From logo tees to suggestive knit hats, women’s rights have been front and center in the news this year. We’ve been celebrating girl power since 2012, when Philadelphia Style launched its Women of Influence feature in our Late Spring edition. Equal parts style and substance, it was our chance to recognize women who were having a moment in Philadelphia. And all kinds of women meant all kinds of moments. Now in its fifth year, we’ve talked to CEOs, finance gurus, fitness mavens, and philanthropists. There have been newscasters, government officials, and nationally recognized chefs. The cover stars have been just as impressive, from NBC’s veteran reporter Andrea Mitchell to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson.

Tamron Hall, formerly of NBC’s Today show, cohosted an afternoon tea with us in

2015. On paper, their ages, backgrounds, professions, experiences, and paths to success couldn’t have been more different. But what has always linked the dozens of women we’ve interviewed for this feature is their unwavering ambition and shared mission to make Philadelphia a better place. They are influencers in every sense of the word.

This issue’s cover star, Patti LaBelle, has been having a moment that’s lasted for five decades. We caught up with the mega-talented multihyphenate to talk about her new album and what’s ahead in 2017. At 73 years young, the singer has never looked better.

In the pantheon of famous Philadelphians, LaBelle certainly ranks among the top--especially for continuing to call Philly home when the siren songs of New York or LA could have lured her away years ago.

This year’s Women of Influence shoot was held at one of my favorite city locations, the gorgeous Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia.

Steeped in history and covered in marble, it’s like stepping inside a Roman temple that just happens to have a luxury hotel inside. Coincidentally, our shoot date also happened to be International Women’s Day, March 8. Here at Philadelphia Style, I’d like to think that we are toasting to phenomenal women not just for one day or in one issue but all year long. We still have so many stories left to tell.

From the women’s marches that took place all over the world on January 21 to A Day Without a Woman in March, our Women of Influence Issue could not have come at a more relevant time in the national conversation.

This same discussion informed many of our interviews with the six Philadelphia women we interviewed for our annual feature.

For women, this generally means scheduling regular health checkups, routine Pap smears and mammograms, bone mineral testing while taking preventative care against things like HPV, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, and, overall, doing what is in the best interest of your body.”

Outtakes from Velasquez: “Vince talked about the serious Tommy John surgery he had on his arm while still in high school and how the surgery and its long recovery period tested him. Perhaps a blessing in disguise, the surgery forced him to make an active choice to commit to baseball.”

Phillies phanatic: “My family have been hardcore Phillies fans since I was a kid. My dad wrote the book Occasional Glory: The History of the Philadelphia Phillies.

“We love Atlantic City and consider it to be an extension of our home in Philadelphia,” says Jose Garces. In fact, the famed Philly chef loves AC so much that he’s back for a second time in town, following a successful stint at the short-lived Revel Casino Hotel. Garces found his opportunity to “start fresh” at Tropicana, in the midst of its own fresh start with an ongoing $100 million renovation. His trio of concepts—Okatshe, Olón, and Bar Olón—not only add another dimension to the AC dining scene but mark a new culinary style for the chef: sushi. “Okatshe is my playful, modern take on traditional Japanese izakaya,” says Garces.

“I traveled to Japan twice and fell in love with the flavors and simplicity. Of course, it also made sense to work with the fresh seafood at the Shore.”

Besides sushi, there are small plates, yakitori, and ramen to sample along with 50 types of sake. At Olón, Garces gets back to his Ecuadorian roots with a 43-seat ceviche bar, five kinds of empanadas, and wood-fired Wagyu skirt steak. “Education is probably the most important aspect for our product,” says Shelby Zitelman, CEO of Soom. “If we educate our consumers, they will want to buy the product even more, because they know the health benefits.”

Shelby and her two sisters, Jackie and Amy, saw a void in the market for healthy cooking ingredients and got the idea to market mineral-rich tahini stateside from Jackie’s husband, Omir, who was in the business in Israel.

“We’re originally from Maryland, but chose Philly because there’s a vibrant food scene, our target customers are here, and it’s affordable,” says Shelby. “Plus the restaurants here are very accessible, from High Street on Market to Tredici Enoteca.” Most of the production is done in Israel and then shipped to Philly, where

Who are your baseball heroes?

