LET TER from THE PUBLISHER

A NEW BEGINNING When Philadelphia Style magazine first hit the shelves in 1999, we were the underdogs, a passionate group of visionaries who banded together with the solitary mission of highlighting all of the incredible (and often untold) things that Philly had to offer. Today, we’re proud to have spent the last two decades covering every nuance of Philly’s remarkable renaissance, and honored that we’ve become a part of the cultural and social fabric of what we all know to be the greatest city in America. And just as this city of ours continues to evolve, Philadelphia Style has now reached the next rung in our evolution. Our journey has led us from being an independent publication, to being acquired by Niche Media, to today, where we’ve now become a part of the Modern Luxury family—the country’s largest local luxury media company with 84 titles in the top 24 markets in the U.S. What does this mean? It means that we’re going to continue bringing you the very best of the region, but we’re really taking things to the next level by committing to run 16 issues in 2018, up from our standard six. Ten issues will be the usual Philadelphia Style, covering things like the hottest fashions and coolest restaurants, plus we’ve added three additional ancillary magazines that are dedicated to topics like home design, bridal and a charity datebook that’ll make sure you’re always on top of your philanthropic game. Be on the lookout for the fun to begin in the coming months. But despite our growth, who we are and what we stand for is never going to change. One of our guiding principles has always been that we’re not just about the genres we cover— we’re also about bringing to light the awe-inspiring Philadelphians behind the stories. The real estate developers whose grand visions and perseverance create places for Philadelphians to call home; the CEOs who hold such hometown pride that they weave the city itself into the narrative of their companies; the athletes who battle it out on the court and fields to prove that we here in Philly never back down from a challenge; the designers whose creative visions show that we have a world-class style all our own. The list of people goes on infinitely, and we’re going to continue highlighting their stories with positivity, just as we always have. This city never ceases to inspire and embolden us, and in return, we pledge to continue bringing you the people, places and things that make our great hometown tick. I thank you all for 18 years of unwavering support, and I can’t wait to show you what’s in store for Philadelphia Style.

THE DAY-DATE 40 The international symbol of performance and success, reinterpreted with a modernized design and a new-generation mechanical movement. It doesn’t just tell time. It tells history.

SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER “I cannot endure to

waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house,” wrote Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1842. If Hawthorne, who was best known for The Scarlet Letter, were still with us today, he may have penned something more along the lines of “put down your phone and step outside.” It’s really that simple: Just unhook yourself from those thin white power cords or digital leashes we are all tied to each day and go do something. September promises some of the year’s finest weather and those not-too-hot, not-too-cool days should be spent seeing things you haven’t seen before. This month’s arts and culture happenings offer plenty of opportunities to do just that. The Fringe Festival is back for another year, the Barnes Foundation’s Mohamed Bourouissa: Urban Riders continues through Oct. 2, and the Art Museum welcomes back several of Cy Twombly’s celebrated works in its limited-time exhibit, Iliad, through Oct. 8. I’m most looking forward to Opera Philadelphia’s first-ever festival, O17, bringing both old and new productions to unexpected venues around town. Of course that’s no reason to skip the things you have seen before, like the still-new Museum of the American Revolution. I’ve visited a few times, and was lucky enough to attend the grand opening with keynote speaker former Vice President Joe Biden, and continue to be so impressed with the collection’s artifacts and installations. Since September is the season most closely associated with change—blame it on the first pangs of seasonal affective disorder from the summer ending or that inescapable feeling of nostalgia thinking back to when you were still in school— it’s only fitting that Philadelphia Style debuts its new format Paintings, drawings and sculptures by Cy Twombly now under Modern Luxury. As the country’s largest local luxury on view at the Art Museum. media company, Philadelphia Style joins a portfolio of 84 titles in 24 markets. We’ll also be increasing our issue frequency and producing complementary magazines for weddings, home design and social events. Despite the new look and feel, our mission to deliver the most of-themoment lifestyle content in Philadelphia—which now includes a new Travel & Recreation section for adventures beyond the City of Brotherly Love—remains stronger than ever. Philadelphia Style is nearly 20 years old. In that time the magazine has not only survived but thrived amid shifting media and retail landscapes. Joining the Modern Luxury family marks an exciting new chapter in the story of Philadelphia Style. I hope you’ll be reading along.

Summer vacation season is over. How will you kick off the fall season in Philly? 1

1] ADAM ERACE contributing writer “Every free moment I have in the summer is spent at the Shore, so I like to get reacquainted with all my favorite restaurants in the city—and with cooking. For local ingredients, this is the best time of the year, with tomatoes, peppers, corn and peaches still abundant.” 2] BRIAN FREEDMAN contributing writer “The same way I always do: with a long-smoked brisket that I’ll get up at 5am to start, a Manhattan or two and a long list of all the restaurants I’ll want to visit over the next few months.”

I’ll most likely be breaking out my enormous sweater collection, and diving into the new hard ciders that I’ve discovered recently. Bonfires with friends are also an absolute must.” 5] A.D. AMOROSI contributing writer “I’ll hit as many festivals as I can get to: the twoday Made in America, the Fringe Festival, Opera Philadelphia’s debut O17 Fest, DesignPhiladelphia, the Midtown Village Fall Fest. I’ll be so busy festing, I may never get home.”

been thrown around with abandon, but rarely does a piece actually have it. Clad in sumptuous crocodile leather or the brand’s distinctive intrecciato knit, Bottega Veneta’s Knot Clutch (from $3,150) is the epitome of a fall “it” bag. This chic piece is the perfect addition to any outfit and is just the right size for your keys, wallet, iPhone and Tom Ford lip gloss—plus a passport for the jet set. Each clutch sports Bottega Veneta’s knot closure wrapped in a signature tie, à la Tomas Maier’s iconic knot clutch designed in 2001, when Maier first took over as creative director. Grab the new style in crocodile, intrecciato knit or karung in a variety of shades, including blush or black. When the under-arm tuck isn’t enough, go hands-free with the thoughtful crossbody strap. With convenience and style enveloped in one small package, Bottega Veneta once again proves the label most certainly has it. –Lauren Loudermilk

WYSE CHOICE

“Women of Philadelphia want to support young, creative designers,” says Colleen Wyse. It’s with this mantra in mind that Wyse, a former publishing and sales executive for venerable fashion glossies like W and Vogue, founded the year-old Philadelphia Trunk Show (philadelphiatrunkshow.com), a platform for emerging fashion designers to get their wares in front of would-be clients. So committed to her sartorial cause, Wyse hosted the first trunk show at her home, inviting female influencers to comb the racks of local labels like Lobo Mau, Supra Endura and Terese Sydonna and buy on the spot. “It’s so important to support Philly’s creative economy,” she says. – Kristin Detterline

PRETTY AND PINK

The 2005 Dom Pérignon rosé is 55 percent pinot noir, 45 percent chardonnay and all delicious.

Remember that warm, dry summer of 2005? Us neither. But this newly released gem of a sparkling rosé from Dom Pérignon will have you toasting that bygone season. On the nose, the Champagne offers a dense blend of tropical fruit and lightly toasted spice, while on the palate, this pink wonder shows the complexity of its pinot noir-heavy blend, featuring what Dom’s head winemaker, Richard Geoffroy, describes as a “bracing vinosity” and finishing with blood orange. Despite heavy rains that September (we don’t recall those either), his team “managed,” he says, “through drastic selection, to harvest grapes of exceptional quality.“ $330, Fine Wine & Good Spirits, 2040 Market St., finewineandgoodspirits.com –David Zivan

ON THE MARC Leather, crocodile embossed bag, $470, from Marc Cain’s fall-winter 2017 collection

While European women have been stocking their wardrobes with Marc Cain (marc-cain.com) since the ’70s, Philadelphia fashion mavens are finally getting to know the German-born contemporary womenswear label from its new digs inside the King of Prussia Mall. And they like what they see, what with trim silhouettes and fashion-forward looks that feel wearable no matter the occasion. The fall-winter 2017 collection is no exception, boasting an easy-to-wear style that alludes to athleisure trends but with a luxe edge courtesy of velvet, tulle, chiffon, cashmere and faux fur. Stephen Belfer, Marc Cain USA managing director, says the label’s collections “cater to every woman with functionality and class.” We can’t think of a piece that represents those two elements more than Marc Cain’s take on stirrup pants, an ’80s wardrobe staple ready to make a millennial comeback. – Lexi Hill

SPiN, a Ping-Pong club that opened this summer in Rittenhouse with addresses also in New York, Chicago and Austin, is the perfect venue to socialize while trying your hand at the fast-paced Olympic sport. SPiN CEO Pieter Vanermen says that the company’s vision “to inspire and unite people through Ping-Pong” complements the City of Brotherly Love’s “vibrant environment and diverse creative community.” We couldn’t agree more, what with perks like private sessions with a pro to help perfect your game at one of the club’s 17 tables, locally sourced snacks like organic kale chips and signature drinks with table tennis themes (try the Backspin). COLLECTOR’S EDITION

