“My logic with social media is to view it from the fan’s point of view and what they want to see, like behind the scenes of my design process and just my ordinary life in Philly. They want to see that I’m a real person. Social media has been a nice segue from Project Runway because I can still have a connection with them. I

don’t really curate my posts or follow a schedule; I just post things that are inspiring and interesting to me. The posts that get the most likes are the ones of my creative process, like how to make a textile. In 2016 I’m moving away from collections and creating pieces. Then I’m not married to a collection

for six months. It gives me so much more freedom.

I’m also working on a couple pieces that incorporate paintings onto garments. And I have a really big project for this year that I’m so excited about, Project Runway All Stars, which airs in February. It’s nice to be back where I started.”

Philadelphia Style’s Spring Fashion issue is packed with star power: Naomi Watts graces the cover, Zac Posen dazzles in our Style section, and G. Love goes behind the music for our revamped back page, “Moment of Truth.” It’s a fitting way to kick off our first edition of 2016, which also boasts a new look that’s filled with even more Philly events, fashion, and food. And let’s not forget plenty of local personalities, like CBS 3’s Meisha Johnson and fashion designer and Project Runway winner Dom Streater. Georges Perrier also captures major screen time with King Georges, a new documentary that chronicles his final days at Le Bec-Fin. It’s a must see for Philadelphians of any age, but especially those that dined here. I was lucky enough to attend a few events and

dinners at Le Bec-Fin over the years but like most people— including the film’s director Erika Frankel—it was that first visit that feels the most magical. I still remember the dessert cart being wheeled over, as my Nan and I both wondered aloud how we could even think about dessert after our indulgent lunch. I spoke to Perrier about King Georges and enjoyed a candid 30-minute conversation with the famed chef. His 20-hour work days have since been replaced with golf, walking his dog, and hosting private dinners. “My life is good,” he said. “I have no regrets.” Now that’s a lesson worth sharing.

Stylist Jeanann Williams worked 10 years in fashion PR for clients such as Alexander Wang, Bottega Veneta, and Victoria’s Secret. Williams became the primary fashion stylist for our cover star, Naomi Watts, during the press tour for her film The Impossible.

In 2015, she was named #9 on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of Hollywood’s most powerful stylists.

Rachel Smith, the photographer behind our portrait shot of Dr. Alexander Vaccaro of the Rothman Institute, has been professionally shooting people, events, and stories since 2005.

Her clients include AARP, Thompson Creek Windows, and SmartCEO. She also documents weddings and family stories.

What trend are you most looking forward to this spring? I love the femme details that are trending for spring, and all the dreamy tiers of ruffles. I love color, and spring will bring all the beautiful candy colors of the rainbow, perfect to brighten up any wardrobe.

Tip for this season’s trends: Embellishment is everywhere: a beaded neckline, a jewel-toed pump, a flower appliqué on spaghetti straps. If you can’t buy the entire piece, play with embellished pins and brooches. Add them to a coat, cardigan, sweatshirt, or handbag. Playing dress up is not just for kids.

Tell us about your shoot with Dr. Vaccaro. Going into the shoot we knew our time would be limited because of his schedule.

We ended up only having 20 minutes because he was called to emergency surgery. Still I’m excited about the amount of content we created in such a short time. He has a very calm, kind demeanor and I think his talent of working under pressure helped us move through the shoot with great ease. I left feeling very humble, thinking about how incredible it is to create images of remarkable people who use their talents to save lives.

What was the fashion feature shoot like? We had a mix of talents and actors, especially in age, and we wanted different trends from rock and roll to floral. You don’t have to be a twenty-to-thirty something; anyone can make these trends work.

What’s your must-have accessory for spring?

The statement cuff or statement necklace. I love the shine, the embellishment, and the mixed texture.

What’s your proudest achievement? My rock star 13-year-old son Julien, who’s going to be on the Warped Tour with his band The Local Rebellion.

You spoke to suburban boutiques about spring trends. What are some of your favorite looks? I’m a big fan of the new ways designers are reconstructing the classic white shirt.

I like pairing an oxford with skinny jeans and a statement heel for night or metallic gold Chucks for day.

