Let’s make love! And they did! Marilyn Monroe and her husband, Arthur Miller, along with her sometime lover Yves Montand and his wife, Simone Signoret, on the set of Let’s Make Love, filmed in The Beverly Hills Hotel’s Bungalows 21 and 22 in 1960.

HELLO, NORMA JEAN TO MARK MARILYN MONROE’S 90TH BIRTHDAY, THE STAR’S FAVORITE BUNGALOW AT THE BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL IS REBORN.

Back in the day, when Hollywood was a small town, The Beverly Hills Hotel was ground/grand zero for LA’s celeb set. Having recently marked its 100th anniversary, the legendary “Pink Palace,” where Liz Taylor cavorted pre-Hilton/ Kardashian times and movie moguls cut deals that defined American

16

culture, is rebirthing its iconic bungalows (21 in total), with new décor, up-to-date amenities, and, in the case of five of those A-list abodes, a special Golden Age-of-Tinseltown sparkle that will commemorate some of the big screen’s greats. Bungalow 7, a favorite of Hollywood’s “second” blonde bombshell,

LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

Marilyn Monroe (lest we forget Jean Harlow), will debut next year to much fanfare. Incredibly, this year would be Monroe’s 90th birthday. Famously, the 1950s sex goddess sensation, who off-set eschewed Bev Hills and resided in her own, residential bungalow in Brentwood, spent countless hours holed up at The

Beverly Hills Hotel, dining at her favorite table (Number 6) in the Polo Lounge, and even filming a movie, the appropriately named Let’s Make Love, with one of her erstwhile lovers, French star Yves Montand, in Bungalows 21 and 22. That movie, in fact, would be the penultimate one for the complicated

actress, who died from a drug overdose, at age 36, two years later in 1962—the quintessential Hollywood cliché of a star created and destroyed by the system. Oh, but what a cliché! In this town—in Bungalow 7—Marilyn will always live on, a haunting reminder of the price of Hollywood fame in all its noir-ish, irresistible glory.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

C

oitus disruptus! Got your

attention? Let’s talk the fabulous, disruptive world of social media. Dating (sex),

family, friends, business. There’s no avoiding our current obsession with Insta-fame and -fortune via the handheld devices that have made Andy Warhol’s prophetic dictum that we would all be famous for 15 minutes in the future come true. #thefutureishere

36  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

In this issue, we celeb-rate five of LA’s social media lions, roaring forth in categories stretching from fashion to the arts to food and music (see “Insta-LA!,” page 112). These oddly elusive yet everpresent purveyors of modern-day culture and society capture, in quick, visual snaps, the public’s imagination in the same way that Hollywood’s star machine of yore drove fans into movie houses as a respite from the dreary reality of their quotidian existence. Contributor and former LAC deputy editor Erin Magner gets to the heart/art of these post-millennial superstars, digging beneath the gloss to discover the personal secret of sustaining success in our current world of the quick fix(ation). Flash forward—or backward? You decide. In fact, the flash of fame in Tinseltown today is increasingly driven not by movie stars’ passel of PR specialists but by their personal engagement with the public via social media. One tweet by our cover star, Zoe Saldana, who has amassed an army of followers on her own sites (@zoesaldana), gets more attention from the general public than an expensive billboard on Sunset Strip. Go see Saldana’s latest breakout role, opposite Ben Affleck, in Live by Night (see “Out of This World,” page 106) to gauge the super-smart/sexy actress’s mega talent. Check out her Instagram site to get to know her as a person. Now that’s what we want. Intoxicating. (Or is it just toxic? You’d have to ask the stars. Tweet them.) There’s no fighting the march of progress. In just a century and a bit, horses have been replaced by

automobiles, radio by television, typewriters by computers, and so on. In the last decade-plus alone, Facebook has rendered the high school reunion passé, Uber has almost put the taxi business out of business, and Tinder and Grindr have made bar hook-ups positively old-fashioned. Is this editor’s note itself just a tad too old school? Normally, it’s a place to wax lyrical about the issue at hand and offer an insider’s look at the behind-the-scenes workings of Hollywood, fashion, and society. Indeed. Recently, I attended a lovely, exclusive dinner at a private home in the hills in honor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s charismatic musical director, Gustavo Dudamel. A perk of the job. A string quartet played some music for the assembled crème de la crème of the city’s “culturati” set. Krug provided the bubbling refreshments. The guests, dressed in appropriately sparkling attire, bantered and kvelled, privately, amongst themselves. So I felt bad when, between the exquisite courses of osetra caviar and wild striped bass with black truffles and after the intimate toasts, I got up and stuck my phone in Gustavo’s face for an Instagram moment. He didn’t seem to mind too much, of course. He knew it was my duty as a journalist of the moment. And in the moment. Even if I may not be asked again next year. #cestlavie @LAPhil @gustavodudamel Cheers!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

all i want for christmas…

Ninety years ago, with a simple 16-page booklet intended as a holiday greeting card for its best customers, Neiman Marcus launched what for some marks the official start of the holiday shopping season. Landing on my desk earlier this season, the annual Christmas Book’s milestone issue logs more than 700 highly curated items over 300 pages. If I’m being honest though, my childhood dreams were more likely launched from the pages of the Sears holiday Wishbook rather than any luxury retail offering. The voluminous 600-plus-page catalog fueled so many hopes, each tucked just past the robes, appliances, packaged foods, and walletgifting suggestions for Dad. The back of the book featured the highly coveted annual toy section, which quickly became dog-eared by myself and my siblings, each day dreaming about what could possibly be found under the tree that year. It was pure magic! While my fantasy purchases today are slightly more sophisticated than that old Easy-Bake Oven or pair of

38  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

click-clackers, none match the most expensive Neiman Marcus Fantasy Gift of the year, a $1.5 million Cobalt Valkyrie-X private jet in rose gold designed by David Loury and debuting in 2017. Perhaps they have a corporate heart of (rose) gold, as evidenced by the $200,000 that will be donated to the Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation for each aircraft sold. The foundation, a fabulously impactful program, focuses on bringing enriching art experiences to local youth across the country. Los Angeles Confidential and our sister magazines across the country share this commitment to our local communities by supporting—quite literally—hundreds of philanthropic causes each year. Activating our company’s mission to connect, celebrate, and captivate with consciousness, GreenGale Publishing has developed a national fundraising program that has already contributed more than $250,000 to worthy local charities. On a personal note, and following the most unusual election year in recent memory, I do have one very specific holiday wish of my own this

season: By the time this issue is released, Los Angeles residents will have already voted on the $1.2 billion ballot measure HHH, a general obligation bond intended to build more than 10,000 supportive housing units for those affected by homelessness. These much-needed specialized developments and temporary shelters include on-site services such as case managers, physical and mental health care support, and job training. Paid for by property taxes and at an average of just $30 per year per homeowner, I do hope Santa was listening and checked his list twice. I’d hate to find coal in my stocking when it comes to an issue so important to the health and well being of our local communities. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season and start to the new year. Happy shopping!

