown, and her 1986 Oscars outfit—with mohawk headdress made of 800 rooster feathers—that Mackie admits he questioned as “overkill.” (It is one of the most famous ensembles ever to have attended the Academy Awards.) She has taken a few farewell laps: Her 2002 Living Proof tour began as a 59-date tour in North America and morphed into 326 appearances around the world; a three-year residency at the Colosseum; and another farewell tour—Dressed to Kill—in 2014. The day we spoke, she’d just added 18 dates to her extended Classic Cher engagement at The Park Theater at Monte Carlo and the new theater at MGM National Harbor. And in March, the now septuagenarian opened her National Harbor show by asking the audience, “What’s your grandmother doing tonight?” At this moment, Cher is saying farewell to no one.

Obviously, you’re not calling this a farewell tour. What does it take to pull you out of quieter times?

I don’t know! Each time, I’ve honestly thought this was the end, because you can only do it for so long. There’s a finite time. And who knows if anyone’s ever going to want to come see you again?

So you start it, but you have no idea what’s going to happen. I think it’s fun and that’s your main objective. I mean, you want to bring people to a place that brings them great joy and that reminds them of a time in their life. And I’m always surprised at how many young people come too, because you don’t expect that.

Do you still have the same excitement when you go on stage?

You have to let yourself be free to enjoy it. I know what it’s like not to enjoy it, and it’s really not fun, so if you give yourself permission to have fun, then everything else falls into place. I’ve felt like I was being held back [before], and this place just allows me all the freedom that I want.

You pre-dated any performer we think of as edgy. Is there anyone contemporary you think is pushing boundaries the way you were in the ’60s and ’70s?

Of course I do, but when I was doing it, I was the only one that was doing it, so it was a little bit harder. When I went on the boat and did “Turn Back Time” [on the battleship USS Missouri in a fishnet body stocking surrounded by the ship’s crew], people freaked out, and it got taken off MTV, and people were shocked—and how could I? and whatever. And now anyone can do anything. I was the first person ever to show their bellybutton on TV. Well, it doesn’t sound like much now, but it was a big deal then. So somebody’s got to be blazing some trails.

You’d only sung “I Got You Babe” on the road once, and now with Sonny on a huge screen, you’re singing it together again. What prompted you to bring it back?

Well, a couple of things. I figured this is probably going to be the last time, no matter what I’m thinking, and I was thinking that he would just love that. I didn’t think I could do it before. I didn’t think I’d actually get through it. And then when we were in rehearsal, just to see if I could get through it, I really enjoyed it. When he died, everything changed. When he was alive, we could fight or do whatever we wanted to, but then all of a sudden he was gone, and it was a big loss—a huge loss. Our marriage was the least important thing that we did together.

Was it a revelation when you realized you could get through it? And maybe even have fun with it?

Yeah. It was the having fun with it that really changed things. Every night when I do it, I see him and it’s different. Warm. We had rough times, but every time I see him and we’re singing together, I like it. Look, we always had a good time working together. That’s just what Sonny and Cher was. If he came back today, we’d be able to pick up and do the same thing that we did before. Once we were in rehearsal and I realized that it wasn’t scary, and it didn’t make me feel bad, or make me feel sad, I was kind of thrilled because it added something new, and it added something new for me, and it was fun to see him.

There’s a clip in the show of you accepting your Oscar, where you said, “I’d never been accepted. I’d succeeded at everything I ever tried but I’d never been part of the group.” But you’re Cher! Is it important to be accepted?

It’s not very important to me now, but it was in the beginning. Because you want to be accepted by your peers, except I didn’t have any peers. There was no one welcoming me with open arms, so finally it took me a while to not care. There was always a point in my career, and that never stopped, that I was going to do what I wanted. But I was always going to be terrified to do what I wanted. And so I wanted to do it, and I was afraid, but not afraid enough to not do it.

Have the best moments of your career been the ones people would expect?

I think that most of the time that’s true, but it’s not true all the time. I did a play on Broadway and it wasn’t a huge success, [Ed Graczyk’s Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, in 1982,

directed by Robert Altman, a role she later reprised on screen]. But for me it was a milestone, and I got Silkwood from it. And I would have enjoyed it if I hadn’t gotten anything from it because it was just for me exciting and fun and unusual. It was an unbelievable amount of freedom and I loved acting. Sometimes things just come to you and they might not look like what you’re expecting but something makes it special and amazing to you.

It feels like there’s a lesson in there…

Well, for sure that was a freak. Because I was going to do an audition and then my mother thought I was someplace else and she called Bob Altman and they knew each other. And he said, “What’s Cher doing this year?” and my mom said, “She’s doing this that and the other,” and he called me and he said, “I’m going to send you a script,” and that was the Broadway play. And it was something that opened a door for me that was a whole new chapter of my life and I loved it.

