Broad’s way: Paramount movie queen and Hollywood “scenestar” Marlene Dietrich was the first woman to wear pants in the Beverly Hills Hotel’s Polo Lounge. “You don’t tell this woman she can’t come in,” notes Robert S. Anderson, great-grandson of the hotel’s founder, in his book, The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows: The First 100 Years.

RIDING HIGH THE POLO LOUNGE HAS BEEN STEALING SCENES—AND CAUSING THEM—FOR 75 YEARS. BY SPENCER BECK

Cell phones? How bourgeois. In 1941, when the Beverly Hills Hotel’s El Jardin restaurant morphed into the instantly legendary Polo Lounge, pink phones were brought to your table on a silver tray and plugged into your tableside jack. The hotel operator then connected your call, thank you.

16

Those were the days when power had a little flair in Hollywood, long before Instagram and Snapchat made fame a universal (read: dreary) fifteen-minute commodity. Named for a polo-playing clique that included Walt Disney, Darryl Zanuck, and Spencer Tracy, pals of the

LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

hotel’s then-owner, Hernando Courtwright, the high-style commissary famous for its McCarthy Salad and Dutch Apple Pancakes became grand/ ground zero for Hollywood’s swell set, including “don’t mess with me” movie stars like Marlene Dietrich, who briskly checked out of

the hotel when the restaurant refused to seat her wearing her trademark slacks (they quickly changed their policy), and Frank Sinatra, who, in 1966, when politely asked to quiet down by art collector Frederick Weisman in the next booth, hurled one of those iconic phones at the

stunned gentleman, who almost died as a result. Fun stuff. Even today, the Polo Lounge attracts celebs and mere mortals looking for a connection to Hollywood’s exciting, pink-hued golden era. Just remember, in 2016 you have to step outside and make your own phone calls… if you must.

100 YEARS OF MAGNITUDE A HOLLYWOOD STAR FOR THE AGES STILL OUTSHINES THEM ALL. By spencer Beck

The last, incandescent flicker of Hollywood’s great golden age lives on, not in the shady confines of Bel-Air, but rather on a small, cobblestone street in the heart of Paris’s immaculate, gleaming sixteenth arrondissement. This July 1, Olivia de Havilland, the oldest living actor who has won an Academy Award (make that two, in fact), celebrates her 100th birthday a stone’s throw

from the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower. Somehow fitting. Elegant but famously feisty, de Havilland, most renowned for her role as Melanie in Gone With the Wind (and the only living cast member of that original megamovie), not only won Best Actress Oscars for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949), she also broke cinematic ground for her part in the much

18  la-confidential-magazine.com

lauded The Snake Pit (1948), a brave portrayal completely devoid of glamour that pointed up the horrors of U.S. mentalhealth institutions at the time. More significantly, de Havilland changed Hollywood history forever when, in 1943, she dared to take Warner Bros. to court when the studio refused to allow her out of her contract. The win for the actress remains one of the

most far-reaching legal rulings in Hollywood—the resulting “seven-year rule,” in fact, is still known as the De Havilland Law. Even the star’s long-estranged sister, the late Joan Fontaine (the two are the only siblings ever to have won lead Academy Awards), would later comment, “Hollywood owes a lot to Olivia.” And so does the great movie-going public. Bon anniversaire.

.

The divine Miss D: Almost seventy years ago, in 1947, a thirty-year-old Olivia de Havilland won the first of two Best Actress Oscars, which have graced the star’s home in Paris for over half a century.

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

It’s not the women In my lIfe… it’s the life in my women. Thank you, Mae West, for the paraphrase, and welcome to our annual Women’s issue. This spring, we celebrate with feverish fun all the gals in LA who enliven our city, from Santa Monica to Silver Lake. First up: our cover star, Kate Beckinsale! Who can resist a beautiful, badass Brit chick with chic for days? Funny. Cheeky. Smart. Complicated. That’s my kind of woman, frankly. (Plus, she smokes when she feels like it. Counterintuitive to today’s Puritanical point of view—I find that sexy.) I can’t stand prissy women, and there are none in my personal or professional life. Thank God. It’s worth lifting the veil once a year and calling out a few of the don’t-mess-with-me dames who help create our magazine every month. Here in LA, our publisher, Alison Miller, is a force to be reckoned with. When I’m not butting heads with her (such is the biz vs. edit model since time immemorial), I do my damnedest to crack her up. As another Kate (Hepburn, that is) once said, “If you can’t laugh, you might as well slit your throat.” Alison gets it! Lovely, talented Ramona Saviss, our deputy

34  la-confidential-magazine.com

editor, keeps everything running, despite my attempts to overwhelm her with endless tasks, both consequential and trivial. Ramona is a model of “can-do” equanimity. I fear at some point she may well snap, but she hasn’t yet. Our VP of creative and fashion, Ann Song, a longtime colleague and friend, is as tough as she is talented. Ann’s obsessive attention to detail and excellence can occasionally irritate the uninitiated. My point of view: When someone is good, who cares? Bring it! I can’t leave out my boss in New York, Chief Editorial and Creative Officer Mandi Norwood. On a personal level, I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than hang—couple of drinks in hand—with this other badass, funny-as-hell Brit. Mandi’s laugh is infectious. Professionally, there are some rollicking “Devil Wears Burberry” moments, which I perversely relish (and which Mandi knows I adore). Reminds me of the good old days in publishing. Out of an abundance of caution, I’ll leave our owner and CEO, both women, out of the mix here. I love them too much to provoke their good natures and risk being handed that

appropriately colored pink slip for my famously snarky attitude, or “snark charm,” as I prefer to think of it. At the end of the day, women have it all over men. They’re much more sensible, clever—once you figure out how to maneuver all the Venusian obstacles. Even in love. In that regard, I often joke that gay men are impossible (I’m gay). To catch a top-of-the-line mate you have to be handsome, smart, successful, witty, and sexy like a porn star. Oh, and don’t forget a flat stomach! Very important. Women aren’t so shallow. I’m quite certain Georgina Chapman (see “If the Shoe Fits,” page 80), the beautiful and talented designer who also happens to be married to Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, could care less about HW’s stomach. As it should be! Bless her and all women! Okay, off to do some crunches… Cheers,

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

It’s reIgnIng (wo)men! As serendipity would have it, on the eve of our annual Women of Influence issue, I received a beautiful coffee table book for my birthday: Barbie: The Icon (thanks, Nicolas!). Pouring through the gorgeous pages ignited so many nostalgic childhood memories, despite my often conflicted feelings about the dolls and the impossible beauty standards they have historically presented. As I read on, I realized that it was time to give Barbie a second chance. In fact, her very existence was launched by a woman of vision, Ruth Handler, who in 1959, and for the first time in history, created an adult-bodied doll, one which represented what young women could aspire to be. Neither her husband, Elliot (then the CEO of Mattel), nor his directors were enthusiastic about moving away from infant-styled toys. Yet, with more than 1 billion Barbies having been sold worldwide to date, and with one purchased every three seconds, its success has been undeniable... A retrospective look at Barbie is, in many ways, a historical reference that sheds light on the changing culture,

36  la-confidential-magazine.com

politics, gender roles, and consumer habits of the time. Despite an assumed emphasis on fashion and nurturing careers, Barbie was first and foremost a role model, a rebel who challenged presumed maternal and domestic roles. In fact, since her debut, she’s represented more than 150 careers and encouraged three generations of young women to dream and aspire. Barbie the astronaut was released in 1965, and the decades that followed saw Barbie as a presidential candidate, doctor, Unicef ambassador, military sergeant, Nascar driver, rap musician, and pilot. At the start of this year, Mattel announced the addition of alternative skin tones and body types (tall, curvy, petite) for Barbie. The company also continues to educate in areas such as conservation with the BCause line of dolls, environmentally focused Barbies manufactured using exclusively recycled materials. A long time coming: Barbie has officially entered the new millennium! For references of inspiration and accomplishment, the women featured in this issue need look no further than themselves. Each in her own right is boundary-breaking, a

glass-ceiling buster, including our talented cover star, Kate Beckinsale, who is known for her action-star roles and generosity to charities such as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Habitat For Humanity. As we celebrate the many brilliant women of LA this month and next, it is our honor to co-sponsor several high-profile events, each led by a fantastically talented woman, such as Susan Rosen, president of Friends of Greystone’s board of directors and producer of the Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance (April 30–May 1); Stephanie Allain, director of the LA Film Fest (June 1–9); and Judy Walker, director of LA’s Taste of the Nation (June 5). We’re looking forward to a lovely late spring full of inspiring festivities while celebrating an endless number of gifted, capable, and iconic women in Los Angeles! Cheers,

nvious of Gwyneth E Paltrow’s glow-from-within skin? Stop it! The launch of goop by Juice Beauty gives beauty fiends worldwide clickable entry to a beauty regimen that is Paltrow– approved. The multifaceted A-list actress/blogger/ supermom just debuted a line of luxe skincare loaded up with au naturel ingredients like apple and aloe. Natch. “We literally did not rest until we had a set of six products that are, quite simply… perfect,” insists Paltrow of her melting cleanser, replenishing night cream, revitalizing day moisturizer, enriching oil, exfoliating instant facial, and perfecting eye cream. Paltrow’s famously shy M.O. makes the widespread panic over her goop platform even more intriguing. Of course, she uses her celebrity to create enough stickiness for the site, and her perfect just-left-the-beach blond locks and try-to-guess-her-age skin certainly help brand her burgeoning empire—one which centers around a pure and squeaky-clean îî