To acknowledge this long-standing relationship with the film industry, Hamilton Watch Company recognizes and honors the creative innovators behind these cinematic experiences with an annual awards ceremony. Tell us about fusing high fashion and high performance in your line, Mission Statement. “Women are busier than ever. They want the ability to go from exercising straight into their day, whether it’s business meetings, dropping the kids at school, running errands—whatever that is for their lives. I couldn’t find something that served me in all of those facets, so I designed it!” You saw a void in the market. “Indeed. I don’t feel like anyone has hit the mark where highperformance wear has seamlessly met high fashion. When you go out you don’t want to actually look like you’re in a tennis dress. Only when you look at it closer do you realize that the fabrics are actually a technical-performance fabric.” What inspired the fabrics you used? “I wanted to find aesthetically pleasing, world-class, engineered performance materials specifically with a high-fashion look and hand. I also wanted to find fabrics that provided varying levels of warmth or that could keep you cool— materials that protect you from the elements.” What has the process been like from inception to final product? “It’s been an incredible learning curve, but it’s also interesting how it parallels movies in the creation of an idea and taking it all the way to a finished product. It takes a village to actualize a creative endeavor!” missionstatement.com

Get Swank-y: The two-time Oscar winner, here wearing Mission Statement’s Triple Back bra ($185) and Continental Grip capri pants ($165), says her favorite items from the line include the Cloud layering pieces in cashmere, the Center Court dress, and the Passion jacket (“It’s a versatile piece that goes with everything and provides a chic element to any outfit,” she notes).

HOTELS CALIFORNIA THE CITY’S TOP RESTAURANTS CHECK IN! BY RAMONA SAVISS

LA’s ever-evolving food scene takes another sharp turn as new fine-dining arrivals find their homes in... drum roll... hotels. When Downtown’s beloved Alma shuttered last year, it wasn’t long until it resurfaced at WeHo’s hipster mainstay, the Standard (standard hollywood.com). Following a six-month pop-up, restaurateur Ashleigh Parsons and chef Art Taymor have not only opened a permanent restaurant but taken over the hotel’s entire F&B program—including poolside dining and, naturally, room service. The best part? “Having [more] buying power and sourcing ingredients to support small farms and businesses,” says Taymor. In Hollywood, at the sleek new Dream hotel (dreamhotels .com/hollywood), TAO Group is planning a major, LA-style

coup with the opening of numerous nightlife concepts in addition to celeb-loved TAO restaurant and an expansion of popular Beauty & Essex (both hailing from NYC and Vegas). And elevating fine dining into the star-flecked stratosphere, culinary master Jean-Georges Vongerichten makes his much-awaited LA debut at the new, Beverly Hilton–adjacent Waldorf Astoria (waldorf astoriabeverlyhills.com) with a signature restaurant plus rooftoppoolside offerings. Like Taymor, the globally renowned chef is looking forward to the SoCal hotel life. “I will utilize the area’s local organic treasures and support independent purveyors to craft a menu that highlights the finest flavors of the West Coast,” he says. Now the real question: Can we request late check out?

WE BREAK THE DAWN JUMP-START YOUR MORNING IN STYLE WITH DAYBREA ER, THE PRE-WORK DANCE PARTY WITH A HEALTHCONSCIOUS TWIST. BY CHUCK ANSBACHER

64  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

Picture it: The beat is thumping, the dance floor is packed, you’re sweating, smiling, euphoric as the sun starts to rise. It’s early morning, but you’re not at the tail end of an exhausting all-nighter— you’re kicking your day off with an epic, pre-work, thousandperson dance party. This is Daybreaker, the wellness-meetsnightlife love child of

entrepreneur best friends Radha Agrawal and Matthew Brimer, who are turning dance culture on its head in cities across the globe. Started in New York in 2013 and now in 15 cities and counting, Daybreaker is a completely sober experience meant to bring people together and get that blood pumping. It starts with

an hour of deep house yoga followed by a two-hour immersive, full-on rave. The format is the only constant. “Our goal is to always find new, mischievous ways to wow our communities and inspire them to wake up and dance,” says Agrawal. “If it’s the same place over and over again it gets boring.” In LA, that means

switching between nightclub spaces like Ohm (ohmnightclubla .com) in Hollywood and a Hornblower (hornblower.com) boat party out of Marina Del Rey. “Our LA market is our best-looking, and very athletic,” says Agrawal. “I’ve been beyond impressed and inspired by the unbelievable community here.” Naturally. daybreaker.com

And the sweet LA takeover doesn’t stop there. “We will have a lab at a separate location, where you can organize a pastry class,” says Holder Raberin, offering sweet-toothed Angelenos a chance to learn how to make bona fide French macarons from the Ladurée pros themselves. A LION IN WINTER JUST IN TIME FOR AWARDS SEASON, DEV PATEL COMES ROARING BACK WITH ANOTHER HOLLYWOOD WINNER. BY SCOTT HUVER

Actor’s pride: “This movie allowed me to flex certain muscles, and feel certain things, and be shot a certain way,” says British-Indian screen star Dev Patel of his “nourishing” role in Lion, the film adaptation of the best-selling memoir A Long Way Home.

“THE SCRIPT FOR LION WAS SO SPECIAL. I HAVEN’T BEEN MOVED TO TEARS READING ANYTHING IN A LONG TIME.”— DEV PATEL 68

LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

“For a young actor like myself, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime role,” actor Dev Patel says of Lion, the film adaptation of Saroo Brierley’s memoir, A Long Way Home, which relates how as a child in India an unintended train trip resulted in Brierley’s 1,000mile separation from his family, eventual adoption by an Australian couple, and, 25 years later, the guilt-driven search for his birth mother by piecing together meager clues and sparse memories of his childhood. Directed by Garth Davis and released by The Weinstein Company, Lion was a sensation at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Patel earning particularly rave reviews. “I’m all the more proud of this because I had to really fight for it,” says the 26-year-old actor, noting that his Slumdog Millionaire cachet worked against him. Patel not only built up his physique, mastered an Australian accent, visited Indian orphanages, and wrote in-character diaries, he also spent time bonding with the real Brierley, “the epitome of a survivor,” he says. The opportunity, Patel adds, “was something that I knew would be incredibly nourishing.” It also landed him on the immediate short list for major awards contention. “Being a young BritishAsian actor, I’m finally given a piece of material that I can really run with,” he admits. “The whole experience made me feel really humbled coming away from it.”

