As I reflect on my first year as President and CEO, I am so proud to be a part of Holden Forests & Gardens and deeply grateful for all we accomplished in 2024 thanks to your support. This issue of Forests & Gardens magazine includes our annual Impact Report. This integration allows us to share our successes, challenges, and progress directly with you while highlighting the dedication of all those who made it possible. We’ve included QR codes throughout the report, offering access to an extended online version and reducing the amount of paper used.
In 2024, we completed a new strategic plan, focusing on five key pillars: inspiration, landscapes, knowledge, community and excellence, which you will see reflected in this edition of the magazine. As a capstone to this process, we welcomed a group of distinguished Honorary Advisors — respected leaders from botanical gardens and arboreta across the country. Their insights have been invaluable, offering fresh ideas to help us strengthen horticulture, earned revenue, guest experience, and community engagement. Their guidance inspires us to innovate and ensure that HF&G remains a vibrant hub for learning, wonder and connection.
Guests enjoyed more than 50 unforgettable exhibits and events. Highlights included the Pollinator Express train exhibit and the rare total solar eclipse at Holden Arboretum, as well as Life in One Cubic Foot and Orchids Forever at Cleveland Botanical Garden. Frost debuted at the Botanical Garden, delighting over 52,000 visitors with expanded whimsical displays, seasonal botanicals and illuminated spaces.
HF&G researchers were busier than ever, resulting in the publication of over 19 peer-reviewed papers — a new HF&G record — highlighting their critical role in advancing scientific
knowledge for the preservation of the natural world. Our scientists also secured a record amount of grant funding to help enhance forest health in our region.
Generous donor support enabled significant garden renovations. At Holden Arboretum, we continued improvements at Logsdon Pond, The Whitney Garden, the Rhododendron Discovery Garden and the Norweb Tree Allee through strategic plantings. At Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Hershey Children’s Garden welcomed a remodeled treehouse with enhanced access and playful features designed to spark curiosity in our youngest visitors.
The year also brought unexpected challenges. In August, storms damaged 148 trees at Holden Arboretum, resulting in significant cleanup costs. In our time of need, more than 400 donors stepped up to help, contributing nearly $70,000 toward the restoration effort.
We closed the year with our annual fundraising event, Harvest Moon, at Cleveland Botanical Garden. Over 400 guests joined us for this food-focused celebration, featuring some of Cleveland’s most accomplished chefs who created a collaborative roving meal across the campus. The event raised more than $171,000 in support of our mission.
On behalf of the entire HF&G team, thank you for your continued support and belief in our mission. We look forward to welcoming you back in the year ahead and building on the successes of 2024.
With gratitude and excitement for the future,
Ed Moydell President & CEO

a large-scale bee-themed maze. These updates create a vibrant space for children and families to connect, discover, and play.
Tucked near the eastern entrance of the Wildflower Garden at Holden Arboretum, the Whitney Garden is a hidden gem. Established in 1998 in memory of Ann McGean Whitney, it was designed as a serene space to appreciate nature’s beauty, featuring a colorful perennial bed, a welcoming pergola, and a bench for quiet reflection.
In 2024, the garden marked its 26th year with a thoughtful refresh thanks to the generous support of Ann and Dick Whitney. Staying true to its original vision, the updates introduced native and strikingly beautiful plants like eastern redbud, magnolia varieties, lilac, blue grama grass and rhododendron. Horticulturalists also reworked the garden’s layout, trimming overgrowth and relocating plants to make room for these additions. A new pergola, set to be installed in 2025, will further enhance this cherished space. We invite you to experience the Whitney Garden’s renewed charm on your next visit to Holden Arboretum.
CONSERVE AND RESTORE
Healthy forests take work, but HF&G biologists are up to the task.
When the Holden Arboretum was founded nearly a century ago, the protection of natural areas was all about preservation. To keep a forest healthy, simply don’t cut down the trees. Over the decades that followed, more “don’ts” were added to the conservationist’s list: don’t litter, don’t pollute — but the idea remained that the healthiest forest was one untouched by humans.
That was then. Today, the influence of humans on the landscape is allencompassing, and there’s no such thing as a forest “untouched” by humans. Invasive pests and diseases threaten entire tree species, with American elm, eastern hemlock and American beech at risk — while many areas haven’t hosted a healthy ash in years. Forest understories are filled in with invasive shrubs, choking out native plants and altering wildlife habitats. Meanwhile, the changing climate threatens to exacerbate these declines.
A forest unmanaged by humans is no longer healthy; intervention is needed. Pairing rigorous scientific study and collaboration with the public, the biologists in Holden Forests & Gardens’ Research and Community Forestry departments are leading the charge in conserving and restoring healthy forests in our region.
A HUB FOR WOODLAND OWNERS
For seven years, the Working Woods Learning Forest at Holden Arboretum has served as both a demonstration of best practices in forest management as well as a living laboratory. In this 67-acre forest, Holden scientists test the efficacy of different woodland management techniques, while visiting woodland owners can see these strategies in action through workshops, field days and other programs.