But, the truth is, the minimalistic luxury lifestyle Paltrow promotes was not a moneymaker until turnaround queen Lisa Gersh, the brand’s CEO since 2014, entered the scene. Gersh pushed Paltrow to diversify her marketplace and create a revenue stream with goop-branded partnerships and products. A Martha Stewart Living

All of the products she approves in a “good, clean, goop” way ooze simplicitymeets-chic, from barely there T-shirts that are closet staples, to one-off collaborations with quietly cool designers such as Monrow. But the main focus for Paltrow has always been beauty—paired with wellness. Says Paltrow, “We have always been

Local foodie queens (FROM LEFT) Caroline Styne and Suzanne Goin start their reign over LA’s summer-staple concert venue, the Hollywood Bowl (BELOW), and turn it into a food and wine destination.

There’s a major changing of the guard at LA’s premier summer hot spot, the Hollywood Bowl. Starting with this summer season, which kicks off June 18, Bowl-goers will be able to taste the difference. LA dining queens chef Suzanne Goin and wine director Caroline Styne, both 49, of The Lucques Group, were brought in during the offseason to overhaul the 94-year-old institution’s food and beverage program—all of it. “We definitely wanted to put our mark on everything,” says Styne, and the dynamic James Beard Award-winning duo has done just that: The wine bar will be run by A.O.C.—natch—and the Pool Circle by higher-end Lucques, while two marketplaces based on The Larder will feature build-yourown picnic foods and wine. But, the biggest difference will be the rooftop restaurant, Backyard at the Bowl. Here, Goin will serve up more shareable, casual fare (than the preceding steakhouse concept). “I’ve never been a super fancy person, or a fancy cook,” says Goin. “It’s really more about having delicious food in that environment, like sitting in someone’s cool Hollywood Hills backyard.” That’s not all—major changes are coming to the concessions, as well. “We’ll incorporate LA street food, giving everything a little more personality,” says Styne. Goin, who grew up in the Hollywood Hills, currently lives within walking distance of the Bowl. “It’s something I would have never dreamed up,” she says. “[The Bowl] has always been a part of my life and such an important part of LA.” Now, she and Styne are an important part of it. hollywoodbowl.com

While most famous for her large-scale sculptures, Claire Falkenstein (1908–1997), one of America’s most experimental and prolific 20th-century artists, innovated techniques and styles in an enormous variety of media. This spring, her first full museum retrospective, at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, will bring to light her range: The 67 pieces on display will represent her work in sculpture, painting, drawing, lithography, jewelrymaking, glass-working, and more. Standout pieces include Orbit the Earth (1963), a nine-panel painting almost 20 feet wide, depicting an entire abstract map of the earth, and Fluids in Motion, also called Circuit (1947), a sculpture of relief-carved Plexiglas mounted onto painted wood and illuminated with fluorescent light. Such a diverse body of work bespeaks a panoramic talent, says the show’s curator, Jay Belloli, who cites several Falkenstein “firsts”— the first to create abstract ceramic sculpture (in the late ’30s); the first to paint on curved aluminum (a decade later); and among the first to experiment with different shapes for her canvases and frames. “She innovated so quickly,” he says. “She took chances at every turn.” It’s a spirit LA helped foster—the city freed Falkenstein (who lived and worked in California for much of her life, including her last 34 years in Venice) to experiment without the strictures of long-held artistic traditions.“The vastness of LA creates an incredible variety of art,” says Belloli—an ethos perfectly personified. A lot changed for me after that movie—it was a big eye-opener [to] how women felt empowered by the female characters, how unusual that was, and how powerful media images can impact people. On focusing on children’s media: [The media] is training kids from the beginning to have

an unconscious bias, and teaching them that girls do not take up half the space in the world because they profoundly don’t [appear] in the entertainment industry. On launching the Bentonville Film Festival: We had almost 40,000 attendees [last year] and can expect double that this year. We had 45 films in competition and almost 95 percent of them got distribution!

On promoting films made by women and minorities: We are the only film festival in the world that gives guaranteed distribution to our winners. game on!

This spring, an LA institution is reimagined and restored. Highland Park Bowl, formerly a salt-of-theearth-meets-hipster-beloved bowling haunt on the Eastside, now flaunts a city-chic vibe and have-it-all amenities. Originally opened in 1927, during Prohibition, the space formerly known as Mr. T’s Bowl has been given a revamp by 1933 Group (known for LA hot spots Sassafras, La Cuevita, Bigfoot Lodge, Thirsty Crow, and more). Updates include eight restored bowling lanes, a live music stage, dueling bars, and a music room named Mr. T’s (homage to the historic space’s former owner, Joseph “Mr. T” Teresa, an Italian immigrant by way of Louisiana, who bought the property in 1966). With a nod to the bowling alley’s history, the renovations are inspired by the property’s original Spanish Revival aesthetic. “1933 Group’s ongoing philosophy is to embrace the history and nostalgia of Los Angeles through its bars, and Highland Park Bowl is no exception,” says Director of Operations for 1933 Group, Jared Mort. The revamp includes an updated menu inspired by Mr. T’s Italian roots, including spicy sausages and wood-fired Neapolitan– style pizzas. With a focus on nightlife, the bar’s craft cocktail program will highlight playful twists on classic libations—standouts include the Modern Washout, an elevated version of the French Martini, and The Dude Abides, a play on a White Russian—and a bow to LA’s most beloved bowler, the Big Lebowski. FREE SPIRIT IN HIS DEBUT AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR, DESIGNER PETER DUNDAS CONJURES THE CAVALLI WOMAN OF TODAY.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRUCE WEBER

BY BRYN KENNY

Peter Dundas’s Spring/ Summer 2016 collection for Roberto Cavalli— his first as creative director—draws from the Italian house’s familiar codes while incorporating a more irreverent, street-smart

perspective. “I wanted to explore sportier ways of expressing the Cavalli woman’s vibe,” says Dundas of his inspiration behind the biker babe-meets-’80s pop star ensembles he sent down the runway. “The

collection is precious, but there is no attitude. It’s a more modern way to dress that doesn’t forget the essence of who the Roberto Cavalli woman is—very glamorous and sexy.” For daytime looks,

Dundas paired modern separates, such as a billowing trench coat in washed-out peach, with short shorts and buff leather, while lavender, high-waisted jeans, burnout suede tops, and brocade lion prints îî

were mixed, matched, and thrown together with abandon. Somewhere along the way, he segued day into night, pairing sweatshirt-style tops with high-low ball skirts and incorporating accents of shimmering lamé and graphic animal prints. In the collection are plenty of red-carpet moments, including embroidered, dancing-on-tables minis, and more ethereal (though hardly less bold) evening dresses consisting mainly of precariously placed swaths of tie-dyed chiffon and anchoring hardware. “They are all Cavalli classics but reinterpreted for the Cavalli woman of today—a true free spirit who drinks in life with the utmost intensity,” says Dundas of his muse. “She puts her perception of beauty, sensuality, and vitality before the constraints of fashion trends.” It comes as no surprise that Dundas knows the Cavalli woman well; his new post marks a reunion of sorts between the Oslo, Norway–born designer

and the Italian luxury house. From 2002 until 2005, Dundas served as chief designer at Cavalli, holding posts at various other blockbuster brands in between then and now, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Emmanuel Ungaro, and Emilio Pucci. Although he now divides his time between Cavalli headquarters, in Florence, Italy, and his longtime home of Paris, as a teenager he lived with his family in Indiana and attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City. This eclectic upbringing is evident in his boundarypushing aesthetic. “Every experience I have had has added a layer to who I am as a designer today,” he says. “Cavalli has a unique place in fashion that I want to reclaim and evolve. We are just getting started, but I am looking forward to the journey.” 362 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-276-6006; robertocavalli.com

style SHOP TALK A star is reborn: Following hot-ticket openings and mega renovations, Rodeo Drive makes a Hollywood-worthy comeback as LA’s—if not the globe’s— premier shopping destination.

