FULL FRONTAL With a dash of whimsy (and an occasional giraffe), Instagrammer extraordinaire Elise Swopes captures the magic of Chicago’s snowy season.

FROZEN CITY SOCIAL MEDIA STAR ELISE SWOPES CAPTURES THE WONDER OF WINTER IN CHICAGO.

Anyone can snap a snowflake pic these days, but no one documents winter in the Windy City quite like iPhone artist Elise Swopes (@swopes). “When it starts getting cold, I’m like Yes, I can finally be myself,” the 26-year-old South Loop resident says. Thriving in the chill,

8 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Swopes loves walking through downtown mid-storm to immortalize the flurries. “There’s something so dramatic and cinematic [about] it,” the Gurnee native enthuses. A full-time freelance design artist, Swopes has garnered an Instagram following of more than 250,000 thanks

to her whimsically manipulated skylines and colors, but she considers the snow so filmic that she often sets aside her fantasyfilled editing techniques for a more stripped-down realism. Her favorite icy pic—captioned “first snowfall in Chicago” and featuring snow-laden

branches and slushy sidewalks in an eerily empty Millennium Park—has 11,300 likes and counting; the view from the top of the Adams and Wabash L stop is another must-snap frosted spot. But for this photo phenom, most remarkable are the moments when “the snow

is falling, no people around, and just these giant skyscrapers,” with the city seemingly at rest. “[There’s this awesome kind of surrealistic emptiness,” says Swopes. “That’s what makes winter memorable.” Go to michigan avemag.com to read Elise Swopes’s insider’s guide to Chicago.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I admit it: I have an Instagram problem. What started out as a casual pastime—posting the occasional photo from my adventures out and about in Chicago and wherever else my travels take me—has recently progressed into a full-blown obsession: Fastidiously composing each shot; agonizing over filter choice (Clarendon or Juno?!?); researching optimal hashtag usage; and poring over the millions of photos being posted 24 hours a day by ’grammers around the world. I’m certainly not alone. From Instagram and Twitter to Snapchat and that old stalwart Facebook, social media has revolutionized the way we interact with the rest of the world, giving us a voice to share our opinions and our perspective with everyone on the planet. And those who have mastered the game—racking up tens of thousands or even millions of followers—are society’s new celebs, wielding serious influence and a powerful platform. To paraphrase the old slogan, when they post, people listen.

In this, our Winter issue, we shine the spotlight on these new Chicago celebrities, some of the biggest movers and shakers in the city’s social media scene. From foodie force Samantha Roby (@chicagofoodauthority) to Style Charade fashionista Jenn Lake (@jenniferlake) and architecture whiz Neal Kumar @nealkumar), these Windy City residents and Instagram stars give us the scoop on their inspirations, their favorite Chicago spots to shoot, and the secrets to their success. Equally post-worthy? Our coverage of the season’s gotta-bethere events, from the Joffrey Ballet’s breathlessly anticipated, brand-new Nutcracker to the MCA’s edgy take on Beauty and the Beast. You can bet I’ll be there, taking in the best of winter in the Windy City—and, of course, Instagramming away.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER

Having been a media executive for more than 30 years, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the evolution of the digital ecosystem and how it complements traditional media. Social media, in particular, has allowed Michigan Avenue to amplify our voice and mission statement, which we (and myself) frequently document with the hashtag #MAMoments. It’s much more than a catalog of our brand highlights—it’s a real-time archive showcasing the evolution of our role in the community and marketplace. So at year’s close, what are my favorite #MAMoments from 2016? Frankly, with so many to choose from, it’s hard to fit on one page. Our Spring issue, featuring A-lister Naomi Watts, showcased our sexy redesign and newly-introduced Scene, Style, and Space categories, resulting in still-unwavering buzz. Our Summer edition, highlighting Art of the City talent Nick Cave, once again underscored Michigan Avenue—and GreenGale Publishing—as a steward to the arts community, which we recognize as vital to the identity of our city. Thanks to the support of our partners, we toasted Late Spring

32  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

and Late Fall subjects Anna Chlumsky and Jim Gaffigan at the Vista Tower Sales Gallery and the revitalized Ocean Cut, respectively. And somewhere in between, we managed to throw the bash of the Summer at our fifth annual Ashore Thing party, presented by BMO Harris Bank, in July at Navy Pier. People often approach me with the assumption that our team is bigger, that there’s “no way” we do what we do at our size. But the surprise long wore off for me: With the dedication of the names that you see on our masthead, coupled with the backing of our valued supporters, I’ve internalized and championed “small-but-mighty” as our guiding refrain. Get your hashtags ready: There are even bigger and better #MAMoments on the horizon.

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. JOHN DUGAN

ELAINE GLUSAC

The former online editor at Time Out Chicago and founding editor of Pitchfork’s Nothing Major, John Dugan is a regular contributor to the culture blog of The Economist and design publications like Mohawk Maker Quarterly. Dugan also recently edited indie press Curbside Splendor’s book The Empty Bottle Chicago: 21+ Years of Music/Friendly/Dancing, featuring hundreds of interviews, essays and photographs of the Ukrainian Village rock club’s history. Behind the Story: “In the course of chatting with Justin [“Music Man,” page 70], we realized that we’re both crazy for the music of ’70s mods The Jam and Memphis cult pop legends Big Star.” On my playlist: “I’ve been getting into The Equals, Eddy Grant’s band from the ’60s; they jump from innocuous to political from single to single. [Also], within minutes of streaming Justin’s Greatest Hits on the way to school, my kids became instantly obsessed.”

Chicago-based freelancer Elaine Glusac writes about travel and food for The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Afar, and Departures, among others. Behind the Story: “I learned chefs are crazy creative when it comes to brunch [“Power Brunch,” page 60]. I couldn’t believe the whacked-out, soupedup dishes on offer. And it’s the fun kind of experimentation. Anyone can relate to red velvet French toast.” Fave brunch spot: “Longman & Eagle in Logan Square, because the menu is super-savory (try the sunny-side duck egg hash), and it feels like a continuation of Saturday night.” Winter in Chicago: “I’m the rare winter lover. I love the transformation of the landscape under snow. Everything’s softer and brighter, at least compared to a snowless winter. We flood an ice rink in our Chicago-small yard, and as a result my edging turns are improving.”