Mixografia’s legendary print collaborations with easel-loads of eminent artists have been displayed at LACMA, New York’s MoMA, Paris’s Musée d’Art Moderne… Now, with the opening of its atelier-adjacent gallery, it’s finally showing a curated selection of its own 700 works at home. The printer and publisher is named after a spectacular printing method, mixografía, whereby a mostly two-dimensional artwork is molded in rubber, its imprint transferred to a copper printing plate, and its texture and relief then printed simultaneously with oil-based ink onto heavy, handmade cotton paper. Invented by Luis Remba, who with his wife, Lea, was the proprietor

The results are prints with remarkable detail in relief, texture, and volume. Every fold and crinkle in the plastic-bag installations from LA-based artist Analia Saban—whose latest series, “Paper or Plastic?” is featured at the gallery until January 14, 2017—are rendered in exact measure on paper. GAME CHANGER IN HER LATEST BOOK, ART INSIDER BARBARA GUGGENHEIM GOES BEHIND THE VELVET EASEL OF THE OFTEN CLIQUEY AND CUTTHROAT ART WORLD. BY SAMANTHA YANKS

In your new book, Art World: The New Rules of the Game (Marmont Lane; $30), you demystify the buying and selling of art. How is art acquisition different today? In the past, collecting was the realm of the very few. If, for example, a Monet came onto the market, everyone knew who the likely suspects were who could buy it. Today, the market is global, with buyers from all over the world—China, South America, and Russia—and they are all highly active.

72

What are your strategies for collecting? As an advisor, I feel that I’m a combination art historian, financial analyst, and psychologist. It’s fun when a client distinguishes their collections from others by their choices. I have a client whose life as a commodities trader is hectic. He collects Ellsworth Kelly and Donald Judd to give him the serenity he needs at home. Which emerging artists are you eyeing now? The heat is on an LA artist, Jonas Wood, whose

realist paintings have pushed the limits of what other realist painters have done before. The art world is a closed universe. How does one gain entrée? Working with an advisor shortcuts the process. Dealers know the most active advisors and know that they’re serious about building clients’ collections. Everyone wants to be part of that—particularly dealers! UNDER THE SURFACE ESCADA FOLDS FOUR DECADES OF HERITAGE INTO A MODERN RESORT COLLECTION SHIMMERING IN SHADES OF WATER, SUN, AND SAND.

BY BETSY F. PERRY

While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers—while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s

Moments in the sun (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): For its 2017 resort collection, Escada modeled a yellow frock after Kim Basinger’s 1998 Oscar dress; the collection also includes coats and gowns in iridescent fabrics as well as kitten heels and metallic slides.

aquatic series). Key pieces include pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eyepopping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. For Wingate, it amounts to a simple design credo: “Be relevant.” 9502 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310-285-0330; escada.com

STYLE DEBUT

A STAR IS REBORN ON THE EVE OF ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY, RALPH LAUREN GOES EXCLUSIVE-CHIC WITH AN EXPANDED RODEO DRIVE FLAGSHIP.

Welcome to Ralph Lauren’s world: The newly renovated Bev Hills boutique houses the Fall/Winter collection’s Americana standouts, a handbag salon that offers state-of-the-art customization technology (BELOW), and a floor dedicated to Ralph Lauren Home (RIGHT).

Nobody does true Americana quite like Ralph Lauren: classic, glamorous-yet-preppy style infused with a touch of rugged romance and influences from the American west. Now, for all that looking back, the designer has propelled himself into the future with a newly renovated Beverly Hills flagship and a fall collection leading the fashion world’s of-the-moment runway-to-retail ideology. The boutique, which sits across from the site of Lauren’s first-ever LA shop, boasts 22,000 square feet of West Coast chic: oversized windows, reclaimed-wood beams, antique fireplaces, all mixed with pieces from the home collection. Better yet? Shoppers can visit the brand-new handbag salon, the only one of its kind, to create, customize, and monogram their very own Ricky, Tiffin, or Drawstring bag using RFID (radio frequency identification) imaging technology. No need to worry about duplicates: More than 1 million different customizations exist. Visitors will also be able to shop the western-whimsical Fall/Winter collection, which was presented at a celeb-flocked (Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley, Jessica Alba, Julianne Moore...) Fashion Week show: ombre western shirts, motorcycle jackets, swoon-worthy jewel-toned dresses. And as the brand celebrates 50 years, in 2017, industry insiders look forward to another halfcentury of old, of new—of Ralph. 444 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-281-7200; ralphlauren.com

Insta-inspirations: Personal tragedy bore uplift for good hYOUman designer and philanthropist Brett Novek (ABOVE), as seen in his line’s motivational graphic tees and sweaters ($40–$98), which are sold at Equinox, Anthropologie.com, and Nordstrom.com, among other premier outlets. Throughout December, good hYOUman’s partnership with actress Italia Ricci (HERE) will benefit Stand Up to Cancer.

In a city teeming with pretty people, former actor/model and current hottie Brett Novek stands out. When the one-time soap opera player’s father died, the Fort Lauderdale-reared twenty-something had an epiphany. “That immediately changed my perspective,” says Novek, now 32. “I discovered ‘empathy’ and became much more positive.” Novek, who as a teen had helped his dad with his manufacturing business, tapped into his own latent entrepreneurial spirit. “I could never find a T-shirt I liked, so I decided to make them myself,” he says. With just $1,000 and some garment dye, he started printing on plain tees in the bathroom of his Studio City apartment. “It was one year of no sleep and just a few buys,” he remembers of his baby fashion brand, good hYOUman. The perseverance paid off. At his first trade show, the budding biz whiz worked the room and sold $13,500 worth of shirts “in 30 seconds.” Three days later, he had $30,000 worth of orders. Today, four years after that breakthrough, with a staff of 14 making 20,000 garments a month in 100 styles, Novek produces his made-in-SoCal activewear out of his Vernon HQ. And in the spirit of that seminal epiphany, he now gives back by collaborating with a variety of charities, donating a portion of his proceeds on select items. This month, good hYOUman partners with Chasing Life actress Italia Ricci to benefit Stand Up to Cancer. What’s next for the do-gooder darling, whose athleisure is sold in more than 1,000 specialty boutiques worldwide? “Good hYOUman will forever be part of me. Sky’s the limit.” goodhyouman.com

Globetrotters, rejoice: Marrying German engineering with French chic, Rimowa and Moncler’s latest luggage collab (HERE AND TOP LEFT, $1,960) proves worthy of Moncler swear-bys like Brigitte Bardot (ABOVE) and Jackie O. (LEFT).

