To Dayton AND BEYOND
Gear up for top-flight family fun in the Birthplace of Aviation as you visit these must-see attractions to learn about Dayton’s defining role in aviation history.
Start your trip at the free National Museum of the United States Air Force™, the world’s largest military aviation museum. Explore 19-plus acres of indoor exhibit space with over 350 aerospace vehicles, including 10 presidential aircraft, four of which you can walk through. Be sure to also visit the free co-located National Aviation Hall of Fame and take the family on an unforgettable ride on the flight simulators. Kids can explore engaging exhibits and educational programs.
Carillon Historical Park is home to the Wright Brothers National Museum, which holds the most Wright brothers’ artifacts on display in the world, including the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, the only airplane designated a National Historic Landmark. Explore a replica of the Wright bicycle shop, where the brothers got their start. Carillon Historical Park itself encompasses 65 acres of indoor and outdoor exhibits that celebrate Dayton’s history and how the city changed the world through inventions like the airplane, the automobile self-starter and the cash register, among many others.
Did you know Dayton also has a national park? Established in 1992, the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park takes visitors
to several sites around Dayton, including the Wright Brothers National Museum, the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center (which also includes the Aviation Trail Parachute Museum) and Wright Cycle Shop, Huffman Prairie Interpretive Center and Wright Brothers Memorial, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, Orville Wright’s mansion Hawthorn Hill and the Paul Laurence Dunbar House historic site. Together these sites tell the story of the Wright brothers and Dayton’s aviation legacy, as well as highlighting their friend, noted African American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Kids will love the Junior Ranger program!
Many of these sites are also part of the National Aviation Heritage Area (NAHA) , which encompasses locations across an eight-county area in Ohio. The aviation sites are all within a short drive of one another. Don’t miss the Wright “B” Flyer look-alike — the Wright brothers’ first massproduced aircraft.

The River Brings Us Together
From quiet morning walks to vibrant riverfront festivals, the Great Miami River connects our communities — and the Miami Conservancy District keeps it safe, clean, and thriving.
Our system of dams, levees, and conservation land safeguards the entire Miami Valley — protecting homes, businesses, and the outdoor spaces that make our region thrive. We also work every day to protect water quality and preserve the landscapes that define Southwest Ohio.
Together, we’re protecting the region we call home.
