Discover Belmont County’s history in an array of unique museums. From tales of military bravery to the industries that shaped the region, each museum offers a chance to explore the stories that define Belmont County.
The Tri-State Military Veterans Museum stands as a powerful tribute to the men and women who have bravely served in the Armed Forces. Visitors are first met with a striking polished black granite wall, the “Heroes Wall Honored Forever,” which bears over 3,000 names of veterans spanning from the Revolutionary War to today. Seven flagpoles proudly display the U.S. flag alongside
those of each military branch, symbolizing unwavering respect and remembrance.
Housed in a building rich with history, the museum itself has a story to tell. Originally built as a church in 1869, it later served as an American Legion Hall before becoming a place of remembrance for military service. A hidden stairwell leads to the original bell tower, while artifacts from past conflicts — including a Legion-emblazoned globe — connect visitors to generations of sacrifice and duty.
The museum was the vision of Belmont County native Floyd Simpson, who dreamed of creating a space to honor veterans before his passing. Today, his legacy lives on through hundreds of photographs, personal stories, and artifacts — 97% of which were donated by local families and veterans. Notable treasures include cannonballs, a newly designed remembrance room for fallen soldiers, and Simpson’s “lucky boots,” which carried him safely across a minefield during the Korean War.
More than just a museum, this heartfelt collection preserves the stories of those who served, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
Belmont County is proud to honor its heroes, and our community’s patriotism shines brightly during Memorial Day weekend. Each year, we welcome hundreds of motorcyclists from Run For The Wall as they ride into our county to pay tribute to those who have served. One of the most meaningful events of the year, the Memorial Day service held in front of the Belmont County Courthouse is a time to reflect, remember, and honor.
Situated along the historic National Road in downtown St. Clairsville, the Belmont County Heritage Museum offers an immersive glimpse into the county’s diverse and fascinating history. This site holds special significance, as the groundbreaking of the National Road took place next door at the Belmont County Courthouse on July 4, 1825. Visitors can view the original mile marker on display at the museum, showcasing part of the county’s rich transportation legacy. The museum is housed in a meticulously restored 19th-century sheriff’s residence and jail, designed by renowned architect Joseph W. Yost. From 1888 to 1976, this historic property served as the home of acting sheriffs and their families. The attached three-story jail adds a layer of intrigue for historians and paranormal enthusiasts.
Inside, you’ll find an array of exhibits that showcase Belmont County’s rich history and heritage in transportation, government justice, coal mining, and local industry and innovation. Notable memorabilia include a Hopalong Cassidy collection, a display of Imperial glass and molds, a detailed replica of the USS Constitution warship, designed by Belmont County native Josiah Fox, and an original 1800s wooden gavel and bench from the county’s first courthouse, among many other treasures.
Marking its 10th anniversary in 2025, the museum continues to be a vital hub of history, inviting visitors to uncover the stories that shaped one of Ohio’s oldest counties.
Step into history at the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing, a stop on both the Ohio Historical Underground Railroad Trail and the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Home to an extraordinary collection of over 8,000 artifacts, including African relics and a replica slave cabin, the museum brings to life Belmont County’s role in this historic movement.
In Fall 2026, the museum will relocate to Morristown’s historic Black Horse Inn, one of the last remaining inns and taverns along the original Historic National Road. Built in 1807 and believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad, this landmark will undergo renovations to house the museum’s treasured collection — made possible by a $3.9 million grant from Governor DeWine’s Appalachian Community Grant Program.

Each of its arches contains 37 ring stones, symbolizing the 37 states in the Union at the time of its construction in 1870.

The Historic National Road, the nation’s first federally funded interstate highway, paved the way for America’s westward expansion, serving as a vital corridor for the movement of goods and people. Today, travelers can experience classic inns, diners, and motels that trace 200 years of American history along this iconic route, fondly known as the “Main Street of America.” The Ohio portion of the National Road broke ground on July 4, 1825, near the present-day Belmont County Courthouse in St. Clairsville.
Every mile of the National Road was marked by a distinctive rounded pillar, indicating the distance from its starting point in Cumberland, Maryland. While many of these markers remain, others have fallen into disrepair or were removed during construction projects. The Ohio National Road Association (ONRA) is dedicated to replacing or refurbishing mile markers along Route 40 throughout Ohio. “To know where we’re going, we have to know where we came from,” says John S. Marshall, ONRA board member representing Belmont County. “We strive to place the markers at their historic locations whenever possible, preserving their historical significance and protecting the original structures whenever we can.”
In 2024, a replacement marker and an interpretive sign were installed at Ebbert Farm Market in St. Clairsville. Jerry and Lova Ebbert, the market’s owners, shared what this sign means to them.
What happened to the original mile marker?
JERRY: They did some work near the National Road years ago, and we heard it was moved to D.C., but you never know. A few years later, I was with our middle son’s eighth-grade class touring the Smithsonian. There was a mile marker just like the one that stood in front of where we grew up — we used to play around it every day. I looked closely and said, “Oh my gosh, this is it.” It’s the only one in the museum.
The plaque commemorates the Ebbert Family Farm, which has been in operation for more than a century. How did it feel to see that sign for the first time?
LOVA: I was in awe. It was something we never, ever expected.
JERRY: We’re just normal people going about our lives. We never stopped to think about the fact that some of our family has been doing this for 100 years — people who came before us and sacrificed. They’ve been through World War II and all the changes over time. And after 100 years, we were able to continue something they started. They couldn’t have envisioned this plaque. We are thankful for the people who have supported us over the years.
Celebrate this historic milestone with a scenic drive along the National Road, exploring landmarks that have been part of the landscape for over a century. Don’t miss a stop at Ebbert Farm Market, a local institution owned by the Ebbert family since the mid-1800s. Known for their conservation efforts, the farm practices crop rotation, contour plowing, and natural pest management. The Ebbert family started the business that would become the Ebbert Farm Market in 1919. The summertime market offers a wide variety of hand-tended fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, sweet corn, and watermelons. In the fall, you’ll find pumpkins, gourds, and more!

Meet Scott Hagan, the largerthan-life artist and Belmont County native known as The Barn Artist. Scott was the artist behind the Ohio Bicentennial Barns for Ohio’s 200th birthday in 2003. His portfolio includes nearly 1,000 barns, silos, and other structures across the country — including the new mural at the Barnesville Antique Mall.
How did you become The Barn Artist?
When I was 19, I painted my dad’s barn with the Ohio State Buckeyes logo and their mascot, Brutus. My grandfather showed the local newspaper a picture of the painting, and they ran a front-page story on it!
How has your painting process evolved?
I painted everything freehand for a number of years — I’m very proud of that. Now, I start the designs digitally, and I’m playing with different painting techniques.
If there’s nothing else to learn, that would get boring!