A Miami native, NYCbased photographer Rodolfo Martinez earned his bachelor’s degree in photojournalism from the University of Miami and received his master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communication. He’s worked with celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Debbie Harry, and Eddie Redmayne, and his work has appeared in Paper, OOB, and W magazines. Behind the story: “A hailstorm took us by surprise while trying to shoot [“Forces of Nature ,” page 124] on the chairlifts. I was one chair ahead of the models (who were dressed for photos—and not for a hail storm) when the clouds rolled in, we lost visibility, the wind picked up... Then hail about the size of ice cubes started hitting us across our heads. It wasn’t a great experience going through it, but it was certainly the most laughedabout in the end.”

Over the course of her career, Betsy F. Perry has worked with Michael Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch, Helen Gurley Brown, and Michael Milken. She started at Harper’s Bazaar, has had senior positions at Cosmopolitan and Premiere, and has been on both sides of the camera as a Fox producer, movie critic, and Star Magazine gossip columnist. She wrote this issue’s Style story on Escada’s 2017 resort collection (page 89). Behind the story: “When you sit home in your sweats writing, it’s great fun to think about all the pretty clothes you’re writing about. I especially loved the names of colors—Mimosa yellow and Melrose pink—that the designer came up with.” Winter must-have: “Gorgeous over-the-knee suede boots, but I also love party dresses!” Dream interview: “Michelle Obama–after she’s moved and settled into her new home.”

BEASTLY GOOD THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART GIVES BEAUTY AND THE BEAST AN EDGY NEW TWIST.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRONWEN SHARP

BY THOMAS CONNORS

Snow White had that wicked queen to contend with, and Cinderella couldn’t catch a break from those nasty stepsisters. But no fair maiden quite faced the quandary that beset the beauty who met the beast. And no telling of that tale—even Cocteau’s surrealist cinematic treatment—comes close to the healthily lusty rendition conceived by Detroit-born burlesque artist Julie Atlas Muz and her British husband, actor Mat Fraser, who was born with shortened arms. “Beauty and the Beast is a story of love, understanding and triumph,” notes Muz. “What we do in our version is weave our own love story into the narrative.” Performers for whom sexuality and disability are nothing to get worked up about, Muz and Fraser are equally dismissive of any attempt to define their work as either art or entertainment. “We just let the story of our love and the fairy-tale couple’s love intertwine, honestly, openly,” says Fraser. “And the rest—disability, feminism, social commentary— comes out at a deep level, and hopefully embeds itself into the souls of all who come to see it.” December 1–19 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 200 E. WE BREAK THE DAWN KICK OFF YOUR MORNING IN STYLE WITH DAYBREA ER, THE PRE-WORK DANCE PARTY WITH A HEALTHCONSCIOUS TWIST. BY CHUCK ANSBACHER

56  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Picture this: The beat is thumping, the dance floor is packed, you’re sweating, smiling, euphoric as the sun starts to rise. It’s morning, but you’re not at the tail end of an exhausting all-nighter—you’re kicking your day off with an epic, pre-work, thousandperson dance party. This is Daybreaker, the wellness-meets-

nightlife love child of entrepreneur best friends Radha Agrawal and Matthew Brimer, which is turning dance culture on its head in cities across the globe. Started in New York in 2013 and now in 15 cities and counting, Daybreaker is a completely sober experience meant to bring people together and get that blood

pumping. It starts with an hour of deep house yoga followed by a two-hour immersive, full-on rave. The format, however, is the only constant. “Our goal is to always find new, mischievous ways to wow our communities and inspire them to wake up and dance,” says Agrawal. “If it’s the same place over and over again it gets boring.” In Chicago,

that means partnering with iconic spaces like Macy’s, or a lakebound boat party on the Spirit of Chicago. “Chicago is our fastest-growing city, and we’re coming up on our one-year anniversary here,” Agrawal says proudly. “It’s been a dream to design experiences for our Chicago community.” daybreaker.com

BOOGIE NIGHTS SIZZLING NEW NIGHTCLUB DISCO BRINGS ’70S GLAMOUR BACK TO RIVER NORTH.

Taking inspiration from the glamour days of Studio 54 (TOP LEFT), new nightspot Disco is bringing the boogie to a new generation.

64 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Chicago has been famously unfriendly toward disco music— the White Sox’s notorious Disco Demolition Night in July 1979 saw the incineration of dance vinyls in the outfield of Comiskey Park and arguably ushered in the death of the genre. It’s with slight irony, then, that just a hip thrust away in River North comes Disco, a Lucite-laced love letter to bygone funk that has become one of the neighborhood’s hottest new spots. All that glitters. “When you look at art, music, interior design, [and] fashion, the 1970s may be the most definitive decade influencing us [now],” enthuses Bonhomme Hospitality’s Daniel Alonso, who conceived the space with the Hindo brothers, whose hot spot Celeste shares an address with the third-floor discotheque. “I’m thinking of this glamorous era that has nothing to do with polyester and and bell bottoms.” The playlist is paramount. “We’re trying to remain honest to the genre,” explains Alonso, whose DJ picks have included Studio 54 alums Lono Brazil and Nicky Siano. Bring the beat (and the booze). Mixology highlights include the Porn Star Martini, a frozen concoction of vodka accented with vanilla, passion fruit, and citrus, all ensconced— fittingly—in a disco ball. “We wanted them to be really complex cocktails,” says head bartender Brendan Diaz, “but still have a fun, free profile that reflected the space.” 111 W. THE JOFFREY BALLET GATHERS AN ALL-STAR TEAM TO REIMAGINE THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC WITH A WHITE CITY TWIST. BY THOMAS CONNORS

“CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON IS CREATING AN ODYSSEY FOR A YOUNG GIRL OF LIMITED MEANS, BUT LARGE DREAMS.” —ASHLEY WHEATER

