THE NATION’S YOUNGEST MAJOR OPERA COMPANY ENTERS ITS FOURTH DECADE WITH A BIG BANG—AND A LOT OF BRAVOS.
Oft when the hoi polloi thinks of La La Land, visions of ritzy awards shows, vast studio lots, and brass stars on sidewalks come to mind. The culture-challenged may not realize, however, that this mecca of film and television also features renowned performances in one of the world’s oldest and most respected art forms—a craft honed long before the likes of Marilyn
Monroe, Robert De Niro… or Kim Kardashian. We’re talking about opera, of course. Although Hollywood established itself as the capital of the silver screen by the early 1900s, the city did not gain a permanent opera venue until the LA Opera opened its doors just over 30 years ago. Now the company, located at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

in the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, is the fourth largest opera house in the nation. And growing. In fact, when some of LA’s favorite stars aren’t attending red-carpet premieres or sobbing in front of a green screen, they can be found belting out bravas Downtown. (A few even essay the stage. Cheers comedy legend Kelsey
Grammer will costar in the LA Opera’s upcoming production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, opening early next year.) And then there’s the annual Opera Ball, which brings out le tout Hollywood and the crème de la crème of LA’s culture club to cheer on general director Plácido Domingo, who will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his stage debut here in November.
Both critics and celebs alike agree the LA Opera’s original, ground-breaking stagings—including the upcoming Carmen, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Rigoletto— challenge the genre’s stuffy, Euro-centric stereotype. beverly hills is back, baby! For just over a century, this most famous little town of 34,000 swells has had more facelifts than, well, a Beverly Hills housewife—each one better than the last. In between, there have been some relatively quiet periods, as upstart shopping ’hoods such as nearby Robertson Boulevard and Melrose Place have managed to steal a bit of the limelight. Let them bring it. The grand dame of global luxury, fashion, and Hollywood luxe is refreshed again this season with a hot dose of cool— cheeky chic, that is. Leading the “rejuvolution” is the glistening new Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, perched on the enviable corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards. After years of planning, building, and zhushing, the WA—which towers over its swanky neighbor, The Peninsula, and from the wraparound roof terrace of which guests can pick out the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel to the north and the Beverly Wilshire and Four Seasons Los Angeles to the south—plans to give its illustrious neighbors a run for their money. With the first outpost of New York superstar chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (good luck scoring reservations), a jewel-like salon helmed by celeb stylist/hair goddess Tracey Cunningham, and glistening interiors (think Côte d’Azur neo-classical elegancemeets-LA Art Deco swank) by French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, this first West Coast iteration of the famed hotel brand has already become a de rigueur Hollywood power hot spot. Lunch on the rooftop overlooking the Los Angeles County Club? It doesn’t get much better. Down below on forever-ab-fab Rodeo and adjacent drives, BH is upping the ante again with a slew of too-cool-forschool openings and expansions (see A star is born (from top): Fêting the fab new Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills with owner/host-with-the-most Beny Alagem; shooting the beauty breeze with social media goddess/ Moroccanoil spokesperson Jasmine Sanders aka Golden Barbie; doing the carpet Waldorf-style with publisher Alison Miller and Late Spring issue cover star Neve Campbell.

“Beverly Thrills,” page 62). Topping the list, French überluxe-cum-hip house Goyard is debuting its first standalone boutique. Their exquisitely detailed bags, luggage, and leather goods are the latest must-have accessories for the millennial international set. Even icily exclusive Harry Winston, purveyor of jewels to the sultans and movie stars who can afford its sky’s-the-limit prices, is getting in the game with a 5,000-foot expansion of its hallowed fortress-like bastion on the corner of Rodeo and Dayton later this year. Why not grab a few baubles for dinner at Jean-Georges? Not in the mood for Gallic dining and diamonds? The casually inclined are in luck with a host of new dining options, as well, led by the much-beloved Cali staple Café Gratitude, which offers up a little well-being with state-of-the-cuisine-art veggie fare at its new offshoot, Gratitude Beverly Hills, on Canon Drive. Done with your juice cleanse? There’s tea for non-drinkers at the newly reopened American Tea Room and booze and baller music for the rest of us at new nightclub-by-way-of-Spain-and-Miami Tatel, which promises to stay open a bit later than Bev Hills’s more sedate denizens. BH as party town? Why not? While SoCal’s other great style/luxury mecca, Fashion Island, in the OC, celebrates the big 5-0 this month, Beverly Hills zooms into its second century with unabashed pizzazz. As I mark my 20th year in LA, and we christen new offices in—you guessed it—90210, a toast to the town that seduced a young writer and editor years ago. You’ve still got it, girl. Cheers!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Et tu ColEttE, Et tu? In a shock to the fashion world, iconic cult store Colette announced that it will be closing its doors after 20 years as the must-visit Parisian retailer. For such a renowned arbiter of chic, the news of its demise sent shockwaves throughout the industry, and invigorated growing concerns about the current decline in retail, which has taken sizable hits as a result of inflated rents, the manic growth of online shopping, and a measurable shift in consumer behavior. Over-exaggerated claims regarding the death of brick and mortar retailers abound, but are they fair? It’s an interesting question, given that most online retailers—including Amazon, at the very tiptop of the heap—are still not profitable, and given too that legacy retailers have acquired and now own most e-commerce companies. Even today, nine of the top 10 retailers are physical chains, many reporting strong year-over-year growth. Regardless, in this dog-eat-dog
34 LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM
environment, brick and mortar retailers must evolve to survive, and the best see that in all of this chaos there is also opportunity. Colette was early to adopt a culture built on collaborations, pop-up events, and unique in-store activations. While this strategy might have been a bit ahead of its time, the human desire to participate, touch, and see something new and exciting is unquenchable and offers a tangible access point that e-commerce platforms can’t provide. Perhaps successful physical retailers of the future will act essentially as marketing platforms to build the buzz and excitement that ultimately drives online purchases. In the meantime, and until drones become more commonplace, local retailers continue to provide the kind of product immediacy that even the most powerful online sites can’t deliver. Looking outside of the industry, one must also consider the impact of emerging technologies. Just as mobile devices have impacted retail
sales, so too could a transformative force such as selfdriving automobiles. Summon your car so you can drop bags and keep shopping! So in this, our annual Fall Fashion issue, I say “never surrender!” Step away from your screens and take a stroll down Rodeo Drive or your closest shopping district. We live in Southern California—in September it’s gorgeous outside! Speaking of collaborations and service, I’d like to say on a final note that this will be my last issue with Los Angeles Confidential. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff and gracious business partners that have made my years here so rewarding. I wish the new group publisher, Chris Gialanella, best of luck in continuing the magazine’s success. Cheers,