“My dad is a big [memorabilia] collector and when I was younger, he took me to a lot of convention center signings. I met tons of players: Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson. But my all-time favorite guy growing up was Ken Griffey Jr.” You’ve been described as a pitcher who wears his emotions on his sleeve. “Things happen for a reason and you sometimes have to let it out. But it’s a matter of controlling my inner self. My dad says to focus on my breathing. It’s amazing how much breathing takes over the mind and body.”

You’ve had your share of injuries. What’s the plan to stay strong? “I work out with a band to strengthen the little muscles in the arm. The arm is the moneymaker, so I have to do whatever it takes to protect it.”

We hear you like to golf in your free time. “That’s my getaway. If I’m having a bad day, I’ll play a round of golf and turn it around.”

Tell us about your tattoos. “The right arm represents my Catholic beliefs. The left arm is more my warrior side.”

Words to live by? “If you’re ready, you don’t have to get ready.”

In Pennsylvania Stories— Well Told, former Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine journalist William Ecenbarger presents a dozen unique, offbeat tales about the Keystone State. Here, he talks about driving with author and Reading native John Updike and touring Eastern State Penitentiary.

What was the inspiration for the book?

“A couple of people had approached me over the years to put together some of my best Inquirer articles into a book. And that included my former editor, Art Carey, and my

One of Pennsylvania’s most unusual places is Fairmount’s Eastern State Penitentiary, regarded as the world’s first true penitentiary, and where Ecenbarger accidentally got locked in a cell.

You dedicate a chapter to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. How would you describe this 450-mile road in three words? “Root of history.

The turnpike was the original US superhighway, and there was never anything like it before.”

Tell us about your time with John Updike.

“He was very congenial and had a nice sense of humor. He was a little bit reluctant at first— his mother set up the interview with me—but

then as he got going he was quite enthusiastic. He drove my car so I could take notes.”

If you penned a book called Philadelphia— Well Told, what’s one story that would make the cut? “I wrote a story about Eastern State (for the Inquirer) when it was getting ready to open to the public. It was a cold February day, and we got locked in Willy Sutton’s cell. This was before the age of cell phones. So we had no way to get out. We waited an hour before someone found us.”

The retail world knows Warby Parker for its stylish, affordable glasses. The charity world recognizes the label for its impactful Buy a Pair, Give a Pair program. In the Phillysphere, the talk is always about how a couple of Wharton guys turned an idea born in a computer lab into a bonafide brand with 50 stores stretching from Canada to Miami. Seven years later, Warby Parker marked a full-circle moment this spring by opening a Walnut Street boutique steps from where cofounder and co-CEO Dave Gilboa lived during the early days. “Philadelphia was the birthplace of the company, so it gives us the warm fuzzies to be back in town,” says Gilboa.

Back when Kelsey MacLean was shopping for clothes for her soon-to-be-born son, she went into her country club’s gift shop, looking for a teeny shirt embroidered with the club’s logo. What she found instead were fashion-forward, miniature versions of adult clothing, even down to the use of tech fabrics.

“I was disappointed,” says MacLean. “When I asked for something a bit more tasteful and made from cotton, I was told that the golf apparel industry did not provide that type of clothing for babies and young children.” Enter the inspiration for her eponymous

Kelsey MacLean and Fore Kids Golf, luxury fashion lines she started in 2013 and headquartered in Kennett Square.

Both labels show clothes that are designed primarily for babies and toddlers, and she only uses high-quality textiles such as 100-percent pima cotton. Today, her garb is sold in clubs around the world, including Ardmore’s famed Merion Golf Club (249 Ardmore Ave.,610-642-5600; meriongolfclub.com).

Although her forte is childrenswear, MacLean has also created a sweet niche for herself by taking those same

sparkling 73 years young in May, Patti LaBelle, Philly’s Godmother of Soul—be it music or food—has more on her plate than at any time in her five-decades-long career. The fact is, she looks better than ever doing it.