66

MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

The Joffrey Ballet has been performing perennial holiday favorite The Nutcracker since 1987, and while it’s been tweaked over the years, it’s tied up with a big new bow this season in a production created by Tony-winner Christopher Wheeldon. The choreographer, whose 2014 rendition of Swan Lake was a huge hit for the company, brings the beloved story home, setting this new Nut during the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Wheeldon, who took home a 2016 Tony for An American in Paris, promises a “visually dazzling” production, a real spectacle. And he’s assembled just the crew to make that happen: Tony-nominated set and costume designer Julian Crouch (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz (An American in Paris), and Obie and Drama Desk award-winning puppeteer Basil Twist. What’s more, he’s turned to author and illustrator Brian Selznick—whose The Invention of Hugo Cabret became an Academy Award-winning film directed by Martin Scorcese—to fashion a new narrative for the Joffrey production. “It’s no longer the story of a wealthy child who goes to sleep on Christmas Eve after having lots of delicious food and opened lots of presents and then dreams of candy,”

Behind the scenes: Joffrey Ballet company members rehearse the new Nutcracker (HERE AND TOP LEFT), which will feature puppetry elements and sumptuous, all-new costumes (LEFT AND TOP RIGHT).

shares Wheeldon. “It’s about an immigrant child whose mother—a sculptress— is a worker at the fair. It’s much more about community, family. It’s a little more socially aware, and so perhaps a little more relatable.” No ballet connoisseur himself, Selznick threw himself deep into research for this project, reading everything he could on The Nutcracker, listening repeatedly to Tchaikovsky’s great score, and watching seemingly countless productions of the ballet on YouTube. “I was very insecure for a very long time, because I’m not a dancer, I’m not a musician,” shares Selznick. “But ultimately, I think that it’s because I’m outside that world that it worked. This isn’t just a gloss on the ballet, a matter of changing sets and costumes. The way the narrative ties into the creation of the White City gives the story more depth.” “As choreographer and storyteller, Chris is one of the best,” asserts Joffrey artistic director Ashley Wheater. “He is creating an odyssey for a young girl with limited means, but large dreams. It will have all the magic that people associate with The Nutcracker—the snow, the transformation of the Christmas tree—but at heart, it is the story of human possibilities, of building a family in a challenging world.” December 10–30 at Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. MUSIC MAN FAMILY-FRIENDLY MUSIC GETS A JOLT OF HIP ARTISTRY THANKS TO THE SMART GUITAR POP OF CHICAGO’S JUSTIN ROBERTS.

As a preschool teacher in Minneapolis plying his trade in indie folk groups by night, Justin Roberts learned that kids’ music tastes weren’t so different from his. “If I played a Ramones song and the lyrics were appropriate, the kids friggin’ loved it.” A dozen albums later, the Grammy-nominated Roberts, now based in Chicago, continues to upend preconceptions about family-friendly music. His latest work, Lemonade, jangles with charm, with the musician strumming a ukulele and singing live while his drummer thumps cardboard and paint cans and altcountry star Robbie Fulks lays down tasty licks. “I wanted something that would have variety but be comforting and welcoming, rather than attacking people with my Kermit the Frog tenor,” Roberts quips. In 2017, his music and lyrics will travel the States without him in Hansel & Gretel. “It’s fun to just do something and watch people put it on,” he says of the musical for young audiences. Roberts says he’s “always touring” with his band, usually weekends at kid-friendly hours. As for inspiration, it can come from a friend texting him an idea (“Must Be This Tall”), but audience suggestions (writing something about trucks or, say, Valentine’s Day) will always get an unconventional treatment—Roberts won’t fake it to please. “I can’t write something if I don’t have something in the game.” Roberts plays Old Town School of Folk Music on January 29, 4544 N. With his new album Lemonade just released, his family musical Hansel & Gretel touring in LA, and his second children’s picture book, Henry Hopendower and Other Truly Impossible Things, due in early 2017, two-time Grammy nominee Justin Roberts is keeping a seriously high profile among the kiddie set.

Chicago’s Role as Muse Every morning I drive down Lake Shore Drive, I’m reminded of what I love most about this amazing city. The panoramic route is flanked on either side by majestic beauty. One organic and ever-changing, the other man-made and precise. This iconic drive typifies Chicago’s role as muse – a living, breathing inspiration board for design. Second to none. And more than muse, Chicago has proven to be an ardent caretaker. The city has provided an ideal environment for me to launch my business, fostering each ambitious new dream of mine with resources, talent and opportunity. There is a collaborative nature among Chicagoans that is innate and palpable. Share a dream with others and watch them listen with keen interest, and a desire to nurture it. This is a world class market, fueled by Midwestern values and work ethic. Walk down any street in this city and say, “hello”, and true locals look you in the eye and greet you back. Looking back over the past 20 years, I’m honored to have been invited to activate some of the most premier events throughout Chicago, and beyond. And the prospect of how the design industry will morph and evolve is exhilarating. But what will always humble me most, is having been welcomed into the hearts and homes of those who started out as clients and colleagues, and now are extended family. I can’t imagine any other life, in any other city. Thank you Chicago. Heartfelt thanks,

Green is the new beige. BIOPHILIC DESIGN – Full of greenery. Emphasis on interacting with nature. The idea is an innovative way of designing events that allow us to increase sustainability in which we engage within natural environments. This will be the new standard for events. UNDER THE SURFACE ESCADA FOLDS FOUR DECADES OF HERITAGE INTO A MODERN RESORT COLLECTION THAT SHIMMERS IN SHADES OF WATER, SUN, AND SAND.

BY BETSY F. PERRY

While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of 40 without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers, while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular

obsession in Hockney’s aquatic series). Key pieces include pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients—who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection, which makes stylish dressing practically foolproof, also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eye-popping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardro be. For Wingate, it amounts to a simple design credo: “Be relevant.” 51 E. Oak St., 312-915-0500; us.escada.com

Chicago fashionistas know Ikram Goldman as the city’s premier arbiter of style, but these days she’s got our ear for a different reason: Her star-making appearance on international cult fave band Pink Martini’s just-released new album, Je Dis Oui!, where she sings lead vocals on the Arabic track “Al bint al Shalabiya.” Band founder Thomas Lauderdale (who met Goldman several years ago and to whom Goldman introduced the song, by Middle Eastern star Fairouz) raves of her preparation for the recording process. “She trained ferociously, like an Olympic athlete,” he marvels. “She had daily vocal lessons [and] spent hours and days and nights thinking [about] how she wanted to phrase.