RODEO RIDES AGAIN

Staking its claim as the luxury retail destination in LA, Rodeo Drive has been reborn—with a retail vengeance! This year alone the city’s top high-end haven dotted its palm tree-lined street with new openings, remodels, and debuting flagships. “Rodeo Drive is one of the best places to shop, with more than 100 world-renowned flagships

and stores comprising just three small blocks,” says Julie Wagner, CEO of the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau. In the past year alone the historic strip saw an influx in luxury brands setting up shop, including hot-shot horology house Audemars Piguet (254 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-2478181; audemarspiguet.com),

82  la-confidential-magazine.com

which celebrated the debut of its newest boutique (its fourth in the US) with a star-studded party at Two Rodeo in the heart of Beverly Hills. Nearby, IWC Schaffhausen (329 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-734-0520; iwc.com) unveiled its second US flagship, concurrently unveiling a special Swissmade Rodeo Drive Limited

Edition luxury timepiece. Across the street, the new Emporio Armani store (338 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-271-7790; armani.com) covers 5,900 square feet (on two floors) with Armani’s signature oh-so-cool gray tones and metallic detailing. To complement its complete renovation, Rodeo Drive’s longstanding Fendi

boutique moved up the street to unveil a sparkling new West Coast flagship (201 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-623-3420; fendi.com). Designed by Peter Marino, the new store is inspired by the brand’s Roman heritage. Adding to the Italian homage, luxury brand Battistoni (9536 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310-274-4500;

“Rodeo dRive is like a new fRontieR—it’s a whole new discoveRy!” — gianni battistoni battistoni.com), known for bespoke tailoring, ultimately decided to open its very first US shop next to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The 6,500-square-foot store was actually built in Italy before being shipped to and assembled in Beverly Hills—because, of course, that’s what a $4 million “boutique” does. “The development that Rodeo Drive has had in the last twenty years is quite amazing,” says Gianni Battistoni, whose father founded the brand in 1946 just across from the Spanish Steps in Rome. Following suit, Bally (340 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-2471012; bally.com) opened its

first US flagship in LA in February. The two-story space features the Swiss brand’s signature red-andwhite stripes motif and includes a private rooftop patio overlooking the uberglam scene below. Coming up, Bottega Veneta (320 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-8586533; bottegaveneta.com) debuts a reiteration of its iconic LA store, which has been a Rodeo mainstay since the late 1970s. The two-level boutique will be a uniquely designed “maison” (a sister store to the brand’s only other one-of-a-kind outpost, in Milan) that will pay tribute to LA architecture—90210-style! Certo!

STYLE JEWELRY Bijoux de vivre: Sydney Evan’s Rosanne Karmes, here at home with her “BFF,” Charlie, enchants the Industry set with her stunning, symbolic jewelry, like the blue sapphire-anddiamond pieces in 14k gold from her new collection, including this evil eye ring ($2,820) and multicharm necklace (price upon request).

BAUBLING OVER

What do Kate Moss, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, and a beautiful bevy of other A-list celebs all have in common? A mutual love for the symbolic stylings of jewelry design house Sydney Evan. Here, founder and designer Rosanne Karmes, who named the company after her two children, shares what it’s like sitting/ glittering at the top of an LA-built jewelry empire, as well as launching her latest, super-sized signature pieces to commemorate the brand’s big 1-5. On becoming a jewelry designer: I come from very humble roots. When I

84

was 11, I’d take the bus with my best friend to an old bead store in the Valley and buy puka shells, turquoise, silver, mother of pearl... I’d make jewelry and sell it at school; then I got a job with a jeweler in Downtown five days a week and learned the business. Having strong motherly instincts: My mom [a Holocaust survivor, like her father] used to sew red string into our clothes [out of superstition]. That’s where the first horseshoes, wishbones, clovers—anything superstitious in my designs—came about. The game changer: I met Jim Gold [President and CMO

LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

of Neiman Marcus Group] and I remember when he told his buyer, “You see this line? This is a million dollar line, and you really need to buy into it.” The minute he said those words, everything changed… Two years ago we became the numberone designer in jewelry at Bergdorf Goodman. Bon anniversaire! I can’t believe it’s been 15 years! I decided I wanted to supersize my original love, the evil eye, as well as other iconic shapes and make them with big diamonds. It’s a very special [capsule] collection where I get to showcase all my little symbols. sydneyevan.com

“WE’RE TRYING TO MAKE EVENINGWEAR LESS CHEESY...” —KATHERINE HOLMGREN

GALVAN-IZED!

Already a favorite of A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Jessica Alba, Londonbased haute couture house Galvan has taken the Hollywood starlet set by storm. Now, this spring, following an instantly sold-out exclusive collaboration with Opening Ceremony (after being the first-ever eveningwear line the

top-tier fashion boutique carried), the brand is launching a pre-collection and their own e-commerce website. Founded by four hotchick entrepreneurs—Sola Harrison (creative director, 31), Katherine Holmgren (CEO, 31), Anna-Christin Haas (designer, 37), and Carolyn Hodler (sales director, 31)—based in LA, London, and Düsseldorf,

Germany, Galvan gives the modern girl a sleek, contemporary red-carpet dress that’s fashion-forward yet timeless. Their goal? “We’re trying to make eveningwear less cheesy,” says Holmgren. Inspired by ’90s supermodels, Galvan is making the modern red-carpet dress feel younger and sexier, without the unnecessary frills or hefty price tag. “A

dress that’s $1,500 isn’t inexpensive, but for the quality you’re getting, it’s more accessible [than other labels],” says Holmgren. And in a “black-tie optional” city like Los Angeles, versatility is key. “We want our girls to be able to go seamlessly from an [awards] dinner to a dive bar and still feel comfortable,” adds Harrison. Best dressed! To punctuate the launch of their e-commerce website, Galvan founders (TOP LEFT, FROM LEFT) Katherine Holmgren, Anna-Christin Haas, Carolyn Hodler, and Sola Harrison debut a stunning Spring/ Summer pre-collection celebrating strong, silhouette-forward pieces, such as a midnight blue and black high-neck lace dress (ABOVE, $1,525) and the Origami dress in pure white (TOP RIGHT, $1,475).

STYLE WATCH

WONDER WOMEN

According to Euromonitor International, the global market for women’s luxury watches last year was estimated at $10.3 billion, a 60 percent increase since 2005. This season, as the demand for serious and stylish women’s timepieces continues to expand, watchmakers are putting more sporty pieces in play. Watch wardrobe favorites these days (for men and women) center around timepieces that are finely tuned and also multifaceted, watches that can go from the gym to the boardroom, that are not only handsome (and versatile!) but incorporate helpful functions that make them useful tools. Beauty… and brains. For more watch features and expanded coverage go to la-confidential-magazine.com/ watches-and-jewelry CLOCKWISE FROM TOP RIGHT:

ANNE SISTERON SPARKLES Being born in Paris and later modeling around the world lit a creative spark in Los Angeles-based designer Anne Sisteron that translates into jewelry that blends classical pieces with fashion forward flair. “A collection should evolve over time, as the women wearing it do,” says Sisteron. With a background as a Graduate Gemologist and GIA Diamond Grader, the stylish designer sources stones that make her pieces an eye-catching marriage of color and radiance. A red-carpet staple, Sisteron’s unique pieces are favorites with A-list style icons such as Carrie Underwood, J Lo, Gwen Stefani and Ariana Grande.

KISS US, K AT E Who doesn’t want to make out with K ATE BECKINSALE? Smart, smokin’ (and funny as hell), the badass action star goes all Jane Austen on us with Love & Friendship.