“And God bless to that,” says LaBelle, with quiet assurance.

LaBelle is looking forward to even more blessings with the May release of her first album in 10 years. Titled Bel Hommage, the smoky jazz recording is a joint venture between Sony Red and her own label, GPE Records, and the first of several new albums to come. The Grammy Award-winning singer herself says the album is “something you’d never expect from Patti.”

What we have come to expect-—in no small part thanks to the “Patti LaBelle Sweet Potato Pie” viral video in November 2015-— is the singer’s double life as a celebrity cook. She’s furthering her culinary connection to Walmart by developing the Patti’s Good Life trademark and bringing new dishes to the table. Along with readying her third season of the Cooking Channel’s Patti LaBelle’s Place this spring, she’s published her fourth cookbook, Desserts LaBelle: Soulful Sweets to Sing About. She is in talks with fellow Philly pal producer-director Lee Daniels about appearing in his hit Fox series, Empire, again as well as having “LaLa” (“that’s what he calls me”) in his new Fox show, Star. All that, she adds, happens with the aid of her son, manager Zuri Edwards. “He’s as shy and quiet as me, but

with a clearer head,” she says with a laugh. “Great manager or not— and he’s watched me through them all—we still fight like mother and son. To tell you the truth, sometimes I’m willing to fight even when I’m wrong. Just something about me. I want to give people a run for their money.”

LaBelle is able to give everyone—her son, ex-husband Armstead Edwards, who executive-produced Bel Hommage and came up with the jazz concept, and her adoring public—a run for their money because of how career possibilities have expanded for women over the years, regardless of age.

“It’s not so much about hustling. I was always too shy to hustle or be pushy. I believe now is a time of greater, more diverse opportunities for women—and in my case, black women—to do it all and do it all well. I have been doing this now for over 50 years, and it seems as if the older I get, the more comes on my plate.”

LaBelle confesses that her shyness goes back as far as her childhood days singing in the Beulah Baptist Church Choir in Southwest Philadelphia. This may be part of the reason that she still calls the suburbs of Philadelphia home, avoiding the glare of Los Angeles (“too boring”) or New York City (“too fast”). “I’m not about going to parties. I’m very laid back. Philly is just my pace,” she says.

verything LaBelle does, from choosing dynamic songs from the catalog of “the queen” Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, and Frank Sinatra for Bel Hommage to deciding what chain will sell her sweet potato pie, banana pudding, and peach cobbler, is carefully considered and must be filled with “class and thought,” she says. “I was never one to just take whatever came my way. My thinking was always as long as something is quality and made sense [for me], then I’d say yes.”

“If you care about your reputation, how you view yourself and how the world views you, then you have to do things with a sense of pride and decide what can last and be great.” Maybe that’s where LaBelle’s shyness and reticence paid off; she doesn’t rush to judgment or action. “I know you’re gonna bring up that we’ve been talking about this new album of mine for 15 years now,” she says with a laugh, recalling several conversations we’ve had about the newly titled Bel Hommage. “Things have to simmer.”

LaBelle is the first to admit, however, that shyness didn’t always work to her advantage. Like when she auditioned for Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple and gave what she and the director agreed was a performance that “needed more energy, but he wanted me to try again.” LaBelle never went back for a second audition. “Maybe I didn’t want my first film to feature me in a love scene because I was so shy,” she says. When it came time to audition for 1990’s Ghost, LaBelle’s limo got stuck in Lincoln Tunnel traffic and Whoopi Goldberg tried out before her and got the part.

She was a bit deflated, but pleased for her friend. “Whoopi of course won the Oscar, and God bless her for that.”

LaBelle’s film star has risen, but it’s only been over the last few years thanks to memorable appearances in Empire, 2014’s American Horror Story (“I died so hard in that one, I ain’t never coming back,” she laughs, considering that series’ countless star turns), and, of course, as herself through a now-three-seasons-and-counting run with the Cooking Channel.