MÉNAGE À FAB MEET THREE STARLETSON-THE-MAKE WHO ARE “BRINGING IT” TO BINGEWORTHY TV THIS FALL. BY SCOTT HUVER
As a fresh fall television season gears up with the requisite sea of up-andcomers looking to grab… well… your attention, a trio of talented young actresses has already arrived armed with that extra special ingredient: buzz, baby.
“MAX IS LIKE HER OWN REAL PERSON. SHE’S NOT JUST THE TOKEN GIRL, OR THE TOKEN ‘HOT GIRL.’” —MIKEY MADISON
MIKEY MADISON, FX
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATIE LAFFOON
After a breakout performance as Pamela Adlon’s often difficult eldest daughter on FX’s fan-fave dramedy Better Things, the 17-year-old actress returns with an even bigger spotlight in Season Two. @mikeymadison Role playing: “Max is like her own real person. She’s not just the token girl, or the token ‘hot girl.’ She has flaws and interesting little things that all different people have… I want people to look at Max, especially girls, and be like, ‘Okay, I’ve been through this, I know what’s going on now’—and maybe take something away from that.” Her path into acting: “I was just painfully and totally shy, very reserved, and worried about saying the wrong thing. But I also had this yearning to express myself and not be afraid to

be sad or angry. I found that outlet through acting. I was allowed to feel all these emotions—then at the same time come home and not have to go through what the character’s going through!” Having two shrinks for parents: “I used to be kind of resentful—like they were constantly psychoanalyzing me. Now I know that they were just trying to teach me to understand what I was feeling and going through… Actingwise, it’s helped me figure out a character’s little twists and turns, and just get in their head more.” Why she LA: “I was
raised here, so I’m very nostalgic about Los Angeles. If I went anywhere else, it wouldn’t feel like home. When I’m away and come back to the city, I’m like, ‘Okay, this is where I am supposed to be.’”
EMILY MEADE, HBO

54 LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM
The joys of being bad: “My character is someone who is looking for trouble, and thus far, she is pretty excited about what she’s doing. She’s kind of a shitty, selfish person, in a lot of ways—I don’t think she’s somebody who demands overwhelming empathy and sympathy. It’s almost bizarre how willing to get herself into trouble she is.” Warning! Adult content: “I said, ‘Yeah, whatever—so what? I’ve done dark things before.’ I don’t have that fear of, ‘Oh no, where will I go that I can’t come back from?’ But until you’re actually there on the cold
streets at night surrounded by people who look like scary pimps in this dark, dream-like world… Hmm… I remember during the pilot thinking, ‘Holy moly— what did I get myself into?’ But like anything, you grow a comfort zone within it.” On holding off on fame until age 18: “I was like, ‘Okay, I’m ready. I’m an adult. Get me out there! I want to win an Oscar by 22!’ But I do feel like once you reach a certain level of fame, you stop experiencing life in the way that everybody else—the characters you’re playing—experience it.
I’ve been insanely grateful to not only get to work through my demons and have my privacy, but also just gain more and more life experience as a citizen of the world.” Why she LA: “Growing up in New York, you’re kind of taught you’re not supposed to like it here! But I always liked to go to LA as a reset. When my life got murky or confusing, I would go to LA and it always cleared me out of a lot of the turmoil inside. I love it. In Los Angeles, even if you’re really hungover, you can just go for a hike and, hey… feel better!”

Marvel’s Runaways’ Ariela Barer, photographed at home in LA.
The 18-year-old actress-cummusician snatched a plumb role in Marvel’s Runaways, Hulu’s entry into the superhero series, as the snarky, purple-haired young crusader Gert Yorkes, a fan favorite from the comic book. @ariela.barer Building “character”: “When this opportunity came up, I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ Just being a part of the coolest, first-ever teenage team to be in the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’—it’s just a dream… It’s a little ridiculous how similar Gert and I are. Her kind of social justice is exactly the sort of thing I’ve been passionate about since I was her age. We share a fiery passion for wanting a better world.” Heroine chick!: “It was our first time doing any superherotype stuff recently, and I’m like, ‘Oh man, I’ve got to get in shape! I’m having trouble just running.’ I don’t want to sell myself as someone who is, like, totally out of shape, who just sits at home all day. But then… I kind of just sit at home all day sometimes.” Acting up: “One of my earliest memories is being 4 and asking for an agent, and my parents being like, ‘What the hell?’ They put me in theater groups, because they were like, ‘No way we’re letting our 4-year-old act!’ They were so afraid of the stageparent thing—‘school is always first!’ This is really the first year I’ve been able to dive in as much as I’ve always wanted to. And it’s been, of course, the best thing!” Why she LA: “Everyone just has completely different narratives and viewpoints that they bring to the table here. You find people with incredible stories and incredible ways of telling them through different art forms. In LA, I never feel like I’m going to fall into some mundane, boring pattern.”

SCENE TREND Slices of heaven: At LA’s divine-est dining spots, the spotlight is on pizza with a big dose of pizzazz, including Zach Pollack’s traditional favorites “on steroids” at his new Cosa Buona in Echo Park (here) and classics with a twist at the Westside’s Pizzana (below) and Felix (bottom).
THE UPPER CRUST SOME OF L.A.’S BEST CHEFS ARE PAINSTAKINGLY PERFECTING THEIR… PIZZA DOUGH? IT’S A MOVEMENT EVEN THE CITY’S HEALTHOBSESSED CAN’T DENY.
It turns out Angelenos do eat carbs—at least in the form of expertly crafted Neapolitan pizza. With top-secret-recipe doughs designed to be lighter and more easily digested, as well as exquisite toppings, LA pizza has spawned a city-wide craze—and a few new places to enjoy a pie this year. Sure, Sotto’s perfect margherita, the burrata-topped “LA Woman” at Jon & Vinny’s, and Nancy Silverton’s much-loved Mozza pizzas are not going anywhere, but the city’s increasing output is raising the bar. “It’s like the sky’s the limit,” says Pizzana cofounder Candace Nelson. “In LA we don’t have the history of pizza like in Chicago or New York, so it’s freeing—we can play with it.” Pizzana (11712 San Vicente Blvd., LA, 310-481-7108; pizzana .com) is a product of kismet. Actor Chris O’Donnell and his wife, Caroline, hired sought-after Italian-bred pizzaiolo Daniele Uditi to make pies for their famous Sunday pizza parties; when Sprinkles founders Candace and Charles Nelson attended, a business was born. “We talked about what makes the perfect cupcake; Daniele talked about what makes the perfect dough—it’s all in the details,” says Candace Nelson. The quintet’s bright, intimate Brentwood eatery makes “slow dough” (which rises and proofs over two days) for its neo-Neapolitan pies such as Uditi’s cacio e pepe and “Messicana” twists on tradition.