STYLISH SIPS In its sixth and latest in a series of collaborations with noted photographers (others have included Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino), The Macallan has released a limited-edition Scotch whisky set inspired by the visual craft of Steven Klein. Aligned with the mysterious extra element of “time,” so vital to the arts of both photography and distilling, this exclusive gift set puts a special blend by The Macallan’s master maker Bob Dalgarno center stage, featuring more heavily peated whiskies, as well as the distiller’s first use of whisky aged in Rioja wine barrels. A luxuriant smokiness, as well as a subtle sweetness and a red mahogany hue, highlight the pour, making it—like Klein’s photography—a multisensory treat. The set is presented in a sleek black case with one of 10 different signed prints, a bold horse-head stopper and a range of bar tools—with only 100 editions earmarked for the U.S. $2,995, by request only, inquiries.us@macallan.com –Mike Espindle

It’s difficult to remember now, with less-than-affable TSA agents, awkward shoe removal and jampacked concourses, but there was a time when flying was an experience to be relished. In an attempt to bring dignity back to the sky-bound, American Airlines (aa.com) reimagines its first-class experience with Flagship First Dining, a full sit-down, fine-dining experience at select airports. “We don’t want our flyers to go to JFK and then down to Miami and have the same experience,” says star mixologist Pamela Wiznitzer, creative director at craft cocktail joint Seamstress in Manhattan and one of the purveyors American tapped to help the concept take off. “It has to be regional; it has to be authentic,” she adds. At JFK, that means fresh cheeses from Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; exclusive wines selected by master sommelier Desmond Echavarrie (he was running the wine list at The French Laundry by the age of 30); and five new cocktails by Wiznitzer, including the Old Manhattan (a refresh of the classic made with Woodford Reserve) and the Gin Basil Lemonade (made with Brooklyn Gin and Barrow’s Intense ginger liqueur, both distilled in New York). And as Flagship First Dining arrives at other airports—MIA and LAX are booked for upgrades by year’s end, with many more in 2018—menus change to reflect the region, restoring class to the boarding pass. –Zachary Wilson

LADY OF THE HOUSE We’ve seen many sides of Lady Gaga since she had her breakout moment in 2008 with the hit song “Just Dance.” Despite any sartorial missteps in the early years (meat dresses and Kermit the Frog coats come to mind) her wardrobe has evolved from shocking to chic. Look no further than the pop star’s jewelry collection, HardWear, with Tiffany & Co. (1414 Walnut St., tiffany.com) for proof. Launched in May, these elegant yet edgy accessories—think chunky link bracelets and swingy ball drop earrings—are available in sterling silver, gold and rose gold. Catch the newly minted jewelry designer during a two-day stop on her Joanne World Tour, in support of her latest album by the same name, at the Wells Fargo Center Sept. 10-11. Philadelphia celebrates its distinction as a World Heritage City with a 45-day fete dubbed GlobalPhilly 2017. By Lauren Loudermilk

HOW WILL WORLD HERITAGE STATUS IMPACT PHILADELPHIA?

JS: Philadelphia has been– and can once again become– our nation’s most truly global city. The Global Philadelphia Association and the World Heritage City Project jointventured with the City of Philadelphia to envision a newly resurgent city and region, one that takes this recognition as... a stimulus for new achievements in education, hospitality, international outreach, investment and the arts. MOVING FORWARD, HOW WILL THE TITLE HELP TO CONTINUE TO RAISE PHILLY’S PROFILE ON THE WORLD STAGE?

JS: Philadelphia has not been content to see the WHC distinction merely as an honorific and to rest on its laurels. We are aggressively communicating our new status across the globe. Through the OWHC, we are developing new bilateral and regional relationships, and in late fall we will be leading a city delegation to the World Congress in Gyeongju, South Korea. ZT: [World Heritage Status] is automatically a draw

for folks who are coming in from abroad or who are global themselves in the U.S. The value of this nomination to our region is very important and will have far-reaching consequences in terms of defining Philadelphia as a more global city. WHAT ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS FOR GLOBALPHILLY 2017?

ZT: This year is really exciting because Philadelphia is now a World Heritage City. We have a number of events happening globally, in Málaga, Spain; Mexico City; and Morocco—all emanating from Philadelphia organizations. The World Heritage Celebration (Sept. 7, Crystal Tea Room, 100 E. Penn Square) is an annual event designed to showcase the work that we are doing in Philadelphia to celebrate our World Heritage status. The event is chaired by Governor Ed Rendell and Julie Coker Graham, and will feature Mayor Jim Kenney, U.S. Senator Bob Casey and the OWHC Deputy Secretary General Lee Minaidis, a former deputy mayor of the Greek island of Rhodes.

ON TOP of the World

In late 2015, the Organization of World Heritage Cities named Philadelphia the first World Heritage City in the U.S. Philly nabbed the honor for its illustrious history and values, along with a little help from Independence Hall, a UNESCOrecognized World Heritage Site. Though not big in America yet, the honor means Philadelphia joins 270 international cities like Vienna and Berlin in preserving and cultivating important heritage. In time for September’s GlobalPhilly 2017 (Sept. 15-Nov. 1), we spoke with John Smith, board chair, and Zabeth Teelucksingh, executive director, of the Global Philadelphia Association (globalphiladelphia.org) about what the distinction means for the City of Brotherly Love.

The new O17 Festival offers tantalizing takes on classic operas at unexpected city venues. By JoAnn Greco

Opera Philadelphia is set to wow crowds beyond the hallowed halls of the Academy of Music for its inaugural opera festival, O17, Sept. 14-25. Here, General Director and President David B. Devan talks about some of the big surprises in store.

Starting with the premieres, Elizabeth Cree at the Perelman Theater is a Victorian thriller by Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell; Daniel Bernard Roumain and Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s We Shall Not Be Moved, directed by Bill T. Jones at the Wilma Theater, is inspired by the frustrations expressed by Philadelphia’s inner-city youth; and The Wake World, an adaptation of an Aleister Crowley story by composer and librettist David Hertzberg, uses its setting at the Barnes Foundation to amazing effect. Anything else you’re excited about?

We’re also offering War Stories at the Art Museum, which pairs Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with I Have No Stories to Tell You from composer Lembit Beecher and librettist

Hannah Moscovitch, and a version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Academy of Music that includes video components and is unlike anything we’ve ever produced. So—something for everyone, right?

Yes, some operagoers like to dress up and go to the Academy, others want more intimate or immersive experiences. And it’s not an age thing: There are plenty of opera buffs who are looking for something different. How will the festival showcase Philadelphia?

You can’t get this mix of opera anywhere else in the world—people will get on trains and planes to come see these works by leading composers and artists. Plus, they’ll experience some of the city’s richest cultural institutions. All-access tickets from $175, operaphila.org

Spa Metropole by Givenchy showcases the clean characteristics of architect Didier Gomez.

MAISON PROUD Monaco is known as a posh playground for the global elite. Yet, down a cypress-lined avenue, tucked beyond the buzz of the glittering yachts, casinos and boutiques, a quieter form of luxury awaits at the Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo and newly bowed Spa Metropole by Givenchy (metropole. com/en/spa-montecarlo). The spa experience is crafted to evoke the creation of a couture garment with Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy himself. A pristinely groomed spa associate hands me a tablet on which I select not only my music and massage pressure preference, but also build my personalized mood board recalling the sounds, scents and visual elements that resonate most with my personality. Afterward, the attendant promptly delivers my signature scent—spritzing my personal pochette to wear in the pocket of my robe as I embark on the sensory journey. Nestled in one of the 10 treatment rooms, the indulgent Le Soin Noir Renaissance Intégrale unfolds over a luxurious two-hour symphony of massage and facial. Featuring the most precious of all the Givenchy skincare collections, Le Soin Noir employs algae as a regenerative agent, packed with anti-aging effects delivered through a trademark massage technique. For the grand finale, a cool blast of cryotherapy to refresh and renew the skin. In a day when true luxury is defined by experience and personalization, Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo and Spa Metropole by Givenchy both deliver a customized experience that can only be compared to haute couture. “The secret to elegance is being yourself,” de Givenchy famously said. Indeed, Monsieur. –Phebe Wahl

Philadelphia-area spas and salons are turning to the kitchen to source organic ingredients for your next beauty treatment. By Lexi Hill

