LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Heart of Sarasota: Celebrating Our Small Businesses

As the President and CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, I am proud to champion the small businesses that form the backbone of our community. In Sarasota, small businesses are more than an economic engine—they are the heart and soul of our city, bringing innovation, resilience, and a deep sense of connection to the people who live and work here.

Each year, we recognize the outstanding contributions of these businesses through the Frank G. Berlin, Sr. Sarasota Business Awards, a prestigious event that highlights the best and brightest in our community. This year, we invite you to join us on Friday, June 20th at The Ora Ballroom for an inspiring luncheon celebrating the small businesses that make Sarasota thrive.

With ten award categories, the Sarasota Business Awards recognize excellence in areas such as innovation, community impact, and business growth. To be named a finalist for one of these awards is a mark of distinction—one that reflects hard work, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Past recipients have not only elevated their brands but have also gained new opportunities and connections that propel their businesses forward.

I encourage you to attend this year’s event, whether to celebrate your peers, network with fellow business leaders, or simply be inspired by the remarkable stories of perseverance and success. Together, we can continue to support and uplift the small businesses that shape Sarasota’s future.

Reserve your seat today and be part of this incredible celebration! Visit SarasotaChamber.com for more details.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

A Season of Action and Opportunity

It has been an exciting 6 months to represent you as Chair of the Board. I’m thrilled to share updates on the Chamber’s dynamic activity and upcoming events.

We’ve been actively advocating for our members’ interests. February’s Legislative Fly-In to Tallahassee was a resounding success, where, thanks to the diligent efforts of our Government Issues Council, we effectively advocated for our members’ top priorities, ensuring our collective voice resonated with our state representatives. Reinforcing our commitment to strong local policy advocacy, we are pleased to welcome Marlon Brown as our new Director of Government Affairs. Marlon’s expertise will be instrumental in driving our efforts to address critical issues facing our business community. On the local policy front, the Chamber is actively engaged in addressing critical traffic and other infrastructure challenges. We are committed to lead constructive community discussions and promoting proactive solutions, moving beyond a “blame the new arrival” mindset. Our goal is to foster long term sustainable growth and enhance the quality of life for all Sarasota residents.

Looking ahead, we have a packed calendar designed to foster connections and celebrate our vibrant business community. Mark your calendars for these key events:

• Annual Golf Classic: Join us on April 28, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM at The Founders Golf Club for a day of networking and friendly competition.

Celebrating Community and Connection: A Recap of the Party on the Bay

With the Sarasota Bay as our backdrop, this year’s Party on the Bay, presented by HH Staffing, was a night to remember. Members gathered for a lively evening of networking, incredible food from local restaurants, and top-tier entertainment that brought the Aloha & Fiesta theme to life. From vibrant performances to exciting interactive experiences, the energy was high, and the connections were plenty.

The event also highlighted our Chamber member businesses, creating opportunities for collaboration in

a setting that was both engaging and unforgettable. As one attendee put it, “The venue was wonderful, and the entire event was so much fun!”

Party on the Bay transformed traditional networking into a fun and engaging experience. A huge thank you to our sponsors for making this event possible.

Thank you to all of our sponsors who made this event possible!

NEW YEAR’S KICK- OFF BRUNCH

The Chamber welcomed the new year with its annual New Year’s Kick-Off Brunch on Friday, January 17, presented by Shumaker at the stunning Ora. This signature event brought together business leaders and community members to celebrate the year ahead and discuss key opportunities for growth in our region.

We were honored to host Mark Wilson, President & CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, as our keynote speaker. His insights into Florida’s economic future provided valuable perspectives on the opportunities and challenges shaping our business community.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2025 Spirit of Sarasota Award, sponsored by HH Staffing, to Matt Walsh, Founder and CEO of Observer Media Group. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding dedication to the Sarasota community, and Walsh’s contributions have left a lasting impact.

Additionally, the Chamber was proud to announce that former City Manager Marlon Brown will be joining the team as Director of Government Affairs Brown’s extensive experience and leadership will further strengthen the Chamber’s advocacy efforts.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our sponsors for making this event possible and to all who attended. Here’s to a successful and prosperous year ahead for the Chamber and its members.

What’s the best piece of professional advice you have been given?

One of the most valuable pieces of advice I’ve received is to say “yes” to as many new opportunities as possible while maintaining professionalism and strong relationships. Every challenge presents a chance to learn, grow, and expand my skill set.

Additionally, I’ve learned that maintaining positive relationships and never burning bridges is crucial in any industry—especially construction, where collaboration and trust drive success.

What’s your favorite thing about Sarasota?

Sarasota’s location is unbeatable. I love being near the water, enjoying the coastal lifestyle, and taking advantage of everything the area has to offer. It’s a unique place where professional growth and an amazing quality of life go hand in hand. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

2024 Evaluation Summary

CAREER EDGE 2024 Evaluation

CareerEdge continues to make a lasting impact on our regional workforce, equipping employees with skills that lead to higher wages, job promotions, and economic mobility. The 2024 evaluation highlights the significant return on investment in workforce training, showcasing how increased earnings and job creation contribute to the broader economy. With $2.1 million in additional annual earnings translating into a total economic impact of $3.1 million, CareerEdge is not only transforming individual careers but also strengthening our local economy.

The annual earnings gained represent the estimated income gains for one year of full-time employment at the average hourly wage gain per trainee. However, the total economic impact for the area is greater than the trainees’ annual income due to the additional economic activity generated from increased earnings. The U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Economic Analysis provides direct effect multipliers by industry to estimate the total economic output of changes in earnings and employment.