The self-discipline and commitment she demonstrates leave all of us completely thunderstruck ... and in love.” Goldman herself, a selfdescribed “huge fan” of Pink Martini for years, describes performing with the band on stage in Paris and London during its fall 2016 tour as “like an out-of-body experience.” As far as future performing projects, Goldman leaves the door open—at least a smidge. “I love being a shopgirl, and that’s never going to change. But obviously, if Thomas asks me to sing another song, I will jump on it in a heartbeat.” Ikram Goldman performs with Pink Martini in two New Year’s Eve shows at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. pinkmartini.com; ikram.com

WINTER WONDERS NORTH SHORE FASHIONISTA AND BOUTIQUE OWNER ASHLEY QUIC SILVER DISHES ON HER ESSENTIAL PIECES FOR WINTER IN CHICAGO.

Ashley Quicksilver has had a passion for fashion for as long as she can remember. Even at age seven, “[my grandmother] would take me shopping and I would pick out full outfits for her,” notes the effusive brunette. That enthusiasm has now come to life in Athene, Quicksilver’s new downtown Winnetka boutique, which is inspired by the “strong yet very feminine” Greek goddess and takes style cues from rock ‘n’ roll icons and Audrey Hepburn alike. The minimalist space showcases a luxe selection of women’s wear brands ranging from Rona Pfeiffer to Rick Owens—as well as these, Quicksilver’s three must-have pieces for winter. Conquer the cold. The holidays call for serious shimmer, and this season Quicksilver’s accessory of choice is The Woods diamond fringe necklace ($8,900), which provides “just the right amount of sparkle and glamour” while maintaining a down-to-earth vibe. Glam it up. Skip the black dress and make a bold statement with RtA gold leather jeans ($1,190). LET’S HAVE A PARADE! MACY’S CELEBRATES ITS 90TH THANKSGIVING DAY SPECTACLE WITH A FANCY RIZZOLI TOME AND IN-STORE EVENTS FROM COAST TO COAST. BY JILL SIERACKI

When the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way down New York’s Central Park West and Sixth Avenue on November 24, the celebration is set to be even more exuberant than usual to mark the 90th edition this year. “We like to make sure nothing is duplicated— we’re giving people a full breadth of entertainment from the moment the turkey crosses the starting line to the time Santa

officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures

the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

Across the country, in-store celebratory events and products will be unveiled—and a new app even allows users to create their own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “This is a milestone for Macy’s, but I think it’s a milestone for every fan we have across the country,” says Kule. “This is not a New York parade; this is America’s parade.” 111 N. SAVING FACE A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TREATMENT MAKES THE DREADED DOUBLE CHIN A THING OF THE PAST.

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix. “No matter how great the face looks, if the neck doesn’t match it’s a giveaway,” says Chicagobased Dr. Julius Few of The Few Institute, who was part of the original team that developed the product. “It’s also opening the door for a good treatment option for men.” “The perfect patient has isolated fullness in their chin region [but otherwise] good skin qualities so the area will retract after you’ve treated the fat,” adds Dr. Dan Krochmal of MAE Plastic Surgery in Northbrook, who notes that a session takes 10–15 minutes, with 2–4 sessions spaced out over several weeks for optimal results. WADE’S new WORLD By J.P. Anderson Photography By Bob Metelus

As he settles into his role as the Chicago Bulls’ newest star, NBA veteran dwyane wade shares his perspective on the state of the city, why it’s important for athletes to speak out, and what it means to finally be playing for his hometown team.

When the Chicago Bulls signed superstar guard Dwyane Wade to a contract in July, you could almost hear basketball fans across the city thinking the same thing: Finally. After all, hasn’t Wade always been destined to be a Bull? Even having played his entire 13-year NBA career in Miami (where he snagged three championships and was named an All Star 12 times), the Chicago native has maintained a rock-solid connection to the city through his family and his Wade’s World Foundation, which helps underserved communities and focuses on helping youth achieve their goals. Now, as number 3 grooves his game and aims to propel the team back into the playoffs, in an exclusive Michigan Avenue interview he opens up about his new life as a Bull, his perspective on the city’s recent violence, and what he sees as his most important legacy—both on and off the court. Welcome home. How does it feel to be back in Chicago? Thank you. It feels good to be close to family, and it feels good knowing that my mom, who’s my biggest fan, gets to see me play 41 games here. And also just understanding with my family that it’s the right time for me to be back. What appealed to you about becoming a Bull? One thing I always said to myself and to my fans was that if I ever wanted or had to leave Miami for whatever reason, I wanted it to be [to return to] Chicago. How many times do you get the chance to have the career I had [there] and still live out a life-long dream of playing back in your hometown, where your vision of becoming a NBA player started? Even though my career has been amazing—I’ve had way more highs than I’ve had lows—this is to me a great opportunity to control my destiny and do what I want to do with my career.

to be successful. I don’t play for anything but trying to be the best for the team. Obviously the city is struggling with an incredible violence problem, which you’ve experienced personally with the death of your cousin Nykea Aldridge. As someone who has been so active in trying to make young kids’ lives better, what do you think Chicago needs to turn things around? There are so many issues, and it’s going to take a long time to see through all of them. I think the one thing that I try to do and that I think would benefit Chicago is try to focus on a need and try to make that need better. You can’t fix them all. For my foundation, we want

New uniform, same will to succeed: Dwyane Wade brings the ball up court in one of his first preseason games as a Chicago Bull.