What’s more Instagram-worthy than an 11-foot-tall living plant wall for impromptu posing? Aside from an 11-foot-tall floral wall, probably nothing. But you might not expect to find this leafy photo focal point inside a suburban salon. At Tribe Style Bar (882 Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford, 484.732.8499, tribebeauty.com), husband-and-wife duo Emily and Andrew De Stefano found all the inspiration they needed at nearby Longwood Gardens when creating their dream salon. As one of only two certified Green Circle salons in the Philadelphia area (Green Circle is a membership-based organization that offers sustainable solutions for salons throughout North America), Tribe’s mission is to create of-themoment looks while maintaining a green lifestyle by “recycling all paper, plastic, foils and even unused color all while being energy efficient,” says Andrew. Tribe’s featured brands OSEA skincare and Kevin.Murphy hair products reflect that green mission. In particular, the Kevin.Murphy Treat.Me hair facial might be your best bet when it comes to adding some life back into your strands after those long days at the beach. Green City Beauty (1036 Pine St., 267.908.4148, greencitybeauty.com) also promotes ingredient-conscious products and services. Its most buzzed-about treatment is the sugaring wax. “Unlike waxing, there are no sticks or strips, and the sugar paste does not adhere to live skin cells,” says owner and founder Ashley Richardson. “We use an organic paste that’s comprised of just sugar, water and lemon juice so, in general, it’s a lot more gentle on the skin.” While Green City Beauty was cultivating its signature sugaring services, Naturale Salon (1606 Locust St., 267.559.0951, naturalesalon.com) was busy building a better manicure by eliminating artificial enhancements for more natural-looking nails. Featured services like the Repair & Renew Manicure, which uses rice water, volcanic silt and milk to draw out impurities, mimics that of their other treatments, which all use similar natural, organic ingredients to bring your nails back to life. If your nails aren’t the only thing that could use some rejuvenation, then head over to Le Reve Rittenhouse Spa

For an instant face-lift, try the hydrating Organic Mineral Skin treatment mask that uses a combination of ingredients, including fruit and plant extracts, mineral mud and seaweed for a glowing visage. The “fingertip face-lift” technique used for this treatment incorporates Eastern and Western philosophies like Chinese acupressure, ayurveda and reiki. Fishtown’s Parlour Hair + Skin (1339 Frankford Ave., 215.278.7613, parlourhairandskin.com) traces the origins of many of its services back to ancient techniques like ayurveda and organic ingredients. The Acne Balancing treatment, which includes neem, tulsi, comfrey, peppermint and Fullers Earth & Rose Hip Seed, is ideal for skin that’s acting up from seasonal products like sunscreen or spray-tan solutions. The decision to focus on natural products was an easy one for Parlour owner Kelly Hughes. “We should all be able to read and understand [the product ingredients] we use on our skin,” she says.

is a tiring system,” he says. “I have to be on Instagram, but it eats a lot of time. You can post, but you only have a fraction of a second to attract attention—there are too many things to look at, and that becomes very empty.” That’s why Frisoni’s sentiment of the classic rings so true: “Classics are the center and the soul of every collection. If you don’t have a great classic, then you have to generate one before you can express anything else.” Neiman Marcus, King of Prussia Mall, neimanmarcus.com

BRUNO FRISONI PHOTO BY ALESSANDRA D’URSA

“There [are] always the iconic pieces that generate the success of a brand,” says Bruno Frisoni, creative director of shoe, handbag and accessory brand Roger Vivier (rogervivier.com). “For Vivier, the buckle is our centerpiece, defining what will be a forever classic. It’s an element of recognition—it makes you a club member,” he says of the fashion house’s now legendary Strass buckle, which became famous 50 years ago after actress Catherine Deneuve donned a Vivier pump in her film Belle de Jour. When it comes to his inspiration, Frisoni certainly looks to the archives, but he’s consistently trying to reinvent the brand with a fresh perspective. “When you go back to the archives... it gives you new energy,” he explains. “That being said, I am also afraid of the archives—it can be a trap. Fashion is always changing, so you need to change too.” Frisoni knows he must be ahead of what people want, while also creating what they want now. Most recently, that want lies within Roger Vivier’s Sneaky Viv sneaker, which is available in a variety of silks and satins, and is crowned with the iconic buckle—in one form or another. Frisoni has scaled down his annual collections to two, rather than four. “Showing four collections a year was a struggle,” he explains. “We need to be more and more efficient, and we have less and less time. No one wants to wait,” says the designer. “To me, waiting generates desire. But if you make me wait for months, I’d be crazy. I’d pass.” The instant desire for the latest and greatest could be connected to the rise of social media, but Frisoni is not affected by the likes of Instagram or Facebook. “Instagram

The Rolex-Golf

CONNECTION Celebrating half a century of partnerships in professional golf, the ties between the game and the Swiss watchmaker run deep. By Mike Espindle

Nowhere was Rolex’s long-running association with professional golf more apparent than at the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia this spring, where Rolex has been a key sponsor since 1999. While the world watched the electrifying sudden-death victory of Spaniard Sergio Garcia over Brit Justin Rose, guests of Rolex enjoyed prime viewing opportunities; unmatched hospitality at the Rolex House near the first hole; as well as the company and insight of some of the game’s legends, who stopped by during the tournament. The scene was as dramatic as you might expect—chock full of exciting moments and memories. “When I was coming up,” former Masters champion Tom Watson shares, “I always admired the gold Rolex

watches of the top players.” The famously humble golfer, who won in 1977 and 1981, adds: “My goal was to treat myself to a Rolex after I made a million dollars in winnings.” Gary Player, the South African golf legend who was the first non-American to win the Masters in 1961 (he won again in 1974 and 1978), recalls: “Back then, I was taking on Arnold Palmer in his own house, so to speak, and the fans were— understandably—not in my corner.” Still, Rolex was always a welcoming presence for the feisty champion. While the Rolex-golf connection runs deep, some of the watchmaker’s most recent models unveiled at the Baselworld watch and jewelry show in Switzerland seem particularly apt for the links. New versions of the iconic Sky-Dweller, with its masterful fluted bezel, are now available in a white-gold bezel, steel and yellowgold combinations. Rolex’s beefy Sea-Dweller dive watch receives significant updates as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. With a new 43 mm size—sporting the iconic Rolex Cyclops date magnifier for the first time and a Cerachrom bezel—and waterproof to an astounding 4,000 feet, this timepiece can stand up to any wear and tear you might put in on the greens. Forever in BLUE JEANS Nicole Miller puts her own spin on a wardrobe staple. By Kristin Detterline

You know Nicole Miller for the figure-skimming cocktail dresses, billowy blouses and beach-chic resort looks, but it’s worth getting to know the designer’s denim collection. Launched earlier this year thanks to a design collab with Alpha

Garment Inc., fall brings a slew of styles including high-rise cuts, cropped hems, boyfriend jeans, flares and skinnies. It was a natural complement to Miller’s contemporary womenswear label, she says. “We had always dabbled in denim and novelty denim, and it had always received a great response, so I felt it was time to do a complete collection and give my customer more options,” says the designer. With most closets already stocked with skinny jeans, Miller says to try camouflage denim and baggier, distressed styles to pair with her fall separates like cheetah-print buttondowns and open-back velvet blouses. And like the rest of us, Miller admits that it’s difficult to part with a pair. “I have a hard time editing my denim wardrobe,” she says. “Denim only gets better with age.” From $198, The Bellevue; 4249 Main St.; nicolemiller.com

hilly’s fashionistas are in for a treat this fall now that South Moon Under has set up its fourth shop in the region, boasting every essential for your next on-trend ensemble this season (think dark grounded florals from Willow & Clay, classic plaids and Free People’s signature bohemian prints). Naturally, a new outpost means a fresh outfi tting for the store’s interior, which focuses on beach-chic environs with light-yet-bright hues reminiscent of those already scheduled vacation plans of yours for next summer. “We are so excited for this aesthetic, which slightly differs from our traditional style in our founding stores,” says store manager Hilary Thompson. The city’s closet-obsessed will want to move quickly on the brand’s wide selection of premium denim as it tends to have trouble staying on the shelves come fall, while those who received a save the date months ago can rest easy knowing that the store’s expanded collection of dresses is last-minute-shopping friendly. $10$300, King of Prussia Mall; southmoonunder.com

RAY OF HOPE Toby Strogatz wanted to do more than just make beautiful handbags. So the style-minded life coach and yoga guru set out to fuse the worlds of fashion and philanthropy with her accessories collection Mim & Ray. “We call it fashion with a purpose,” says Strogatz, who teamed up with KleinLife, a Philly nonprofit that enhances the quality of life for people of all ages and backgrounds, for her passion project. “Our ultimate goal is to empower as many people as possible.” Each bag is designed by the creative team at TobyStephen Designs Inc. and features wool detailing hand-knit by KleinLife’s senior members. The handbags are then finished in Italy by skilled artisans with a note tucked inside about the knitter. Strogatz was so inspired by KleinLife’s mission that she named Mim & Ray after Miriam and Raymond Klein, who established the organization in 1975. Statement totes are label standouts, with contrasting and complementary wool accents set against leather and alligator in fall-ready shades like black, navy, chocolate brown and lipstick red. Or reach for fanny packs adorned with tassels or wristlets splashed with “XOXO” and “Yes!” The metallic silver Jennifer Bag, named for Strogatz’s daughter, doubles as a conversation piece with its piercing blue eyes. “Mim & Ray handbags are not just an expression of great style,” says Strogatz. “It’s an expression of great humanity.” $275-$695, Joan Shepp, 1811 Chestnut St.; mimandray.com –Michelle Mass

The dining pavilion at the resort’s Cliffside Camp overlooks the confluence of the Blackfoot River and Elk Creek.