Ask if there is synergy regarding what she’ll cook on her television show, what she’s designated as her next Good Life sweets project for Walmart (“lots of cobblers coming up”), and what she’s writing about for her latest cookbook, and the singer says that she believes things happen organically. “I like working with Walmart because they’re smart and they, like me, wish to keep things affordable so everyone can enjoy them, no exclusions. That’s the same reason that, in Desserts LaBelle, I made sure to include recipes for those who can’t eat sugar, because I’ve been diabetic for more than 20 years. You want sugar now and then—so do I—so I want you [to] have what you want.”

That same synergy is what finally made Bel Hommage a reality. She says she started the project at a time when she wasn’t completely happy with her voice. The emotions of feeling her way through that initial struggle coupled with finding footing in a genre she loved but hadn’t devoted herself to in the past (“my ex-husband wanted me to do this for a while... he knew me and my voice”) bubble to the top of every high note in Bel Hommage, from Nina Simone’s “Go to Hell” to Shirley Horn’s “Here’s to Life,” a vibrant cut that LaBelle states will close her upcoming shows. The album has been a true labor of love, but LaBelle wouldn’t have it any other way. “All good things in good time, baby.”

Day in the life: “The Chamber focuses on demographics and entrepreneurship for Latinos. This is the fastest-growing group in the nation, and we are two times more likely to start a business than the national average. There are 8,000 Latino-owned businesses in Philly and 18,000 in the region. That’s powerful.”

Overcoming challenges: “What I find is that Latinos are in many ways still a mystery, and largely unknown or misunderstood. My goal is to help debunk assumptions and misconceptions about our diverse community, because it is indeed very diverse.”

The six professionals featured in our annual Women of Influence edition have paved their own paths to power with a shared mission in mind: Give back on the road to the top. Philadelphia stories: “My most memorable interview was with Gaven Toney, a seventh grader from Chester County. He was born without arms or legs and idolized the Eagles. Despite his obstacles, he was still able to play on his school’s football team. We were able to get him VIP tickets to an Eagles game, and I was on the sidelines with the 12-year-old when he met his favorite players. The story ended up winning an Emmy, but the real joy was seeing his reaction on the field.”

Hidden talents: “I play the piano.”

Championing immigration: “I’m a refugee of the Persian Gulf War. I arrived in the US when I was 8 years old after being plucked out of a bomb shelter in Kuwait by two US ambassadors. I was lucky because I made it out of that situation and was able to live the American dream.

Often I contemplate the birth lottery concept and how we don’t choose our starting point. That’s why I’m a social entrepreneur.”

On founding ROAR: “After I became a US citizen, I went on a six-month solo trek across South America in the summer of 2013.

While there, I encountered many women who had been victims of assault, harassment, or abuse. One week later in Philly, a woman was brutally raped while feeding her parking meter. That’s when ROAR for Good, and eventually Athena, was born. Athena helps women stay connected to their loved ones and get help when they’re in trouble. For each purchase, we take 10 percent and invest in youth-education nonprofits.”

What’s next: “Uplifting refugee and immigrant communities is my thing right now. I just finished keynoting at the Idaho Refugee Conference. I may do another TED Talk on this topic.”

First job: “During high school, I worked at C’est La Vie bakery in New Hope.”

Greatest accomplishment: “Opening a bar in 30 days. It was wild! But seeing BOK evolve every day, with each new tenant, into its own small-business community feels like a growing accomplishment.”

Morning routine: “I listen to podcasts while I get dressed, with my rescue pup, Elwin, lounging nearby. I live within a few blocks of BOK, so it’s either a short walk or bike ride into the office. I love walking; it is my meditation.”

Guilty pleasure: “Karaoke. Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar is my favorite on Fridays.”

Women in the workplace: “We have a lot of female employees.

Everyone talks about real estate as being about construction or financing, but it’s really about people. Are you creating an environment that people want to live, work, or play in? I think having women’s intuition helps.”

The millennial movement: “We are making things happen because we are curious, courageous, and probably a bit naïve. Being young and a bit fearless can also help make new things happen.”

What’s next: “BOK Bar will reopen around Memorial Day. We held a furniture design competition this year, so there will be some really wild, interesting new additions. We are also starting to book weddings.”