to attack the [issue of] the youth, the future, and try to get them now… helping put an infrastructure in their lives, because then they can change things. Talk about your connection to the Willie Mae Morris Empowerment Center—what does that project mean to you? I bought my mom a building years ago, and she started her own foundation out of it. The building was so huge I didn’t know what we [would do with all the space], but I always had a vision and my mom had a vision of a center where kids could be helped with after-school programs, for kids to have the opportunity to live their dreams out and have courses that help them with

those dreams. So my mom put it in motion in Chicago and she and my sisters have been working on it for a few years. Without me they put the walls up, [envisioning] what it could be, and now it’s about me and my team figuring out how we can best utilize the space and get the empowerment center going. I think it could be something great for the community, and that’s what I call legacy—if we’re able to do something special there, that to me is a bigger legacy than what I can do in the game of basketball. A lot of professional athletes right now, like Colin Kaepernick and the WNBA Indiana Fever players, are protesting racial inequality by taking a knee during the national anthem. What’s your perspective on that? I love the fact that athletes are using their platform—they’re using their voice and getting behind the things that they believe in. We all have freedom of speech; we all have the right to say and do the things we want, and they’re doing it, so I applaud them for it. I’m one of the guys who got on stage [with Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and LeBron James] at the ESPY awards [and gave] a call to action to athletes to stand up and use their voice, so it’s great to see athletes doing that. As a father, how do you talk to your kids about what’s going on in Chicago and across the nation right now? The one thing we try to do, me and my wife, is be honest and open with them as much as possible. We try to show them things that are going on; obviously, they’re older [so] they hear about things, and we sit down and talk about it. There’s no answer—I can’t say “Hey, if you do XYZ, it’s going to go XYZ”—but we try to prepare them for what the possibilities could be and show them what’s going on in the world today. You’ve been outspoken about how important fatherhood is in your life; how has your appreciation for fatherhood changed as your kids have gotten older? My appreciation’s always been there. I know how important my dad was in my life for sure, and I knew that I wanted to play a bigger role in my kids’ lives. I’ve always thought that’s one of the most important things I have to do in my life; when God allowed me to be a father of my boys, I knew that was my most important job—to help raise future leaders in this world, and hopefully we can succeed in our dream of doing that.

.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOE ROBBINS/GETTY IMAGES

How has the adjustment been to playing on a new team? I had so many different teams in Miami; in my 13 years I’ve played with so many different guys, so this is similar to that—it’s like coming to training and playing with different teammates. Obviously my surroundings are different, and a lot of things are going on in terms of getting the kids in school and moving into a new house, but from the standpoint of basketball, nothing’s changed. It’s just basketball. I’m trying to learn different terminology and get comfortable in coach’s system, but when we’re out there playing, the jersey at that point doesn’t matter to me as much as doing my job. How has the dynamic been with your new teammates? We’ve got a lot of young guys on this team, and one thing that’s cool this year [is that] these guys are very open to my form of leadership. They understand that I’m a threetime champion, so their ears and eyes are open to the things I have to say to them. They watch me and see what I do and how I take care of my body, how I’m the first one in the gym and I’m the last one to leave most days. Me and [Rajon] Rondo are probably tied for coming first and leaving last [laughs]. And just trying to say to them, be a professional. What are you most excited about for this first season? Just to see how it goes. Individually, I want to see how I respond. I’m turning 35 years old this year, and that’s not a spring chicken in the NBA, so I’m always looking forward to the challenge of seeing how I’m able to keep defying odds. And then as a team, just trying to get this team back on the right path…We’ll make it our mission to make the playoffs and then go from there. What has the response been from people in Chicago to you becoming a Bull? It’s been great—everywhere I go I get a warm ovation, some places I walk in I get hand claps, and a lot of people come up to me saying it’s a very cool thing. Obviously a lot of people would’ve loved to see me get drafted here in ’03… or in 2010, but I’m here now, and I deeply appreciate being here. It’s exciting. With all of your previous success, what’s left for you to achieve? Just to continue to go out and do [my] job, and what comes with it comes with it. When I came into this league, my goal was to be the best player that I can be, and I’m still trying to be that—the best 34-year-old, the best 35-yearold, etc., until I decide to hang it up. I want

CHICAGO! Our most fabulous (and most followed)

The world according to Nathan Michael (clockwise from top of opposite page): A snap of Michael’s life-long friend, Kyle Steed, painting a mural at Low Res Studio; Michael admires the “worn-in, timeless look” of Fulton Market hangout The Betty; friend and fellow photographer John Stoffer looking studious at Zap Props; a plate of barbecue at Green Street Smoked Meats; a shot for J.Crew, one of the sponsors of Michael’s annual “Flock of Fools” trip with fellow creatives.

IN THIS SOCIAL MEDIA-OBSESSED town—where locals document seemingly every urban-fabulous moment of their lives, from Gold Coast lunches to Grant Park strolls— Instagram has created a new generation of Chicago celebrities. Wielding influence and racking up followers via their hyper-curated feeds, these power players show the Windy City in delicious, stylish, architecturally amazing detail. Each of the following five dynamic Chicago Insta-stars boasts their own unique lens, but their work has one thing in common: You can’t take your eyes off it.

@nathanmichael

If content truly is king, Wicker Park resident Nathan Michael is something akin to social media royalty. As the founder of boutique agency Low Res Studio, Michael boasts heavyweight clients like McDonald’s, Knob Creek, and American Express, who rely on the 32-year-old to help them “tell a better visual story” on social media. The Fort Worth, Texas-raised former freelance designer is an impressive storyteller himself on Instagram, where he guides his nearly 100,000 followers to Chicago’s hippest haunts, coolest cafés, and toniest interiors on a #FOMO-inducing feed of fastidiously curated compositions. Tools of the trade: For personal use, iPhone 6+; for professional use, Canon Mark III and Sony a7R II. Inspiration: Forward-thinking Dutch designer Stephen Alesch of design firm Roman and Williams. “There’s this [aesthetic] where they can elevate something, but at the same time it can feel really natural [and] comfortable.” Growth strategy: “[I] started treating my Instagram like a culture guide, so I allowed people into the world that I was working with. That was definitely the thing that allowed that to take off.” Eye candy: “I connect with environments that [have] a piece of nostalgia that makes you comfortable, but at the same time transports you to a new space.” Most frequent comment: “People tagging other people and saying, “We should go here.” It’s cool to see people use [Instagram] as a resource.” For Nathan Michael’s Chicago favorites, visit michiganavemag.com