GIDDY UP As exquisite a blend of rusticity and luxury as may be found anywhere, The Resort at Paws Up has become a destination for many fun things since its inception in 2005—weddings, fly-fishing, cattle driving and lively family bonding among them. But this 37,000-acre property, 35 minutes outside Missoula, Mont., is rapidly becoming best known as a place to eat. There are good restaurants, of course—Pomp, for elevated American; Trough, for haunting huckleberry pancakes; and Tank, for bespoke cocktails with a mountain view—but the real reason epicureans make the trek is because Paws Up reigns as one of the foremost spots where toques like to go and cook. Among other delicious events, this year the resort started Cookbook Live, a series wherein big-time chefs visit and spend a few days showing you, up close, how they make their magic. Check the schedule and make a reservation; after a day on horseback, followed by a hot stone massage with rocks pulled from the Blackfoot River, you’re bound to have an appetite. TINY BUBBLES

An hour from Milan is the home of an under-the-radar sparkling-wine region that gives Champagne a run for its money. Intrigued? So were we...

Never say never and never say always,” says Paola Beghini. “Everything is possible.” Beghini was talking about the history of Monte Rossa winery, set in a beautiful 15th century villa. But, really, that statement could also apply to the other 115 wineries in Franciacorta, an Italian region in the heart of Lombardy at the foothills of the Alps that, despite a small footprint and low production, are turning out some of the world’s best sparkling wines (sorry, Champagne). As European wine denominations go, Franciacorta is a baby. It was in the ’50s when the idea of creating a sparkling-wine region was first discussed; the area already produced a number of excellent still wines. Although it wasn’t until 1995 when Franciacorta obtained the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin—the first Italian wine to be produced exclusively using bottle fermentation, like Champagne, to do so. Combine that with its limited availability outside of Italy—

although that is improving—and you’ll be forgiven for not being familiar with this elegant Italian sparkling wine, which is made from chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot blanc estate-only grapes. Once you taste it, though, you’ll never forget it. But if you want a truly unforgettable experience, why not go to Franciacorta? Its location an hour east of Milan in a roughly 77-square-mile area, bordered on one side by Lake Iseo and on the other by low mountains and sloping hillsides, means it’s not only easy to get to but, once you arrive, there’s plenty to do, visiting wineries notwithstanding. For a home base, L’Albereta (room rates from $310 per night, albereta.it), a luxury five-star Relais & Châteaux resort, sets the perfect tone. Housed in a former villa, the family-owned hotel combines Old World charm with modern touches, including contemporary sculptures scattered throughout the lush property. Each of the 57 suites has a different look and some include a private outdoor area. No matter your thoughts on breakfast

buffets, don’t miss it here, and not just for the tartas, crostatas and bombolini (that’s cakes, fruit tarts and doughnuts, to you non-Italian speakers). The view from the outdoor deck is stunning. If you’ve gotten friendlier with the buffet than you intended or overindulged at the hotel’s wonderful fine dining restaurant, LeoneFelice—chef Fabio Abbattista’s toasted wheat cappelletti pasta stuffed with rabbit is worth every calorie—there’s Espace Chenot Health Wellness Spa on the lower level that includes a pool, a gym and access to personal trainers. Off-site activities include horseback riding, wind surfing and boat rentals. The latter is best enjoyed with a glass of Franciacorta in hand as you take in the dramatic scenery. Getting thirsty? Lucky for you, Bellavista Winery (bellavistawine.it), from the same owners at L’Albereta, is nearby. Like at most of the region’s wineries, tours are

available by appointment. Fratelli Berlucchi (fratelliberlucchi.it) is another stellar winery set among historic ivy-covered buildings, some with 15th century frescoes. The Freccianera Rosa 2013 tops our list of musttry wines. “We like to keep the traditions,” says Tilli Berlucchi of her family’s winery. Nearby is Ronco Calino (roncocalino.it). What started as a passion project for husband-and-wife owners Paolo Radici and Lara Imberti Radici, now produces 70,000 bottles of Franciacorta a year, including a terrific brut aged for 30 months. “It’s important that people want to drink another glass,” says Lara of their wines. At Corte Bianca (corte-bianca.it), an organic and sustainably focused winery, owner Marina Tonsi used her architecture training to renovate a traditional farmhouse with the most advanced green architecture. The wines here, including a lush rosé made from 100 percent pinot noir grapes, reflect that same attention to detail. Just as important as the wine, though, is the region’s cuisine. At Polastri Maceler (polastrimaceler.it), a family-run butcher since 1840, you’ll fi nd the area’s best representations of cured meats, including creative new offerings such as a pork salumi flavored with—what else?—Franciacorta. At Cappuccini Resort (room rates from $190 per night, cappuccini.it), a restored 16th century monastery that includes 14 rooms and a spa, chef Piercarlo Zanotti offers a modern interpretation of local dishes. “My kitchen is easy,” he says in regards to his on-site garden, which supplies

many of the ingredients for his dishes, such as beet risotto with Parmesan gelato. It’s a similar scenario at Michelin-starred Due Colombe (duecolombe.com), where chef Stefano Cerveni fi nds inspiration in both the recipes of his grandmother and modern gastronomy. But perhaps it’s Monte Rossa’s Emanuele Rabotti, son of Paolo and Paola Rabotti, who started the winery in 1972 on the grounds of their historic villa, who sums up Franciacorta—the wine and the region—best. “Every year is a beautiful new experience,” he says.

This Michelin-starred restaurant is hidden on the 18th floor of a medical building—we were skeptical too—but step into this modern space and peruse the multipage cocktail menu, which charmingly tells the story of Chicago’s Irish-American influence, and you’ll settle in for a final toast to exploring the city’s many charms.

NAMASTE! Roll out the mats: International yoga fest Wanderlust is back in Philly. By Lexi Hill // Photography by Melissa Tilley

For the second year in a row, the world’s largest producer of yoga lifestyle events is coming to Philadelphia. Except this year, yogis can expect the daylong health and wellness gathering to be even better than 2016. Dubbed the globe’s first and only “mindful triathlon,” Philly joins 60 host cities (and counting) for Wanderlust 108 on Sept. 30 at the Navy Yard. Named for the spiritually sacred nu mber of 108, for which the individual numbers represent unity, wholeness and unlimited possibility, respectively, Wanderlust is the perfect setting to recharge and relax alongside

fellow yoga fans. The event begins with a 5-kilometer run or walk in partnership with Adidas, followed by a charged-up yoga flow class led by world-class instructors like Chelsey Korus, with beats by DJ Drez and a 30-minute meditation session led by Noah Levine. Wanderlust co-CEO Sean Hoess likens the event to a festival atmosphere with its “live DJ, craft vending, local foods and a wide variety of bonus activities to drop into. It’s maybe the only festival that you’ll leave feeling healthier than when you arrived.” New to the program this year is the “play all day” component,

which allows attendees to participate in additional yoga classes like AIReal Yoga and Acro Yoga, among others. However, if you’d rather catch your breath, you can swing by the Kula Marketplace to pick up Wanderlust’s signature vegetarian-friendly Wanderbowl before sitting down to enjoy a picnic with friends, or upgrade your yoga pants to a pair from Adidas x Wanderlust, a line of activewear created by the two partners. Another reason to feel good? For every ticket sold, Wanderlust is contributing $1.08 to No Kid Hungry in an effort to help end childhood hunger. Tickets from $40, 4747 S. Broad St., wanderlust.com

taking charge With her talent and film career firmly established, Elizabeth Olsen’s focus shifts to forging her path and making her own rules.

the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River, Elizabeth Olsen climbs onstage inside the iconic Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes. Looking old-school glam in a plunging blushcolored Miu Miu gown, she takes in the scene, smiling as the audience delivers its enthusiastic applause and Sheridan introduces the film. It is not Olsen’s first time at Cannes, but from her perspective, it might as well be. “The first time I was here, I didn’t soak it in,” says the actress during our beachside stroll the next day. “I was overwhelmed, and I don’t have very many memories of being present.” This time would be different, she determined, starting with the decision to clutch her pink heels in her hand while onstage. “During Sundance, I had a bit of a panic attack when we were onstage. You have all the lights on you, and there’s really no point of focus. I hate it. It freaks me out. So, I thought, ‘I’m going to take my shoes off.’ And I remember every moment,” she says. As not even a 2am post-premiere photo call manages to rattle the actress, you get the sense Olsen knows not only how to navigate the chaos that is the world’s most renowned film festival, but is also competently steering a career that, in the past seven years, has launched her to fame far beyond what maybe even she expected. “Now that I feel a bit more solid about what I’m making and I have a very clear intention for myself, I’m a happier person,” explains the 28-year-old. “I’ve started to figure out how I want to function as a human being in the world and balance it with work.” She may feel like she is only now coming into herself, but from the outside, it seems like Olsen has always had a strong sense of direction.