These girls are often overlooked and frowned upon by society. They are suspended from school at disproportionate rates and become more susceptible to falling behind.”

Role models: “My late parents and brother remain my inspiration.

They instilled in me the belief that I don’t have to be like everybody else—to be myself—which has served as my foundation. This helped launch my career in fashion as a journalist and image consultant and instilled in me values that charted my life and defined success for me.

They also underscored my responsibility to help others.”

From Pennsylvania to Pennsylvania Avenue: “I was one of 10 women in the nation selected as a Champion of Change and invited to speak at the White House.

It was a magical moment. It also allowed me to shine a global spotlight on the obstacles girls of color face in school and why our work is more vital than ever.”

Advice to young women: “If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can’t hear them anymore.”

What’s next: “Workshops on STEM and the scholarship process.

My book The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect will be re-released.”

Are you one of the 45 million Americans who suffer from chronic headaches? Did you know women are affected three times more often than men? It’s been said that our mouth serves as a window into what is going on inside our body: Oral health can reflect serious health conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, and diabetes, but it can also aid in the diagnosis for headaches.

YOUR ESSENTIAL PHILADELPHIA WELLNESS GUIDE “Mommy makeovers,” a combination of breast and abdominal rejuvenation, are a rising trend in cosmetic surgery procedures among women.

STATE OF MIND

“MOST PEOPLE, INCLUDING MANY MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, DO NOT THINK OF HEADACHES AS HAVING A DENTAL CAUSE.”—dr. lindsey marshall Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Fellow of The Las Vegas Institute. “When your bite is not balanced with the muscles of the head and neck, it can result in headaches, neck pain, ringing in the ears, or facial pain, a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).”

TMD affects 15 percent of the American population—with women being twice as likely as men to be affected. This misalignment of the jaw can result from breakdown of your teeth (from clenching and grinding or reflux) or from missing teeth or even poorly aligned teeth.

Neuromuscular dentists specialize in diagnosing and treating this condition. “We see a lot of patients

come in with chronic headaches, sometimes for decades. They have consulted with ENTs, neurologists, and pain specialists and have taken medications for years without relief,” Dr. Marshall explains.

The first step of treating TMD is noninvasive. “Through the use of a TENS unit to relax the muscles and a computer for EMG readings of the muscles of the head and neck, we can find the most ideal position and create a customized appliance to hold the jaw in this relaxed position,” Dr. Marshall says. If the appliance is effective in relieving symptoms, the next step is to fix the underlying problem, which may mean adjusting the position of the teeth with orthodontics or

restorative care. “Most people, including medical professionals, do not think of headaches as having a dental cause,” Dr. Marshall says.

The Generation Xers are now ages 40 to 64. They have a need to be everything for everybody: taking care of themselves, their children, and oftentimes their parents. The standard that they are setting for themselves is unsustainable many times.

And if social media, cellphones, and false social constructs are determining what is valuable, it is very easy to see how you can be quickly overwhelmed and feel less than.”

And the use of injectable fillers, a minimally invasive option to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, has skyrocketed.

“When a patient comes in for a consultation, we tie in their anatomy and budget to determine what will maximally improve them aesthetically,” says Dr. Percec. “Our research teams have spent many years applying innovative 3-D imaging to study facial dynamics and motion, which we apply to our patients. The goal is to have a

face that moves normally—to avoid the overdone look or a face that doesn’t move.”

The number of “mommy makeovers,” which describes a combination of breast and abdominal rejuvenation, has also increased recently. Dr. Percec says, “Women often come to us unhappy with the way their breasts changed, that they cannot lose weight, or their clothes aren’t fitting properly. Every case is different. With respect to the breast, we may utilize an implant in addition to a breast lift to restore volume and give a full look and in some cases make them even better.

And in regards to the tummy, there are multiple variations—liposuction, tightening of deeper layers that have

separated.” Stomach muscles can separate during pregnancy or from a Cesarean section, so when a woman eats, she may not feel as full and, as a result, eat more.

patients who are mildly or moderately obese who have been unsuccessful at shedding their undesired weight with diet and exercise, but they are not quite ready to go under the knife. Our office is the second in the nation to offer patients the Obalon Balloon System, a newly FDAapproved, non-surgical device that can help them achieve their goal weight,” says Louis Bucky, MD, chief of Plastic Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital.

