Bring a little color into your day discovering one of Toledo’s many public artworks. Drive or boat past the new Glass City River Wall, an amazing mural transforming ADM’s grain silos into the largest mural in the country. The wall showcases the city’s dedication to the arts and urban renewal, while telling the story of its rich and vibrant cultural history. Artist Gabe Gault describes its depictions of sunflowers and Native women as honoring the significance of the indigenous peoples of the land. Other murals and public art can be found throughout the city thanks to The Arts Commission, dedicated to fostering Toledo’s art heritage. Ten new murals have been completed in the last year alone! During chillier days, duck inside to peruse the galleries of a city icon: the Toledo Museum of Art . It’s a community-driven museum — always free to the public — with a global reputation where you’ll find something for everyone: paintings, decorative art and sculptures from all over the world along with special exhibits, a family center, art classes and guided tours. Don’t miss the Glass Pavilion , housing the museum’s impressive collection of glass art from ancient to modern times and featuring regular glassblowing demonstrations. Bring a pop of color home with you by trying your hand at your own creation. Gathered Glassblowing Studio, Copper Moon Studio and Firenation Glass Studio and Gallery specialize in different techniques and offer private or public workshops. A glassblowing experience also makes a wonderful gift idea.

Center Stage Get inspired by live performances all year long! The Valentine Theatre offers a variety of musicals, family-friendly shows and choral performances, including collaborations with the Ballet Theatre of Toledo . Experience today’s most popular musicals at Stranahan Theater such as the award-winning “Hamilton” and other fan favorites. Toledo Opera’s season includes performances from awe-inspiring talent as well as educational programs for all ages. The Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts unifies and promotes the Toledo Symphony , Toledo Ballet and Toledo Jazz Orchestra , often bringing them together for epic collaborations. The Toledo Symphony offers orchestra performances as well as special performers. The Toledo Ballet performs its annual and longestrunning performance of “The Nutcracker” in the country and offers classes for all ages, abilities and styles of dance. Find more live performances from Toledo Repertoire Theatre and the University of Toledo Center for Performing Arts , as well as a wide range of live music all around Toledo at local bars and restaurants.

Ask the Artist

Muralist Chilly Rodriguez How does Toledo inspire your work? The people, the energy of Toledo, it's all very inspiring to me. I also find a lot of inspiration in the Metroparks. And our museum is world-class quality. Toledo is this little hidden gem. What values do murals add to the community? Toledo is really on the come-up, specifically in the arts scene, the mural scene and overall, too. I think it just uplifts people’s spirits and attracts a lot of people to your city. The big reason why I like to paint is, if you're having a bad day and you come across a colorful, vibrant mural, it's going to lift your spirits. What kind of stories do you try to tell through your own artwork? I'm really big on positivity and overcoming your obstacles. I had a pretty crazy upbringing, and I overcame all of that. So that's what I try to show people — no matter what, if you put your mind to something and your heart into it, good things can happen. Do you have any recommendations for your favorite spots? The art museum, the parks and local art like the murals downtown — you can go through different streets and come across a lot of great artists and really good murals. So many great things are happening in this city. Toledo Visitors Guide 5

Sunny, rainy, warm or wintry — there’s always something to keep you busy in Toledo, no matter the weather outside. By Jamie Rhein

SPRING

The National Museum of the Great Lakes offers a fascinating look at history from fur traders to the Underground Railroad, rum runners and more. Get fully immersed in the region’s past at Fort Meigs: Ohio’s War of 1812 Battlefield where interpreters in period clothing perform weapons demonstrations, then explore the visitor center that includes a museum and unique gift shop. At Imagination Station , there’s hands-on fun to be had by everyone. Build an air car, encounter a hurricane, create a light show and experience an indepth science demonstration. The museum’s KeyBank Discovery Theater transports visitors on a journey of exploration and discovery through state-of-the-art technology and an expansive 58-foot wide, 4K screen. Anglers get ready! Each spring as the temperature rises, thousands of walleye head upstream to spawn along the Maumee River during the Annual Walleye Run. Toledo’s reign as the Walleye Capital of the World is well earned, as the Maumee River is home to the largest population of migrating walleye east of the Mississippi.

Plan your trek and load up the car in August for the annual Toledo Jeep Fest, which celebrates Toledo’s part in producing this iconic vehicle. Before you head home, stock up on fresh, local produce or pick up home-baked goods for the road with a stop at the Toledo Farmers’ Market .