Tell us about your interview with scientist Frederic Bertley. I was intrigued to learn about the caliber of winners who have come to the Franklin Institute to receive the Franklin Medal. Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jane Goodall, and Bill Gates have stood in the same halls that my kids have run screaming through.

Chef Susanna Foo was a large part of Philly’s first restaurant renaissance in the ’80s, when she turned Chinese-French cuisine into white-linen dining. She closed her eponymous restaurant in 2009 after 22 years, and moved her culinary enterprise to Radnor to be closer to her family. Now that family—in particular, son Gabe—is at the forefront of Foo’s next phase with Suga, a restaurant reliant on the tastes and décor of her childhood in Mongolia, sans the French influences. “We’re returning to her roots, but with her personal interpretation,” says Gabe, who handles front-of-the-house operations and cocktail concepts.

Natural wood accents counter hues of red, teal, grey, and gold reminiscent of the Chinese night markets of Foo’s youth at the 80-seat Suga. “We’re going for a chic, modern Asian vibe,” says Gabe, a feel that will be reflected in new menu items such as the spicy Ma Po Tofu with beech mushrooms and Szechuan peppercorn as well as her signature fluffy steamed dumplings—a longtime Philly favorite.

On the job: My first day at CBS was electric; getting a smooch from the Phillie Phanatic wasn’t bad either.

Early bird: During the week, my alarm goes off at 1:30 am, so I have to be disciplined: I’m in bed by 6 pm, Monday through Friday.

Philly faves: Coming from the Midwest, I really appreciate the city’s architecture and history. One of my latest discoveries is the Reading Terminal Market. I also find the people here incredibly gracious. They’ve become an extension of my inner circle and I totally understand why it’s called The City of Brotherly Love.

Off the cuff: Most people know by now I speak Swedish and love boxing. If I weren’t in TV, I would be a zoologist. I love reptiles; one day I’d like to own an animal-sanctuary.

Social media moves: When I lived in Sweden, I developed a love for great coffee. That’s what inspired the hashtag #coffeedate to interact with viewers.

The Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts returns this April and with more than 60 shows scheduled from international and local performers, there’s no time like the present to start planning. Kimmel Center CEO Anne Ewers says to begin with Article 13 on April 8, a largescale production at Penn Treaty Park that uses fire and sand to tell the story of immigration and kicks off the fest’s 15-day run, and then join thousands of revelers at the Street Fair finale on April 23, PIFA’s marquee event on Broad Street. In between check out thought-provoking highlights such as Concerto in Sea Major, performed in select city fountains; Sneaker Suites, a mix of dance, poetry, and theater inspired by the role of sneakers in hip-hop culture; and the visually charged Holding It Down: The Veterans’ Dreams Project, centering on veterans of color from post-9/11 wars.

Even after more than 40 years Georges Perrier still enjoys cooking. Whether it’s behind the burners at a national culinary event or a private dinner for friends, he does it, in part, to stay sharp. “It keeps my hand in the pot,” Perrier says. “You sort of lose your touch if you don’t keep cooking.” Nowhere is Perrier’s deft culinary skill more deeply felt than in

the new documentary King Georges. Filmmaker and Philadelphia native Erika Frankel followed the chef during the final days of his famed French dining room Le Bec-Fin, once known as one of the best restaurants in the world and the gold standard of Philly dining for a generation.

Part scientist, part researcher, and part educator, Frederic Bertley, senior vice president of science and education at the Franklin Institute, is intent on sharing his love for science and inspiring legions of budding scientists, inventors, and world-changers to do the same. The Institute is renowned for events like its Speaker Series (check out the talk on whether the colonization of Mars is possible on March 22) but Bertley is also behind one of the Institute’s biggest events of the year: the Philadelphia Science Festival (April 22–30). “It’s a nine-day, 100-event science extravaganza that stimulates your five senses through the lens of all things scientific,” he says. Bertley, who has spoken at the United Nations and the White House, also spearheads the Franklin Institute Awards, one of the oldest science awards programs in the world. Nothing says springtime in Philadelphia quite like rows of delicate pink flowers and crowds of people itching to be outdoors for the city’s Cherry Blossom Festival. This year, according to assistant director of the Japan American Society Aaron Dilliplane, guests can expect the return of many popular events.