Kate Beckinsale wants you to know that she won’t hurt you. She wants you to know this because, after thirteen years and four movies in the supernatural, action-oriented Underworld franchise, with a fifth—Underworld: Next Generation—due later this year, there’s some concern that she’s as capable of brutal physical violence as her tough-as-nails character, Selene. Nothing—she assures you—could be further from the truth. And indeed, she’s fairly certain she’s delivered her last round of on-screen asskickings for a while. “To misquote John Lennon, your public persona is what happens when you’re busy making plans,” says the British actress, grinning wryly (and looking barely 30 at age 42, an ability to avoid aging being one quality Beckinsale does seem to share with Selene). For she’s very aware that, after a promising early career full of romantic comedies and period dramas, it was her desire to expand her acting horizons into full-on big-screen action heroine mode that zipped her so indelibly into Selene’s skintight leather catsuit. “That’s the big joke about it: that was the stretch,” she chuckles. “That was the, ‘Oh my God, everyone thinks I’m this Jane Austen character. I better do something that turns that around.’ My God, it worked!” îî

Out of this Underworld! “It’s an enormous privilege to be one of the few women who gets taken seriously in a franchise like that. “There was something that was very liberating about having to become very, very good at stuff very quickly, with no experience—I’d never fired a gun or thrown a punch,” she says. “It still doesn’t feel like my comfort zone. I still feel like a huge fraud in that area.” The result, however, was a highly bankable tentpole franchise but also a more rigid overall perception of Beckinsale the actress—and she still got stuck in wardrobe as restrictive as if she were playing a 19th century ingénue. “Yes, Underworld also has a corset. I’ve never really gotten away from it. I’m never able to have a big lunch on a movie.” Despite consistently strong notices for turns in a variety of film genres in between her greenscreen work, none of those projects popped in the way Underworld, Van Helsing, Total Recall, and the like have—not that she’s sorry. “It is an enormous privilege to be one of the few women who gets taken seriously in a franchise like that. I don’t regret it for one second.” But they’re roles, she says, that “have sort of become what people think I actually am like—which is ludicrous to everyone in my life! I suppose it’s a backhanded compliment to the believability of the character, [but] I’m not sure that my career necessarily reflects my sensibility as much as I would like.” Now, however, Beckinsale is moving forward, and in a sense she’s doing it by looking back. Her latest film is Love & Friendship, based on the novel Lady Susan written by—oh, the irony—Jane Austen, in which she plays a shrewdly manipulative high society widow scheming to keep her fortunes afloat while brandishing a wicked rapier tongue behind closed doors—all the better to showcase Beckinsale’s superbly droll comedic gifts (the actress is frequently, disarmingly witty in person). In an additional display of retro-serendipity, the film—praised by critics at the Sundance Film Festival, as was her performance—is scripted and directed by Whit Stillman and costars Chloë Sevigny: The three of them became sensations early in their careers after collaborating on 1997’s The Last Days of Disco back when, as Beckinsale notes, Lily Mo Sheen, her 17-year-old daughter with then-partner Michael Sheen, “wasn’t yet a twinkle in the eye.” Back then, she remembers, she’d barely spent time away from England and was desperate to nail the specific American accent she’d been tasked with. “I had lots of [time] following Whit and Chloë and listening to how they were speaking and making prank calls to numbers I didn’t know, testing out this accent.” She admits her first foray to New York sans boyfriend, family, or

friends was an anxious time, complete with full-blown panic attacks: “Like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t think I can do it.’ Then going, ‘No, I’m making the decision to not let anxiety win.’” “I had quite bad anxiety at that age,” she adds. “Really bad panic attacks. I remember when I was offered The Last Days of Disco, thinking, Oh my God, none of my friends are free, my boyfriend’s busy, and my mom can’t come. I have to go to New York and be by myself. So I sort of let off into the unknown world of Whit Stillman and disco dancing… and I’m really glad I did.” It was a smoother ride this time around (with, “obviously, far less disco dancing,” she deadpans), and she marveled at the opportunity for the creative reunion nearly two decades later. “I’m thinking, ‘Who gets the same director, the same co-star, and they’re both still playing best friends?’” she says. “I mean, I was so in love with the script anyway, but the fact that those two were part of it made it really special.” “When I was writing it, I was thinking of Kate, that she was the best person for it,” says Stillman, who discovered that his leading lady provided sharp insight into the story that helped him perfect the script. Stillman had been both impressed and a little surprised at the level of Beckinsale’s mainstream blockbuster success following their initial indie film collaboration. “Obviously, for the action films she looks super-cool in latex, or whatever it is they put her in, but I think it was quite an unusual highway for her to get on, because she is very good at the other things. I think some people forgot all the good work she did before.” Beckinsale reveals a key personal factor in her choice to put her professional life in full McConaissance mode: “The big thing is that my daughter is now 17-years-old and couldn’t be paid to spend time with me,” she says. “That’s a lie, but you know what I mean. It’s a very different situation than having a five-year-old or a ten-year-old. So I’ve sort of come out of that deep-sea dive of motherhood. It is my way of coming up for air and going, ‘Oh, I get to have a little bit more latitude for myself in terms of what I want to do!’” In fact, Beckinsale’s recently embraced a long-simmering desire to write: She’s currently adapting a novel she’s optioned into a screenplay. “It’s an extremely dark sort of comedy,” she says, “a story about a mother and a daughter. It is quite an interesting period of time to be writing it.”

100 LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

Beckinsale’s parents were actors—the popular British sitcom star Richard Beckinsale, who died suddenly when his daughter was only five, and television actress Judy Loe; her stepfather Roy Battersby is a prolific television director. Given that acting is a profession that runs in the family, does her daughter also have a taste for the business? “She definitely wants to [act], yeah,” says Lily’s mother, noting “she just did a school play and smashed it… I’ve started to realize, it’s like some sort of contaminant or virus for actors—and medics. It seems like those are the [careers]—If your dad’s a doctor, you very often become a doctor. But if your dad’s an accountant, you quite often don’t become an accountant.” With her life now brimming with new, unexpected possibilities, she still feels very English at the core but also somewhat in “gypsy” mode. After living away from London so long that it now feels slightly unfamiliar, she is pondering acquiring a skill set she has dodged all her life, one which seems unthinkable for a Los Angeles “native” of nearly 20 years. “I still haven’t learned how to drive!” she admits. “And it’s so stupid now that my daughter is actually on the verge of getting a license. Like ‘Oh my God, I really have been submerged! My child that was in a highchair is about to tear off down the street in a large vehicle.’ How did that happen?” She’s also looking to be more proactive when it comes to hitting the town now that her nest is a bit emptier. She admits she truly enjoys socializing, but sometimes needs prompting to close a novel long enough to put a fashionable ensemble together and venture onto the scene. “Because I was an only child for a long spell, I literally could stay inside with a pile of books for an indefinite period of time—to a dangerous degree. Like a hermit. I really could do that,” she insists, revealing that she often tends to linger, dawdle, and resist actually getting out the door. “Once I’m out, I usually have a nice time. It’s just the going in which I have to be kind of forced.” After that, though, there’s no beautiful actress-as-shy-retiring-wallflower pretense— she slips comfortably into Hollywood’s social whirl. “I’ve got enough people that I like and run into, and then I have fun.” “I’m actually pretty good at having fun,” she adds with a sly smile that makes you believe her, and suggests that her earlier message is true: Kate Beckinsale won’t hurt you.

saving face

According to a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, if you haven’t struck it rich by the age of 35, it’s probably never going to happen. Not so with skin. For, regardless of good genes, UVA avoidance, and copious consumption of water, the vast majority of us will have a wealth of wrinkles by 35. No wonder the beauty industry reports an explosion of activity in antiaging products among consumers 35 and up. Offering salvation from the finest lines to the deepest crevices, “The age-specialist category,” says retail analyst Karen Grant of the NPD Group, “showed a 20 percent increase in 2015, the main growth coming from women over 35 who are buying and replenishing their products online.” And by all accounts, they’re buying in bulk. The US skincare market is

worth $5.2 billion. Almost half of that—$2.3 billion—is spent on prestige antiaging facial skincare, high-end products that offer high-tech hope of younger-looking skin for longer. “It has become almost like the cell phone industry, where each year there’s new technology and advancements,” says Grant. “It used to be that products were all-in-one—they were trying to do everything. Today, leading brands in antiaging offer products that are targeted to specific areas, whether it’s plumping and hydrating or focusing on fine lines and wrinkles.” Dr. Alexa Kimball, a professor of dermatology at Harvard, says, “It can be challenging for consumers to find the best products for their skin. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get results, but concentrations of ingredients matter, and formulations

matter.” She lists retinoids, alpha hydroxy acid, and salicylic acid as important for cell turnover, and moisturizers to boost the skin’s moisture barrier, which is depleted as we age, especially after menopause, causing dryness and dullness. Whichever products we choose, Kimball urges us to manage our expectations. “It is not realistic to expect to look 20 years younger.” However, she says, “you can start to see a real effect on fine wrinkles in a week, and by 12 weeks, detectable changes.”