While the actress has, in the past seven years, made an impressive 18 films—ranging from wellreceived indies like Martha Marcy May Marlene to major blockbusters like Godzilla and The Avengers films—her love of acting and performing was established long before her 21st birthday. The youngest sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley made her on-screen debut at age 4 in her siblings’ films, before deciding at age 7 she would not pursue the same path as her famous sisters. “I did try and audition when I was younger. I thought, ‘Well that sounds fun. I see what my sisters do.’ I went on a few auditions, Spy Kids being the first one, and they asked me to read the script. It looked bigger than the Bible to me,” Olsen recalls. “I didn’t understand why I would ever read something that big. I realized I would miss out on after-school sports and forfeit things I enjoyed doing at a young age. My dad had me write a list of pros and cons, and the cons side was bigger. I decided to stick to my after-school activities.” Despite the 15-year hole in her résumé, Olsen never gave up acting. “The [activities] my family [came out to support] me in were probably painful to watch,” she laughs. “From ballet recitals to plays to some experimental things—it was constant. But [these] were hobbies, not a job.” They were, however, the things she cared about the most. After high school, Olsen enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she learned the discipline of the craft, even spending a semester at the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia. “All these teachers [were] trying to scare [us], letting [us] know that [acting] is hard and you’re going to be rejected 99 percent of the time. Every time someone said it to me, it was a challenge, like, ‘I’ll show you.’” That, she did. Olsen’s breakout role came as the titular character in Martha Marcy May Marlene, about a young girl who, after several

”Now that I feel a bit more solid about what I’m making and I have a very clear intention for myself, I’m a happier person. I’ve started to figure out how I want to function as a human being in the world and balance it with work.” years of living with a cult, manages to escape. The film, which garnered numerous critics’ awards and brought her to Cannes for the first time, launched a noteworthy career out of the gate. “I’m so lucky [director] Sean Durkin wanted to go with someone who had literally no film experience,” says Olsen. “I think the reason Sean liked the idea was because I didn’t know what I looked like on camera, and I didn’t care about what angle of my face looked good. It added to the awkwardness of Martha.” The experience, which Olsen says took place during a restless time in her personal life, cemented her love for acting. “My favorite thing about working and being on set as an actor is having to be so present in what you’re doing,” she says. “It’s such a relief—it’s almost meditative. The only thing that matters is the moment.” Her glorious debut was more luck than strategy, Olsen admits. She eagerly tried out for guest roles on TV procedurals like CSI and Blue Bloods early on in her career, reading every script that came her way. “[In the beginning] I was like, ‘What? You want to hire me? Sign me up!’ I was a mess,” she laughs. “But, now, there’s more of an intention behind it. I’m happy to go from one project to the next, but there has to be a reason to do it. And if there isn’t, then I’m going to be unemployed and figure out how to keep myself busy.” She was immediately drawn to no-nonsense FBI Agent Jane Banner in the thriller Wind River, which recently hit theaters and required learning how to operate a gun and assert authority in dangerous situations. “I’m scared of everything, and I get to play someone who is in control and confident,” she says. “To get to find that inside of you is a thrilling thing to do.” Olsen also looks for films with social commentary, like Ingrid Goes West, where she stars as a social media influencer who becomes the obsession of a mentally unstable fan. “I’m hoping to generate a better through line within the work I’m interested in and the work I find intriguing,” she says, “which doesn’t mean it’s all serious and poignant messages. I also think a sense of humor is important.”

The world of social media is still a mystery to Olsen, who only started exploring Instagram as a way to research her character. Even the idea of a public persona appears to perplex the actress, who, early on, received tips from her sisters about life in the spotlight. “They’re very tight-lipped—notoriously so—and I was not caring what I was saying [in interviews] because I’d assumed no one would read it,” says Olsen. “That’s when we’d have conversations. They’d say, ‘You know, even if you don’t think anyone’s going to read this article, someone might pull the quote later for [something else].’ It’s all part of how you hope someone interprets you, and how they frame who you are and the work you do.” That advice is now what keeps her from divulging much about her private life, which, according to news sources, currently includes musician boyfriend Robbie Arnett. “If it only involves me, then I’ll share it, but if it involves another party, ever, then I won’t,” she states. “I don’t want to tell anyone else’s story.” Olsen’s story is that she is laying down roots. For the past 2 ½ years, she has lived in Los Angeles, where she was raised, and feels like it is home. “In New York, I felt so confined to such a small space, and I would feel guilty if I wasn’t out all day,” she says. “[Here] I have friends over for dinner more nights than I don’t. I take advantage of having a deck. I cook more than I ever did in New York. I don’t feel bad about being in my home.” So much so that she eventually sees herself filling it with a family of her own. “I just bought a house for the first time. It’s very exciting. I’m renovating it right now, which has been so much fun and stimulating creatively,” she says. “But I was also thinking, ‘There’s this small room upstairs, which would be good for a kid.’ I don’t know where things will lead, but I do think about it in that way: ‘I think I could raise kids here.’” That, however, seems to be way off in the future. At this point in time, Olsen looks forward to another milestone. “Your 30s sounds like the best decade for a woman. I can’t wait!” she exclaims. “I still deal with so many anxieties of how I come across. I’ll go home at night, spinning with a guilt complex of, ‘Did I say something stupid to that person who I respect? Do they think I’m a freak?’ I don’t want to think like that anymore. What’s so beautiful about being older and wiser is you are sitting heavier in your shoes with your feet on the ground.” Or, as the case may be for Olsen, with your shoes clutched in your hand.

Rahel Solomon, who grew up in West Philadelphia and Upper Darby, assumed coanchoring duties this year at CBS3’s Eyewitness News This Morning and Eyewitness News at Noon. Not bad for someone who started in the biz only six years ago as a production assistant for NBC10. Solomon moved to the United States from the Sudan with her family when she was 3 years old. The Archbishop Prendergast High alum, who edited the school’s newspaper in Drexel Hill, got a finance degree from St. John’s University before switching her career track to journalism. After earning a master’s degree from Northwestern’s worldclass program, Solomon learned the ropes in Charleston, South Carolina; West Virginia; and Denver before returning to her hometown. MOVING ON UP

River to river, luxe new residences are reshaping the city skyline. By The Editors

Ride the Wave

The Waves Townhomes (formerly known as the Monaco Hotel) is a 27-townhome community just minutes away from the Margate and Ocean City boardwalks. Developed by PRDC Properties, each five-bed, fourbath, 2,600-square-foot unit features a garage, elevator, hardwood flooring and four (or more) decks in each home. PRDC Properties CEO, David Perlman, describes the project as one that “brings new energy and positive change to the boardwalk and city of Ventnor.” With ocean views in every townhouse, there’s no doubt residents will feel as though they’ve successfully escaped the hustle and bustle of city life in this sleek and modern beachfront oasis, priced at $699,000. PRDC Properties, a Philadelphiabased development group, is behind city projects such as Liberty Square, The Condos at Six20 N. 3rd St. and the recently opened Lincoln at 12th and Locust Street. 115 S. Little Rock Ave., Ventnor City, NJ, prdcproperties.com/thewaves

Waterfront Wonder The new luxury townhouse development, Views at Penn Treaty, is moving in south of Penn Treaty Park, overlooking the Delaware River and undoubtedly living up to its name. Developed by Alex Halimi and Saul Mazor of Gotham Bedrock LLC, a Brooklyn-based development company, buyers will be sure to enjoy New York City’s extravagance without the sky-high prices. “The reality of New York is that the cap rates are insane,” Halimi says. As their first venture in the City of Brotherly Love, Halimi and Mazor prove that Philadelphia can be equally as luxurious as the Big Apple: Each luxury townhome boasts high-gloss finishes and appliances, and ranges from 3,800 to 5,500 square feet. The property offers two-car parking, rooftop terraces and elevators for residents’ convenience. The townhomes are available for purchase in early 2018, with prices starting at $1.7 million. 1199 N. Delaware Ave., theviewsatpenntreaty.com