Also fostering a neighborhood vibe with cheesychic creations is Scott Conant, of the late Scarpetta, who is producing pizza for the first time in LA at WeHo’s The Ponte Ristorante (8265 W. Beverly Blvd., LA, 323746-5130; thepontela.com). He’s riffing on classics— atop a fine-tuned crust made from Caputo double-zero flour, sea salt, ice water, and fresh yeast—with cool-luxe combos such as squash blossom with anchovy butter and pickled Fresno chilies. Says Conant, “If the pizza is made well, with high-quality ingredients that have been thoughtfully sourced, Angelenos are really receptive. The indulgence needs to be worth it.” The calories are well spent, too, at Lodge Bread (11918 Washington Blvd., LA, 424-384-5097; lodgebread.com), where demand for the bakery’s weekend pizza parties necessitated a full-time menu. Now, in its expanded Westside space, owners Alex Phaneuf and Or Amsalam (2017 James Beard semifinalists) are producing five different varieties daily, including their cult-favorite mushroom, whose crust is made with an organic sourdough starter. “It’s a big, airy, blown-out crust that melts in the mouth,” says Phaneuf.
Dough is something chef Evan Funke of Abbot Kinney’s new Felix (1023 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, 424-387-8622; felixla.com) takes seriously, too—he spent time in Naples, and continues to perfect his cornicione (crust) using a mix of Italian and American flours. He’s chasing “airiness—I want it to be light as a feather.” Funke talks of the allimportant mixed-by-hand recipe with reverence, and considers the margherita a benchmark for all other pizza output. “It’s the dough and three ingredients—it’s very hard to hide behind that. Anything beyond is just window dressing.” At his months-old Cosa Buona in Echo Park (2100 W. Sunset Blvd., LA, 213-908-5211; cosabuona .com), former Sotto partner Zach Pollack (also of Alimento) is on a mission to combine the best of conventional and artisanal pizza styles for a result he says is “very recognizable and perplexingly, staggeringly good.” The secretrecipe dough is fermented and hydrated to give the chewy, lightly blistered crust enough body to stand up to essential toppings like spinach and ricotta or Canadian bacon and pineapple. “Overall the taste should remind of the pizzas of one’s youth— on steroids,” he says. Buon appetito to that.

THE HOT DUO BEHIND THIS FALL’S BIGGEST CHILLER ARE A MATCH MADE IN HOLLYWOOD HEAVEN. BY SPENCER BECK
Scream kings: Following this month’s release of Stephen King’s It, producers/writers/ directors/bromancers David Katzenberg (right) and Seth Grahame-Smith of KatzSmith Productions are developing Beetlejuice 2 with Tim Burton and a feature-length version of Swedish cult short Kung Fury.

David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith are in love with the movies—and each other (in a bromance kind of way). Katzenberg, 34, the son of Hollywood mogul/ DreamWorks cofounder Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Grahame-Smith, 41, who grew up in the anti-Industry environs of Weston, Connecticut, met by chance at CBS in 2006. Katzenberg was right out of film school with dreams of becoming a director. Grahame-Smith was a writer with a couple of well-received books to his name but little movie moxie. Eleven years later,
the dynamic duo’s shingle, KatzSmith Productions, is one of the town’s hottest commodities, with the friends developing, producing, writing, and directing a string of A-list properties, including Stephen King’s highly anticipated It, as well as the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel. When you met, was it instant chemistry? seth grahame-smith: “Yes! We had the same sense of humor. And David and I are just very easily annoyed people. You need somebody you can

“The kids are fantastic—they’re going to make your heart hurt,” says David Katzenberg of the young cast of It.
Bill Skarsgård delivers the appropriately creepy “It” factor as Pennywise in the movie version of Stephen King’s 1986 classic.

bitch and moan with.” What was your first break? david katzenberg: “Warner Bros. took a very early bet on us and gave us a two-year deal. It gave us legitimacy even though we hadn’t produced much.” You have different backgrounds and interests. How does that play out in the office? dk: “Seth is a multi-tasker like no other. He can have four windows open on his computer—writing four movies at the same time. It’s crazy.” sgs: “David’s unflappable. You want him in your foxhole when things are going wrong—and it was a lot of ups and downs over six years to get It produced!” You really captured the creepy factor in the book. sgs: “Creepy is a great word for it. But I think people will be
surprised how substantive the coming-of-age elements are.” dk: “The kids are fantastic. They will make you laugh… and they’re going to make your heart hurt.” There’s a picture of legendary Hollywood producer Richard Zanuck hanging in your office. What does it mean being a “producer” today? sgs: “I was lucky enough to make his last movie with him, and he took me under his wing. But the days of the Dick Zanucks and Jerry Bruckheimers and Joel Silvers are over. There’s so much competition today for so few movies, you can’t just sit on the phone and connect the dots. You have to be on the ground, doing five things at once. I fantasize about the days of first-dollar gross and
producers who had two hit movies and a fleet of jets.” Speaking of legends, any great advice from your dad, David? dk: “He once said to us, ‘I’ll never be disappointed if you’re outsmarted. I’ll only be disappointed if you’re outworked… If you don’t show up to work on Sunday, don’t bother coming in on Monday.’ It gave us a seven-day-week mentality.” You’re both married with young children, too! Do you ever just fantasize about taking a break? sgs: “Yes, it’s for David and me to take a vacation together—riding motorcycles up the coast. No phones, no wives, no kids. Holding hands, watching the sunset. We are the most married straight couple of guys you will ever meet.”