NEAL KUMAR | THE ARCHITECTURE BUFF @nealkumar

Image inspiration: “I try to find either unique perspectives or capture the light of the city in a way that people haven’t seen before.” Twenty minutes in Chicago: “I would grab some donuts from Do-Rite and walk along the Riverwalk.” Secret of success: “Shooting as much as possible. The more photos you have, the more you’ll find [images] that really jump out and that you enjoy.” Standout images: “[My photos] capture all aspects and all moods of the city, especially with how often the weather changes.” Must-snap spots: “The John Hancock observatory and the Sears Skydeck, especially during fog… I also like Milton Lee Olive Park, which has a nice skyline view.” For Neal Kumar’s Chicago favorites, visit michiganavemag.com

From sultry sunsets to long exposure light trails, Neal Kumar is the man behind the iPhone 7+ that captures some of the Windy City’s most picturesque architectural views on Instagram. A 31-year-old dermatologist and urban photographer who hopscotched from North Carolina to Boston to Venezuela before landing in Chicago, Kumar first began using the photo-sharing app shortly after its inception in 2010; since then, the Gold Coast resident’s artistic images of soaring skyscrapers, historic bridges, and traveling trains have gained him a following of more than 72,000. With smartphone cameras evolving to shoot ever-higher-quality images, Kumar finds it a fascinating challenge “to see how far I can push photography.”

Gogi (“So much banchan, so much happiness!”); cider and pie at home; and cocktail lounge Arbella, “a great new addition to River North.”

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF @CHICAGOFOODAUTHORITY

@chicagofoodauthority

Samantha Roby heard the criticism leveled at many an Instagram-inclined eater: “My friends told me they didn’t need to always see what I was eating.” Unlike most budding foodie photographers, though, the 27-year-old Michigan native has parlayed her passion for documenting the delicious into a successful brand with Chicago Food Authority, anchored by a 153,000-follower Instagram feed showcasing the city’s food and drink scene in drool-worthy detail. Between speaking alongside Sophia Bush at Lipton Chef Fest in October and being crowned as one of 24 must-follow accounts by Buzzfeed (“right under Michelle Obama”), the Gold Coast resident’s hyper-local lens has attracted the city’s eye—and appetite.

Tool of the trade: iPhone 6s. Origin story: “I [thought] it was weird that people were expected to leave social media to find great food suggestions. I wanted [that] to be a part of social media so it took no work to find it.” Digital determination: Before doing CFA full-time, “I’d get off work at 5:30 pm and work on my social till 3:00 or 4:00 am everyday.” Local love: “The Chicago food scene is super-warm and welcoming. It doesn’t feel competitive; [it] feels like a great community.” The aesthetic: “I try not to make anything look too styled, because I still want people to feel like they could still grab a bite of the dish they’re looking at.” Favorite snap spot: “Logan Square. I love [to use] the fun art murals as food backdrops.” For Samantha Roby’s Chicago favorites, visit michiganavemag.com

Logan Square, where she balances being a #girlboss as the SVP at Zapwater Communicatons

Tool of the trade: Canon 5D Mark III. Signature style: “Bright and cheerful, [and] at the end of the day really positive—trying to create content that makes you want to go back and take a second look.”Insta-inspo: “I really like classic movies and trying to modernize that old Hollywood feel.” Biggest challenge: “Patience, growing the channel in the right way. It’s rewarding to watch my feed grow organically and authentically.” Fave Instagram hack: “Planoly really helps me organize the photos to make sure there’s a beautiful flow to the look.” Must-snap spot: The Wabash Arts Corridor. Key to success: “You have to give to the community to get one—you can only truly be successful if you’re commenting and encouraging others.” For Jenn Lake’s Chicago favorites, visit michiganavemag.com

JENN LAKE | THE FASHIONISTA @jenniferlake

In a sea of neutral palettes and faded aesthetics, Jenn Lake’s wildly colorful Instagram account— starring the petite brunette modeling playful outfits against bold Chicago murals and walls—is, in her own words, “a great escape” into the world of street art and personal style. Having joined Instagram in early 2012, the fashion influencer now brightens the days of nearly 100,000 followers (“not users, I hate that word”), many of which have flocked to the account from her blog, Style Charade, which launched in the spring of 2015. The 34-year-old Glenview native now posts from

MATT MARZAHL | THE HIP-HOP HEAD

@multimarz

As a genre defined largely by spectacle, hip-hop is fodder exemplar for social media. Matt Marzahl is proof positive: With crisp candids of Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky, and other en-vogue emcees, the 25-year-old Richmond, Illinois native’s work is an addictive, insider look at contemporary rap royalty. Initially forging industry inroads by producing content for Beats by Dre on behalf of Wicker Park-based retailer RSVP Gallery, the Bucktown resident has since transported his 33,000-plus Instagram followers backstage to Lollapalooza, Sean Combs’s Bad Boy reunion tour, and more of music’s most titanic stages—all without the price of admission.

Tool of the trade: Sony a7. Words of wisdom: “Shoot everything. Be ready for a lot of blurry and unusable shots. Once you sift through those, you’re going to come across moments where the spotlight, the artist, and the shot all line up perfectly.” The approach: “I’ll catch myself shooting far enough away to see what the artist is wearing. What’s the outfit? Are we hanging out? Getting ready to [go] to the club? I want to be able to tell a story with one picture.”Chicago scene: “Chicago has its own original vibe because the city never associated with East or West Coast rap, so the artists had to find their own lane in the industry.” Favorite festival: “Lollapalooza is awesome because it combines so many different things: The landscape of the city, the backgrounds of the huge festival crowds, and all the different artists.” Instagram hack: “Posting portrait-cropped pictures rather than square. The larger picture fills the phone screen and usually means more people will stop and look.” For Matt Marzahl’s Chicago favorites, visit michiganavemag.com

Dr. Joanna Slusky and her team ask every patient, “How can we improve your life?” And they mean it: Offering quality optometric care for both children and adults,

Dr. Joanna Slusky specializes in the treatment of dry eye and allergies while focusing on specialty contact lenses and computer vision syndrome. Services include comprehensive eye exams, medical visits, diabetic eye checkups, and LASIK consultations in a state-ofthe-art, personalized boutique experience.