Innovative Elegance

Equipped with Scavolini custom kitchens, Poliform closets, outdoor terraces and even a virtual doorman for total privacy, 2110 Walnut is home to nine luxury condos starting at $2.8 million, ranging from 2,817 to 5,743 square feet. The design, which used the existing four-story brownstone at 2108 Walnut as the foundation for the nine-story stone and glass structure, makes this project a “flawless celebration of modern architectural design with a historic structure,” says Bruno R. Pouget, the lead broker for 2110 Walnut. Set to finish in the first quarter of 2018, this project’s power team includes architect Cecil Baker + Partners, developer Astoban Realty Group and interior designer Urban Space Development. Bonus: Outfit your new pad with custom audio-visual systems from Bang & Olufsen, located on the ground floor. 2110 Walnut St., astobanrealty.com/2110walnut continued…

Urban Tower The luxury high-rise at 1213 Walnut that boasts a 26-story, 300,000-square-foot apartment tower with 322 units is the ideal home for the sophisticated Philadelphian. Situated in Center City’s Midtown Village, this modern address is leasing now for studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows and open layouts. “To complement the vitality of the neighborhood,” Seth Shapiro, chief operating officer for The Goldenberg Group, says that they’ve “curated exceptional amenities to enhance the convenience and enjoyment of everyday life for residents.” Some of those amenities include indoor and outdoor fitness centers, an elevated private dog park and an outdoor terrace overlooking Walnut Street. This project marks the first partnership for The Goldberg Group, Hines and ASB Real Estate Investments. 1213 Walnut St., 1213walnut.com

Heart of the City

High-end apartment high-rise 3737 Chestnut is one more reason to make the move to rapidly changing University City. Completed in 2015 by Radnor Property Group LLC of Radnor, then sold to Korman and the Carlyle Group in July, the address continues to capture Philly’s attention (and not just for the views). Geared to the young professional set, this 25-story tower has it all: an upscale fitness center, cyber cafe, garden terrace and a rooftop sunbathing deck. 3737’s prime location provides its residents with easy access to public transportation and nearby stores and restaurants. Developer Dave Yeager says, “With the remarkable growth of the area, Radnor Property Group was excited to bring a new caliber of luxury housing to University City with 3737 Chestnut.” One- and two-bedroom units are available with full walk-in closets, hardwood flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows and parking spaces located underground. Apartments range from 545 to 1,000 square feet and start at $1,865 per month. 3737 Chestnut St., korman3737.com

The Name Game

With the city’s best shops and restaurants only minutes away, the exclusive boutique apartment building, The Alison, is located right in the center of Rittenhouse Square. Complete with luxury stainless-steel kitchen appliances like Sub-Zero and Wolf and Miel, these residences top off at $19,500 a month and range from 515 to 5,900 square feet. According to real estate developer Allan Domb, each of the 19 homes available boasts a unique design by Joanne Hudson and “features custom kitchens and bathrooms appointed in floor-to-ceiling marble,” making this condominium building an immediate standout. Another perk? Residents can enjoy the amenities at 10 Rittenhouse around the corner. 1805 Walnut St., thealison.com

GOING UP

Bathed in neutral hues and subdued metallic accents, a prominent couple build their art deco dream home high in the sky. By JoAnn Greco // Photography by Michael Hirsch

There it was, looming above as they rounded a corner of the 2,400-square-foot terrace—squat and shiny and thisclose. The steeped spire of One Liberty Place was a metaphoric cherry on top that sealed the deal for two homebuyers already enchanted by the possibilities of the expansive 46thfloor residence in its sister tower. “I thought the sight of it was just amazing,” laughs the distaff side of the couple. “I felt like Spider-Man.” Sold! Th is prominent couple decided to relocate from Rittenhouse Square for the chance to put their stamp on the completely raw space at Two Liberty Place, which grew

to 5,550 square feet when they combined three apartments. In 2009, they moved into their new residence, opening a custom front door that had been stained a dark hue, adorned with a silver knocker and fl anked by two alabaster sconces. Inside, Philadelphia-based interior designer Colby Cauchon Lakhmna and carpentry company Fab Dubrunfaut Woodworking crafted an oval foyer that serves as the perfect introduction to what waits beyond. Shimmering silver wallpaper plays off of a silver, ebony and gold mosaic tile fl oor, while a geometric brass chandelier that once graced a Parisian hotel hangs continued…

...continued from a ceiling painted in silver leaf. Next, the designers worked on composing a setting for the couple’s one-of-a-kind art deco furnishings and accent pieces. They pulled the entryway’s glittering tones throughout the home to add bling to the taupes, ivories and grays of the master suite and its twin dressing rooms, the stainless- and granite-clad kitchen, and the lavish bathrooms. The subdued palette takes a back seat to the vividly hued art and collectibles, which range from an original painting by Bob Dylan (the couple are huge fans) to works from the French ceramics workshop, Longwy, whose creations resemble cloisonné. And while the diamantine sparkle of the couple’s collection of Daum and Lalique crystal ensures a cool elegance, pops of purple, wide-planked walnut fl ooring, and a museum’s worth of built-in cabinetry crafted from exotic woods like Macassar ebony, Swiss pear wood and pommele veneer add warmth and texture to the home. continued…

WEDDINGS GR AND ROMANCE Perennial provocateurs Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren have earned a loyal following for their avant-garde designs. Brides can now look runwayready thanks to the recently debuted Viktor&Rolf Mariage collection (produced in partnership with Justin Alexander), which features fashion-forward flourishes like tulle volants, embroidered layered tulle “flowerbombs,” flocked sequins, jumpsuits and bold bows that result in sophisticated silhouettes. “We have always been fascinated with this iconic dressing—creating special moments and the storytelling it entails,” the designers say. A bride fitted in highconcept couture is just the thing to kick off your happily ever after. $4,000-$12,000 –Phebe Wahl

WEDDINGS something new

Table-number displays are pulling double duty as centerpieces.

If you were wowed by the decor at the many Philadelphia weddings you attended this summer (and who didn’t?), chances are event planner Petah Bashano was the man behind it all. Often, florals come first. “Each wedding requires different materials depending on the overall aesthetic,” says the Havertown native and Art Institute of Philadelphia graduate. “We may choose boxwood for a modern garden design, thick ivy for a whimsical English garden design, cedar boughs and acacia for a forest theme.” Those fresh materials will go on to fill table centerpieces and cover huppahs and, more recently, seating assignment displays that favor greens over gardenias. Forget tented place cards lined up like soldiers on fresh-pressed linens—or even calligraphy-covered mirrors with the couple’s initials scrawled in the center—and instead imagine picking your table number from a foliage wall accented by ribbons, flowers or jewels. Bashano warns that lighting is key to bringing these green screens to life. “Foliage walls are mysterious and a bit sexy, especially when well-lit,” he says. “The juxtaposition of an overwhelming masculine element like a wall of greenery in a predominantly feminine wedding reception can add an interesting balance to the room’s design.” 865 Sussex Blvd., Broomall, 484.472.6335, petahbashano.com –Hannah Hershberger

Change of a Dress

Carolyn Zinni comes from a long line of Philly stylists—the Zinni family has been known for dressing local women of all ages for special occasions since 1946 at their namesake East Passyunk shop, Zinni’s. Now, daughter Carolyn is continuing that legacy, bringing high-fashion bridal gowns to the Avenue. She takes a nod from her roots, giving brides a modernmeets-elegant bridal-shop vibe. “Buying a wedding gown is an experience, not a transaction,” she says. “I work with each bride personally, taking time to learn about her, her love and the inspiration for her wedding day.” Brides-to-be can expect all styles of gowns from modern princess to traditional silhouettes, with designer names like Justin Alexander and Laine Berry filling the racks. “Having dressed young women [at Zinni’s] for their very first eighth grade dance, then again for homecomings and proms, I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to now dress them for their greatest dance yet—their wedding dance.” 1725 E. Passyunk Ave., 215.468.5000, carolynzinni.com –Jessica Green

Some settings in Philadelphia have the power to transport you to other times and places. With its grand facade, marble columns and iconic glass dome, the RitzCarlton Philadelphia could easily be mistaken for a Roman temple instead of one of the city’s chicest Fanciful floral walls and custom cakes offer hotels and most exclusive places the finest finishing touches at the Ritzto host a wedding. Still reveling Carlton Philadelphia. in the newness of last year’s $50 million renovation, including By Kristin Detterline the Grand Ballroom’s subdued shades of gray and centerpiece crystal chandelier, the Ritz-Carlton is touting a few first-to-Philly wedding exclusives. The property partnered with Nicol Floral Design to create their own petal-packed flower walls for brides to enjoy on the big day. The Ritz-Carlton has also sweetened the dessert offerings by teaming with Van Earl French Jr., chef and owner of Langhorne’s Van Earl’s Cakes and contestant on the Food Network’s Cake Wars, for custom cake flavors and designs. Brides and grooms meet French after their private tasting with chef Patrick Morrison for the main menu roughly six weeks before the wedding. Senior Catering Sales Manager Dayna M. Leaventon (whose favorite cake flavor is sweet potato cake with cream cheese buttercream and salted caramel buttercream) says it’s the Ritz-Carlton’s ability to offer such elevated personalized service that sets them apart in the Philly wedding world. “From the beginning to the end of planning, we do everything possible to make our couples feel special,” she says. 10 Avenue of the Arts, 215.523.8000, ritzcarlton.com/philadelphia