CHANEL | SubLimagE Claims: Infinite regeneration, thanks to the key ingredient, vanilla planifolia, a botanical from Madagascar. The fruit and flowers are handpicked between April and May, then shipped to the Chanel Research and Technology Center, just outside of Paris, for a purification process known as Chrono-Extraction. This produces the most potent of active molecules, known as Éphémères de Planifolia, which are responsible for boosting the enzymes proven to help skin regenerate and look younger. chanel.com Our tester reports: “I tend not to associate Chanel with high-tech skincare. Fragrances, cosmetics, body creams, absolutely. But rigorous research and development, unique purification technology, and rare and potent natural botanicals (sustainably cultivated, too)? “Chanel’s commitment to being a top player in the antiaging category is manifested in Sublimage. It’s a fantastic range of products. As well as the luxury of the delicious fragrance, the rich bronze packaging, and the custard-thick indulgent textures, it actually works. “Yes, after four weeks of religiously using the products, I noticed my skin had a smoother, plumper, bouncier texture, which meant wrinkles and fine lines were less obvious, my makeup looked and felt better… heck, I didn’t even need as much makeup. “Sublimage is a beautiful skincare experience. And to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Chanel has launched three new densities of the cornerstone product, La Crème. For my dry skin, I preferred the medium texture, but Texture

LA MER Claims: Profound powers of skin transformation, derived from potent, highly active ingredients like nutrient-rich algae, protective antioxidant extracts, and semiprecious stones through a unique three- to four-month bio-fermentation process. La Mer was created by Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace scientist, following an accident that left him with severe chemical burns for which he could find no relief. cremedelamer.com Our tester reports: “In the first week of testing, the Renewal Oil (which goes on first) and brand-new Genaissance de la Mer created a noticeable texture difference to my skin. The Renewal Oil immediately absorbed, and the Genaissance was simply magnificent, making my face feel fresh and energized. After the second week of using them together, I saw small lines disappear and the whole of my face felt a bit fuller and livelier. Then, with every week, I noticed more softness, brightness, and an alert appearance. “One of the most refreshing aspects of the regime was the Lifting Eye Serum, which was gentle yet packed a punch. After only one week, the skin around my eyes was noticeably firmer and brighter, and more youthful, especially in the areas where I was collecting crow’s-feet. After three weeks, the evening’s application of serum came to feel like a minifacial for my eyes. “After day-and-night usage over six weeks, my face carried a natural suppleness, smoothness, even tone, and brightness that did not exist prior. My makeup also began to look so much better, more natural. And the fine lines that always seemed to peer through my foundation? Gone. Overall, my skin is much more alive. And happier!”

SISLEY | SISLEÿA Claims: This iconic product range aims to tackle behavioral aging (also called epigenetic) as well as genetic aging. Stress, sun, pollution, too much partying… all of these external factors cause a “jamming” of the skin cells’ life cycle and reduce the skin’s ability to repair and renew itself. New, powerful active ingredients, such as Lindera extract, Persian acacia extract, and yeast and soya protein complex, are said to help restore the cellular cycle’s functioning mechanisms. sisley-paris.com Our tester reports: “With its roots in the country that coined the phrase ‘femme fatale’ and its three-generations-deep reputation as the go-to skincare provider for some of the most beautiful women in the world, it’s no surprise that my Sisley Paris antiaging regime delivered results that can only be described as très bien! “Following a simple four-part plan, these new high-tech products were easily integrated into my daily routine. I began to look forward to the nostalgic fragrance each morning when applying the Sisleÿa Essential Skincare Lotion. With the lotion quickly absorbed into the skin, my face immediately felt more nourished. Despite the ultramodern plant-based formulations, the serum happily felt decidedly natural. Soon it was a favorite must-have, one I began to pack in my handbag for quick midday or in-flight hydration. “The Daily Line Reducer, while its scent was reminiscent of a self-tanner, packed the biggest and most surprising wallop of the four products. Used liberally on my décolletage, fine lines and wrinkles were visibly minimized in just three days! It’s as close to a miracle product as I’ve ever experienced. “The Eye & Lip Contour Cream and brand-new L’Integral Anti-Age moisturizer delivered a hydrated, firmer skin texture, with results peaking at about three weeks. While a bit heavy for daytime use, generous evening applications of the duo-moisturizers on my notoriously dry skin delivered a déjà vu of sorts from 10 years earlier.”

Our tester reports: “If you have dry skin, fine lines, and volume loss, I would highly recommend Dior Capture Totale. And I don’t say this lightly. Relying until now on good genes—and being lazy to boot—I wasn’t looking forward to using a regimen of products, but I grew to love the structure of the routine. And the products are gorgeous. “Within just two to three weeks, I saw a huge improvement in my skin. I had never used a morning routine, mistakenly believing skin needed a few hours to absorb moisturizers. But the lightness of the universal Crème MultiPerfection hydrated my skin without greasiness, allowing me to use less concealer and foundation and rendering my lines—especially those annoying ones around the mouth—less noticeable. I realized I was now repairing my skin rather than having to apply more makeup to conceal its shortcomings. I was floored by the lightness of the products, and yet as soon as I applied them, I could feel them starting to work. I did not lose dark spots, but by week five, my skin definitely felt firmer and far less dry. “These days, makeup is less essential for me, as my skin is well hydrated and my tone is more even. I especially love Dream Skin, which I began to use as an around-the-eye brightener but now use all over. It’s neither a tint nor a moisturizer, and yet the dreamy lotion gives my face a radiant glow.”

LA PRAIRIE | Skin Caviar Claims: Pure caviar extract is packed with amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals and tested to profoundly improve the skin’s appearance of firmness, elasticity, and tone. Formerly the caviar extract was sourced from wild sturgeon, long believed to offer the highest quality available. Now La Prairie has discovered an alternative high-quality source in the Baerli sturgeon, grown sustainably on aqua-farms. laprairie.com Our tester reports: “The La Prairie experience is a 10 out of 10. The first step, the Liquid Caviar Lift, goes on easily and only requires a small amount— one to two short pumps—to cover your face and neck. It’s a nice light layer, preparing skin for the next step, the Luxe Cream and Eye Lift, which provides a really luxurious layer of moisture and which absorbs nicely. While these are among the priciest of products I have tried, I use far less, so they will last much longer. “After four weeks of using the products, someone in my office asked me if I had work done! My fine lines are reduced, and the overall look of my skin is great. I am going to be 50 this year and have never had any kind of fillers or Botox, so the fact is, someone noticed the positive effects of La Prairie enough to ask me if I did anything! “Finally, the Skin Caviar Foundation is exceptional. One or two small dabs gives just the right coverage to reduce redness and age spots and leave my skin looking smooth, radiant, and even-toned. It’s the best I have ever used—hands down. “My husband, who now knows that I have been in a trial, says he notices a change and that I look refreshed and youthful. He says I should keep doing the routine! Those were his words, not mine.”

AS COMMERCE BECOMES INCREASINGLY CUTTHROAT AND PROFITABILITY IS CHAMPIONED AT ANY COST, IS THERE ROOM IN THE ECONOMIC EQUATION FOR KINDNESS, CONSCIENCE, AND HUMANE VALUES? MANY BUSINESS LEADERS ARE PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THEIR HEARTS AND SAYING YES...

by kathy blackwell

For decades, the boom in new technologies and expanding markets led to massive corporate growth and record profits. But that bottom-line success came at a huge cost to the environment, labor practices, and our treatment of animals, from their mass confinement on factory farms to wildlife trafficking and laboratory testing. As we move deeper into the 21st century, however, a new story is emerging. Those same innovations and advancements are not only bringing more awareness to animal cruelty issues, but they’ve become a force for good in the hands of today’s most innovative corporate leaders and entrepreneurs. Companies like Walmart, Whole Foods Market, and Chipotle Mexican Grill are paving the way by using creative solutions to stop the exploitation of animals, and although these businesses are driven by the belief that it’s the right thing to do, they’re seeing huge financial benefits as well. It’s a simple matter of marrying our values with our behavior, says Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, the country’s largest animal protection organization. In his new book, The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are Transforming the Lives of Animals (HarperCollins/William Morrow), a hopeful follow-up to his 2011 best seller, The Bond: Our Kinship With Animals, Our Call To Defend Them, Pacelle explores how innovative entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 CEOs, and scientists are rallying around this social movement and leading us forward by eliminating cruel historic practices. Pacelle recently met with Whole Foods cofounder and co-CEO John Mackey, a pioneer and leader in animal welfare, to talk about this new movement. They spoke about companies they admire, the next practical steps, and exciting predictions for the future.