Dr. Joanna Slusky What differentiates your practice from similar services? We are a “No Puff” and “No Drop” practice. Our Optomap® Retinal Exam gives me an ultra-wide view of the eye. It’s quick, painless, and requires no dilating drops. Taking this test can lead to early detection of glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and even cancer. What trends are you seeing in your area of practice that you’re excited about? Digital eye strain, computer vision syndrome, and dry eyes are becoming an epidemic. Occupational anti-fatigue, blue light-blocking lenses are a new trend for digital device users, even for those who have never worn glasses before. These lenses are designed to alleviate the pain of “staring” at digital devices all day. How can people balance health with a busy and stressful schedule? Reduce eye strain by incorporating the 20/20/20 rule while working

on the computer: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Alleviate dry eye by drinking 8-plus glasses of water per day and adding prescription-strength Omega-3 supplements to your diet. Prevent sun damage and cataracts by wearing UV-blocking polarized sunglasses or transition lenses. What are best practices that people can adopt as we look into the new year? Starting at age 3, everyone should have a full eye health and vision examination every year. Get checked for early signs of glaucoma and macular degeneration, which can painlessly and permanently damage eyes if left unmanaged. Additionally, switch to one-day contact lenses and, to rest your eyes, wear your glasses as least 3 days per week. SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION: 2852 N. HISTORY IN THE (RE) MAKING THREE OF THE CITY’S MOST LUXURIOUS HOTELS ARE PUTTING LANDMARK BUILDINGS TO CHIC NEW USE.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATHAN KIRKMAN FOR SIMEONE DEARY

BY LISA SKOLNIK

The adage “waste not, want not” is particularly relevant in the building industry these days, where it is inspiring developers to deliver adaptive reuse projects that are not only practical and profitable but setting new standards for sustainability, design and luxury in the hospitality industry. Three Chicago office buildings that have recently been turned into luxury hotels—LondonHouse Chicago, The Kimpton Gray Hotel, and The Langham, Chicago—prove the point. In an era when newly built hotels are often generic, these projects are intriguing and unique by virtue of their bones alone. All were born of architecturally significant edifices with landmark status and are undeniably better with age thanks to impressive, astutely executed overhauls. They owe their success to the foresight and acumen of their development and design teams— as well as the generous tax credits landmark status affords. “It’s a smart strategy for real estate developers,” explains John Rutledge, president and CEO of Oxford Capital Group and developer of more than a dozen national adaptive reuse projects, including LondonHouse Chicago and The Langham Chicago.

With sleek public spaces like LH on 21 and the Library, LondonHouse Chicago has given stylish new life to the historic riverside London Guarantee building.

Repurposing landmarks has “allowed me to buy existing high-quality buildings at attractive prices, execute comprehensive redevelopment programs and still end up at a cost basis below what it would have cost me to build from the ground up.” While buying old has allowed development teams to deliver projects that would be virtually impossible to execute if they had to start from scratch, updating these aged gems takes vision, commitment, and ingenuity. Consider the specific challenges and rewards of each of these now-glorious hotels. Turning William LeBaron Jenney’s 15-story New York Life Insurance Building, built in 1894 in what was then the heart of Chicago’s financial district, into The Kimpton Gray Hotel (122 W. Monroe St., 312-750-9012; kimpton

hotels.com) was “much harder than building from the ground up as we did at the Hotel Palomar,” admits General Manager Nabil Moubayed. “You’re handcuffed by all the landmark rules.” Timeconsuming hot spots for the historic renovation team, headed by Gensler, included meticulously restoring the decrepit stone and terra cotta façade and yellowed Georgia Gray marble floors and walls and all the windows, which had to be removed, rebuilt to today’s standards and reinstalled—a feat that “took over a year,” marvels Moubayed. Refurbishing the 1924 23-floor London Guarantee Building’s Indiana limestone façade and 1100 windows to meet contemporary standards, was also an arduous undertaking for the LondonHouse Chicago (85 E. Wacker Dr.,

Light and airy, The Kimpton Gray Hotel features 293 guest rooms with accents of blue that hint of the city’s flag, plus an inviting lobby “living room” area with coffee and tea service in the morning and a wine hour each evening.

But the biggest trials were designing and building a seamlessly synchronized addition for a contiguous postage-stamp sized lot and programming the building. “It required an addition that would be different but aesthetically compatible with the building’s Art Deco style, and 55 different room layouts to accommodate the unique shape and size of the building’s spaces,” explains Rutledge. Oxford Capital tapped Goettsch Partners to design a dazzling, Modernist-inspired glassy addition, and Simeone Deary Design Group to fashion interiors that channel design elements of the Roaring Twenties, reimagined for a contemporary grand hotel. But for Rutledge, nothing was more challenging than transforming the first 13 floors of Mies van der Rohe’s last project, the minimal

International Style 52-story 1972 former IBM Building (now anchor to the AMA) into an opulent Langham Hotel (330 N. Wabash Ave., 312-923-9988; langham hotels.com). “We bought a subdivision of the building at the beginning of the Great Recession, and also had to deal with an international consortium of development, design and construction professionals,” he notes. Rutledge called on van der Rohe’s grandson, architect Dirk Lohan of Lohan Anderson, Goettsch Partners, and London interiors firm Richmond Group to forge luxury spaces that nod to the building’s heritage while reflecting the European sensibilities of the Langham Hospitality Group. The successful adaptive reuse of the IBM Building substantiates van der Rohe’s ideas about universal space. While these buildings were all planned as office spaces, they all have successful new lives as luxury hotels.

Ten years ago, Jack Ryde, the late fourth-generation owner of Swedish bed manufacturer Hästens, set out to create the greatest bed in the world. That sweet dream came true with the company’s blue-checked masterpiece: Vividus. “When we launched Vividus, we never intended for it to be a bed that stops evolving,” says Jan Ryde, Jack’s son and Hästens’ current owner and executive chairman. This fall, the company re-launches its flagship bed, whose construction requires 320 hours of work from four certified craftsmen focused on every detail, from the northern Swedish redwood frame to the hand-sewn layers of horsehair, cotton, and wool in the

customized body-contouring mattress. The piece is quite literally fit for a king—Hästens was appointed Purveyor to H.M. the King of Sweden in 1952 and has served as official supplier to the Swedish Royal Court ever since—and carries a stately $140,000 price tag. For many, though, getting the world’s greatest sleep every night is worth the price. “My first night in the new Vividus was like rediscovering sleep, which was profound even for me—someone who has grown up with Hästens in my DNA,” says Ryde. “It’s the finest bed we’ve ever made.” Chicago Luxury Beds, 1919 N.ClybournAve.,773-6610851; 440 N. Want to throw an out-of-the-box bash? Try themed rooms, says PartySlate founder Julie Novack, which make for “more of an experience—and that’s what people really appreciate.”