With a new town center, hot shops and upscale dining, King of Prussia has quickly become one of the most popular Philly suburbs. But behind all the new, a mainstay still shines, especially for brides and grooms. Valley Forge Casino Resort does it all: From the pre- and post-parties to the actual wedding, couples and their guests never have to leave the resort. “We have it all under one roof,” says Lani Baird, executive director of sales for the suburban staycation hot spot, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. “In addition to the reception venue, we offer ceremony sites, overnight accommodations for out-of-town guests, nightlife venues to keep the party going after the reception ends and restaurants perfect for rehearsal dinners the night before.” After dancing the night away as newlyweds, couples will be pleased to walk into upgraded accommodations (Valley Forge Casino is home to some 483 rooms and suites), complete with strawberries and Champagne, and passes for them and their guests to lounge at the beach club the next morning. “Valley Forge Casino Resort loves everything about weddings,” says Baird. “We want to be a part of starting a wedding celebration the right way.” 1160 1st Ave., King of Prussia, 610.354.8118, vfcasino.com

Elevated plates and toast-worthy spirit tastings turn fall wedding receptions into grand culinary experiences. By Jessica Tzikas

Choosing your location isn’t easy. As the backdrop to your entire day, the venue you choose also determines the food, the décor and the overall vibe of your wedding. But here in Philly, local sites have stepped up their game, offering brides and grooms a bounty of options to please any taste. This fall, venues are focused on food. At Rittenhouse’s Sofitel Philadelphia (120 S. 17th St., 215.569.8300, sofitel-philadelphia.com) Executive Chef Edward Hancock has joined the mix, creating new menus full of seasonal veggies and herbs, plus honey straight from the hotel’s rooftop-garden beehives. But beyond the palatability, the Sofitel has turned charitable—2017 brides can now rest easy knowing that $1 for every plate served at their wedding is going toward Broad Street Ministries to provide service to homeless and at-risk locals.

...continued And while Cescaphe (215.238.5750, cescaphe.com) venues have always been known for their fare, this fall, they’re focusing on the liquor. “Brides and grooms are spending a lot of time finding new ways to make their cocktail hours more interactive for their guests,” says Joe Volpe, founder and CEO of Cescaphe Event Group, whose stable of locations includes Tendenza, Vie, Water Works, Atrium at Curtis Center, Down Town Club and Cescaphe Ballroom. “One upgrade we love is adding a special tasting station to your event—we work with local sommeliers, brew masters and whiskey experts to add a fun, but educational, way for guests to enjoy fine wines, craft beers and whiskies that they may have never tried before.”

But before the food is served, the first impression is dependent on the locale. Acting as the backdrop to a majority of the day-of photos, couples tying the knot at The Sofitel can look forward to pictures in front of the famous lobby artwork and the library wall in Libertè Lounge, while The Bellevue gives photos a hint of elegance with their dramatic staircase. “It’s breathtaking every time we see a bride greeting family and friends at the base of the marble and hand-worked iron elliptical staircase,” says Pina Purpero, general manager of The Bellevue.

Now in its 21st year, Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance puts the pedal to the medal in September.

HAUTE WHEELS Although Malvern’s Radnor Hunt is best known on the Main Line as a hub of the blueblooded equestrian set, each September some of the world’s most coveted collectible cars put it in park to vie for Best of Show in the Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance. The three-day event kicks off on Friday with a barbecue and features a 150-car road rally through Chester County horse country and a black-tie gala on Saturday. But Sunday is when the automotive splendor is on full display for The 100 Motor Cars of Radnor Hunt, a world-class automotive competition on par with the Pebble Beach and Amelia Island Concours. “This year we’re featuring the race cars of Roger Penske and Abarth automobiles,” says Mike Tillson, chairman and founder of the Radnor Hunt Concours. According to Tillson, this year’s must-see model is the 1960 Porsche Abarth—a collaboration between Porsche and Italian coach builder Carlo Abarth—with only 21 cars known to have been produced. IN THE LERCH By Marni Prichard Manko

A former Wall Streeter turned Kentucky Derby milliner turned jewelry designer, West Conshohocken’s Lisi Lerch has made her mark on the accessories world for the past 15 years with her big and bold earrings, playful necklaces and even monogrammed seashells. “My inspiration originally came from my grandmother. She didn’t have a jewelry box— she had a jewelry chest,” she laughs. A favorite of Charleston’s most fab ladies on Bravo’s Southern Charm (the Cameran earring is even named after one of the show’s regulars), her oversized earrings make a major statement thanks to Lerch’s combination of delicate metals and brightly colored beads. Although tassel earrings may be having a moment in 2017, these bulky baubles have been her bestseller for five years and counting and now come in over 30 colors. New for fall is the launch of her Real McCoy Collection gem ring line, the first being a 3-carat aquamarine and pink spinel stunner set in 14k gold. There’s also a move to men’s accessories with a line of ties and critterinspired cuff links. “We’ve been working on the samples for the ties and cuff links for a few years now, but took a while to perfect it,” she says. “My ties are smart and fun. Each one has its own story. Even though business and formalwear for guys is very standard, nothing expresses a man’s character like his tie.” Louella, 1012 W. Lancaster Ave.; lisilerch.com

Part wine school, part perfect place for a ladies’ night out, Bryn Mawr’s new What Am I Drinking?! dials down the intimidation factor for oenophile novices to learn about wine. “Thanks to buttoned-up sommeliers, high-priced auctions, extra-specifi c wine descriptions, fancy lingo and rating systems, the world of wine now seems an awful lot like an elite club,” says owner Serena Zelezny. Here, everyone is welcome at classes about which wines are fi t for the season, styles of pinot noir from around the world or a side-by-side blind examination of boxed and bottled wines. Fall classes to look out for include a September session on the red grape grenache (in honor of International Grenache Day) and a series on Pennsylvania and Virginia wines in October. 28 Summit Grove Ave., whatamidrinking.com –MPM

In her debut novel, The One That Got Away ($15, Hachette Books), the Main Line’s own Leigh Himes explores the heady question we all grapple with: What if? “I was sitting in my kitchen in my bathrobe, flipping through a magazine, when I saw a photograph of a handsome, wealthy man I almost dated years before,” says the former publicist. “It got me thinking about choices and how they can affect the rest of our lives. A few weeks later, I started writing.” The end result is a tome about a woman who gets the chance to reboot her life. Situated in the heart of historic downtown Phoenixville sits Taste, Sand Castle Winery’s new, highly stylized vegan restaurant designed by famed NYC designer Dean Arcuri. Leap years away from heaping platefuls of raw kale and grilled portabellos, Taste uses gourmet products from Herbivorous Butcher—the world’s first meatless, plant-protein-based butcher—and chef Theo Charitos’ plates are decidedly of the this-tastes-just-like-Kobe variety. “We sought to form a concept that provides a savory, gourmet menu which satisfies both the die-hard and reluctant vegan,” says managing partner Chad Sletten. Standout dishes include a blackened rib-eye with crispy potatoes and bourbon ketjap, and Portuguese chicken and sausage with black bean cake and braised baby kale. ...continued “Philadelphia is a mecca for craft beer, and the Main Line is a strong pillar of the community,” says Chris Young, founder of Bryn Mawr’s new Tin Lizard Brewing Company (1000 W. Lancaster Ave., tinlizardbrewingco.com) and a mainstay in the craft beer scene. Tin Lizard offers up house beers and decidedly upscale but traditional bar food. Try the melodic Fuhr Elise Weissbier (named for one of their bartenders) or Kurant Cider Earth, a crisp blend of fermented apple juice with 100 percent Mosaic hops.

For anyone who originally questioned the seemingly strange combo of craft beer and Latin-inspired pub food, Berwyn’s La Cabra Brewing (642 Lancaster Ave., lacabrabrewing.com) quickly shut the naysayers down. Housed in an old grist mill with 130-year-old stone walls, diners can munch on honey chipotle wings or some luscious starters like the pork belly that’s slow-cooked for 12 hours sous-vide with amber kölsch.

PHOTOS COURTESY TIRED HANDS BREWING CO.

Under the tutelage of owner, brewer and James Beard Award-nominee Jean Broillet IV, Ardmore’s Tired Hands Brewing Company (tiredhands. com) has become the go-to place for discerning suburban beer lovers. “While we get beer geeks on pilgrimage from around the country and the world, local residents are the lifeblood of Tired Hands,” says Broillet. Split into three locations, the Tired Hands Fermentaria (35 Cricket Terrace) offers a continuously changing beer menu with plates of octopus tacos or lamb gnocchi to boot; at the Brew Cafe (16 Ardmore Ave.), it’s all about beer served alongside traditional Belgian and French fare; and a couple doors down from the cafe is the newly opened General Store that boasts T-shirts and Tired Hands goodies galore (20 Ardmore Ave.).