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MONCLER

If Rimowa is synonymous with invincible hard-case luggage, and Moncler with impossibly chic puffer coats, then any collaboration between the two is destined for must-have status. The German-based luggage company and the French sport apparel label’s first collaboration came about in 2012, and the two are teaming up once again to introduce the Multiwheel Topas Stealth collection, combining Moncler’s sleek high-fashion style with Rimowa’s high-tech innovation. The collection boasts a lightweight gray aluminum exterior (with Rimowa’s signature grooves, of course) in three different sizes, each with a quilted camouflage fabric developed by Moncler specifically for the collection. Even better, the silenced Multiwheel gliding system, in addition to optimal functionality and maneuverability, makes for quiet traveling across any terminal or tarmac. And with accessories like footwear bags and wash bags—perfect for all of those personal possessions and TSA-approved liquids—it’s the ultimate set of luggage to get you from Aspen to the Costa Smeralda and back again. For the Black Orchid Lalique Edition, Tom Ford called on the famed crystal house to create a finely fluted, Art Deco black crystal bottle. GET DOWN UNDER FROM VENICE TO DOWNTOWN, L.A.’S FASHION SCENE IS TAKING ON A DECIDELY AUSSIE SHEEN. BY KATHRYN ROMEYN

“IT’S THAT EFFORTLESSLY COOL AUSTRALIAN AESTHETIC THAT TRANSLATES SO WELL FASHION ATTITUDE.” –abdoulaye

“There’s such a synergy between the culture and lifestyle of Australia and LA,” says BNKR (fashion bunker.com) CEO Dean Flintoft, who chose a 6,800square-foot space downtown for the Adelaide-based fashion collective’s first non-domestic flagship. Opened in April, it stocks an incredible range of homegrown labels, including C/MEO Collective, The Fifth Label, Keepsake, and

Jaggar. But the sizable outpost is far from the only sign of a Down Under takeover. Australian mega-retailer Cotton On (cottonon.com) is replicating all over Greater LA, with several new shops and a massively expanded Glendale location. “Our heritage is deeply rooted in denim, which resonates with LA style,” explains USA brand manager Abdoulaye Diaw. “It’s that effortlessly

LET’S HAVE A PARADE! MACY’S CELEBRATES ITS 90TH THANKSGIVING DAY SPECTACLE WITH A FANCY RIZZOLI TOME AND IN-STORE EVENTS FROM COAST TO COAST. BY JILL SIERACKI

When the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way down New York’s Central Park West and Sixth Avenue on November 24, the celebration is set to be even more exuberant than usual to mark the 90th edition this year. “We like to make sure nothing is duplicated— we’re giving people a full breadth of entertainment from the moment the turkey crosses the starting line to the time Santa

officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures

the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

Across the country, in-store celebratory events and products will be unveiled—and a new app even allows users to create their own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “This is a milestone for Macy’s, but I think it’s a milestone for every fan we have across the country,” says Kule. “This is not a New York parade; this is America’s parade.” 750 W. 7th St., LA, 213-6289311; macys.com

SAVING FACE

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix—for the appropriate patients, of course. “It’s a great product in the right circumstance, but the patient selection has to be correct,” says Dr. Stephen C. Adler, a Miami-based facial plastic surgeon. “It’s best in younger patients between 30 and 45 [who have] some fullness under the chin but otherwise good skin texture and tension.” “It also takes two or three sessions, and there is a recovery time of a few weeks in between,” adds Adler. Whatever it takes to unearth your true face… From $1,300; mykybella.com. “I like to feel that I can always be counted on,” says otherworldly star Zoe Saldana, here swathed in a couture confection by designer Nicolas Jebran. “I have to prove myself as a woman—my durability, my stamina. So I have to fight harder.”

ZOE

Out of This World OUTER SPACE ASS KICKER ZOE SALDANA GOES FOR SERIOUS HOLLYWOOD GOLD IN BEN AFFLECK’S LIVE BY NIGHT. By Scott Huver Photography by Omar Cruz

Zoe Saldana admits that, as an actress whose film career has spanned multiple galaxies and far-reaching timelines, she had a tough time wrapping her head around a very unexpected request from Ben Affleck. After playing the blue-skinned alien Neytiri in James Cameron’s eye-popping Avatar, the green-skinned warrior woman Gamora in Marvel’s crowd-pleasing Guardians of the Galaxy, and the mini-skirted 23rdcentury Starfleet officer Uhura in the warp speed–paced Star Trek reboots, Saldana was asked by actor/ writer/director Affleck if she’d like to travel back to the Prohibition Era for the crime-noir Live by Night, which he was adapting from author Dennis Lehane’s bestseller. “I would have never considered gangster movies,” laughs Saldana, admitting no affinity for the genre. But Affleck was earnest in his opinion that she would make an ideal Graciella, the Cuban revolutionary engaged in a passionate crusade as well as an equally torrid romance with Affleck’s rum-running mobster character. “I was like, ‘Me? It’s a period piece—I do more future stuff.’ And then I just told myself, ‘Why not just work with Ben Affleck? Why not just play an Afro-Cuban that sells molasses to make rum in the 1920s in Florida?’ Like, ‘Why not do that?’” “She was always my first choice,” confirms Affleck, who was unconcerned about any otherworldly baggage. “The fact that she had done contemporary movies and movies set in the future didn’t deter me. Her skill is evident in all her work, and what I was most moved by in her was the authenticity of her humanity. I don’t know what I would have done had she said no.” Saldana embraced her “why nots,” impressed with how Affleck’s acting background made him an openminded collaborator. “He just has a great deal of empathy for what we go through as actors, so his dynamic on a set is much friendlier, much more relaxed, more leveled,” she recalls. “Every day, every scene, every conversation I would have with Ben, I just felt really hooked. Like, ‘Okay, whatever input I’m adding, he’s really considering it.’” At first glance, Graciella had some of the steel and fire of Saldana’s more futuristic creations but also inspired deeper consideration for the actress, who boasts a diverse heritage (Dominican, Puerto Rican) and a peripatetic upbringing in New Jersey, the Dominican Republic, and Queens, New York. “Trying to imagine that [1920s] America, how I would have been in that America, how I would have felt about that America, and how that America would have felt about me, I’m very happy that I did this intellectual pilgrimage,” she says.

