A CENTURY OF SMILES

When William H. “Boss” Hoover dedicated the Community Building YMCA to North Canton in 1923, he hailed it as a “club for the town, open to the pleasure and benefit of men, women and children of North Canton. Every want and desire of the community, along with social, education and physical training, will be cared for here.”

Now, 100 years later, the Y continues to evolve with the community, but its dedication to providing everyone — regardless of age, income or background — with the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive remains the same.

“The one thing that hasn’t changed is the support from the community and the Y’s reputation as a community gathering place,” says Ben Wheeler, vice president of operations. “It continues to serve its mission. People see their friends and neighbors more at the Y than on the street. It’s a safe and healthy place, and the community has always been responsive to that.”

The YMCA celebrated this tremendous milestone with a rededication ceremony in February. Larry Hoover, great-grandson of “Boss” Hoover, kicked off the festivities. Throughout the rest of the year, the YMCA will feature monthly centurythemed activities and challenges, as well as a gala on Sept. 16. A historical timeline with photos and fun facts about the Y over the last 100 years is also on display on the main level of the North Canton Community Building — stop in and say hello!

New to North Canton

This spring, Las Vegas pastry chef Elisabeth Park opened her first shop, Stuffed Pastry, on South Main Street. Cases are filled with a wide selection of confections, cakes and cookies, from delicate cannoli to rich cream puffs and elegant eclairs. Have an appetite for a slice? Check out Park Street Pizza on South Main Street, where the “pie-losophy” is to use farm-fresh and locally grown ingredients whenever possible to strengthen the economy with every pizza that comes out of the shop’s ovens.

Meijer opened at the former Kmart site on Fulton Drive and includes a 12-pump gas station and 155,000-square-foot supercenter. The store expects to hire about 300 team members. Meanwhile, a portion of the closed Fishers Food store on Cleveland Avenue N.W. will become a new Aldi, the seventh in Stark County, due to open with a renovated exterior.

Pav’s Creamery has been an Ohio favorite for sweet scoops since 1969 and also operates a food truck for catering parties and events of all sizes. Another real treat? Waggoner Chocolates is a homegrown business that started humbly in 1922 and now produces more than 100 varieties of bulk and individually wrapped chocolates and seasonal confections. For a more savory bite, The Howlin Bird on South Main Street is a local-favorite chicken tender spot with various sides, salads and other hand-helds — including double-patty burgers — plus a generous craft beer menu.

Gervasi Vineyard recently opened The Cave and The Spa to provide even more ways for guests to experience the wine resort property. The underground Cave includes a dedicated wine tasting room, tours and barrel storage. The Spa offers stunning vineyard views and a tranquil getaway to relax and rejuvenate with a full menu of services. “With these new features, along with our restaurants and boutique shopping at the Marketplace, you can really make an entire day or weekend out of it,” says Andrea Hartman, marketing director.

Meanwhile, North Canton is also a destination for higher education thanks to Walsh University, a nationally recognized Catholic university providing traditional and online degree programs to 2,450 students from 37 states and 24 countries. The military-friendly institution’s flagship areas of study include health sciences, business and education.

BRIGHTER TOMORROW

Construction is well underway on the new primary and intermediate school buildings that will replace the five currently in use by the North Canton City School District.

The “PK2” preschool through second grade building on Charlotte Street is 100,000+ square feet and will elevate the learning environment with technology efficiencies, flexible multi-purpose spaces and a design that fosters collaboration. The intermediate school on East Maple Street is 100,000+ square feet and will house about 900 students. Both new schools are due to open for the 2023–24 school year as LEED Silver Certified, high-performance green buildings.

The district also recently opened a new transportation center for roughly 50 buses along with the reimagined North Canton Memorial Stadium, featuring a 3,500-seat grandstand, more accessible seating, an expanded press box and roof.

“We’ve been busy here,” says Superintendent Jeff Wendorf, noting that the district educates about 4,500 students. “The chamber, city and school district share a great partnership — and our residents support great schools, a great city and great businesses.”