“There are two film screenings planned, a host of workshops and demos at Liberty Place, some fun sushi-oriented events, and Tamagawa Taiko is coming back, as is the J-MUSIC Ensemble.” Above all, Dilliplane says, his favorite part of the festival is the Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance group.

“They bring so much energy and excitement,” he says. “It’s a jaw-dropping performance every year.”

DOCTOR’S ORDERS

For Dr. Alexander Vaccaro, a demanding work schedule that often includes 15-hour days or more doesn’t feel much like work at all. “Even when I’m out late for business dinners I’m having fun,” he says. “I really enjoy my jobs.”

Those jobs include spine surgeon; president of the Rothman Institute, a private orthopedic practice with 20 area locations; and editor-inchief of a major spine journal —three roles that Vaccaro seamlessly juggles on any given day: He’s awake before 5 AM to answer emails while riding his stationary bike and is in the operating room until 3 PM for at least a dozen major spine surgeries each week. He travels the world for conferences, including a recent trip to Singapore, but says that his role as president “really requires you to be here.”

Vaccaro was in Philly more than ever in 2015 for

Vaccaro says that Rothman Institute analyzes everything from social media posts to email questionnaires to gather information and feedback from patients. “The vast majority of patients tell us what they want.”

Rothman, along with Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, made news for being among the first in the US to partner with four major sports teams in the same city. This winter also marked the second season of the uber-successful Rothman Institute Ice Rink at Dilworth Park.

With those programs in place, the practice is set on expanding both geographically and intellectually: Rothman will move into North Jersey

and different areas of Pennsylvania while bringing modern technology to patient care. “We’re moving into telemedicine, where one of our doctors can be with you any time of day for a face-to-face conversation via a TV or tablet. You won’t have to get in your car and go anywhere,” says Vaccaro.

And in another Philly first, Rothman is laying the groundwork for a spine hospital (also in conjunction with Jefferson), joining just a handful of similar facilities in the US. Vaccaro

says spinal care, for lower back injuries particularly, is a need in the community that just wasn’t being satisfied.

Vaccaro refers to patients often and in a variety of contexts during conversation and it’s clear that he believes it is patient input that is driving the very future of Rothman Institute. “You have to respond to how health care is changing but it’s really about listening to people and finding out exactly what they need,” he says. rothmaninstitute.com

Known for his impressive squad of superfans, from actresses Christina Hendricks and Amy Schumer to models Naomi Campbell and Coco Rocha, Zac Posen has had a hit on every red carpet. Made with exquisite corsetry, couture techniques, and fin de siècle extras, the famous gowns of his eponymous line (which he launched to immense acclaim at the august age of 21) have come to represent the very essence of formal-

meets-fab glamour.

And so some industry insiders were surprised when, last year, Posen was named creative director of Brooks Brothers, the 200-year-old all-American brand specializing in men’s suiting and preppy-casual womenswear.

“Taking sportswear further while respecting the original codes of the house was a challenge, but I love the challenge,” says Posen of designing for Brooks Brothers.

That breath of style starts with the color palette. In his debut spring collection, the 35-year-old designer draws on punchy corals, mint greens, and sunny yellows (in tropical and nautical-stripe prints) inspired by Nantucket, the Hamptons, and Miami. “To me, there is a 1970s bohemian quality to those yellow, red, and blue tartans next to very floral prints,” he says. It continues with the

silhouettes, which are emblematic of easy dressing. “I think where our Zac Posen collection is more to-the-body, with Brooks Brothers, there’s a celebration of straightforward construction.”

Americana sportswear may not be in the vernacular of his own fashion house, but Posen hasn’t abandoned his own DNA. “I wanted to bring a sense of casualness and pop to [the collection], which helped highlight the shapes and the cuts,” he says. “It’s creating a collection that has pop, but is still sophisticated.”

Amy Voloshin’s favorite part of her former design job at Urban Outfitters was working with print studios—so she went to the other side and started her own in 2006 with her husband, Leo. It’s a business she created, in part, to open up more opportunities for design school grads in the city.

“We employ 14 full-time designers who all work in-house and collaborate,” says Voloshin.

“There are so many schools we can hire from here.” At its super-hip, former factory offices in Kensington, Printfresh creates patterns for major clients like H&M, Zara, J. Crew, Coach, Diane von Furstenberg, and Michael Kors. Its main competition in the marketplace? Big European print studios.