kickers and their far-flung worldviews: “I like thinking that if we aim for being in a better place, for doing bigger things, that we will eventually get there,” she says. She’ll re-team with Cameron for what she’s convinced will be equally epic and groundbreaking Avatar sequels, the plots of which he’s tantalizingly laid out for her over various dinners. “I’m loving the journey that he has set out for us as characters,” she says. “It’s only going to be greater, bigger, better. He raised the bar really high, and he’s going to meet his own [standard]—he’s going to match it or beat it. I just believe in him so much.” Gratified by the success of Star Trek Beyond in that singular space franchise’s fiftieth anniversary year, she treasured the input she received by Uhura’s originator, Nichelle Nichols. “She said, ‘Just go for it. Just do your thing. Make her modern. Make her strong. Be Uhura. Don’t be afraid of her.’ She goes, ‘I’m not Uhura—that role is on the paper. Of course I added everything that I wanted it to be at that time, what I wanted women to be.’ And that was the most amazing validation, ever.” For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, she credits writer-director James Gunn for including an atypically fleshed-out dynamic between the female characters Gamora, a reformed assassin, and her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan). Gunn says he values the camaraderie he’s shared with Saldana—“my sister forever”— through both films. “I knew from the minute I first met Zoe that she was an extremely strong person,” he explains. “But I don’t think I expected her to be such a nerd! More than any other cast member, she enjoys the magic of science fiction that Guardians brings, and geeks out every time I show her a new bit of visual effects. I love those moments.” “Now I am into being a woman in a different way,” she says after her string of empowered roles. “I react very negatively to feeling vulnerable or having others think that I’m in a vulnerable position. So I’m listening to those fears, and I’m addressing them by playing roles that make me feel more vulnerable. I’m embracing that femininity, that strength, that I used to mistake for weakness.” She admits that when she became a mother—and especially the mother of twins (she and her husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, are parents to two-year-old twin sons,

Bowie and Cy)—she expected the doubleddown demands of parenthood to sap her vitality. She soon proved herself wrong. “I would think it would slow me down, and it hasn’t,” she beams. “I have all this energy now for so many things that I want to do.” “It’s fantastic having twins,” she adds. “This is something that we certainly didn’t plan for. We wanted to start a family, but being blessed with a two-in-one shot is great. I grew up in a family of women. Now I have these three gentlemen who I’m living with, and who are just Mowglis: savages and super playful and spontaneous. I’m encouraged to keep up. I drank the Kool-Aid, and I love it!” Both Saldana and Perego enjoy creative, allimmersive careers that frequently require extensive travel and long absences from home, but her voice grows undeniably tranquil as she reflects on the teamwork they employ to make sure every member of the family is satisfied. “We plan everything together—that way nobody feels slighted,” she says, glowingly describing the careful, sometimes self-sacrificing schedule-building they employ. “We’re unconditional with each other: unconditionally supportive of each other’s careers, and professions, and desires, and goals. But we can only be this by having absolute transparency. When we hit a road block, then we take the time to figure how we’re going to move that block and keep moving on down the road.” It’s an ethic she hopes reflects in her professional life as well. “One thing that I’ve always known about myself is that I can be trusted to solve a problem, that I can be counted on,” she says. “And in order for me to be in that position, I have to prove myself as a woman— my durability, my stamina: ‘Can I remain standing after I go through the same kind of challenge as a male?’ So you have to fight harder. I always loved owning that aptitude— acquiring it, and having it, and having others acknowledge it and notice it.” She’s hoping her two little rampaging Mowglis at home notice it, too. “By the time they’re old enough and they’re being asked ‘What does your mom do?’ I want to give them ample options of what they can say,” she says. “As opposed to just, ‘My mom’s an actress.’’’ And then she offers an alternative description, punctuated by laughter, but still certainly apt: “‘She’s a kick-ass alien woman!’”

“She works hard and doesn’t want to stop until she achieves something she feels is truthful,” says Affleck, pointing to her innate “great bullshit detector. Zoe isn’t going to let a false note pass unchallenged. She pushed me to make her character the truest it could be—and the most interesting.” The energy that fuels that work ethic is on display in conversation with Saldana on virtually any subject: There’s a charge in the air as rapid-fire sentences fairly crackling with electric thought flow forth, punctuated with graceful, emphatic gestures and rich, ringing laughter. That she sees herself as a traveler on various journeys comes through loud and clear—for instance, she has a crystalline notion as to just why she ended up playing an array of action-oriented future-women. “Growing up, I didn’t have the kind of role models that I needed, that I wanted,” she says. Aliens’ Ellen Ripley and The Terminator’s Sarah Connor were embraced, of course; running out of female examples, she aspired to heroics once reserved primarily for male action stars. “I just thought, ‘Oh my God, they’re doing such amazing, amazing things— I want to do that!’” She rebelled against the types of all-too-typical roles she was expected to audition for. “It was hard for me in my 20s to accept parts where I was The Girlfriend,” she admits, recalling coming home from her agency with armloads of new scripts, eager to discover a choice part. “And then you open that page, usually page 20, and it says, ‘In comes so-andso: Hot. Sexy. Legs for days.’ And you’re like, ‘Aw, why not just let her open her mouth first, and then we’ll judge her based on what she’s saying?’ I remember feeling disheartened, and kind of going, ‘I can’t do this.’” Her background in dance opened the door to physical performance opportunities in increasingly fantastical storylines. “Space became this place that, yeah, I’m someone’s girlfriend, but I’m also the daughter of the king, or the queen of this tribe,” she says. “And we’re fighting to save this environment. That’s a multi-dimensional character, you know? So sometimes space provided a way to better roles for me. And I love action and science fiction… I was getting things out of my system. It’s what I was truly, truly enjoying.” And she still adores her space-faring ass

Snap, dazzle, pop! Meet the city’s post-millennial posse of mega-stars who are making social media—and L.A.— the scenes to be seen in.

