Extension Activities
Level 3 Module 2
Lesson 4 Extension | Survival and Change
Working in groups, students use the additional fossil cards in Lesson 4 Resource B to compare fossils in the South Central region with fossils in other regions of the United States.
PREPARATION
Print and cut out one set of the additional fossil cards from Lesson 4 Resource B for each group. Write the name of the region on the back of each card.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Compare Fossils
1. Place the fossil cards from the South Central region in front of you.
2. Choose a set of fossil cards from a different region. Place the cards in front of you.
3. Compare the fossils from the two regions. Write one way they are similar and one way they are different.
4. Share your findings with the class.
Lesson 11 Extension | Survival and Change
Working individually or in pairs, students research mammoths to learn more about their environment and why they are no longer found on Earth.
PREPARATION
As necessary, curate resources for student research. Provide students with access to research materials.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Research Mammoths
1. Research mammoths.
2. Write about their environment.
3. Write about why mammoths are no longer found on Earth.
    4. Share your findings with the class.
Lesson 12 Extension | Survival and Change
Working individually, students write or draw daily observations about live caterpillars.
PREPARATION
As necessary, provide students with a word bank to complete this activity (3B). Have students save their
results to refer to later as they explore butterfly life cycles and characteristics of organisms that help them survive.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Observe Caterpillars
1. Observe the caterpillars in your classroom.
2. Record your observations by writing or drawing on the chart.
Observations
3. Share your findings with the class.
Lesson 20 Extension | Survival and Change
Working individually or in pairs, students observe and compare the life cycles of a butterfly and a grasshopper.
PREPARATION
Prepare to distribute color copies of the procedure sheet to students.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Observe and Compare Life Cycles
1. Observe the life cycle of a butterfly. Pupa

    Eggs
2. Observe the life cycle of a grasshopper.
Nymph Eggs

3. How are the life cycles similar? How are they different?
4. Share your findings with another student.
Lesson 31 Extension A | Survival and Change
Working individually or in pairs, students research rhinoceroses to learn more about where they are found in the world, their environment, and how their characteristics help them survive in their environment (3F).
PREPARATION
As necessary, curate resources for student research. Provide students with access to research materials.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Research Rhinoceroses
1. Research rhinoceroses and answer the questions.
2. Describe the environment where rhinoceroses live.
3. Choose three characteristics of rhinoceroses. Write each characteristic on the chart. How does each characteristic help rhinoceroses survive in their environment? Write your explanations on the chart.
Rhinoceros
Characteristic
How does the characteristic help rhinoceroses survive in their environment?
4. Share your findings with the class.
Lesson 31 Extension B | Survival and Change
Working individually or in groups, students choose an unexplored question or related phenomenon from the module to research or investigate. Students then present their findings to the class.
PREPARATION
Prepare a list of unexplored questions and related phenomena from the module. As necessary, curate
resources for student research or provide materials for teacher-approved investigations. Consider allowing students to bring materials from home. Prepare to review safety measures with students as needed.
Distribute and read aloud the appropriate procedure sheet to students.
Research a Science Topic
1. Choose an unexplored question or phenomenon.
2. Research the topic.
3. Prepare a presentation that answers the question or explains the phenomenon.
4. Present your findings to the class.
Carry Out an Investigation
1. Choose an unexplored question or phenomenon.
2. Design an investigation to explore the question or phenomenon. Your teacher must approve the investigation.
3. Carry out your investigation. Follow all safety measures your teacher reviews with you.
4. Present your findings to the class.