Big City Blues Who kneW that blue Would once again make it onto eyelids for spring? here’s hoW to rock this runWay trend on the streets.

Spring is coming: Cue the pop of color. This season, it’s nothing short of electric—blue, that is. Amidst the hubbub of September shows, the hue (and all its variants) reigned supreme, from pastel eye masks at Chanel to smoky shadows at DVF. Marc Jacobs kept it “downtown” in a look created by NARS, with models sporting spots of deep turquoise on the eye’s inner corners. “It’s sophisticated, but she’s living her life, so it’s very real at the same time,” explains Founder and Creative Director François Nars. To recreate, use the label’s Dark Angel Velvet Shadow Stick ($29) all over the eyelid, Solomon Islands Eye Paint ($25) smudged on the inner corners, then Cressida Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow ($29). t is one of those frigid New York City mornings when you can practically breathe icicles and the only sane place to be is by the fire with a mug of hot cocoa. Naomi Watts is undaunted. She and her two young boys—Sasha, 7, and Kai, 6, the little blondies from her 11-year relationship with actor Liev Schreiber—are braving the elements like an intrepid band of Arctic explorers: Parkas with fur collars, wool beanies down around the eyebrows, scarves over turtlenecks over base layers. The trials urbanites must endure for an outing to Whole Foods!

Watts looks relaxed and happy even as a paparazzi photographer trails them back to their Tribeca apartment. The actress has not had much time lately for routine errands.

Between this year and last, her name has appeared on eight different movies, including some of the most acclaimed projects of her career. Birdman, While We’re Young, and St. Vincent were fêted by critics and honored on the awards circuit, and Watts is now a full-fledged sci-fi icon as well.

As the abused wife turned rebellion leader in the popular Divergent series, Watts returns for a second time as the butt-kicking antagonist, Evelyn Eaton, in Allegiant (scheduled for release on March 18). The actress joined the massively popular franchise, based on the YA novels by Veronica Roth, after killing off Kate Winslet’s character in last spring’s Insurgent.

“We needed someone who could play brittle and damaged on the outside and yet carry immense power under the surface, and Naomi delivers that magical mix and makes it look effortless,” says Doug Wick, the series co-producer. “She’s also someone who’s just, you know, great to hang out and gossip with.”

The part is a departure for Watts, who at this stage in her career had not quite pictured herself heading a rat-a-tat army in a dystopian walled-in version of Chicago. “It’s something of a stretch but in terms of character, Evelyn is someone I can appreciate,” Watts says. “She is a survivor and she’s made the most of her experience despite a bunch of twists and setbacks.”

At 47, Watts gets major points herself for endurance. She struggled for years to find steady footing in Hollywood after a childhood that she describes as “less than consistent.”

Born in seaside Shoreham, England, and reared there and in Wales, Watts was 4 when her mom, an antiques dealer and designer, split from her dad, a road manager and sound engineer for Pink Floyd. Peter Watts, whose

voice and manic laughter can be heard in the background on the album Dark Side of the Moon, died of an apparent heroin overdose when Naomi was just 7. “I wish I could say otherwise but I don’t have any clear memories of my father,” Watts says.

(The rock gene lives on nevertheless. Watts recently posted a shot of herself backstage with David Bowie to mark the singer’s passing in January.)

Watts and her older brother, Ben, a photographer who lives near her in Manhattan, relocated to Australia with their mother and stepdad when Naomi was 14. “Mum was young and did not have much of a plan,” Watts says. “I think there’s a combination of grit and perseverance and tricking yourself into believing things are okay even if you’re not getting the results you want— that’s what I learned from her. Even if you’re being batted around, you keep going. It’s basic human determination.”

Watts caught the acting bug after seeing the movie Fame at a young age, and took drama classes in Australia before heading off to Japan for a modeling stint in her late teens. Success was spotty at first. She landed a part in an Australian romance, For Love Alone, in 1986, but the roles that followed were of the type that now makes for amusing late-night YouTube viewing. When she was around 18, Watts, wearing ’80s hair bows and shoulder pads, shot a Tampax commercial for Australian TV. But even that was a bridge to somewhere. “I was fresh out of school and wasn’t thinking, This is so humiliating,” she says. “I was thinking, Fantastic! A paycheck. Now I can buy a Mini Cooper and drive myself to auditions rather than taking three buses and a train.”