ANYONE CAN RACK UP a ton of Instagram followers, but it takes much more for an account to actually make an impact on our culture. Not so surprisingly, given its star-making heritage, Los Angeles is a city full of social media super-talents doing just that—from the DJ empowering women to rock the arts to the chefs mixing food porn with a pinch of politics. Here, these omnipresent—if oddly elusive— purveyors of current cool take us behind the scenes of their feeds... and to the LA spots they deem worthy of a double click.

“I’ve learned from other artists to stick to the art on Instagram and keep personal political views aside,” says LA artist Retna (left), who stacks his 120K-follower feed with photos of his paintings and murals from all over town.

RETNA | ART @ironeyeretna

When Retna first started painting in the mid-’90s—back in the days of dial-up—he couldn’t have imagined how the then-nonexistent world of social media would impact his career. His murals, after all, have become some of the most popular selfie backdrops on Instagram today, both in LA and internationally. “Instagram allows me to reach more viewers and engage with them on a personal level,” says the artist, 37, who once gave his phone number to one of his 120K followers. (Seriously.) He’s been featured in over 30 exhibitions, and has collaborated with everyone from Louis Vuitton to Justin Bieber. Most Instagrammed mural: Right now, it’s the one I have on Craig’s restaurant (craigs.la) in West Hollywood. The one at the West Hollywood library [is popular], too. Artists I follow: @santedorazioofficial, @_revok_, @saner_edgar, @nunca.art. Good vibes only: I’ve learned from other artists to stick to the art on Instagram and keep personal political views aside. I’m more enticed by stuff that uplifts my spirit, so why would I want to promote negativity on my feed? Fraud alert: On Instagram, I get to be inspired by what other artists are doing and see people who are inspired by my work... and then I also see copies of my work! That’s something that happens to a lot of artists now. Inspired by: I’m a big fan of architecture, and one of my favorite buildings has always been The Scottish Rite Masonic Temple on Wilshire Boulevard. Favorite ’hood: My studio’s in Downtown and it’s interesting to be there... I just did a mural at The Row, and you should definitely see Cleon Peterson’s mural [in the Downtown Arts District]. Dinner pick: I like a good steak over at Morel’s (morelslv.com) at The Grove! For more on Retna’s best of LA, go to la-confidential-magazine.com.

TARA MAXEY AND MATT POLEY | FOOD @heirloomla @ingredients4heirloomla @yolkandflour

Artisanal catering company Heirloom LA makes some of the most photogenic food in the city—it’s best known for the “Lasagna Cupcake,” which became Insta-bait (and a go-to for entertainment biz parties) after appearing in the Wall Street Journal in 2011. But what makes Heirloom’s Instagram feed truly special is that it goes beyond food porn. “I’m aware that my posts about farmers or the drought don’t get nearly as many likes as a beautiful dessert, but we have a responsibility to talk about food politics,” says Tara Maxey, 46, who co-founded Heirloom with 32-year-old chef Matt Poley and now maintains its 57K-follower Instagram account. “There’s such a story to tell.” Strength in numbers: We have three accounts—@heirloomla is the main one, @ingredients4heirloomla showcases local farmers, and @yolkandflour features all the incredible places Matt and I go to eat. Most popular post: Our crostini stations! They’re basically just meat, cheese, vegetables, and fruit, but Matt approaches them like a floral arrangement and people flip out over them. Social scandal: I was visiting a goat farm and saw a mother goat giving birth, so I filmed it and put it on Instagram. People freaked out! I’m sure I lost a lot of followers for that. Foodies to follow: @smfms [Santa Monica Farmer’s Markets], @chefori, @proofbakeryla, @valleybrinkroad. Most Instagrammable eatery: Ones that have natural light! In this age you’ve got to think about that when designing your restaurant. Grand Central Market (grandcentralmarket.com) is a lot of fun. There are so many places [to shoot] in there. Buzzy cocktails: We live right by Sonny’s Hideaway (sonnys hideaway.com), and bartender Jesse Phillips is always making these seasonal punches that are fabulous. JESSE MARGOLIS | COMMENTARY @overheardla

While shopping at health food store Erewhon in 2015, Jesse Margolis overheard two women having an only-inLA conversation—one that veered from egg-freezing to pit bulls. He wrote down their best quotes, posted them on his personal Instagram account, and was urged by his friends to start a spin-off feed. Fast forward a year, and each day Margolis now receives around 100 submissions of quippy conversational snippets for the official Overheard LA account, which is nearing 300K followers. (He chooses not to reveal his face or age to maintain anonymity.) “I think of each post as a six-second sitcom written by the city itself,” says Margolis, an LA native who works in documentary development.

Only in LA: People have done “overheard” stuff as long as there have been newspapers, but I think Los Angeles is particularly funny in terms of the way we exercise, the way we date, the things we covet. Most popular post: It read: “He’s 31, but, like, North Carolina 31. Like, two kids and a mortgage. Thirty-one-year-old dudes in Los Angeles are just learning how to cook a fucking chicken.” Satirists to follow: @brooklyn cartoons, @textsfromyourexistentialist, @theonion. “Overheard” hotspots: I get a lot of submissions from Alfred Coffee, Sugarfish, and markets like Erewhon and Whole Foods. And some of the best ones come from LACMA. Old-school LA: My favorite sushi restaurant is Shunji (shunji-ns.com) on Pico and Barrington. He was a chef from Nobu back in the ’80s and ’90s when my parents used to eat there. Best people watching: Abbot Kinney. It’s astonishing [that] this street that used to be full of hippies is now all Norwegian tourists eating olive-oil ice cream. LAUREN “KITTENS” ABEDINI | MUSIC @iamkittens

Kittens’ big break came when she was a brand-new DJ playing pool parties at Drai’s in Hollywood, where she was discovered and shipped off on tour with rapper Kid Cudi. Two years later, she counts Usher and A-Trak as mentors, has 38K Instagram followers, and is known for a sound that’s far less cuddly than her moniker suggests. “If somebody didn’t know who was playing they’d probably think I was a dude, because I like music that’s a little more masculine... everything has a gritty, dark, intense vibe,” says the 27-year-old musician, who also runs a DJ school for women.

