Well… hello 2025! As we close the chapter of 2024 and move into a brand-new year, I am filled with hope and optimism for the year ahead. Our staff, board of directors, and Chairman of the Board, Joe Hembree, look forward to new opportunities to serve our member businesses—the true economic engine of our community.
Our mission at the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is to cultivate Sarasota’s prosperity and quality of life for our member businesses. So how does the Chamber fulfill its mission?
1. It cares deeply about the needs, strengths, and desires of the business community and works diligently to address them.
2. We remain focused on creating cutting-edge programming. In 2025, we will bring a stellar lineup of meetings, events, and programs. Programs that connect people, inform, educate, and build a network of resources. Engage with one of our councils to connect more deeply with the Chamber and our members.
3. It works on policy and issues at all levels of government that promote a strong economy—tackling tough issues like affordable housing, insurance reform, transportation, and water quality. We are a strong voice to policymakers on issues affecting your business.
4. We will continue partnering with the Florida Chamber to host the Institute for Public Policy, informing individuals interested in running for office locally and beyond. We will host our annual trip to Tallahassee for the Florida Chamber’s Legislative Fly-In in February.
5. We address workforce and talent issues for our member businesses through CareerEdge, upskilling workers, creating fast-track programming, and providing regional data. Through Opportunities For All, we’ll invest in minority businesses with resources to grow and prosper.
6. It cares about community, ensuring our quality of life continues for businesses, families, and residents.
7. We will continue resourcing top-notch leaders through Leadership Sarasota and Young Professionals Group.
8. We assemble a championship team of individuals overseeing this organization through our board and staff.
Thank you for being a treasured member and believing in our work. Our board, staff, and I are here to serve you and look forward to a productive 2025.
Heather Kasten President/CEO
I am honored to reflect on the remarkable achievements of the past year and the opportunities that lie ahead in our 105th year of serving this incredible community. Building on a legacy of service, we celebrated milestones such as being named Florida Chamber of the Year by the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals and being recognized as one of the Top 3 Chambers in the nation by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our team and the commitment of our member businesses.
Looking forward, our focus remains on serving our members by fostering economic growth, creating connections, and delivering exceptional value. 2025 will be a pivotal year as our community continues its recovery from hurricanes Helene and Milton. Our goals include listening to our members, responding to their evolving needs, leveraging our partnerships, prioritizing superior customer service, and exploring innovative ways to help businesses continue to thrive.
Together, we will focus on building a stronger foundation for economic prosperity and ensuring Sarasota remains a vibrant place to live, work, and thrive. By supporting our member businesses, we contribute to the growth and resilience of the entire community, fostering opportunities for all. I am excited for what we can accomplish together in the year to come.
Joe Hembree Hembree & Associates, Inc. Chairman of the Board
The 104th Annual Meeting, presented by Shumaker, was a true celebration of leadership, achievement, and collaboration within the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.
This year, we proudly welcomed Joe Hembree, of Hembree & Associates, Inc., as our new Board Chair. We also extend our deepest gratitude to Teri Hansen, outgoing Chair, for her remarkable leadership and dedication over the past year.
A highlight of the event was recognizing Emily Walsh as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Chair’s Cup Award, honoring her significant contributions and inspiring service to our Chamber community.
Our keynote address from Kevin Mazeika, USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame inductee, offered an engaging perspective on the pursuit of excellence and the profound impact of mentorship in achieving success.
Thank you to our sponsors for their generosity and support in making this event a success: Kerkering, Barberio & Co., Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, Gulfside Bank, HH Staffing Services, CCAV Event Production & Rentals, The Bank of Tampa, Tommy’s Express Holdings, RITE Technology, SRQ Entertainment Company, and Smart Things For Events.
As we reflect on the successes of the past year, we are excited to move forward together, embracing new opportunities to strengthen and grow our vibrant Chamber community.
Special thanks to Tabor J Photo & Film LLC for capturing the event.