Rodeo Drive never really left, of course, but it’s refreshed and renewed for fall with a slew of newcomers. Luxury/cool handbag staple Goyard (405 N. Shoppers no longer have to ship their patterned bags to Paris for custom, hand-painted monogramming. Over on buzzy Canon, trendy Gratitude (419 N. Canon Dr., 424-3891850; cafegratitude.com) has taken on BH’s steakhouse and Italian mainstays as the hot spot for a health-conscious power lunch. The vegan cult favorite (sister restaurant to Gracias Madre) is pouring its popular CBD cannabinoid-spiked Sour T-iesel cocktail, certainly a new twist for the ladies who lunch! A few doors down,

Dior is marking a major birthday—and giving fashion lovers worldwide a lot to celebrate. A new fall collection by first-year creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, a limited-edition jewelry range, an Assouline book series, and a museum retrospective for the ages each offers its own tribute to le monde de Dior. Standout jewelry and timepieces honor the brand’s history. The Dior VIII Montaigne Tissage Precieux watch comes with three fabric bands—herringbone, houndstooth, and cannage—that celebrate Dior’s classic textile motifs. New additions to the Rose Dior jewelry collection, designed by the house’s haute joaillerie honcho, Victoire de Castellane, include the beloved Pré Catelan necklace in rose gold with diamonds and rose quartz. Luxury book publisher Assouline takes a biographical look back at Dior’s evolution with a series of tomes honoring each of the house’s seven creative directors. The first two, Dior by Christian Dior and Dior by Yves Saint Laurent, are out now, with Dior by Marc Bohan set for a November release. In-house, Chiuri took her own account of the house’s rich legacy with her Fall/Winter 2017 womenswear collection. A journey through the decades, it is saturated in shades of deep blue, inspired by the founder’s devotion to the color. The collection is recognizably Dior but undeniably young and energetic. The most ambitious tribute of all is “Christian Dior: Couturier du Rêve,” a 300-piece museum exhibit spanning 32,000 feet and running through January at Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Taken together, it’s a fitting ode to the man and the house that took fashion to the edge—with a glimpse of what might lay beyond. 309 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-859-4700; dior.com

SPACE SURREAL ESTATE
IN L.A., WHO’S GOT THE BIGGEST HOUSE IS OLD NEWS. THESE DAYS, DEVELOPERS ARE SEDUCING BUYERS WITH WHAM-BAMGLAM “EXTRAS.” BY ALEXANDRIA ABRAMIAN
Nine-figure price tags and four-lane bowling alleys no longer guarantee open-house headlines when it comes to LA’s exploding luxury spec home scene. So what’s a determined developer to do? The answer, it seems, is a near universal focus on outrageously opulent amenities: Think jellyfish viewing galleries, air-conditioned car museums, and rooms made entirely of energy-altering salt. Extreme? Yes. Obscene? Perhaps. Welcome to the tippy-top of the city’s housing market. H2-OH!
As spec homes have become larger, grander, and more expensive, so have water features. Viewing pools—where one side is made entirely of see-through acrylic—have become a hillside must-have for certain developers, while moats are de rigueur for others. When architect Richard Manion created a custom-designed castle-like home for Giselle Bündchen and Tom Brady, he included a moat (or “show-moat,” since the shallow waterway contained no crocodiles). Dr. Dre has since purchased the property. Pushing the water concept into even more outrageous seas is mega-developer Nile Niami. His latest project, The One, has earned the moniker of “giga-mansion” for its mind-boggling 100,000-squarefoot size as well as features that will include a 5,000-square-foot master suite, a 30-car gallery, and a 45-seat

SPEC APPEAL
Mansion envy: These days it’s not the size of spec homes but the amenities that matter, including the ubiquitous modern-day “moat” at hilltop spreads like a recent Bevery Hills listing on Laurel Way (HERE) and Nile Niami’s The One (OPPOSITE TOP).
“A MOAT WILL SURROUND THE ENTIRE PROPERTY, SO IT FEELS LIKE THE MANSION IS FLOATING ON WATER.” —NILE NIAMI
IMAX theater that “rivals any commercial theater,” says Niami. And then there’s the jellyfish room, a lounge area where “jelly fish swim around you and surround you.” A moat will “surround the entire property, so it feels like the mansion is floating on water,” he says of the home that will be listed at $500 million. Yes, that’s right. SPA-TACULAR
Full-service “treatment rooms” and staff for entertaining are included in the price of homes like QVC billionaire Bruce Makowsky’s Bel-Air spread (HERE AND NEAR LEFT), while garages for some listings come stocked with fleets of rare and expensive automobiles. Sold!
While twin kitchens are now practically expected in most spec homes—a show kitchen along with a hidden kitchen where professional chefs can work in privacy— the obsession with ever more specific beauty rooms continues to grow. “Staying in and maintaining your privacy for simple things like dental visits, yoga, massages, and even cosmetic surgery procedures has become the norm in these over-the-top spec homes,” says The Agency’s James Harris, star of Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles. Now that basic beauty services have made their debut, developers are looking to less expected and even more out-there forms of extravagance. Architect Paul McClean recently created an entire
room out of salt for one spec home developer. “Wellness spas are really big right now,” says McClean. “Steam rooms, saunas, hammams, salt rooms, which are entire rooms made out of salt—it’s supposed to be beneficial.” Om-azing. HELP ME!
Currently the most expensive home for sale in the US is a 38,000-squarefoot Bel-Air spec spread developed by QVC handbag tycoon Bruce Makowsky. The $250 million, 21-bathroom, three-kitchen compound comes loaded with a helipad and $30 million worth of cars. As for its truly jaw-dropping amenity? A seven-person staff for two years. At Opus, Niami’s Hillcrest manse, mindboggling details include Roberto Cavalli flooring, a gold Lamborghini Aventador Spyder and a gold Rolls-Royce Dawn that come with the home, as well as a Champagne vault pre-loaded with 170 bottles of Cristal. How to manage it all? No problem. A “house concierge” is included for two years with the $100 million price tag. We’ll take it.

STYLE WATCH
LESS IS BEST THIS SEASON, L.A. TASTEMAKERS ARE TEMPTED BY SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE STYLE. BY ALDOUS TUCK
Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Although this most famous Renaissance figure preceded the earliest watches by mere decades, his idea has stood the test of time. This fall, Swiss watchmakers are embracing simple and timeless designs: Clean lines, uncomplicated dials, thin and seamless construction, and straightforward materials are taking the market by storm—and speaking to those who crave the uncluttered. Best of all? These finely crafted timepieces will make the right style statement for years to come—both in the boardroom and out on the town. Forget Lautner, Ain, and FLW Jr.: It was architect Richard Neutra (1892–1970) who most successfully envisioned modern LA in his structures. Among the most influential modernist architects practicing in America (and, like his contemporary—and close friend and collaborator—Rudolph
Schindler, an Austrian born in Vienna), Neutra completed dozens of buildings in Southern California during the middle of the 20th century, pioneering the International Style along the way. Most known for his residences—including Lovell House (completed in 1929, six years after Neutra moved to
the States) at the base of the Hollywood Hills, Kronish House (1955) on Sunset Boulevard, Singleton House (1959) in Bel-Air, and Kaufmann House (1946), his Palm Springs masterpiece—Neutra also anointed a scattering of civic structures with his long, clean lines and sharp, perpendicular planes,