Girl power: I get a lot of girls messaging me [on Instagram] to thank me for being a role model. I’m very vocal about empowering young women in the arts, because I know what it’s like to want to do something but not have anyone to identify with. The edit: I only post a few types of things on Instagram: me DJ-ing at shows, beauty stuff, and my three cats, because they’re ridiculously cute. Favorite comment: I’m openly gay, and people tell me I’ve inspired them to come out and be comfortable with themselves. That always strikes a chord with me. Musicians I follow: @asaprocky, @felicia thegoat, @future, @annalunoe. #OOTD style tip: Yonada on Melrose (yonada26.com) has every cool band T-shirt you could imagine. Digital detox: I love to get a coffee and go to Echo Park Lake to decompress. DJ hangouts: Low End Theory (lowendtheory club.com) is a huge part of the LA scene, and there’s a spot in Downtown called The Lash (thelashsocial.com) that has all kinds of very specific parties—like, cyber-tropical bass night! from top: LA-based menswear fashion icon Eric Rutherford, as seen at a W magazine party celebrating new voices in photography; “Letting go is always hard to do,” says Rutherford of closet clean-outs, and adds an apt hashtag: “#shoeporn.”

ERIC RUTHERFORD | FASHION @mr.rutherford

Three years ago, digital style guru Eric Rutherford was working as an event planner for brands like Gucci and Levi’s; Instagram was just something he dabbled in for kicks. But after being scouted by a modeling agent IRL, his career took a sharp turn—now a CFDA ambassador, he’s posing for W magazine, designing his own sweater line, and developing an online TV show based on his life. “I’m older than some of the people I’m doing this with, but my level of joy and curiosity is sometimes bigger than the guys half my age,” says Rutherford, 49. “That’s kind of my attitude with this—every day, just waking up and going for it.” My Insta-M.O.: For me, Instagram is a way to share, to listen, and to understand people. I was a lonely kid, and to have something like this where I can connect to someone in London, Des Moines, Bangladesh... That’s one of the best aspects of this. Handling haters: Sometimes people jump on the page and are like, “Listen, Grandpa, hang it up.” Truth be told, it affects you. But I’ve learned to take both good and bad

comments with a grain of salt. Most popular posts: I can post the most beautiful editorial, but the ones people like the most are the random selfies. Fashion folks to follow: @edward_enninful, @georgecortina, @nickwooster... and I’ll even check in on @kyliejenner. Snap-worthy style: You can always find fantastic vintage Rolexes at Wanna Buy A Watch (wannabuyawatch.com) or fun, cool menswear at Opening Ceremony (openingceremony.com). For an LA night to remember: I would walk on the beach in Venice as the sun sets with someone that makes me smile—then, go to Norm’s diner (normsrestaurants.com)! PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MARQUÉS DE RISCAL

BY MURAT OZTASKIN

In the medieval village of Elciego, Spain, in the rolling hills of Rioja, one structure rises above the rest. Designed by LA-based architect Frank Gehry, the 10-year-old Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a five-star, 43-room luxury property adjacent to the namesake, 159-year-old winery, augments its surroundings—green vineyards, ochre soil, sandstone buildings—by positioning itself as the focal point: the centerpiece of Marqués de Riscal’s “city of wine,” which in addition to the 1 million-square-foot winery includes a spa and Michelin-starred restaurant. To pay tribute to the Pritzker Prize–winning architect and the hotel’s decade mark, Marqués de Riscal has released a special edition: the Frank Gehry Reserve Selection 2012 Vintage. Made from the tempranillo grapes native to the region, the 2012 vintage is even housed in Gehry-approved bottles: The signed bottle art is the Canadian-born Angeleno’s first sketch for the hotel. In synergetic service, many of the 5,000 bottles that were released were auctionbound large-format varieties to benefit Turnaround Arts: California, an education initiative that supports high-need schools around the state. “The more you see of the process of winemaking, the more you understand there’s a real artistry to it,” says Gehry, 87. “With good winemakers, [as with] good architects, there’s attention to materials and craftsmanship, a dedication to tradition, and also a pursuit of innovation.” Happily at home, in both cases, in the hills above Elciego… and in the wine cellars of Hollywood. marquesderiscal.com

After the successful launches of Atelier Swarovski jewelry and accessories, Swarovski has added another beautiful branch to its more than 120-year-old empire with the debut of Atelier Swarovski Home. Says Nadja Swarovski, the company’s head of corporate communications and design services, “We wanted to translate the forward-thinking design DNA and technical expertise within our brand, as well as the energy of the creative talent, into a collection of luxurious and covetable objects.” For the debut, the company collaborated with nine of the world’s leading designers for crystal objects that are remarkable for their artistry and technologically advanced design. Included in the collection is a chessboard combining maps of Manhattan and Milan designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, as well as a series of sculptural candle holders from Kim Thomé. Most noteworthy in the collection is the “Crista” centerpiece by the late architect Zaha Hadid. It utilizes Swarovski’s groundbreaking Wave Cut technique, which “combines cutting-edge computer technology with mechanical engineering to cut curved forms in crystal,” says Swarovski. “The wave cutting technique took 10 years to develop, and only two people in the world are able to skillfully use the machine,” she adds. “We were all so heartbroken by Zaha Hadid’s passing, but it seems fitting that she was the first person to use this new technology with one of the final pieces she produced.” atelierswarovski.com

BOXING DAY ’TIS THE SEASON TO GET GIVING WITH HAUTE NEW LOCALLY MADE GIFT BOXES. BY KATHRYN ROMEYN

It’s a wrap! LA’s smart set ups the holiday ante with custom, H’wood-worthy gift boxes, including chic offerings from Valleybrink Road, such as The Mini Sweet Box with rare artisanal chocolates (here), and a vast selection from Simone LeBlanc, who experiments with dried floral bundles and Japanese-inspired wrapping (below).

For the generous type who finds shopping a chore comes an ageold approach that’s fresher than ever. Eschewing staid gift baskets laden with mass-produced edibles, a handful of LA-based companies are carefully curating artisanal goodies and packing them in elegant, keepsake boxes. “My customers love our storytelling,” says gifting pioneer Simone LeBlanc (simoneleblanc.com), whose vast collection of gift boxes means you can find the perfect mélange for anyone on your list, from the holiday hostess to the first-time parents. “It’s also an incredible thing to be able to support local businesses, American-made products, and be part of this revival of manufacturing,” adds LeBlanc, whose five new-for-the-holidays boxes include mindfully sourced, smileinducing items such as Baltic birch Fredericks & Mae dominoes, limited-edition pencils lacquered with Fender Stratocaster-inspired sunbursts, and ethically sourced crystal geodes. The same conscious, personal approach is taken by LA local Barrett Prendergast of Valleybrink Road (valleybrink road.com), whose boxes are finished with an air plant or artisanal bouquet. A dozenplus new seasonal boxes pack a tantalizing punch courtesy of beautifully packaged, smallproduction Compartés NightCap chocolate whiskey bars, La Boîte vadouvan-flavored popcorn, or artisanal Poppy & Someday skincare. And Boxfox’s (shopboxfox.com) updated collection of prepackaged Eat, Drink, & Be Merry holiday boxes (there’s also a customizable Build a Boxfox option) are shipped with a personalized handwritten note. Being thoughtful has never been chic-er.