The total economic impact of nearly $2.1 million dollars in increased earnings is roughly equivalent to $3.1 million dollars

Additionally, the 117 new jobs created equate to approximately 213 new employment opportunities in the regional economy, further fueling growth and sustainability for businesses and workers alike.

Building Bridges To Opportunity

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM THE OFA

As summer approaches, so does an incredible opportunity for young professionals in Sarasota to gain hands-on experience in the workplace. The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce’s Opportunities For All (OFA) Summer Internship Program is back for its fifth year, offering an enriching pathway for interns and businesses alike.

From June 2 to July 25, 2025, selected interns will embark on an eight-week journey, gaining exposure to real-world business environments while local companies benefit from the fresh perspectives of diverse talent. Applications are now open, with a deadline of May 16 for interested candidates.

The success of last year’s program speaks for itself—30 minority interns were paired with 19 local businesses, each placement carefully aligned with the intern’s academic background and career aspirations. This initiative is more than just a summer job; it’s a stepping stone toward long-term professional success. Interns engage in valuable networking, develop key workplace skills, and experience the professional world firsthand.

For local employers, the OFA Summer Internship Program presents an opportunity to invest in the future workforce while valuing all people within their companies. Businesses that participate gain motivated interns eager to contribute, learn, and make an impact.

Fully funded through the Opportunities For All grant by the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, this program ensures that finances are never a barrier to participation. Interns receive compensation, making this initiative truly accessible to those who need it most.

As the workforce landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like OFA play a pivotal role in closing opportunity gaps, fostering community growth, and strengthening Sarasota’s business ecosystem. If you’re a student eager to take the next step in your career—or a business looking to mentor the next generation of leaders—this is your chance.

Apply today and be part of a program that’s shaping Sarasota’s future, one internship at a time.

LEADERSHIP SARASOTA IN ACTION

Leadership is about growth, transformation, and the courage to embrace change. That sentiment was at the heart of the 2025 Leadership Sarasota Educational Conference, held on Friday, January 31st. Attendees left inspired, armed with fresh insights and a renewed sense of purpose thanks to a lineup of dynamic speakers who challenged and motivated us to think bigger.

Kate Leavell kicked off the day with a powerful keynote on adaptability and resilience in leadership. Robyn Faucy followed with strategic insights on driving meaningful change, and Brett Morris closed the conference with a motivational session on perseverance and purpose-driven leadership.

As we reflect on the lessons and connections made at this year’s conference, one thing is clear: Leadership Sarasota continues to be a catalyst for growth, inspiring individuals to step forward with confidence, lead with intention, and make a lasting impact.

A heartfelt thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, Williams Parker Attorneys at Law, and all our sponsors for making this event possible. Your support fuels leadership growth in our community!

SYNOVUS

What is the biggest leadership lesson you have learned?

Listen, listen, listen. Value opinions and viewpoints. Solicit and nurture recommendations and resolutions to drive buy-in. Your most valuable asset is your people. A strong, healthy perpetuating culture drives winning results.

What is one piece of business advice you would give to local entrepreneurs?

Align yourself and your business with trusted, knowledgeable advisors. Welcome their challenging questions and suggestions. Business owners should also create an annual budget, set projections with assumptions that are updated at least quarterly, and conduct a cash flow projection monthly.

Are there any exciting developments happening in your company?

Synovus is coming off a solid year of financial performance, growth and stability while investing in best-in-class payment solutions, liquidity management and fraud deterrent / detection services. Greenwich has consistently recognized

us as a top-performing bank in this space. We’re focused on growth in the southeast, especially Florida, having recently announced increased hiring of commercial relationship managers.

What do you love the most about Sarasota?

During my career, I moved 9 times in 11 years and have worked in markets from Toronto to Miami. Sarasota is a diverse market and wonderful place to live, work, raise a family and retire. Sarasota offers the best healthcare, access to a great international airport, some of the best beaches in the country, nearly every conceivable sport and recreation activity, great restaurants and an outstanding performing arts community. We’re supported by great community organizations and home to the #1 ranked Chamber in Florida for which I’m proud be a Board Director.

KERKERING, BARBERIO & CO.

Biggest Leadership Lesson:

One of the most important leadership lessons I’ve learned over the years is the power of listening and curiosity. Truly listening—not just waiting for your turn to respond—allows you to understand different perspectives, support your team, and help others find their own solutions. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about creating an environment where people can grow in their careers and businesses. Curiosity plays a key role in this—when you stay open to new ideas and different approaches, you invite innovation and continuous improvement. Presuming you already have the answer can limit opportunities for growth and progress.

What is one piece of business advice you would give to local entrepreneurs?

Focus on what you do best! Prioritize how your business meets the needs of your customers, and commit to delivering world-class service. One of the best things any business owner can do is build a network within their industry, especially with those who aren’t direct competitors. There’s so much to learn from others who have been in your shoes, navigated similar challenges, and can offer valuable

insights. Surrounding yourself with experienced professionals can make all the difference in your growth and success.

Are there any exciting developments happening in your company?

Absolutely—KB is on the MOVE! After 53 years in Sarasota and two decades in our current space, we’re excited to relocate just down the block to 1605 Main Street in 2025.

Our new office will feature modern technology, improved amenities, and convenient parking to better serve our clients. For now, it’s business as usual at our current location (1990 Main Street, 8th floor) through the 2024 tax season and until summer 2025.

We can’t wait for this next chapter while continuing to provide the same dedicated service. Follow us for updates as we get closer to moving day!