The latter served as the architect’s office for his last two decades, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, and was inaugurated as a museum in 2014. To this day, the 55-year-old Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design, named after the architect’s 1954 book espousing eco-conscious building, lives on in Silver Lake under the stewardship of Neutra’s son, Dion, himself an acclaimed LA-based architect who started training with his father at the age of 11. CALIFORNIA DREAMING FORGET THE CAR. WITH A CHIC NEW CITY-ADJACENT HOTEL AND LOTS TO DO IN THE “ZONE,” IT’S TIME TO HOP A TRAIN TO SANTA BARBARA. BY KATHRYN ROMEYN
Paradise re-found (clockwise from top left): The newly opened Hotel Californian sits in a primo spot between downtown SB and the sea; specialty cocktails and Euro-meets-Cali gourmet fare mark the menu at nearby Somerset Restaurant; a peerless view from the rooftop pool deck of Hotel Californian; the family-friendly MOXI museum invites interaction.
Now is not the time to write off LA’s northern neighbor, Santa Barbara, as a sleepy surf town. The postcard-perfect enclave known as the “American Riviera” has far more than local vino on tap this fall. For one, there’s the justopened, uberluxe Hotel Californian (36 State St., 805-882-0100; thehotel californian.com). A-list designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard studded the bespoke Moroccan-meets-Spanish Colonial property with more than a million pieces

of indigenous, custommade tile. Original artwork references Old Hollywood in a wholly modern way, while cobra-like amulets— which represented great wisdom in ancient Egypt— decorate the 121 rooms and suites that boast tile wainscoting, Mascioni linens, mashrabiya paneling, and $3,700 Kallista shower heads. Sweet. The exotic Moorish inspiration goes beyond Bullard’s plush, colorsplashed guest rooms. The grand shared spaces of the circa 1925 hotel (the original façade was preserved)—including a glam ballroom, rooftop pool, and Moroccaninspired spa—also feature his distinctive six-point-star theme. But the designer doesn’t expect guests to stay ensconced in his hideaway, however idyllic.
Says Bullard, “Hotel Californian is perfectly placed at the end of State Street, where the beach and the town intersect, making it a primo location to enjoy all that Santa Barbara has to offer.” On foot, for a change! Indeed, the hotel’s Funk Zone-centric neighbors include MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation (125 State St., 805-770-5000; moxi .org) (Law & Order’s Dick Wolf and wife, Noelle, are major benefactors), which recently opened with 70 interactive family-friendly exhibits, such as a studio where visitors can make soundtracks to Fox Studios film clips. And while the hotel’s twin restos—led by executive chef Alexander La Motte—promise to titillate taste buds, the profusion of dining destinations within
walking distance begs for an extended stay. The months-old Santo Mezcal (119 State St.,805-8833593), just down the street, focuses on fresh seafood and boasts a super-creative mixology program that highlights its namesake and of-themoment spirit. Around the corner, Somerset Restaurant (7 E. Anapamu St., 805-8457112; somsersetsb.com), with chef Lauren Herman (Lucques, A.O.C.) in the kitchen, wows diners with its California farm-to-table fare (all ingredients are exclusively sourced within a 100-mile radius) and European “grand café” atmosphere, which blends white Calacatta marble and zinc tabletops with original 1950s sconces. Good taste in every sense—like dreamy Santa Barbara itself.

STYLE IN VOGUE Well Framed
Artfully unkempt: “Sometimes the beauty of a moment is in the imperfection,” says Val Garland, makeup artist behind the on-trend lips at Giambattista Valli’s Fall runway show. below: Powermatte Lip Pigment, $26, at NARS.
The effortless, feathered eyebrow takes LA by storm. Just as accents vary from city to city, the same holds true for eyebrow trends. “Each [region] takes its beauty cues from different places, which makes each look super distinct,” explains Jared Bailey, global brow expert for cosmetics giant Benefit. And on the West Coast, it’s the feathered brow that’s all the rage. “In LA, styling should look effortless,” says Bailey. “A feathered brow is the simplest way to look effortlessly pulled together, and also hints at a very bohemian vibe.” To pull it off, try Benefit’s Precisely My Brow Pencil ($24) in your true shade to give a base shape, then use the same pencil two shades darker to flick up through the brow toward the hairline. Finish by directing the hair up and out with the brand’s 24-HR Brow Setter ($20, pictured below), a setting gel. 8387 W. 3rd St., LA, 323944-0600; benefit cosmetics.com

BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE
Forget “Instagram lips,” the all-too-ubiquitous look combining lots of lip liner with matte lipstick—this season’s trendiest makeup trend is intentionally unpolished. From Rosie Assoulin to Giambattista Valli to Preen, smudged, blurred, and faded lipstick in an array of red tones was
the star of this fall’s fashion shows, making lived-in pouts en vogue. “Sometimes the beauty and modernity of a moment is in the imperfection,” says makeup artist Val Garland, who created the “just-snogged” lip look for Preen, as well as Giambattista Valli’s patchy, high-voltage gloss.
Garland suggests first applying your lip color as you normally would, then using a fluffy eye-blending blush (or your fingers) to soften the outline of your lip shape. Try the full coverage Powermatte Lip Pigment from NARS ($26; 8412 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, 310-623-1730;