“INTERIOR DESIGN HAS A BIT MORE LONGEVITY THAN FASHION—WHICH IS SOMETHING I CAN APPRECIATE.” —erin fetherston

DESIGNING WOMEN L.A. WOMENSWEAR FAVE ERIN FETHERSTON PARTNERS UP FOR A NEW INTERIORS GIG. BY RAMONA SAVISS

This season, Cali-native Erin Fetherston joins forces with interior designer Tammy Price of Westlake Village– based firm Fragments Identity to launch a new home collection. The two met when Fetherston, then bicoastal between LA and New York, was looking to spruce up her WeHo digs.

After collaborating on one home, the design duo teamed up to create an entire line that was inspired by the then-pregnant Fetherston’s need for child-proof interiors and her unwillingness to sacrifice high style. “Tammy was a great partner—she was the only person who didn’t balk

140  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

at me for wanting to do a very white-oriented, neutral color palette in my home,” says Fetherston, 35. Now, the pair debuts their mommy-chic Erin Fetherston x Fragments Identity line of 25 items ranging from baby carriers and hammocks to ottomans and dog beds. “I wanted to

create something that speaks to indoor-outdoor living and has a modern, organic ease to it,” says Fetherston of the collection, which bases many of its pieces around mud cloth, a Malian cotton fabric that’s both natural and naturally durable. “It’s not precious,” says Fetherston of the solution that turned a

personal design problem on its head. “I couldn’t find a childfriendly cocktail table that doesn’t have hard edges and that doesn’t look totally lame—so we created a beautiful mud cloth-upholstered, durable ottoman.” Problem(s) solved. erinfetherston.com

BEDTIME STORY WITH ITS LATEST LAUNCH, ULTRA-LUXE BED BRAND HÄSTENS HAS CLIENTS SLEEPING LIKE SWEDISH ROYALTY.

“WHEN WE LAUNCHED VIVIDUS, WE NEVER INTENDED FOR IT TO BE A BED THAT STOPS EVOLVING.” —jan

Ten years ago, Jack Ryde, the late fourth-generation owner of Swedish bed manufacturer Hästens, set out to create the greatest bed in the world. That sweet dream came true with the company’s blue-checked masterpiece: Vividus. “When we launched Vividus, we never intended for it to be a bed that stops evolving,” says Jan Ryde, Jack’s son and Hästens’ current owner and executive chairman. This fall, the company re-launches its flagship bed, whose construction requires 320 hours of work from four certified craftsmen focused on every detail, from the northern Swedish redwood frame to the hand-sewn layers of

horsehair, cotton, and wool in the customized bodycontouring mattress. The piece is quite literally fit for a king—Hästens was appointed Purveyor to H.M. the King of Sweden in 1952 and has served as official supplier to the Swedish Royal Court ever since—and carries a stately $140,000 price tag. For many, though, getting the world’s greatest sleep every night is worth the price. “My first night in the new Vividus was like rediscovering sleep, which was profound even for me—someone who has grown up with Hästens in my DNA,” says Ryde. “It’s the finest bed we’ve ever made.” hastens.com

SPACE ’HOOD “THERE’S NO MORE EXCITING PLACE ON THE WESTSIDE RIGHT NOW.” —alison girard

On the waterfront: In addition to tech companies and startups, Silicon Beach is attracting an influx of things to do, eat, drink, and see, says Alison Girard (inset left), such as the artisanal sweets and fire-pit patio at Playa Provisions (above). below: For “a tough workout among the super-yachts and barking seals,” Girard grabs a paddleboard and heads to the marina.

“Rent a kayak or paddleboard in the marina for a tough workout among the superyachts and barking seals. The reward? Drinks at SALT (13534 Bali Way, Marina Del Rey, 424-289-8223; pacifica hotels.com) in the recently revamped Hotel MdR.” “In addition to a fire-pit patio and exciting bar, Brooke Williamson’s Playa Provisions (119 Culver Blvd., Playa Del Rey, 310-683-5019; playaprovisions.com) has a coffee house and small batch ice-cream shop. It’s a sweet way to end date night!” “At The Campus, lunch spot The Chicken or the Egg (12150 Millennium Dr., Ste.

It’s beautiful scenery, plus community gardens and a dog park. So peaceful! What more can you ask for?”

Brookfield Residential’s marketing director for Playa Vista, Alison Girard, lived in the up-and-coming nabe for years with her husband and two boys. “There’s probably no more exciting place on the Westside right now,” says Girard, 41, of the combination of beach-chic homes, parks, and shopping and dining options that continue to grow around the influx of tech at The Campus at Playa Vista, home to Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company and where Google is building its SoCal HQ. As the development spills into the bordering nabes of Venice, Marina Del Rey, and Playa Del Rey, Silicon Beach is growing—ever more fabulous. brookfieldresidential.com

LIGHTS, CAMERA... SOUND? WINTER MEANS AWARDS TIME. WHO CARES ABOUT EMMA STONE AND RYAN GOSLING? BY SAM WASSON

Once more, as we begin our descent into awards season, and I find myself looking forward to seeing this year’s slight variation on the tuxedo, and how funny it would be if Julianne Moore or someone was literally wearing Tom Ford—like, the actual person—I naturally reflect on my

152

favorite part of the Oscars. Along with the In Memoriam reel, which offers the rare and wonderful opportunity to see our favorite actors not talking, my favorite part of the show comes toward the shank of the evening, when most home viewers get restless and, as a kind of stalling technique, begin to feign

LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

casual interest in the people around them. I am speaking, of course, of the presentation of Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, two categories I know absolutely nothing about. What I do know, however, is that these expert filmmakers are time and again the Oscars’ most exuberant bunch.

Bounding down from their nosebleeds in the fourth mezzanine, arms thrown over each other’s shoulders, these folks take their moment as if no one’s watching. They aren’t auditioning. By virtue of their trade, they don’t make their speeches with obstreperous egos, or the tendency to emotionally

over-share—only the fraternal good will of a nerdy combat unit on furlough and an obvious love for their industry. I hope the Academy never promotes these heroes to the front of the orchestra. Year after year, I have come to so cherish their long victory march to the stage.