Over in Phoenixville, the new Crowded Castle Brewing Company (242 Bridge St., crowdedcastle.com) is a study in what happens when 10 friends and family have a collective love of beer, start home-brewing together to much acclaim and then move on to co-found a brewery. With a seven-and-a-half-barrel brew system crafting 12 unique beers, their emphasis is placed on creating a beer for every type of taste. But those are just a handful of the endless craft breweries that dot the suburbs. Other notables include

the Conshohocken Brewing Company (739 E. Elm St., conshohockenbrewing.com) situated on the Schuylkill River Trail; Perkasie’s Free Will Brewing Company (410 E. Walnut St., freewillbrewing.com); and Malvern’s new Locust Lane Craft Brewery (50 Three Tun Road, locustlanecraftbrewery.com), which has local food trucks conveniently parked right outside. As for the perennial question about how the brewers come up with the often outlandish names for their brews, it comes down to inspiration. “The theme I’ve used for naming beers is art,” says Young. “Our pilot batch of beer was called Cloths of Heaven, an Irish red ale that pays homage to a W.B. Yeats poem. Our current American IPA on draft is Resistance is Futile, which is a nod to Star Trek, and our ESB is named The Sacred and Profane, inspired by lyrics from a Dire Straits song.” We’ll toast to that.

HIGH STEAKS At his polished French dining room, Townsend, chef-owner Townsend Wentz shows a deft touch with delicate creatures like rabbits, scallops and snails. But last spring, he indulged his love of beef in a big way. “I thought to myself, if I’m going to do beef, it’s got to be côte de boeuf [the show-stopping, thick-cut, bone-in rib steak]. For the French, it’s classic,” says Wentz, who sources 30-day dry-aged sides of grass-fed, grainfinished Creekstone beef from LaFrieda Meats, cuts them into 32-ounce steaks, slow roasts each slab with thyme and black pepper, and finishes them to order in a blue steel skillet. Townsend’s powder-blue-shirted servers present the steak whole before it’s whisked back to the kitchen, carved into medium-rare, umami-rich morsels and plated with seasonal vegetables like heirloom tomatoes and Jersey corn salad in early fall, and pickled chanterelles and roasted parsnips as the weather cools. You won’t find a better steak in the city. $96 for two, 1623 E. Passyunk Ave., 267.639.3203, townsendrestaurant.com –Adam Erace

“The Japanese have been making serious noise in the world of whisky over the course of the last decade.” –BRANDON A. RATCLIFFE

Davio’s is shaking up a variety of libations featuring Japanese whisky.

WHISKY

TANGO As Japanese whisky takes the spirits world by storm, seek out these cool cocktail spots to sample the good stuff. By Brian Freedman

fter spending a spectacular week in three Japanese cities—Tokyo, Sapporo and Sendai—this past spring with Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., one of the world’s top producers of the lavish liqueur, I am more convinced than ever that the moment has finally arrived for Japanese whisky to get the credit it so richly deserves in Philadelphia, and clearly, I’m not alone. Top restaurants and bars across the region have begun stocking their beverage programs with excellent bottlings from producers around Japan, and with good reason. “The Japanese have been making serious noise in the world of whisky over the course of the last decade,” says Brandon A. Ratcliffe, assistant general manager of Davio’s King of Prussia (200 Main St., 610.337.4810, davios.com/kop). “It’s not Scotch and it’s not bourbon... it drinks very beautifully in its own right, and with such a foreseeable shortage on the world stage due to everyone catching on [to the trend], it makes complete sense to round out our whisky selection with

some of the finest Japanese [whiskies] available.” From Nikka’s excellent Yoichi single malt and their epic Taketsuru 17-year-old to standouts from Suntory like Yamazaki 12-year-old and more, Davio’s is confident in the future of Japanese whisky. So, too, is Rittenhouse’s Friday Saturday Sunday (261 S. 21st St., 215.546.4232, fridaysaturdaysunday.com), which features by-the-glass Suntory Toki—“which is blended from the three distilleries owned by Suntory to make a light, mild, grassy whisky,” explains bartender Paul MacDonald—as well as in their Well-Tempered cocktail, alongside gin, vermouth, Suntory Toki, elderflower and besk. And Hop Sing Laundromat (1029 Race St., hopsinglaundromat.com) offers a wide range of excellent ones, as expected: Look for transcendent cocktails from this Chinatown hideaway that include Yamazaki 18-year-old, Hakushu 12-year-old and Suntory Toki. In addition, Yamazaki 12-year-old is available for the amazing price of $10.10 during happy hour. You can expect to see more and more great Japanese whisky being poured throughout the city and beyond. Its time has come.

The Bearded Chef Michael Solomonov talks vegan falafel, charitable collaborations and his newest claim to culinary fame: a James Beard Award. By A.D. Amorosi

From left: Israeli cuisine rules at Society Hill’s Zahav; Michael Solomonov

If any Philadelphian deserves a James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, it’s Michael Solomonov, who finally snagged the culinary nod in May. From elevating earthy Israeli cuisine to an inventive art form with the opening of his first restaurant, Zahav, to penning his first cookbook (Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking) with partner Steven Cook (cooknsolo.com), to filming his documentary, In Search of Israeli Cuisine, with director Roger Sherman that’s being released on DVD this fall, the award-winning chef ’s talents across all platforms are certainly a force to be reckoned with. In addition to these individual projects that alone are worthy of the glittering prize, Solomonov also turned hummus into a Center City staple with the unveiling of Dizengoff; developed Federal Donuts and Dizengoff in other cities; and opened Rooster Soup Co. diner with the aid of Broad Street Ministry Hospitality Collaborative, whose profits help care for Philly’s homeless.

What does a Beard do for you, both professionally and personally? It’s more for Steve [Cook] and I and our restaurant group CookNSolo—something for the team. It also happened on the anniversary of Israeli Independence Day, so it’s a win for Israel too. People are captivated by the documentary and the customized food tours that Roger Sherman is running in Israel this fall. What’s in store for the future of that program? My friend Avi Tsabari, who is in the film and runs the culinary school there, is a big part of this. It’s a lot of back-and-forth travel, but well worth it. How is the partnership with Broad Street Ministry going at Rooster Soup Co.? Don’t forget we opened Goldie (a vegan falafel shop), too, above Rooster at the same time. Each time we open something, we’re learning everything over again. The Ministry partnership means listening to team members concerned with helping people and is our move into the nonprofit world. That’s a win-win for me. Plus, Rooster’s food is great. You’re opening Federal Donuts and Dizengoff out of town. How do you feel about the Philly food scene? Objectively speaking, there’s an energy to this city—its food and the culture of that food—that hasn’t been here in a long time. I’m jazzed.

MICHAEL SOLOMONOV PHOTO BY STEVE LEGATO

GENT

What’s the least generic answer you can give about winning a James Beard Award? My award was at the end of a three-anda-half-hour ceremony, and I spent all that time trying not to look like I cared.

TRAIN OF THOUGHT The Roots’ Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter talks comedy, kids’ shows and working with Jimmy Fallon. By A.D. Amorosi Photography by Monte Isom

19 2 PHILADELPHIA STYLE SEPTEMBER 2017

M O D E R N L U X U R Y. C O M

f anybody has something to say about Philly, it’s the co-founder and mouthpiece of The Roots, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter. Along with celebrating the 30th anniversary of the start of his creative partnership with The Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson while both were in attendance at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the 10th anniversary of the Roots Picnic in June, Trotter and Questlove are digging into new projects. The twosome’s Passyunk Productions has just signed with Amazon Prime to do two online TV programs— an animated children’s series and a documentary-like show based on Shea Serrano’s The Rap Yearbook ($20, Abrams). “We always had the desire to do something that spoke to young people,” says Trotter, considering the cartoon showcase. Along with putting the finishing touches on The Roots’ 17th album, Endgame (“our most amazing and timely,” he says), for late autumn, and developing the score for Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, Trotter is marching a few other career paths: voice-over work for the NBA and NFL draft; a solo album called The Talented Mr. Trotter; and a memoir to rival his pal Questlove. He started a standup comedy series, Delirious, at Philadelphia’s Punch Line comedy club that he’s not only bringing to other Punch Line clubs but recording for an upcoming DVD this fall. “I’ve learned a lot from Jimmy,” says Trotter about fronting the versatile house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “I know that I don’t seem like a funny guy, but for the last eight years, five days a week, I’ve worked on a comedy sketch show, whether it was Jimmy’s Late Night or The Tonight Show. Some of his talents had to rub off on me.”