Julie Novack describes herself as a “digital marketing geek,” but her event-planning biz PartySlate—a curated site of thousands of images with links to event professionals plus vendor search options—indicates otherwise. “I was on a couple of boards here in Chicago… and I saw there was a gap in the market for people planning larger-scale parties,” Novack says. Here, she tells Michigan Avenue what it takes to throw your best holiday party yet. Get on your feet: “I’m against the sit-down dinner for holiday parties,” Novack says. “Food stations can be really creative and also more social.” It’s the little things: The party doesn’t stop at a great playlist and delicious nibbles, Novack says. “Think through the timing of the night and the details such as guests’ experience when they come in (and) are first greeted.” Think outside the office: “Anything you can do to incorporate your employees into an event is important,” says Novack, referencing a holiday party where employees put together a band and performed live. partyslate.com

EXUDING A SENSE OF WARMTH AND WELCOME, THE DESIGN OF CHEF ART SMITH’S NEW BLUE DOO ITCHEN & GARDEN PAIRS PERFECTLY WITH THE RESTAURANT’S COMFORTING CUISINE. BY J.P. ANDERSON

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Celebrity chef and partner Art Smith has transformed Gold Coast eatery Table Fifty-Two into Blue Door Kitchen & Garden, which boasts healthy new menu options and a rustic-chic makeover for the bustling dining room.

MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

“Change is hard,” says chef Art Smith of the transformation of his Gold Coast gem Table Fifty-Two into Blue Door Kitchen & Garden, “but it’s taken this Southern grandmother and given her a great facelift.” And how: The teensy room’s formerly butter-yellow walls are now a lovely deep blue-gray inspired by owner Fred Latsko’s Indiana farm (“People look a lot better in that color,” Smith notes) with chairs upholstered in

a rustic-chic linen; a handsome bar beckons at the east wall; and the burble of conversation at the space’s dozen tables is now accompanied by the humming energy of an open kitchen. “People want to see the food made,” the Top Chef veteran explains. “They just like being close to the food.” Crafted by Table Fifty-Two veteran chef Rey Villalobos, that food now veers even more toward a Midwestern farm-to-table philosophy— think healthy options like

Brussels sprout and kale salad, purple potato gnocchi with pickled carrots, and organic salmon—but Smith’s touch is still evident on the menu with hearty, Southern-inflected standbys like hummingbird cake, shrimp and grits, and, of course, the celebrity chef’s most beloved dish of all: “The buttermilk fried chicken will never go away,” Smith laughs. Thankfully, some things never change. 52 W. Elm St., 312-573-4000; bluedoorkitchenchicago.com

LET THERE BE LIGHTS A CHICAGO ARCHITECT AND A SAN FRANCISCO SOCIOLOGIST ILLUMINATE THE WINDY CITY WTH ODAMA “LIGHTS FOR THE SOUL.” BY LAUREN EPSTEIN

Imagine rising in the morning and retiring in the evening in sync with the sun, a warm glow filling your living space instead of glaring fluorescent lamps and blue lights from digital devices. Kodama, a lighting collection from Chicago native and Harvard School of Architecture graduate

156  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Matt Fiely and sociologist Alexandria Vasquez, aims to create that experience, bringing natural, meditative light to modern spaces. With a high-design aesthetic, Kodama’s handmade lamps combine local resources like North American black walnut wood with ecofriendly, therapeutic LED

light to emit shades you’d find in the earth and sky, like calming pinks and subtle oranges that mimic the sunrise and the warm hues of a fire. The idea’s origin? Fiely’s Harvard Master’s thesis on Alzheimer’s facilities underscored the need for therapeutic-grade lighting (he also studied

furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen), while Vasquez was working on her PhD in sociology and as an interior designer at Luminaire in River North. “We began intuitively designing lighting that affects one’s state of mind,” Vasquez says. “[We’re] on a

journey to create space that is health-promoting and natural, while also minimal and humble.” Kodama can be found at yoga, tai chi, and holistic health centers throughout Chicago—but we imagine there’s nothing like a slice of the sky right in the heart of the home. kodamalight.com

CAPONE WOULD BE PROUD NOW THAT IT’S CHOCKABLOCK WITH FAMILIES IN MULTIMILLION DOLLAR CONDOS, FORMER GANGSTER HANGOUT THE SOUTH LOOP HAS SUDDENLY BECOME THE NEW (GASP!) LINCOLN PARK.

In the late ’90s, the South Loop was such a no-man’s land that the first serious restaurant to dare plant a flag there—ahead-of-its-time Italian spot Gioco—was hailed as astonishingly edgy. Now a giant Jewel and a Trader Joe’s face off across Michigan and Roosevelt, family restaurants dot the once-deserted streets, and

a series of sleek glass-andsteel high-rises tower over it all, returning the district to the bustle of its days as the home of the city’s posh set. Let’s take a closer look at this historic ’hood. Where the action is: Wabash and Michigan between Roosevelt Road and 18th Street.

The crowd: High-risedwelling yuppie families who consider the North Side a snooze; Bears fans who want to live within walking distance of Soldier Field. Must-stroll street: Prairie Avenue, home to some of the city’s most historic homes and one of the city’s loveliest byways.

Cravings: The decadent Stonington lobster roll on the bar menu at Michelin two-star destination Acadia. Sign of the times: The former location of Al Capone’s former head quarters, the Lexington Hotel, is now The Lex Chicago, a slick tower with luxury rental apartments and a rooftop pool.

Handbag of choice: Louis Vuitton Palm Springs Backpack PM in sugar pink poppy ($2,130), perfect for the office and for jaunts along the lake. Baby name: Clarke—as in Henry B. Clarke, 19th-century Chicago businessman whose landmark 1833 house is the oldest surviving home in Chicago.