Do you love acting for the same reasons you like performing onstage?

It’s different. It’s much different. I always say this but I always mean it. Singing is like going to a party at someone else’s house and acting is like throwing the party at your own house.

Do you have a favorite part of your show?

And a favorite costume?

“Burlesque” I like the most. It’s just so much fun and it’s kind of new… like a little baby play. And I love the songs—and it’s choreographed so well. I just really enjoy it. I think the gold dress is really beautiful [worn with a blond wig and a gold halo in “After All”]. I’m singing in the boat. I enjoy the costume-wearing, too. It’s fun to make a storyline that isn’t just music. It’s just like an extra part of performance. It’s not like in a film where you put your work clothes on and it gives you an insight into the character that you wouldn’t otherwise have maybe, but the costumes are kind of like the cherry on the top.

You’ve just added 18 shows to your mini-residency. If you were just trying this on for size, it seems to fit.

This is more fun than my other experiences because I like this venue so much. It makes me feel happy and excited. It’s a concert venue, so people are able to get up and dance around and be unrestrained. It makes me feel good. I want to see people having fun—it’s my only purpose for being there. I like that so much. I feel just really free.

DRESSER CONFESSOR Cher’s longtime friend and costume designer Bob Mackie weighs in.

You’ve been working with Cher for a long time. Yes, 50 years…terrifying! And we were full-blown adults when we met.

Do you have a favorite costume for this show? I don’t have a favorite. Some of the looks go back to the beginning, like the headdress [“Half Breed”], and the bellbottoms [“I Got You Babe”]. The costume she wears for “Woman’s World” is exciting—it’s all turquoise with a big afro, and that’s a whole new costume. And when she comes out on the boat [for “After All,”] she’s like a religious icon. She falls into all these ethnic groups so beautifully—African, Indian, Middle Eastern. You never lose her in a costume. When we first started working together, the ideal was the turned-up nose, squeaky-clean blue-eyed girl, and yet there were millions of girls who had olive skin and a bigger nose. Cher gave them the freedom to be who they are.

It’s been said that there are dozens of major fashion moments that wouldn’t have happened without your collaboration with Cher—like the Met Gala dress that Kim Kardashian wore in 2015 inspired by a dress you made for Cher in 1974.

In the beginning, she was the only one who [dressed up]. The pop music stars thought it was cool to wear T-shirts—whatever you showed up in. Cher loved getting dressed.

Then Madonna, and now Gaga, Pink, J Lo, Britney: Every time they change a song they change their clothes. That Met dress—Cher wore it to the Met Gala in 1974, and I was her date, and the place went crazy. Then, people just wore nice clothes, and now it looks like a costume ball. [Kardashian] didn’t look like Cher.

What are your favorite memories of working with Cher through the years?

The woman is still the girl she was years ago. Nowadays, she has a little more of an opinion. When she wanted that mohawk for the Academy Awards, she was mad at the Academy because she hadn’t been nominated for Mask. “Don’t you think it’s a little overkill?” I asked. “No, it’ll be fine,” she said.

And that picture has shown up every year since 1986.

There are some life hacks that are so very indispensable for living in Las Vegas, including, but not limited to, escaping from duct tape, rope, and zip ties in 10 seconds or less; picking locks; and defending yourself with a tactical pen.

You might be following the great tradition of such venerable Vegas forefathers as Joe Pesci (whose character in Casino had clearly mastered pen

skills). But whether your interest is purely recreational (handcuff escape!) or you anticipate a one-way drive to the desert, there’s now a class for that. I tried Spy Escape & Evasion, a 75-minute spy-craft stage show hosted by ex-CIA officer Jason Hanson on weekends at Stratosphere.

And I was as blown away by his presentation as his investors on Shark Tank, where he ultimately

secured funding from FUBU CEO Daymond John. Hanson tied up my 7-year-old—an option every parent has wanted to exercise at some time, in this case made acceptable because, entertainment!

Using the techniques he showed the crowd, she quickly broke free. The evening of sometimes alarmist infotainment attracts a mix of pure fun-seekers, paranoid

Doomsday preppers, and that confrontational drunk girl. (You know the one.)

And you can expect to be peddled a scary buzzing flashlight, paracord key chain useful for smashing windows, and RFIDblocking card to protect you from lurking electronic pickpockets, all of which you will be convinced belong in your crisis bag.

(What? You don’t have one?) Will you ever need

to disappear without a trace, utilize your new counter-surveillance techniques, or transform yourself into a human lie detector? It’s hard to say—although Hanson’s pile of unnerving statistics points to yes. You will definitely, however, emerge with a few unbeatable party tricks.