In one of her acting classes, Watts met another rising talent who would soon burst onto the global stage and help open doors for her. Nicole Kidman was a friend and early mentor and the name above the marquee in Flirting, the 1991 boardingschool romance that was Watts’s first real break in Hollywood. “Nic was incredibly generous in introducing me to people and showing me that an Aussie girl from around the corner can make it big,” Watts says.

But as Kidman continued to soar with blockbusters like Far and Away and Batman Forever, Watts, who was now living full-time in LA, scraped the barrel with gigs like the TV movie Bermuda Triangle and the straight-to-video train wreck Children of the Corn IV. She recalls that period as a time spent “driving 45 minutes deep into the San Fernando Valley to wait as six actors auditioned before me, only to have to sit in two more hours of traffic on the 405 freeway coming home.” None of it made Watts give up. “I would play mental games with myself,” she says. “Rather than dwell on why I didn’t have this role or that opportunity, I would

say, ‘Well, I do have a SAG card and I do have an agent and I am perfectly fine until the right something comes along.’”

That something would be Mulholland Drive.

Even after more than a decade in the business, Watts was an unknown in David Lynch’s 2001 noir mystery. She plays a wide-eyed Midwestern starlet new to LA who puts aside her dreams of fame to help an amnesiac woman figure out her true identity. Major surrealism ensues. There are torrid lesbian scenes, a frightening cowboy, and a miniature elderly couple that comes crawling out of a mysterious box. Moviegoers went “Huh?” but the film became an instant cult classic. Agents started chasing Watts down with scripts. Big directors wanted to meet her. Children of the Corn V would have to wait.

Watts received her first Academy Award nomination two years later as a recovering drug addict struggling to live a normal suburban existence in 21 Grams. She followed that with standout performances in the offbeat comedy I Heart Huckabees and opposite Sean Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Watts played muse to Hollywood’s most famous gorilla in Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake and earned another Oscar nod for 2012’s The Impossible, based on a true story about a mother swept up by the 2004 tsunami that struck Thailand. Horror fans loved her in the sleeper hit The Ring and its sequel.

“Even if you feel completely connected to the material it often doesn’t go the way you think it will,” Watts says. “It’s no different than anything else in life. You can’t calculate how things will turn out. All you can do is try to have fun, push yourself to do well, be with people you love being with, and stay in the moment. The rest is basically out of your hands.”

ack inside her warm apartment, Watts is enjoying a rare hiatus from early call times and long days on location. She was up early to meditate, then fixed breakfast for the kids, caught up on phone calls, and may sneak in a workout before turning to a couple scripts her agent wants her to consider. Watts is on the board of the New York Academy of Art and for a decade has been a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for a program helping to raise awareness of AIDS issues. Still, her schedule today is blissfully open.

“My biggest challenge,” she says, “might be figuring out whether to read the boys one of the Narnia books or Harry Potter.”

Watts and Schreiber try as much as possible not to be working at the same time so that one of them can focus on parenthood exclusively. They never married, but they have vowed to keep things as stable as possible for Sasha and Kai.

Watts recently purchased a large-scale painting by British artist Harland Miller. It is part of a series in which he reimagines covers of vintage Penguin books. This one is a made-up volume titled Love Stretch Me No Longer in This Rough World. Those words hit a chord the minute Watts saw the piece in the gallery, she says. Before she and Schreiber got together, Watts dated Heath Ledger for several years. Asked if coupling is harder when both people are well-known, Watts does not hesitate.

“Relationships are hard whether you’re famous or not,” she says. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have to work on it. Being an actor doesn’t change anything. I’m sure it’s the same if you’re a doctor or a couple of lawyers. You have high-pressure jobs, lots of hours, stresses that come at you unexpectedly—and you have to figure out how to be present in the midst of it all.”

Watts knows her kids are about to burst through the door and make the day all about mommy time, which is more than fine with her.

Her schedule is about to go bonkers again. Watts costars with Schreiber later this year in The Bleeder about the life of heavyweight fighter Chuck Wepner (the film shot in New York so both actors could be at home). In June, she appears opposite Oliver Platt in the psychological thriller Shut-In. She recently wrapped production on The Book of Henry, a crime drama about a precocious boy who falls for the daughter of the New York City Police Commissioner. Watts plays the boy’s single mom. She also has another Divergent installment ahead—Ascendant hits theaters in 2017.

