LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

A Historic Achievement for Our Chamber and Community

As President and CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, I am thrilled to share a milestone that stands as a testament to over a century of service, dedication, and leadership—our Chamber has received 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for the first time in our organization’s 100+ year history.

This elite honor is awarded to only the top 2% of chambers nationwide and recognizes organizations that demonstrate excellence in leadership, sound governance, impactful programming, and visionary planning. To be named among the best of the best is not only a proud moment—it’s truly historic for our Chamber and our region.

Achieving this designation required months of intensive work and collaboration by our incredible Chamber staff and our Board of Directors, who meticulously documented and evaluated every facet of our operations, from financial integrity to member engagement and policy advocacy. Their commitment to excellence made this possible.

So why does this matter? Because this isn’t just a win for the Chamber—it’s a win for our entire community. A 5-Star Accreditation strengthens our ability to advocate for local businesses, attract investment, support workforce development, and elevate Sarasota’s voice at the state and national levels. It shows that Sarasota is not just a beautiful place to live—it’s a community of innovation, integrity, and impact.

This achievement honors our past and empowers our future. To our members, partners, staff, and board—thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we’ve made history.

With heartfelt appreciation,

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Sarasota Chamber Earns Elite 5-Star Accreditation: A Testament to Continuous Excellence and Community Leadership

It is with immense pride and profound gratitude that we announce the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce has achieved the prestigious 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This is the highest designation a local chamber can earn, placing us among an elite group of only 149 chambers out of approximately 7,000 nationwide – a true testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence.

This remarkable achievement isn’t just a recognition of where we stand today; it’s a powerful affirmation of our relentless pursuit of excellence. Having previously achieved a 4-Star designation in 2022, our progression to 5-Star reflects a tireless dedication to honing our craft, refining our operations, and consistently exceeding expectations in serving our members and community. The rigorous, months-long review process, which scrutinizes everything from governance and financial management to our advocacy and programming, underscores the collaborative spirit and tireless work of our dedicated staff and board.

The work performed in pursuit of our 5th Star empowers us to tackle the significant issues which will shape Sarasota’s future. As a leading voice for businesses and a trusted community partner, we are committed to driving meaningful change. Our focus remains sharply on critical challenges such as developing sustainable workforce housing solutions. Sarasota County has 47,000 households spending more than 30% of their income on housing, disproportionately affecting essential workers like teachers, nurses, and service staff. We are actively supporting initiatives that have already brought over 900 attainable units into the pipeline through city incentives and public-private partnerships.

We are also deeply engaged in the upcoming revisioning of the downtown master plan for the City of Sarasota. The current Downtown Master Plan 2020 was instrumental in revitalizing our urban core after the Great Recession, simplifying zoning, and fostering growth. Now, a new committee is undertaking a two-year process to develop its next iteration, and we are advocating for policies that foster innovation, economic vitality, and a vibrant urban core for generations to come. This includes supporting thoughtful development, like the recent approval for the Mira Mar Plaza, which balances historic preservation with necessary growth, and exploring new “Urban Mixed-Use” classifications to encourage attainable housing with density bonuses along commercial corridors.

This accreditation is a stamp of excellence, reinforcing our role as an indispensable ally in navigating the complexities of local governance and championing the interests of our business community. We are more resolute than ever in our mission to foster a pro-business environment and ensure Sarasota remains a dynamic and prosperous place to live, work, and invest.

Ambassador OF THE

JESSLYNNEQUAKKELAAR

Jesslynne Quakkelaar was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While attending Grand Valley State University pursuing a Human Resources Degree, she started her career at Lake Michigan Credit Union. Her career led her down a different path than HR into Retail Branch banking. She loves helping her members achieve financial success.

In 2022, Jesslynne helped the Florida branch teams assimilate to LMCU when they acquired a bank in Central Florida. That is when she fell in love with the Sarasota area. She quickly reached out to the COO of Florida and stated her intentions of moving to the area when there was an opportunity.

Seven months later she was opening the doors of the LMCU Downtown Sarasota Branch as the Branch Manager. Her role was to share the LMCU brand, grow the membership and help members achieve their dreams. She quickly joined the Sarasota Chamber and soon after became an Ambassador. As an Ambassador she helps onboard new members and has become a familiar face to many in the Sarasota area. Jesslynne attributes much of her success to the time she has spent as Ambassador of the Chamber meeting and mentoring many business leaders.

Summer Internships Launch Fifth Year OFA

The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce has officially kicked off its fifth annual Opportunities for All (OFA) Summer Internship Program, marking a major milestone in its mission to strengthen our local talent pipeline.

This year, 30 exceptional high school and college students have been paired with 18 top regional employers for a dynamic, hands-on professional experience. Designed to build bridges between education and career, OFA provides paid, meaningful internships that not only prepare young professionals for the workforce, but also help local businesses discover and nurture future leaders.

“The enthusiasm from both our student applicants and host employers has been truly inspiring,” said Melanie Lavender, OFA Program Manager. “We’ve matched a remarkable group of young professionals with organizations eager to mentor and develop their skills. We look forward to seeing the incredible impact they will undoubtedly make this summer and in their future careers.”

This year’s participating employers span industries such as technology, healthcare, marketing, and nonprofit management, offering interns a wide range of career exploration opportunities. Through a thoughtful matching process, each student has been placed with a host organization that aligns with their academic goals and professional interests.

Over the coming weeks, interns will dive into impactful projects, attend Chamber-led professional development workshops, and participate in networking events designed to elevate their career readiness.

Since its launch, OFA has not only created transformative experiences for students—it’s helped cultivate lasting connections across the Sarasota community.