"I want to be stretched and do things that scare me a little bit," says Ozark star Laura Linney, here rocking a GG wallpaper print dress, $2,500, and studded leather pumps, $2,290, at Gucci.
THE TALENTED MS. LINNEY Fresh off a Tony-nominated Broadway run in The Little Foxes, the formidable LAURA LINNEY makes a big thrills return to the not-sosmall screen in the new Netflix drama Ozark. by J.P. ANDERSON photography by JIM WRIGHT
With four Emmys, four Tony nods, and three Academy Award nominations for projects ranging from Tales of the City to The Big C and John Adams, Laura Linney is one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation. Make that any generation. The New York native and Juilliard grad still pushes herself like few others in the Industry—as in her just-wrapped turn in Lillian Hellman’s classic The Little Foxes, where she and costar Cynthia Nixon drew rapturous reviews for swapping leading roles each night. Now it’s back to TV for drama of a different sort: the just-released Netflix original series Ozark, where the 53-year-old costars with series creator Jason Bateman as husband and wife on the run from a drug cartel. As Linney prepared for the series premiere, she chatted with Los Angeles Confidential about working with Bateman, her proudest career moment, and what thrills her in Hollywood. You’re in the home stretch of The Little Foxes. How does it feel to be doing your last few shows? I’m a little in denial about it—if I think about it too much, I get very, very sad. It’s been just a fantastic experience. It’s been hard, and it’s been challenging, and it’s been demanding and frightening, but it’s one of those full-on experiences that you don’t get very often. So I’m going to miss it terribly; I’m going to miss everyone involved. And next up is Ozark—a very different kind of role. What drew you to it? It was all about Jason Bateman. I’ve known him over the years,
but as an acquaintance. I’ve always liked him. I’ve always been fascinated by his talent and how he lives his life, and just sort of all things Bateman. So when he asked me to do this, I wasn’t looking to do television, but I wanted to work with him. And because this is really so much his project, and he’s so dedicated to it and so invested in it, I thought that would be a good way to spend my time. It’s not the most obvious onscreen pairing—you’re known for your dramatic expertise and he’s a comedy pro. What was it like to join forces? It was no surprise to me that he’s such a great dramatic actor, which he really is. If you are that grounded of a comic—if your comedy comes so much from situation, and its sort of interior timing—there’s a lot there. We had a great time. I find that most comics are more serious, and most serious actors are more comic. There’s sort of an undertow of the other that we have—the opposite undertow. What excites you about the project? It has its own sort of tone. There’s been a lot of comparison to Breaking Bad, which is such a fantastic show, but it really does have its own tone. It’s mysterious and it’s dark, and it’s murky. I hope people like it as much as I do. Netflix also just announced the development of a revival of Tales of the City. That was such a big break for you early on, and so many people are passionate about it. How do you feel about reentering that world? It’s going to be wonderful, and I’m very, very curious to see

“THE THINGS THAT HAVE TURNED OUT REALLY WELL, YOU HAVE SUCH LITTLE CONTROL OVER… [BUT] I CAN ALWAYS TELL WHEN I’M READING A SCRIPT IF MY ACTOR BRAIN IS TURNED ON. IF I JUST CAN’T HELP MYSELF, THEN I KNOW I HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO IT.” what they all come up with. And you know it’s not official official; we’ll see if it makes it to the next phase. I hope so. I told a friend yesterday that I was interviewing you, and he said, “She will always be Mary Ann to me.” Oh, I just love it when people say that. How does it feel knowing that Tales role has had such an impact on people? Tales is, with its enormous heart and its humor and its sort of magical quality, a politically important piece of entertainment. It was necessary at the time; it’s still necessary I feel. It’s one of those pieces of entertainment that helped our culture, and means a lot to a lot of people. I’m always so proud when anybody mentions it. My son’s middle name is Armistead for a reason. You’ve made very smart choices in your career. What do you look for in a project? Well, thank you. I try. There are always things that don’t work. The things that have turned out really well, you have such little control over it that some of it is sniffing out just to see if the right elements are involved. Is there potential for something good happening? Sometimes there’s no reason for it to be good, and it just turns out [that way]. A lot of it is script. What’s the potential of the story? Is it actable? Because a lot of things are not actable. I’ve said this a lot—you get the scripts and they’re not written to be acted, they’re not written to be turned into a piece of entertainment or a piece of art. They’re meant to be greenlit. They’re not written thinking about the actual performance aspect or the production side of it. So I really look to see what’s there, and I can always tell when I’m reading a script if my actor brain is turned on, if I start working on a project before I finish reading the script—if I just can’t help myself, then I know I have to pay attention to it. And then of course the people involved—because even if you have a great script and then you have people who you don’t see eye to eye [with] or you’re just not going to get along, that’s just not fun anymore at my age! You’re one of the few actors who have moved very fluidly between television, film, and stage. Which is your greatest passion? It used to always be stage, because I grew up in the theater and I studied the theater, and film and television were the big surprise for me. But the more I do film and television, the more I enjoy it, because they are very separate—your preparation is different and the execution is different. What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far? Getting into Juilliard! More than anything, that was the most important thing, as opposed to any job. I could point to five or six jobs that were important and [in which] I grew and I was recognized for the work and all of that. But really, at the end of the day, the most important thing that has happened to me was getting into that school. You’ve maintained a close connection to Juilliard. I gave a commencement speech a few years ago, and then I was asked to join the board of the school. So I’m a trustee there, and I try to stick
my head in the drama department as much as I can whenever I have the time. I love being involved there. I love the faculty. I love the students. It’s a place where my concentration sort of works on a different level. And it’s an excellent reminder for me about the core of our work and why we do it. You have a 3-year-old, Bennett. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve experienced with motherhood? I think it was just how ready for it I was. You know, I had a child very late in life. It was something I didn’t think was going to happen and then when it did, there’s an extreme sense of gratitude that comes with that—when it almost passes you by and then doesn’t. So I have loved every second of it and continue to, and I’m constantly amazed and delighted and challenged by all of it—even in the moments that people complain about. When Bennett was an infant and I was up with him at 4:30 in the morning and sleep-deprived and all of that, I can remember sitting with him and just having this overwhelming sense of, I’ve wanted to be right here for 20 years, and all of a sudden here I am. The benefit of being an older parent is everyone sort of says, “Oh, your life is going to change,” and I was very ready for my life to change. And they’re just fun—or at least I find being around my child a lot of fun. And it’s challenging. You have the moments where you think, “How do I deal with this? How in the world do I deal with a toddler who doesn’t want to do what I want him to do?” You know, how do you help a human being navigate through the minefield of emotions when they’re first really experiencing them, without being too overbearing? What’s the balance? What’s the right level of involvement as far as helping someone discover all that and then learning how to navigate themselves through it? [It’s] big, important stuff—but I’m having a great time. With all the acclaim you’ve received over the years, what’s left for you? What are your goals? My thinking is not as specific as that. I wish it was. It would make a lot of people very happy if I could point to things and say, ‘I want to do that!’ I just want to be better at what I do, and I want to keep learning. And I want to be stretched and do things that scare me a little bit, and experience the work that all these wonderful playwrights over the decades and centuries have done. You just want to contribute. The arts are important, and it’s worthy of our time to champion [them]. I just feel like there’s so much more to discover. Are there any talents out there whom you really admire and would love to collaborate with? There are tons and tons. I hope at one point I get to work with Maggie Smith in some sort of capacity. Or Judi Dench. If you weren’t an actor, what do you think you’d be doing? God only knows. I have no idea. I hope I’d be okay [laughs], but I really don’t know if I would be. I am just so grateful I am right where I should be. And I know a lot of people never get to that place, so I certainly don’t take that for granted, ever.