“The balloons serve to occupy space in the stomach. By creating a feeling of fullness, or what we call satiety, patients eat less and consume fewer calories.”

Balloon insertion is done in an outpatient setting, typically takes less than 10 minutes, and does not require anesthesia, sedation, or downtime. Dr. Bucky explains that it “is contained within a capsule that is swallowed and then remotely inflated with gas

via a micro-catheter, which is then removed. This process is repeated twice within the following three months, leaving three lightweight balloons in the stomach.”

In clinical trials, when the Obalon Balloon System was used alongside a diet and exercise program, patients lost twice as much weight compared to diet and exercise alone. “Our office also provides nutritional counseling because the success of long-term weight loss depends on the patient’s ability to modify their eating habits,” Dr. Bucky underscores. “The good news is that when they do, research shows that, on average, 89 percent of the pounds that were shed stayed off six months after the balloons are removed.” Removal of all three balloons is performed after six months in an outpatient setting with an endoscopic procedure under anesthesia.

Cardiovascular disease is the number-one killer of American women—causing one in three deaths each year. Despite these staggering statistics, many still consider it a man’s disease.

The more a woman knows about heart disease, the better chance she has of beating it.

“Many risk factors are similar to men’s—like blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight—while others are unique to women, like endometriosis and a history of a complicated pregnancy,” says Dr. Marjorie Stanek, cardiologist at Einstein Healthcare Network and this year’s 2017 Go Red for Women Woman of Heart.

Go Red for Women was developed in 2004 by the American Heart Association as a national movement to raise awareness about heart disease and risk factors in women.

She adds, “Estrogen provides a protective effect on our hearts and, as a result, women generally have a 10-year delay when it comes to developing cardiovascular disease.

Once menopause sets in, that shield goes away.”

While some risk factors are outside your control— like race, age, and gender— there are many that you do

have the power to control, such as diet, tobacco and alcohol use, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Dr. Sandra Abramson, director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Center at Lankenau Medical Center, and 2017’s Go Red for Women Champion, emphasizes, “Even with risk factors and a strong family history of heart disease, you’re not destined for heart disease.

If it’s proactively managed and treated, you can significantly decrease your risk and level the playing field, but that requires committing to an overall healthy lifestyle.”

Being physically active is a very powerful tool to decrease your risk. Says Dr. Abramson, “The goal should be 150 minutes a week. If you are inactive, start slowly—even if it means taking a walk around the block once a day.”

And when it comes to smoking, just don’t do it.

If you do smoke, look for resources in your community to help you quit.

“There is no healthy amount of smoking,” Dr. Abramson explains. “We have one body, and our entire lives, to treat it well.”

Located in the heart of Old City, their collection of just six suites was designed to feel more like apartments for a true home-away-from-home experience. That was when the Ludemans came up with the idea of “invisible service.”

“Invisible service is an approach to hospitality that tries to reduce the barrier between a visitor and the real experience of a place,” says Chad. “The idea is to still provide all of those things guests want from a hotel without them feeling like they are leaving the neighborhood.”

They abandoned the usual hotel front desk in favor of curated guidebooks.

Speckled with all of the best hot spots in Philly for dining, shopping, and wandering, these city directories help guests navigate the 215 like locals. “It offers the kind of in-room recommendations you might get from a friend,” says Courtney.

Lokal is currently accepting reservations for short-term and extended stays.

“There is design inspiration around me every day, everywhere I go,” says Karen Daroff. And it’s that open-minded approach to interior design that has made her firm, Daroff Design, successful for more than 40 years. While her work has taken her to 34 states, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and China, Daroff is a Philadelphian at heart.

“I’m very proud to have been educated, live, and work here in Center City,” she says.

All those passport stamps have played a role in her design projects. “I photograph everything, because I am constantly inspired,” she says,

describing textured tiles she found in Spain, for example, and the architecture in Africa.