Last March, HF&G was awarded $1.8 million from the USDA Forest Service to expand Working Woods into a larger program directly supporting landowners. The new Working Woods
Hub equips small woodlot owners (up to 2,500 acres) in the Great Lakes region with guidance on climate-smart forest management practices that help meet their property goals through both education and direct assistance.
“Over 80% of Ohio’s forested land is privately owned, and most folks want to do the right thing for their land but don’t know where to start — that's where we come in,” says Becah Troutman, Working Woods Hub Manager. “When we consider what the landowner's goals are and what is best for the land, we can come up with a plan that is a win-win.”
Three new hires, Troutman; Anna Carlson, Working Woods Outreach Coordinator; and Annie Weight, Forestry Outreach Fellow, are already developing the new educational programming alongside Holden’s veteran Community Forestry Team. In addition, this grant will support the design of a new consulting forestry program, which will directly assist
landowners with services such as land management plans, including long-time Working Woods Steward, Jessica Miller-Mecaskey. The grant also supports a new effort within the Holden Seed Bank, launched in 2023, to provide seeds and saplings of native, locally-adapted trees for reforestation.
Meanwhile Holden’s researchers continue their scientific study into the beneficial impacts of management on the forest. In November, they published a report in Forest Ecology and Management showing that combining selective overstory thinning with nonnative shrub removal improves native woody seedling establishment. The team will continue tracking the ecological responses to various management actions, ensuring that the landowners receive sound, science-based guidance.
“I truly believe this hub can make a difference in our region for healthy, resilient forests through the collaboration and partnerships this hub connects,” Troutman says.
THE FIGHT AGAINST FOREST PESTS
Just up the road from Working Woods, you’ll find the headquarters for another far-reaching initiative: the Great Lakes Basin Forest Health Collaborative (GLBFHC). Since its launch in 2021, the program has united researchers and forestry professionals across the region to save ash, eastern hemlock and American beech, each threatened by invasive pests. Last March, the Collaborative added American elm to the project.
Members of the GLBFHC work together to find wild trees that may be resistant to these pests, test them, breed them and create a supply of naturally pest-resistant trees for reforestation. Last year, new ash experiments led by GLBFHC partners and assisted by The Nature Conservancy’s Tree Species in Peril program took root in five states, alongside a new American beech research planting at the Arboretum. Reports of potentially resistant “lingering” trees continue to come in, including 160 new ash sightings last year. And with a new partnership
with Adventure Scientists, trained volunteers are searching for lingering hemlock in National Forests across six states. So far, they have already met their goal of having 750 observations.
Scientific research at HF&G feeds into the collaborative as well. Teams in the David Burke and Katie Stuble labs are developing new propagation techniques for eastern hemlock, studying the effects of diseaseassociated nematodes on American beech, and monitoring forests infected with beech leaf disease to understand large-scale impacts.
Rachel Kappler, forest health coordinator for the GLBFHC, serves as liaison between the Collaborative’s 310 partners and counting. She hosts workshops, gives talks and coordinates efforts of all these disparate groups to move the collective forward.
“The GLBFHC has been progressing very well, and our funding was recently extended,” says Kappler. “The future is looking green with growth.”
A forest unmanaged by humans is no longer healthy; intervention is needed. The biologists at HF&G are leading the charge in our region.
BUILDING THE COMMUNITY
Holden Forests & Gardens strengthens connections between people, plants and ecosystems.
As a science-based conservation organization and one of the largest public gardens in the country, HF&G empowers a new generation to tackle pressing environmental problems. Through a unique blend of cutting-edge science and on-the-ground application programs like Green Corps, research internships and Tree Corps, we foster careers that positively impact communities and the environment. By providing skills, mentorship and career exploration opportunities through hands on experiences, HF&G strengthens connections between people, plants and ecosystems while shaping the next generation of green industry leaders.
GREEN CORPS
The Green Corps program introduces high school students to green industry careers through hands-on learning and mentorship, fostering both professional and personal growth. In 2024, 24 interns participated in college and career readiness workshops, and departmental placements. Since the program’s reenvisioning in 2021, participants have contributed over 9,000 hours to the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Holden Arboretum. To date,
Green Corps has supported 47 interns, equipping them with the skills and experiences needed to create meaningful environmental and community impact.
The program’s mission extends beyond professional development — it aims to empower participants to connect with themselves, their communities and the environment. As recent Green Corps graduate Kiera H. advises, “Say yes to everything. Because whether you like something or not, you’ve learned about yourself. Every experience, whether it’s awful or amazing, can bring you closer to realizing your passion. Green Corps is a program designed to support you on your journey, professionally and personally.”
This ethos of self-discovery and community connection inspires participants to explore their passions and apply environmentally conscious practices in their careers and lives. Reflecting on her own journey, Kiera shares, “My goal is to foster a greater understanding of our place within the global ecosystem. I hope to inspire others to embrace a more regenerative approach to social and economic systems.” Programs like Green Corps empower young people
to forge these connections and create lasting, positive change for both their communities and the planet.
RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS
The summer research internship program provides aspiring scientists with a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on research across the Arboretum’s 3,600 acres of forests, laboratories, and diverse plant collections. This 12-week program emphasizes key scientific skills such as experimental design, data analysis and science communication. It fosters professional growth through workshops, networking opportunities, field trips, and exposure to the nonprofit sector. The program culminates in a presentation at HF&G’s annual SEARCH (Symposium for Ecological Research) symposium, which in 2024 set a record for both presenters and member attendees. This year, 17 college and high school interns participated in this immersive experience, gaining the tools to excel in plant and environmental sciences.
Kiera Hale, Green Corps alumni
Beyond developing technical and professional skills, the internship promotes a collaborative mindset to address pressing environmental challenges. Rory S., a former HF&G Research Intern, is now completing her PhD in Plant Biology and Conservation at Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanic Garden. Reflecting on her time as an HF&G intern, Rory described the program as the “backbone of her career in plant sciences.” She credited the encouragement from mentors and peers to approach problems with creativity, confidence and determination as one of the program’s most valuable aspects. Rory shared how this formative experience laid the groundwork for a career dedicated to making meaningful contributions to the scientific community:
By equipping me with the tools and confidence to tackle challenges in our rapidly changing world, the Holden Arboretum experience empowered me to push boundaries and work toward solutions that benefit both ecosystems and society.
This program exemplifies HF&G’s commitment to shaping the next generation of scientists and addressing critical environmental issues through research, collaboration, and innovation.
TREE CORPS
The Tree Corps program addresses environmental justice and urban forestry by training Northeast Ohio residents in arboriculture and tree care. Originally established as a workforce development initiative, it has since evolved into the Tree Corps CREW (Cleveland-Region Experiential Work) program, streamlining its focus on key areas
that create lasting impact. Over eight weeks, participants receive classroom training and hands-on field experience, gaining expertise in horticulture, landscaping and natural resources through partnerships with respected local organizations. Beyond imparting technical skills, the program works to expand the tree canopy in Northeast Ohio by fostering community engagement and education, while simultaneously unlocking economic opportunities. By providing participants with practical skills, Tree Corps CREW empowers them to make a tangible difference in their communities and supports entrepreneurial ventures in fields such as tree care, and horticulture.
For many alumni, the impact of the program extends well beyond the training period. Julia W., for example, shared how Tree Corps introduced her to best practices and a broad range of career paths in the green industry. Inspired by her passion for community advocacy and the need for flexible employment as a parent, Julia pursued entrepreneurship. She focused on filling a critical gap in tree establishment and care in her neighborhood, noting,
"I wanted to see the trees planted in my neighborhood survive the establishment period. Tree Corps taught me the importance of caring for trees once planted, not just walking away."
Through connections with other small business owners made during the program, Julia was able to open doors to future opportunities and solidify her commitment to tree establishment work — a passion sparked by witnessing resources wasted on poorly maintained plantings. Reflecting on her experience, she expressed deep gratitude for the program's mentorship and guidance from dedicated professionals, recognizing it as the foundation for her fulfilling entrepreneurial career in the green industry.
Holden Forests & Gardens empowers individuals through programs like Green Corps, research internships, and Tree Corps, fostering careers that positively impact communities and the environment. By providing skills, mentorship, and opportunities, HF&G strengthens connections between people, plants, and ecosystems while shaping the next generation of green industry leaders.

SPRING EXHIBITS
The Nature of Healing
Opens Saturday, April 5 at the Cleveland Botanical Garden
Free for members, included with admission for nonmembers
Co-curated with and presented by
The Nature of Healing is a group art exhibition featuring around 20 artists from Cleveland. Co-curated with and presented by Deep Roots Gallery, this exhibition focuses on grief and mental health and utilizing green spaces such as Cleveland Botanical Garden as healing spaces in the community.
Cleveland, historically challenged by some of the highest crime rates in the nation and recently identified as the most stressed city in the country, presents a fertile ground for artistic inquiry. This poses the question to creatives “What is the relationship between nature and the grief of trauma?” This show seeks to unravel the complex interplay between natural elements and the emotional landscapes shaped by trauma and mourning. The goal of the exhibit is to dig even further to explore what it means to utilize art and natural spaces as tools to support mental and health and healthy communities.
An artful exploration of nature’s lines, rhythm and movement
Opens Saturday, May 10 at the Holden Arboretum
Free for members, included with admission for nonmembers
Forest Forms features 18 sculptures ranging in height from a playful five feet to a monumental 20 feet tall. These larger-than-life works include a majestic fox family, an intricate stack of flowers, an ethereal peacock, and much more.
Artist Huelani Mei begins her creative process with a simple sketch. An avid nature lover, Mei’s line work style conveys the form, movement and rhythm she observes in nature. In her shop, Mei turns the sketch into a tiny maquette made from pencil steel, measuring just a few inches in size. This maquette is used to hone the lines and angles that are eventually fabricated into the full-scale, powdercoated sculpture.
Please join us for an exhibition opening eventcheck holdenfg.org for details and tickets!