Lighting up the runway with irreverent sensuality and a bold sense of wonder, designer Alessandro Michele has Gucci burning through the fine fashion firmament. by RACHEL FELDER
THIS AND OPPOSITE PAGE: PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GUCCI
“I am trying to cause a little revolution, a different way to talk about beauty and sexiness,” Alessandro Michele said upon his appointment as Gucci’s creative director in 2015, a sensibility seen throughout the house’s recent Fall/ Winter collections (this page and opposite page).
FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, GUCCI HAS SET THE FASHION WORLD ABLAZE. And to many of its fans, the brand’s amazing popularity— marked by waiting lists for its most buzzed-about items, with velvet-roped lines of shoppers snaking outside its flagship US boutiques, as well as a global sales spike of more than 40 percent through the first half of 2017—--can be attributed to one man: Creative Director Alessandro Michele. Michele, a 44-year-old native of Rome, has infused the Gucci line with a theatrical sense of confidence that’s hard to resist, from clothing featuring brash, colorful prints to shoes and bags accentuated with unexpected flourishes like fur or embroidery. A key element of its current success has been the familiarity of certain details, like horse-bit toggles and thick red and green piping, that come straight from the brand’s archives—although their current versions have been spunkily updated for the day’s zeitgeist. As Michele told Vogue in 2015, soon after his appointment to his current role, “I am trying to cause a little revolution inside the company—to push another language, a different way to talk about beauty and sexiness.” The house was founded in Florence nearly a century ago, in 1921, with an initial focus—like Prada, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and other now-iconic high-end brands—on luggage and leather goods. After several successful decades, Gucci’s popularity was amplified in the 1950s and ’60s when celebrities began to embrace new items like rigid top-handled purses and golden belt buckles in the shape of large capital G’s, oriented, like the faces of Janus, back to back. In that era, the brand became virtually synonymous with a glitzy, glamorous, international lifestyle. “It was very identifiable,” says Cameron Silver, a fashion historian and founder of the vintage retailer Decades. “It identified that aesthetic of a very jet-set traveler. The bamboo handle and the double-G motif are iconic.” A few decades later, Gucci redefined itself as more than
LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM 101
just a source of luxury accessories. Under designer Tom Ford—who joined the company as creative director in 1990, initially overseeing women’s clothing design and gradually transitioning into a larger, more unisex design role—the brand began to focus as much on clothing for women and men as on accessories. Ford’s pieces were distinguished by an overt, ultraconfident sexiness. “He gets there and injects an almost American, Halston-like DNA into Gucci, and there’s this spectacular revival,” says Silver. The brand became highly fashionable again, with memorable pieces like extra-trim women’s tuxedos, cut in velvet and designed to be worn without a shirt underneath, a look still emblematic of the period. Ford stayed at the house (ultimately also overseeing design at Yves Saint Laurent, which shares ownership with Gucci) until 2004, when he left, along with Gucci Group CEO Domenico De Sole, a key champion of both Ford and the brand. The designs of his successor, Frida Giannini, lacked the assertive oomph that had become a component of Gucci’s appeal. “The clothes lost a bit of their sensuality,” says Ken
FLOWER POWER Alessandro Michele’s touch reaches from fashion to fragrance with another striking creation for fall: Gucci Bloom (100ml for $124), a confident and complex floral scent that reinvigorates the house’s storied fragrance heritage. Jasmine, one of Bloom’s most prominent notes, is complemented by rarer aromas, like that of the flower of the Rangoon creeper, which has never before been used in a perfume. Grown in southern India, the blossom opens at dusk, gradually deepening in color from white to pink to a deep red. Gucci Bloom similarly evolves as you wear it, from an initial floral scent to a more intense, earthier tone that’s especially suited to fall. The fragrance is bolder and less delicate than the brand’s other women’s offerings, like Eau de Gucci (which debuted in 1993 with its mix of citrus, tuberose, and lily of the valley) and Envy (a fresher, grassier fragrance introduced in 1997). Bloom is, essentially, a perfume for Michele’s modern woman: feminine and beautiful but never predictable or shy. (Appropriately, actress Dakota Johnson, artist Petra Collins, and model Hari Nef are at the center of Bloom’s ad campaign.)
While the company introduced its first perfume, Gucci No. 1, in 1974, and has had international success in the arena ever since, it has increased its focus on fragrance over the last decade, unveiling more scents than ever before, like 2009’s clean, youthful Flora and, in 2010, the bold Gucci Guilty. But Bloom is the only perfume with Michele’s thorough input and imprint. To create its powerful floral blend, he worked with revered perfumer Alberto Morillas, whose résumé includes Calvin Klein’s CK One and Cartier’s Panthère de Cartier. The result, like most of Gucci’s offerings, seems to bridge a gap, appealing as much to a sophisticated socialite who’s been a Gucci fan for decades as it does to a young woman, newer to Gucci, heading out for a night on the town.
Fall/Winter 2017 Runway Standouts
Downing, fashion director at Neiman Marcus. “That Gucci guy and girl want to be noticed. They’re attentiongetting—they are not wallflowers, and they want clothes that have a real sexiness to them.” And so early 2015 saw the installation of a new creative director, Alessandro Michele, who had quietly worked on the Gucci design team since being hired by Ford in 2002. His take on Gucci’s sexiness is empowered and modern, exemplified by the fluid cut of a boldly printed dress, or the transparent fabric on an otherwise straightforward, high-neck blouse. But the real power of Michele’s designs comes from being rooted in the brand’s most identifiable motifs, reworked in a quirky and confident way that makes them modern but still indelible; often the designs’ over-the-top impact anoints them with true statement-piece status. “There’s the great love of tradition in a very audacious way, where he has taken the sensibility of heritage and love of things that feel very recognizable and he’s twisted them in a way that makes them feel übercool and of-themoment,” says Downing. Case in point: Michele’s reinterpretations of Gucci’s popular loafers, embellished with embroidered designs or giant faux pearls and updated with a clunky high heel and—in what might well be the most copied shoe of the last few years—lined with fur and turned into a leather backless slide.
“ALESSANDRO DOESN’T CREATE FASHION FOR THE SAKE OF A TREND; HE CREATES COLLECTIBLES. THAT PUTS A LOT OF JOY IN THE CUSTOMER’S HEART.”— ken downing “The chord that Alessandro’s really struck is that there’s an enormous love for the idea of Gucci,” Downing adds. “That’s a love that began when Tom Ford took over that fêted house decades ago, and as the house began to fall from favor, it left behind many loyalists to the Gucci brand who were truly yearning for something exceptional.” The timing of Michele’s promotion couldn’t have been better. As Lisa Aiken, retail fashion director at Neta-Porter, explains, “Alessandro’s first collection came at a point when actually everything was a little more stripped back. We were coming off the back of what was termed ‘normcore,’ so it brought back this quite romantic vision of what fashion could be. It inspired a much more emotional reaction.” In early 2015, the first presentations of Michele’s creations—a group of men’s pieces that he famously whipped up in just a few days, followed by womenswear a month later—garnered raves from both the
INSIDE JOB Alessandro Michele’s assertive trademarks aren’t limited to Gucci’s sturdy-heeled shoes or jackets with expertly cut sleeves. The brand recently unveiled Gucci Décor, a collection of items designed to adorn living rooms and dressing tables while sharing the vibrancy that has come to distinguish his wearable pieces. “He loves abundance,” says Neiman Marcus’s Ken Downing. “[He has an] ability to create this romantic, effusive abundance that captures the imagination and draws you in.” That extravagant sensibility lends itself especially well to décor; it’s easy to imagine a single statement piece accenting an otherwise understated room. The collection includes ornamental pillows, trays, richly lacquered chairs with embroidered cushions, and small tables, all made in Italy. It features many of
press and shoppers, who responded viscerally to his spunky retro-inspired prints, his elegant draping, and a broad color palette that included brights, neutrals, and muted shades of mustard, olive, and maroon. Unlike some fine fashion pieces that evoke an emotional reaction in their buyers, Michele’s items are of-the-moment but don’t feel as if they’ll go out of style next season, plus they sell for a price that’s admit-
tedly high but less astronomical than other brands. “Alessandro doesn’t create fashion for the sake of a trend; he creates collectibles,” says Downing. “In general terms, of all of the brands that hang in the luxury spectrum, it is a lot of look for the money you’re spending. That puts a lot of joy in the customer’s heart.” In his handful of seasons as creative director, Michele has offered new iterations of some of the designs that have most resonated with Gucci’s fans, from boldly printed dresses and separates to white leather sneakers covered with serpents or bright crimson flowers. “I love the fact that he is evolving and developing rather than starting fresh every season,” says Net-a-Porter’s Aiken. “That gives women the sense of ‘Actually, I’m going to purchase this; it is an investment, it has longevity, it’s going to feel relevant for seasons to come because he isn’t radicalizing every season with something new.’” She adds, “I think he’s being very smart.”