Watts is reluctant to say this is the culmination of everything she struggled to achieve on those drives out to the Valley. “This isn’t the life I imagined,” she says. “In many ways, it’s far, far better, and yet I look at what’s possible—I mean, look at Frances McDormand or Helen Mirren or, come on, Meryl Streep—and I go, ‘Okay, there’s still a lot of room to grow and improve.’”

The trick is to do that and still appreciate what you have. When Watts was making King Kong in the early 2000s, she paid a visit to Fay Wray, the legendary star of the original 1933 film. Watts and Peter Jackson and a few others crammed into Wray’s tiny book-lined apartment on New York’s Upper West Side as Wray, who was in her 90s and near the end of her life, told story after story about a career that spanned 57 years.

“Something beautiful happened near the end,” Watts says, her voice growing soft. “She leaned over and whispered in my ear. The specific words are a blur now but the feeling was that she was passing the baton. It wasn’t from her to me specifically but more like her generation making room for a new one. ‘It’s your turn. It’s your moment.’ Since then, I always think, you have to be awake to that.”

Spring fashion is veering away from minimalism and heading into full sartorial bloom. In a season whose trends ranged from retro ’90s looks to ruffles galore, there are a few that continue to dominate the runways from New York to Paris and every street scene in between.

Here, some of the people behind the suburb’s most high-style shops give insight into spring’s biggest trends.

When the current owner of Albermarle first encountered the buildings that he would eventually convert into an elegantly appointed, 11,000-square-foot home, he needed a lot of imagination.

Formerly used as the stables and dairy farm for Ardrossan, the Villanova manse designed in 1912 by architect Horace Trumbauer, they were in shell condition.

Precious little remained to suggest that Hope Montgomery Scott, the woman who inspired the socialite played by Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story, had once spent a great deal of time here tending to her horses.

Still, with a separate entrance located on the southern end of the original property— which sprawls for 750

acres—Albermarle’s provenance certainly was a selling point.

What sealed the deal for the owner, though, is one of the parcel’s most distinctive outbuildings, its clock tower. “I just fell in love with it,” he says. “I knew right away it would make a great conversation piece.”

The space, minus its peeling drywall and dropped ceilings, now serves as his home office. Taking center stage: the meticulously restored workings of an antique Seth Thomas clock.

complete with concrete countertops, and the creation of five bedrooms, a soaring great room, and a paneled library. Two other outbuildings provide four additional guest bedrooms and are equipped with kitchens and living areas.

Throughout, the estate features an impeccable mix of original and new period details like inlaid floors, bespoke cabinetry, and crown moldings.

“This is a home for someone who values caring for and becoming a steward of a restored treasure,” says Lisa Weber Yakulis of Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Realty.

In addition to the gut job renovation, the designers carved out new garage spaces and, most noteworthy, a recreation barn that’s seamlessly matched to the stone exteriors of the original buildings. Marked by an antique door from Morocco, this rustic two-level space features distressed wood floors and exposed beams. A clever chandelier crafted from old wagon wheels watches over a jukebox and billiards table, while, upstairs, a completely fitted-out gym and powder room await. “I knew we had done it right,” the owner recalls with a laugh, “when someone

visiting the property said he remembered the barn from when he was a kid.”

The property’s 17 acres include lush gardens, designed by award-winning landscape architect Chuck Gale and adorned with statuary and fountains, plus amenities like a pool and tennis courts. In many ways, says the owner, it’s what’s outside the home that he’ll miss the most once the property sells.

It’s hard to believe that the Water Works was originally constructed as a municipal building for water in 1812. But even 200 years ago its scenic location and impressive architecture made it a popular attraction. This spring brings the Sofitel Philadelphia back to its European roots. “We’re revamping our menus and wedding packages to put the French back in our French hotel,” says Lisa DeLuca, social catering sales manager at Sofitel Philadelphia. With to-do lists full of invites, catering, guest lists, and flowers, most brides can agree that finding their dream dress is at the top. Whether it’s a beaded bodice or a classic ball gown that tugs at their hearts, this spring, Philadelphia brides are taking their looks up a notch.