116  la-confidential-magazine.com

Is there a sea change under way in how businesses large and small engage with animals? Wayne Pacelle: I see an enormous change at work in our relationship with animals. I started an animal advocacy group when I was in college, and at that point animal protection was a protest movement. When your ideas are viewed as on the margins, it’s easy for people to shunt them aside, to cast them as heretical or radical. Almost 30 years later, they’re at the center of the economy, and we’re really experiencing a period of punctuated change in all sectors of the animal-use economy. We’re seeing big changes in food and agriculture, we’re seeing big changes in science and animal testing, and enormous changes in fashion, wildlife management, entertainment. One reason that I’m happy to be here with John is that he’s been a leader in the corporate world in marrying our values with our commerce. When you disassociate values from business, you get terrible outcomes—things like slavery and child labor and environmental despoliation. This time you not only get better outcomes when businesses have their activities filtered through the lens of a good value system, but now there are great economic opportunities because the values have permeated society, and animal welfare is a universal value. John Mackey: I think values have always been in business. What’s changing is that consciousness is evolving. One hundred years ago, women didn’t have the right to vote; 150 years ago, almost half the United States still had legalized slavery. Our consciousness is evolving in all these different areas where we’re more aware. Part of it’s because, with the Internet and social media, things are much more transparent. The livestock animal business is probably about the least transparent part of the entire world economy: Animals on these factory farms are hidden from the public’s view. People used to be able

The humane economy: how To help More consumers are putting their beliefs about animal welfare into practice, and those choices are driving much of the change in the marketplace. Everyone can make a difference, says Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. Here are his suggestions: Vote with your dollars: Every time you buy something, you vote for or against animal cruelty with your money. Make conscious choices when buying food, cosmetics, and clothing. And join groups that help animals. Stop wasting food: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans throw out up to 40 percent of their food (including 22 percent of animal products), despite enormous costs in the form of greenhouse gas emissions, energy input, and food production expenses. We could spare more than a billion animals in the US alone every year just by eliminating food waste. Live as if all life matters: Adopt pets or foster them. Pick up plastic waste on beaches and in parks. The greatest antidote to cruelty is an informed and active citizenry. Influence lawmakers: Contact officials at the local, state, and federal levels about pending animal welfare legislation. humanesociety.org

to see cows grazing and they’d see chickens running around, and now they’re all in these shut-in giant sheds. The public doesn’t see that. Wayne and I have jointly sponsored a documentary film called At the Fork that’s going to raise consciousness. It’s going to have an impact. WP: There are animal documentaries every week that I’m learning about. Look at what Blackfish did with SeaWorld. This was one of the toughest entertainment companies out there. It was able to fend off activist protests for many years, but this single documentary upended that business model for the company. In the wake of that film, I was able to negotiate a landmark deal with the new CEO of SeaWorld and get the company to pledge to end all captive breeding of orcas and sunset its use of these creatures. SeaWorld also committed to a raft of other reforms, including redoubling its commitment to rescue and rehabilitation and joining in our global advocacy campaigns against commercial whaling and sealing and shark finning. JM: It’s a great example of the thesis that we’re talking about. What Blackfish revealed is the exploitative nature of using animals as entertainment and how these animals are enslaved and abused. And now it has upended the business model, because the public is outraged. WP: If only 15 or 20 percent of people in America are very visibly agitated, they can create a lot of trouble. JM: More like 5 percent, even. So it is evolving very rapidly. We’re living in this revolutionary time where we as a people are becoming more conscious. Diets are changing; the way we relate to animals is changing. Social media in particular makes things move very rapidly. In the food business, I’ve never seen as much change as there is right now, from online delivery to ingredient meals like Blue Apron and Plated to full-meal solutions and food trucks. WP: And we have companies that are innovating, like Hampton Creek, which is providing a plant-based egg substitute that’s hidden in the product. The consumer doesn’t even know the difference. It’s a functional equivalent in terms of the taste and texture. It’s not inconceivable that in 30 or 40 years we can produce meat in a laboratory setting where the meat is an animal product but without the brain or the heart and very little in the way of a moral problem. How do these options become embraced by consumers? WP: You need innovation and entrepreneurs who can develop the product and then market it. But I think you also need time—the ideas take a while to seep in. They marinate in society, and as they do, these things become acceptable. Look at gay marriage. We did a ballot measure in California in 2008 to stop extreme confinement of animals on factory farms. We thought we were going to lose, but we won, and we got more votes than any citizen initiative in American history at the time. On that same ballot, voters in California, which is viewed as among the most progressive of states, passed a ban on gay marriage. So from 2008 to 2016, we’ve seen a complete change on that issue. JM: Society is always evolving simply because old people die and young people come in and reach the majority. Now 80 million millennials are in this society, bigger than boomers. Boomers are retiring, some of them are dying, and so increasingly that millennial generation, which is more interested in the very things we’re talking about, is having a greater and greater influence. WP: If you believe that animals matter, that has practical implications for daily behavior, and once you convince people to align their beliefs with their behavior, that’s when you have a market opportunity. You have companies that can take advantage of that consciousness, like Whole Foods, Hampton Creek, or Cirque du Soleil. Ringling Bros. was one of the fiercest opponents of animal protection, but they gave up their elephants because they did the surveys: The customers didn’t want the elephants traveling to 120 different cities a year, living on chains for 22 hours a day, and they knew that was not something they could invest in while retaining the brand strength of the company, so they changed, which is also why SeaWorld agreed to end any breeding of orcas in order to sunset their use and make the existing whales the last generation at their parks. There are alternative forms of attracting and entertaining crowds. Cirque du Soleil showed that you can have amazing theatrical productions involving human acrobats and feats of incredible physicality, and it’s just so superior. You don’t have any of the moral baggage that comes with orcas or elephants in captive settings. What other changes are happening in entertainment? WP: The film situation is incredible. With computer-generated imagery, we have an incredible revolution that can take the live animals out of the equation but still give viewers a rich and superior experience. When you think of the toughest movie in terms of representing animals, it would probably be Noah. [Director] Darren Aronofsky used CGI to create this incredible animal diversity, and it was vivid and alive and authentic. The Planet of the Apes movies are the high watermark for this. You don’t need to victimize chimpanzees. This is how social change works: You no longer have the

Wayne Pacelle (left) and John Mackey

movie industry blocking an effort to protect chimpanzees that are endangered in the wild. There was always an exemption because the biomedical people wanted to use chimps in experiments, and the movie people wanted to use them, but now we have alternatives to using chimps in laboratories and in the movies. Chimpanzees [are listed as] endangered, and they have a highly protected status now. JM: “Doom and gloomers” are always projecting a problem out into the future, not understanding the continual creativity and innovation part. I get asked a lot by journalists, “What do you think the world’s going to be like in 10 years?” Ten years ago, let’s see: Tesla cars did not exist. If you go back 15 years ago, no one was using an iPod; no one was using a smartphone, and there was no Facebook, there was no Twitter. The point is, there’s continual innovation; there’s continual creativity. That’s basically the ultimate resource: limitless human creativity. We will solve our problems in ways that we can’t even foresee now. WP: We’re solving the problems quicker. JM: That’s partly because we’re so much better connected. Innovations are copied quicker. If Whole Foods did something 20 years ago, it would take years for [it] to show up anywhere else. And now when we do a new store, not only can we copy our own innovations; everybody else does, too. Who is leading this current evolution? WP: One thesis in my book is there’s really an ensemble cast of people who are driving this change. There are

Kindness Unto others

What do you foresee happening in the near future? JM: I’ll make a prediction: What is building is a scientific consensus around health. Although there’s a very strong vested interest in keeping people ignorant by the dairy industry, cattle and meat industry, and processed food industry, there’s a strong scientific consensus that is building that eating either none or only small quantities of animal foods leads to optimum longevity. The longest-living people that we know of are all plant eaters. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes—they all correlate very strongly with the more animal food you eat. Sometime over the next five to 10 years, I predict you’re going to see a scientific consensus come around—just like it took a long time for science to gather enough data to overthrow the propaganda machine that the tobacco industry was. WP: It takes activists and scientists and all of that together. JM: That’s what’s happening with food now. We have a healthcare crisis in America; we have an obesity crisis. Eighty percent of the healthcare money that we spend, which is bankrupting us, is due to diet and lifestyle. And it’s avoidable. You’re going to see this growing scientific consensus about how to solve our healthcare issues, which will be lifestyle shifts, [which] will correlate well with the humane economy, because it’s very interesting that the thing that will help solve our healthcare crisis and our obesity epidemic is basically living in a more humane fashion and not exploiting animals. The exploitation of animals is not just harming animals; it’s harming us. That’s what people don’t understand. WP: Absolutely. I really like the word “humane.” I chose it very intentionally because the root word of “humane” is “human,” and we’re the ones who are creating the problems, so we’re the ones that can solve the problems. John’s point is really important: It just so happens that when we’re better to animals, we have better outcomes throughout society. Companies are going to be more successful when they have a more animal-friendly sensitivity.