Michele’s bold signatures: embroidered images of animals, such as slithering serpents or roaring lions; the use of rich velvet; and a vivid palette that includes colors immutably associated with Gucci’s heritage, like crimson red and bright green. Among the line’s standouts are the deeply scented candles encased in decorative porcelain vessels (which are designed to be keepsakes long after the fragrant wax has burned off). The elegant containers are made by Richard Ginori, a centuries-old producer of china, founded, like Gucci, in Florence. Ginori is, not coincidentally, owned by the same parent company, and for the last few years Michele has overseen that brand’s creative direction in addition to his duties at Gucci. 347 N. HOW DID TWO HOSPITALITY HONCHOS MAKE CATCH LA THE HOTTEST THING SINCE, WELL, CATCH NYC? BY MICHAEL VENTRE
What works in New York doesn’t always work in LA, and vice versa, especially when it comes to dining out—food, service, and vibe are often as disparate as “Fuhgettaboutit!” and “Have a peaceful day!” But somehow, Gotham restaurateurs Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm have achieved epicurean détente between the East and West Coast via Catch, their WeHo buzz hive situated on a rooftop at Melrose and San Vicente. The brand has been a foodie magnet in their NYC Meatpacking District location, as well as in Dubai and Mexico’s Playa del Carmen. The LA version has similarly busted out big, despite some initial concerns. “I thought it would have taken us longer to reach all the people in the city, and that there would have been a much slower buildup,” Remm explains. “But it was immediate.” Mind-blowing seafood is the lure. And while the place has flourished via its vibrant bar scene and a young, celeb-y clientele, Catch LA starts with with the basics. “First and foremost, get the food and service right,” says Birnbaum. “We’re very conscious of that. Maybe it’s because we came out of the nightclub business, but we weren’t worried about the vibe. We have vibe coming out of our eyeballs.” The partners recently sold 50 percent of their EMM Group to Tilman Fertitta, so look for expansions to other buzzy locales. But for now, LA has a trophy-sized Catch. 8715 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, 323-347-6060; catchrestaurants.com/catchla

Back in the ’80s, when fashion trends were all about futuristic styles and bold colors, Oliver Peoples did the unthinkable—it looked to the past, “challenging the ostentatious eyewear trends of the era with its decidedly classic aesthetic,” says creative director Giampiero Tagliaferri. Three decades later, the LA brand’s latest blast to the past has resulted in a nostalgic yet celebratory 30th anniversary collection, which features relaunches of its iconic ’80s styles in 18k gold and hand-engraved feather filigree. Oliver Peoples has always been an embodiment of Los Angeles culture, incorporating elements of the city into its designs, a sensibility reflected in this year’s monumental campaign with illustrious photographer Peter Lindbergh. “Desert Stories” features striking black-and-white photographs set against the powerful spare landscape of the Mojave Desert. Tagliaferri says the project “encapsulates a Californian’s tendency to follow their curiosities, stray from the beaten path, and create unforgettable moments in the most remarkable places.” Retro and cool—and perfectly synonymous with the city—Oliver Peoples will undoubtedly remain a Los Angeles fashion staple for the next thirty years. Perhaps their motto still says it best: “Never a trend, always in style.” 8642 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, 310-657-2553; oliverpeoples.com

BEDAZZLE ON A BUDGET: “I love the adorned trend that started last fall. I’m a pretty minimalist dresser, so I get excited about all the beading, embroidery, sequins, and fringe that are decorating bags, shoes, and apparel. The best part is this trend [is accessible] to any budget.” SPICE BY THE SAND: “Javier’s (7832 Pacific Coast Hwy., Newport Beach, 949-4941239; javiers-cantina.com) never disappoints! I always order either the crispy chicken tacos, shrimp ceviche, or seafood enchiladas. When I was younger, my family always celebrated special gatherings at the Laguna Beach location. I never get tired of it!” HIGH-DESIGN HUB: “I love finding pieces from all over. That’s part of the enjoyment of shopping, experiencing different boutiques and brands. But if I had to name one [favorite], it would be Neiman Marcus (601 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach, 949-759-1900; neimanmarcus.com). Their assorted mix of luxury goods under one roof is incredible.”—charles trepany
