Extension Activities
Level 1 Module 3
Lesson 1 Extension | Survival
Students listen to the last section of the book Over and Under the Pond (Messner and Neal 2017). Working individually, students draw some of the animals mentioned in the reading. Drawings should include where the animal lives (i.e., in or around the pond) and key features of the animal.
PREPARATION
None
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students. Instruct students to draw their models on a blank piece of paper.
Draw a Pond
1. Listen to your teacher read.
2. Draw the pond.
3. Add some animals from the book.Draw where the animals live.
4. Draw important details of the animals.
Lesson 7 Extension | Survival
Working in pairs, students create and compare food chains for the field or forest environments.
PREPARATION
Print and cut out one color copy of the field and forest food chain cards (Lesson 7 Resource C) for
each student pair. Distribute the cards and four sticky arrows to each student pair.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Make Food Chains

    1. Use the field cards and two arrows to make a food chain.
2. Draw and label the field environment food chain.
3. Use the forest cards and two arrows to make a food chain.
4. Draw and label the forest environment food chain.
5. Describe the food chains. How are they the same? How are they different?
Students reflect on their responses to the Conceptual Checkpoint. Working individually, students draw a model of the pika terrarium. Then they describe to a partner the interactions and dependence between living and nonliving things in the terrarium.
PREPARATION
None
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Draw and Label a Pika Terrarium Model
1. Draw a model of the pika terrarium. Add the living and nonliving things.
2. Label the living and nonliving things.
3. Share your model with a partner.
4. Discuss how the living and nonliving things in the terrarium help the pika survive.
Lesson 23 Extension | Survival
Students take a nature walk around the schoolyard. Working in groups, students closely observe two plants and determine whether they are the same kind of plant.
PREPARATION
Choose a location for students to observe plants. Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Observe Schoolyard Plants
1. With the class, walk around the schoolyard.
2. Choose two plants. Observe them.
3. What is the same about the plants? What is different? Write.
Same Different
Students vote as a class to research or investigate one unexplored question or related phenomenon from the module. With teacher support, students work in groups to perform research or carry out a simple investigation. Students then present their findings to the class.
PREPARATION
Prepare a list of unexplored questions and related phenomena from the module
driving question board. As necessary, curate resources for student research or provide materials and a procedure for a simple, teacher-designed investigation. Prepare to review safety measures with students as necessary.
Write and read aloud the appropriate activity name and procedure on a whiteboard or a sheet of chart paper.
Research a Science Topic
1. Research the topic.
2. Prepare to present what you learned.
3. Share what you learned with the class. Carry Out an Investigation
1. Gather materials.
2. Carry out the investigation. Follow all safety rules.
3. Share what you learned with the class.
Lesson 4 Extension | Earth Materials
Students observe more examples of Casas Grandes pottery at the Royal Ontario Museum website. Working individually or in groups, students relate their new knowledge about Mata Ortiz pottery to the Casas Grandes pottery they observe in the photographs.
PREPARATION
Provide students with computers or tablets, and cue the Royal Ontario Museum website search results for Casas Grandes (http://phdsci.link/2088). The ceramic collection search returns many results. Encourage students to choose an image quickly rather than looking at all of them.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Observe Casas Grandes Pottery
1. Explore the pictures of Casas Grandes pottery.
2. Choose one piece. Observe its colors and patterns.
3. Draw the piece of pottery.
Lesson 5 Extension | Earth Materials
Working in groups, students conduct an independent investigation to answer other questions about heating chocolate.
PREPARATION
Prepare one piece of chocolate on a small paper plate and another piece of chocolate in a small
plastic bag. Provide students with a timer and chocolate samples. Prepare to review safety measures with students as necessary.
Distribute and read aloud the following procedure sheet to students.
Investigate Heating Chocolate
1. Put the chocolate on a paper plate in the sunlight.
2. Put the chocolate in the plastic bag in your hand. Keep your hand closed.
3. Set a timer for 3 minutes.
4. Will heat from the sunlight change the chocolate? Circle.
Yes No
5. Will heat from your hand change the chocolate? Circle.
Yes No

    6. Draw your observations.

7. Share your findings with the class.