“Spring is looking to be a bit more romantic,” says Pattie Lamantia, owner of The Wedding Shoppe (wedding-shoppe .com), a full-service bridal boutique on the Main Line. Taking a cue from the red carpet, brides are emulating stars like Olivia Wilde and Jaimie Alexander.

“Many brides are seeking out fuller gowns [and] the plunging V necklines are replacing a lot of the low open backs that we have been seeing,” she says.

To get these looks, Lamantia suggests designers Inbal Dror and Ines Di Santo as go-to labels.

If you’re looking to add a more subtle touch to your look, Abigail McGrath, general manager of The Wedding Pavilion at Van Cleve (vancleve collection.com), suggests incorporating florals or beading. “[Opt for] floral details in headpieces and sashes and even floral prints in bridal gowns,”

says McGrath, noting designers like Sara Gabriel and Haute Bride. “Several of our designers are also incorporating a lot of clear crystals and opals into their beading—this softens the look.”

At Nicole Miller Philadelphia (nicole millerphiladelphia.com), embellishments like jewels, lace, and netting add interest to Miller’s signature bridal aesthetic: modern, simple, and body skimming. “Many of Nicole’s bridal gowns are inspired by her collection—she translates that same look into her designs,” says Nicole Miller Philadelphia owner Mary K. Dougherty.

“She has definitely taken her design integrity and paired it with a bride’s desire to really shine at her wedding.”

Kathy Bado, owner of The Wedding Factor Boutique and Event Studio (theweddingfactor .com) advises wearing a plain dress and layering in trends through accessories.

“A simple, classic dress can have several different looks by adding or removing a detachable train or overskirt, a flowing cape, a dramatic bolero, or a stunning belt/sash, in addition to wearing the dress by itself.” Among the season’s latest trends, Bado names beading as the one to look out for. “That’s huge this year, so expect more sparkle.”

A wedding is no longer a night filled with traditional fare atop fine white china.

Instead, it’s cuisines full of personality and a variety of flavors that steal the show and with everything from seated formal dinners to late-night candy bars, Philadelphia brides and grooms are quick to add the newest food crazes to their menus.

The biggest trend this spring is leaving your guests with a taste of the party long after it’s over.

“Instead of favors, we love offering a breakfast bar as guests leave,” says Judy Moore, associate vice president of sales and marketing at Garces Restaurants (garcesgroup .com). “After a great night

of celebrating, waking up the next morning with a to-go bag of muffins or croissants can be a great detail.” Emily Hassinger, special events coordinator for Finley Catering (215-627-5100; finley catering.com) agrees that couples shouldn’t end the night after dessert. “The afterparty is a fun way to keep the night going,” says Hassinger. “[Try] adding in a late-night breakfast buffet, ice cream sundae bars with fresh waffles, or a snack like Philly pretzels.”

As for the main event, the most popular option is a seated dinner offering family-style courses.

“Family-style dining is the way to go,” says Moore. “It encourages communication

For fans of G. Love & the Special Sauce’s trashcan blues, the last three years have been fun. After a five-year hiatus that found Philadelphia singer/guitarist Garrett “G. Love” Dutton playing without Sauce drummer Jeffrey Clemens and bassist Jimi “Jazz”

Prescott, the trio reunited for 2014’s Sugar, 2015’s Love Saves the Day, and a 2016 tour that brings them to The Fillmore on March 26. “It’s like we were never apart,” says Dutton of his trio’s hip-hop blues.

G. Love’s career—and everything else in his

life—starts and ends with Philly. His own moment of truth was more ordinary than exceptional. “I was 16, a good kid who never cut school, save for this one day, when me and my girlfriend, Sara, were hanging on the hill behind the Society Hill Towers. We

were kissing. I had the bagged lunch my mom made me and my guitar, and I told her that ‘all this’ was all I needed.”

With that, Dutton eschewed college for the life of a street-performing troubadour. He met his Sauce bandmates and made

demos in 1992 after he saw a flyer for the Philly Music Conference outside of a Tower Records. “I sent in our demo and very quickly got a call from somebody at Studio 4 and Ruffhouse Records. In 1993, that was like winning the lottery.

Which I did.”