In this excerpt from The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are Transforming the Lives of Animals, Wayne Pacelle argues that animal welfare is the next great frontier in America’s cultural consciousness. We are in the midst—much closer to the beginning than to the end, I believe—of an epic political, cultural, and economic realignment in the treatment of animals. Doing something about a moral problem requires first identifying it and then intentionally breaking old habits and conventions. Confronting terrible injustices— from slavery and child labor to segregation to gender discrimination—was a painful and necessary part of our American tradition. With the availability of information on the Web, and the transparency it brings, it’s harder now to sidestep these questions. Just as people are shaken from their comfort zone when they realize that a T-shirt from a well-known clothing company was stitched together in some hellish, overcrowded factory in Bangladesh, more of us are connecting our choices and purchasing practices when it comes to matters of animal cruelty. Exposing abuses goes a long way in prompting sellers to get their supply chains in order, even as it better informs their customer base. Smart businesses want to get ahead of controversy and avoid protests, boycotts, and social-media campaigns that target them. We are seeing transformations in all sectors of the animal-use economy, and we will see many more. Once resolve has set in to change for the better, it’s easier than ever to make it happen. It’s not a matter of sacrifice—just conscious, better choices. Enlarging our vocabulary from “whaling” to “whale watching”

is just one example of an emerging shift in the manner we humans regard animals— whether in the wild, on the farm, in laboratories, or in our homes. The society we have now is different from what it was 25 or 100 or 200 years ago, with revolutionary advances in commerce, banking, currency, energy exploration, global transport, information technology, and computing. How can we not have a commensurate revolution in our treatment of animals? How can we tolerate the misery that comes from whaling, factory farming, trapping, and cruel industries of every kind once we recognize a more vibrant economic path forward, producing jobs that are better to hold, goods that are better to have, and a society in the end that is better to live in, without unlighted places where cruel things are permitted? entrepreneurs, consumers who are more conscious and alert, scientists who are helping with that, occasionally politicians who show great leadership. You also have huge philanthropy at work. We’re an enormously wealthy society in terms of having a lot of resources out there, and you have billionaires willing to invest in these issues. You’ve got Paul Allen, who is trying to solve problems, and you’ve got titans of capitalism like Carl Icahn who are trying to solve problems. And then you have corporations adapting. They know that they’re going to be roadkill if they don’t adjust to the new realities. JM: I’m pretty wealthy, and one of the things that happens is that you have all your needs taken care of, so then it’s a question of: Do you just pile up money for money’s sake or do you invest that money in ways that help the world to become a better place? WP: David Duffield, who founded PeopleSoft, a Silicon Valley company, committed hundreds of millions of dollars to solving euthanasia in dogs and cats in the late 1990s. He was mocked by a number of people: Why would you put all of that money into that kind of enterprise when we have so many human problems? Now you have philanthropists coming out of the woodwork on these issues. JM: People are beginning to realize that government doesn’t really solve many problems. Instead you have these twin forces: economic business entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs. Whole Foods has started three foundations, and they’ve all been very impactful in a short amount of time. So you’re combining the nonprofit model with the business model, and sometimes these work together. WP: Part of that ensemble cast that I talked about driving the change are animal scientists and ethnologists who are teaching us more about animals. It wasn’t that long ago that the dominant animal behavior theory was that animals operate just by instinct, that they’re like machines in the wild who are on an endless task of food gathering, mating, predation, and defense. Now we know that animals have feelings, emotions. Elephants have burial rituals; chimpanzees have rituals to honor family members who have passed away. We see incredible problem-solving, from crows to dolphins. Once you see that behavior, you can’t think of them as just this thing or commodity. And I think this increase in understanding animal consciousness layers over this social reform movement. That’s why no industry that’s exploiting animals in a severe way is going to be immune from this movement. One area we haven’t talked about too much is the animal testing issue, [which] can be completely overtaken by different technologies.

Fashion Forward One of the biggest changes in the luxury world centers on the use of fur, as more high-end fashion houses embrace cruelty-free alternatives thanks to innovations in technology and sustainability. The fur-free movement took a significant step forward in March, when the humane society of the United states and the Fur Free alliance, a coalition of 40 animal protection groups around the world, announced that the entire armani Group would be going fur-free beginning with the Fall/Winter 2016 collections. “Technological progress made over the years allows us to have valid alternatives at our [disposal] that render the use of cruel practices unnecessary,” says Giorgio Armani, who first met with Wayne Pacelle in Milan in 2009 to discuss his brand’s use of fur. “Pursuing the positive process undertaken long ago, my company is now taking a major step ahead.” Armani joins other leading houses that have turned away from fur, including hugo Boss, which just won the Humane Society’s Henry Spira Corporate Progress Award for its commitment to innovative, animalfriendly materials, and stella McCartney, the first and only luxury brand to be completely vegan, avoiding leathers, skins, and feathers, as well as fur. Other big-name designers to go fur-free include ralph Lauren, Tommy hilfiger, and Calvin Klein—and the ranks are growing.

TOO-COOL-FOR-SCHOOL INTERIORS FIRM CONSORT DEBUTS A STOREFRONT FOR H’WOOD’S MILLENNIAL MOVERS AND SHAKERS.

Powerhouse interior designers Mat Sanders, 34, and Brandon Quattrone, 29, both sporting heavyweight design résumés (Sanders is the editor-at-large for MyDomaine, and Quattrone uses his architecture background to help design large-scale projects, such as Jay Z’s Barclays Center, in Brooklyn), are known for decking out the LA homes of young (hot) Hollywood clients (Jessica Alba, Nina Dobrev, et al.). To launch their first-ever storefront, the duo added a third wheel, LA-based former gallerist-turned-art curator Marie Goble, 31, who helps source the city for the shop’s unique finds, including playful furniture, home objects, and art. On Consort’s rarefied roster of LA-based artisans are Desanka Fasiska, whose custom ceramics are handmade in Laurel Canyon; A-list stylist and interior designer Estee Stanley, who offers wares such as a standout minimalist coffee table; and Katie Kimmel (daughter of Jimmy), who created an exclusive line of witty objets d’art. The three rooms of the 2,000-square-foot space bring to life the eclectic mix of colorful objects and furniture from the firm’s popular online shop—like a perfectly made-up/unmade LA home. “We’re very excited to curate a more vibrant, fashionforward look for designers and [design] enthusiasts alike,” says Sanders. E-LUXE! ANTIQUES AFICIONADOS ARE ABUZZ FOR RUBYLUX, A NEW ONLINE MARKETPLACE FOR LUXURY VINTAGE. BY MATT STEWART

Since debuting in October, online antiques retailer RubyLUX has turned the booming e-marketplace model on its head. Following the success of Ruby Lane, which launched in 1998, CEO and founder Tom Johnson melded his experiences as a successful e-commerce guru and a collector of antiques and objets to create an unorthodox and compelling platform for the online sale of see-them-tobelieve-them vintage pieces. At RubyLUX, dealers pay a monthly subscription instead of commission on individual items, a model that “gives us more flexibility in making communication transparent between dealers and consumers,” says Johnson. Additionally, his highly curated team brings expertise and strong relationships to the site. “My staff is very knowledgeable in antiquities, art, and vintage,” Johnson confides. “We are looking for the best, so I’m relying on the relationships [they] have built over the years to provide that.” “It is a luxury industry, so being able to curate that effectively involves knowing the industry firsthand,” adds Johnson, who has been working with antiques dealers for 18 years. “I’m an avid collector of a wide range of things, which helps [facilitate] the best way to connect dealers and clients.” Connection established! rubylux.com

The World Keeps spinning The craze for in-sTudio cycling goes global as Peloton reinvenTs The wheel. BY MATT STEWART

Spinning continues to be the hottest trend in fitness, but that hasn’t made it any easier to carve out the time to trek to a studio. Fortunately, Jim Foley, founder and CEO of Peloton, has the answer: virtual classes. Via the 21.5-inch HD touchscreen tablet on each Peloton bike, riders have access to live streaming and on-demand classes, as well as virtual outdoor rides, from the comfort of their home. “We stream 12 live classes a day to 22 countries [and] close to 100,000 global riders,” says Foley. “We have recently announced an app that is available on 700 million iPhones. This will let people who [already] have a bike in the basement simply hop on and take a class.” Peloton creates 15 hours of content each day at its state-of-the-art studio in New York City, and its proprietary platform lets riders follow their progress on a leader board and buddy up with friends from around the world. Says Foley, “Peloton allows you to wake up at six in the morning, get on the bike, and have that 45-minute workout [done] by the time the kids wake up!” To purchase a bike ($1,995) or view class schedules, visit pelotonbike.com. Whether its for stunning panoramic views from Mama Shelter’s rooftop bar (ABOVE) or top-shelf cocktails (like this Tulip Thyme with genever, Chartreuse, and lemon, at the Belvedere), LA’s hotels are taking center stage as the city’s coolest hangouts.