Much of Daroff’s day-to-day centers on large-scale commercial projects like hotels, resorts, multifamily housing, and workspaces. “Our work is guided by ever-evolving technology and factors like the environment and sustainability,” she says.

Her longtime clients include Comcast and Disney, with three notable projects in the pipeline: a new restaurant at the Philadelphia Zoo, transforming the Family Court building into a new hotel, and a refresh at Moore College of Art

and Design, Daroff’s alma mater.

It’s no surprise that her home mirrors the clean lines and sleek functionality that has grown to be a hallmark of her work. The classic pavilion design concept, inspired by 1930s architect Guiseppe Terragni, features B&B Italia furniture and neutral tones with pops of color.

Skylights and large windows create open areas for guests to congregate.

The cinematic good looks of the latest Newtown Square mansion to hit the market are undeniable.

The house inspires images of leisure time well spent, of cocktail parties on the flagstone terrace with guests sipping G&Ts and admiring the sweeping views across the 12-plus acres of manicured grounds. Or maybe shooting pool with old friends in the wood-paneled library; or a carefree summer pool party for the kids.

Discreetly located just a few minutes off the Main Line’s main roads, the handsome stone mansion—for sale at $5.3 million— resembles an English manor house of a bygone age. Ann Capron of McIntyre Capron & Associates, a residential architecture firm with locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, spent two years designing the meticulously crafted home, which took 14 months to complete. Now 17 years old, the home’s grand details rival those of much older suburban estates.

A project that took more than a year to build, the stately six-bedroom, eightbathroom mansion boasts a game room, gourmet kitchen, and library.

A custom-designed heavy oak wood front door opens onto a foyer where one quickly appreciates the sensible flow of rooms. No detail or design choice has gone unconsidered, right down to the platformed porcelain dog tub in the mud room with a thoughtful pair of steps for pups to descend. The in-ground pool was purposely sunk several feet below the level of the house so that the pool--especially out of season during cooler months--would remain out of view from rear-facing windowss.

Hardwood floors run throughout the gorgeously light-filled home, as well as stunning millwork and moldings. “I took castings of all of the molding from the Hare family estate [which he’d previously owned] and duplicated them here exactly,” says Tom Bentley, who owns the mansion and is a home builder himself. The dining room, living room, family room, and kitchen are all graciously sized. The wide hallways give the upstairs and downstairs an appealing grandeur.

Its many rooms and features are arranged for maximum harmony and logic, including butler’s pantries near the dining room and kitchen complete with a massive butcher block island.

There is ample storage and closet space for the six bedrooms; two full-size dressing rooms complement the master bedroom; an in-law suite is furthest from the heart of the house; a woodpaneled study is next to a clubby-looking billiards room and wet bar; and a playroom (with a wall-to-wall Beauty & the Beast-themed mural) is smartly stationed at the top of the house on its third floor.

“I used to entertain like crazy,” remembers Bentley, who drew up the floor plans with fun in mind. “The house fits 250 people no problem. I designed the flat area by the terrace to fit a Century Tent perfectly. I have electrical lines along the side, so we could set up a band, right into the tent.”

With a mixture of nostalgia and practicality, he adds: “But, I don’t live that way anymore. It’s for somebody who is entertaining and has a family and younger kids. I have memories of my kids sledding in the backyard, having their friends over… but they’re older now. We’re in a different phase of life.”

But, the builder can’t resist creating again. “I’m itching to build a new house. The Friends of Rittenhouse Square will transform Rittenhouse Square into a breathtaking tented ballroom. Funds raised at the gala support improvement and beautification projects for Rittenhouse Square Park.

Fairmount Park Conservancy’s 10th Annual Centennial Celebration is Thursday, May 4 at Horticulture Center. Celebration honoring park supporters for generosity and dedication to Philadelphia’s parks. Awards will be presented to Wells Fargo; C.R. ”Chuck” Pennoni; and Philadelphia Eagles and Connor Barwin. The reception and silent auction are at 6 pm followed by dinner and program.

This year the theme is “Jewels of Devon.” Join Carson Kressley and several other celebrity judges at this Devon tradition.