LA’s hautest hotels are getting re-done—drawing out the city’s inn-crowd as well as prepping for the annual tourist rush. In line with its obsession with staying young and trendy, Beverly Hills is at the center of all the action. After an extensive remodel, the Peninsula Beverly Hills (9882 S. Nearby, L’Ermitage has gotten more than just a facelift: it reopens this spring as the Viceroy Beverly Hills (9291 Burton Way, Beverly Hills, 310-2783344; viceroyhotelsandresorts.com). The fully renovated hotel features all-new suites and a sparkling French-inspired restaurant, Avec Nous. Stager-turned-design diva Meridith Baer, 68, is known for tricking out LA’s most coveted celeb homes, and with A-list clients like Julia Roberts and Elon Musk, it’s no wonder her new furniture collection is suddenly de rigueur for California–chic digs. The Meridith Baer Home Collection features a line of customizable sofas, chairs, and pillows in Baer’s signature heavy white linen, with every piece made in Downtown LA. “[When furnishing a home], we couldn’t always find the items we wanted in the quality we were looking for, so I decided to launch a line of furnishings myself,” says Baer. As the premier home stager in the city, she knew what was missing from the LA market. For one: “Outdoor furniture that’s reflective of indoor furniture, but more forgiving and durable.” What’s more? The LA native gives back to the community through various organizations, including Venice’s Westminster Transitional Living Center, which provides support and living arrangements for homeless women and children who can’t return home. “The center helps women get back on their feet, find a job, and sets them up in modest permanent housing,” says Baer. “We have furnishings [with little] wear that we’re no longer using, so it’s a natural fit for us to pass these pieces on to these families.” Now that’s divine design. meridithbaer.com

But for all the glitz and glam, “Maui is [also] a wellness destination where people retreat to restore their energy,” says Head. The resort’s Willow Stream Spa offerings combine Mauisourced products with

ancient Hawaiian tradition and of-the-moment technology, such as a WaveMotion massage table, experiential “journey showers,” and a mud bar. In between the films and booze-soaked feasts, Maui does R&R—and even exercise—right. Near the festival venue at the LEED Silver-certified Andaz Maui (3550 Wailea Alanui Dr., Wailea, 808-

Guests can also indulge in the Omakase Blending Experience at the green ’ĀĀAwili Spa, where an apothecary consultant blends bespoke, targeted tincture pre-treatments

using local ingredients like kava kava, hibiscus, and coffee berry. If even the mellow buzz of a Hawaii–style film fest is too much, total serenity can be had just a hop across the Au’au Channel at the recently opened Four Seasons Resort Lanai (1 Manele Bay Road, Lanai City, 808565-2000; fourseasons .com/lanai). The highlight

reel: a Nobu restaurant (an LA favorite), a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, deserted beaches, the hot-and-cold-stone Royal Hawaiian Facial, and dolphins leaping through the crystalline Hulopo’e Bay. And when you’ve OD’ed on all that, Wailea and its star-strewn cinema are just a 15-minute inter-island flight away. That’s a wrap!

THE ROMANCE OF RUNNING AWAY NEVER GROWS OLD. AND IT’S SO MUCH MORE FUN WITH SOMEONE BY YOUR SIDE. SO YOU MAKE A PLAN. YOU DREAM OF A HIDEAWAY HIGH OVER THE OCEAN, WHERE YOU CAN LINGER OVER LUNCH ON THE TERRACE THEN WANDER IN A FRAGRANT GARDEN. AT NIGHT YOU SLIP QUIETLY INTO THE POOL TO FLOAT UNDER A BLANKET OF STARS. THEN WRAP YOURSELVES IN EACH OTHER’S ARMS IN FRONT OF THE FIREPLACE. YOU LEAN CLOSE AND WHISPER THAT RUNNING AWAY WAS A VERY GOOD IDEA. AND STAYING ANOTHER NIGHT WOULD BE EVEN BETTER.

PUT A RING ON IT The original engagement ring by Tiffany & Co. celebrates 130 sparkling years… and counting! Perhaps the country’s most iconic jewelry brand (and certainly the jewelry house with the most iconic packaging…), Tiffany’s was the very first to create the engagement ring as we know it today. Founder Charles Lewis Tiffany created the timeless Tiffany Setting ring in 1886, featuring an elevated diamond placed higher than the band to show off the brilliant-cut stone and maximize the light reflected from it. Now, 130 years later, showing off (read: selfies) is more prevalent than ever—and, naturally, engagement rings are still front and center at every nuptial.

Celeb-rated designer Galia Lahav’s delicate, detail-heavy gowns endow LA weddings with international sex appeal.

Bridal and haute eveningwear designer Galia Lahav (169 N. La Brea Ave., LA, 323-556-3320; galialahav.com) has set up her first flagship in Los Angeles. Known for uber-sexy, barely-there gowns with intricate detailing, the Israeli style queen is already a celebrity favorite, with Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna numbering among her many fans.

The two-story boutique features glamorous handcrafted and custom-made dresses, plus ready-towear and accessories. If boho-chic is more your style, Loho Bride (8282 Melrose Ave., LA, 415-525-4544; lohobride .com) debuts a brick-andmortar boutique following a series of successful LA pop-up shops last year. The San Francisco-based concept, founded by

fashionista Christy Baird, brings a curated assortment of gowns and accessories—from hard-to-find indie labels such as Houghton, Elise Hameau, and Bo & Luca—to Melrose Avenue this spring. For the eco-minded bride, local favorite The Reformation (8017 Melrose Ave., LA, 213-7362810; thereformation.com) is expanding its boutique

to include its first-ever bridal shop. Known for contemporary, flow-y dresses, the LA-based, sustainably focused brand, founded by Yael Aflalo, uses repurposed materials in all its designs. The by-appointment-only shop will feature Reformation’s popular bridal collection, which includes dresses for both brides and bridesmaids.

BRIDAL destinations

Road trip! Get hitched in style at primo alfresco wedding destinations, including The Resort at Pelican Hill (here), Belmond El Encanto (above and left), and the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage (above right)—all just a quick drive from LA.

en plein AffAirs

Extend your one-nightto-remember into a 48-hour getaway with these must-visit wedding destinations just a quick drive from LA. No need to trek to Hawaii or even Napa for your nuptials: Turn that special day into a little getaway with a (local) destination wedding less than two hours from the city. Located just south of LAX, about 45 minutes from LA, Terranea Resort (100 Terranea Way, Rancho Palos Verdes, 310-494-

7891; terranea.com) sits on a 102-acre peninsula in Palos Verdes with 360 degree ocean views. Say your “I do’s” cliff-side and access the beach for stunning pre-ceremony photos at this resort with multiple outdoor and indoor spaces, including a massive 18,000-squarefoot grand ballroom. If an Italian destination wedding is more your vibe, opt for The Resort at Pelican Hill (22701 S. Pelican Hill Road, Newport Coast, 855-3158214; pelicanhill.com).

150  la-confidential-magazine.com

Located in Newport Coast, the property sits on the Pacific shore and offers alfresco ceremonies beneath an overthe-top Italian “rotunda.” With exclusivity and luxury being top priorities, the resort reserves at most one wedding per day in their Mar Vista ballroom and assigns the couple-to-be a personal butler for the weekend. North of LA, at Santa Barbara’s Belmond El Encanto (800 Alvarado Pl., Santa Barbara, 805845-5800; belmond.com),

indulge in ocean views from the jewel-like hotel nestled between the mountains and sea. Hold your reception beside the Spanish Colonialmeets-Craftsman-homelike property’s lily pond or on a terrace overlooking the garden. Nearby, at Bacara Resort & Spa (8301 Hollister Ave., Goleta, 844-2760955; bacararesort.com) in secluded Goleta, vows could be said atop a bluff or within a private garden, followed by festivities in the

beachside spread’s ballroom or more intimate wine cellar. And if you’re looking for an outdoorsy wedding sans the ocean breeze, The RitzCarlton Rancho Mirage (68900 Frank Sinatra Dr., Rancho Mirage, 760-3218282; ritzcarlton.com) is romantically nestled within the Santa Rosa Mountains and overlooking the Coachella Valley. The ocean, the mountains, the desert—go on, get out of town!

The “first lady of style,” as Nancy Reagan was often referred to, leaves behind a rich fashion legacy. Reagan, who passed away at the age of 94 earlier this spring, epitomized the powerful and glamorous edge associated with ’80s dressing: a little Diana, a little Krystle Carrington. Shoulder pads, skirt suits with matching hats, giant pearl earrings, and—of course—sequins for

the evening. Perhaps the former first lady’s greatest penchant was for the color red. “I always liked red. It’s a picker-upper!” the former Hollywood actress said in 2007—so much so that the phrase “Reagan Red” caught on early in her years as first lady (1981–1989). Often compared to Jackie O (who adored wearing French couturiers, including Givenchy), Nancy

made it clear her eye was more focused on supporting American designers. James Galanos, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Kenneth Jay Lane... she was friends with them all and took a keen role in helping design some of her standout pieces. Must-sees for every fashionista include the beige Galanos dress she wore with a dramatic gaucho hat to

Princess Diana’s wedding in 1981, the emerald green gown—with matching earrings—she donned for the Queen at a banquet in San Francisco in 1983, and the major, major ruffles on the pink and red ensemble for her official White House portrait in 1984. They were timeless looks, much like her inimitable style—runway perfection… then and now.