The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is proud to reflect on a year filled with recognition and success, marking 2024 as a milestone in our continued efforts to serve the Sarasota community.
The Chamber was honored to be named one of the Top 3 Chambers in the Nation (Major Cities Category) by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). This distinction highlights the Chamber’s innovative initiatives, such as the CareerEdge program, which has had a measurable impact on addressing workforce challenges in our region. Sarasota was the only Chamber in Florida to achieve this recognition.
At the state level, the Chamber was celebrated as the 2024 Florida Chamber of the Year by the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP). This award, in the $1 million-plus budget category, reflects the Chamber’s commitment to economic growth, community collaboration, and exceptional service to its members.
The Chamber’s communications efforts were also recognized with the 2024 FACP Outstanding Communications Award in the Membership Communications/Marketing Materials category.
This accolade shows the importance of connecting with members through impactful, professional, and engaging messaging.
Finally, the community’s voice honored the Chamber with the Platinum Award for Best Local Chamber in SRQ Magazine’s Best of SRQ Awards, demonstrating the trust and appreciation from businesses and residents alike.
These recognitions are a reflection of the collective efforts of our members, staff, board members and partners. As the Sarasota Chamber looks ahead to 2025, the focus remains on fostering innovation, advocating for businesses, and strengthening the region’s economic vitality. Together, we continue to build a brighter future for our community.
I am honored to be recognized as the Ambassador of the Quarter and to serve on the ambassador committee where I get to collaborate with a dedicated group of professionals who support our members and the vibrant Sarasota community!
For those I may not have had the pleasure of meeting yet, I am the Marketing & Sponsorship Director for The Mall at University Town Center where I lead marketing and sponsorship initiatives and community relations. The Mall at UTC is home to more than 140 sought-after stores and restaurants and offers an exciting lineup of family-friendly events and experiences.

Sarasota-Manatee
Leadership Year: 2024
How do you stay connected with area professionals?
These connections are vital, as they offer diverse perspectives and insights into the ongoing challenges and opportunities within the community.
What was the most impactful part of the Leadership Sarasota program?
I stay connected with area professionals through a variety of intentional efforts that span both formal and informal interactions. Networking events hosted by organizations like the Sarasota Chamber and other community-driven groups provide structured opportunities to engage with peers and leaders across industries. Beyond these events, I prioritize fostering meaningful relationships with my Leadership Sarasota classmates and other alumni.
The most impactful aspect of the Leadership Sarasota program was the opportunity to collaborate with a group of dynamic and diverse leaders on meaningful community projects. This experience went far beyond simply learning about leadership—it was a transformative journey that pushed me to think critically and creatively about addressing the needs of the community.

Our Adult & Youth Leadership Sarasota classes have been busy this quarter, participating in Arts & Culture Day and Communications & Community Impact Day at locations throughout our community!
On November 22, 2024, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce hosted Affordable Housing Summit 2.0 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital Auditorium, where leaders and experts came together to address one of our region’s most urgent challenges: affordable housing.
Key findings shared at the summit revealed the stark reality facing our community:
• Cost-Burdened Residents: 57% of surveyed young professionals spend over 30% of their income on housing, classifying them as “housing costburdened.”
• Economic Impact: 96% believe housing costs are negatively impacting Sarasota’s economy, with 62% considering relocation due to the high cost of living.
• Wage Gaps: Only 2 of Sarasota’s 10 most common occupations provide wages sufficient to afford a one-bedroom rental, and none can meet the income needed to buy a median-priced home.
• Skyrocketing Rents: Rental units in the $2,000–$2,499 range have increased by 396% since 2019, while affordable units under $1,500 have nearly disappeared.
The summit featured an esteemed panel of speakers sharing actionable strategies to address these challenges:
• Leveraging public land for affordable housing.
• Reforming zoning policies to increase density.
• Partnering with private-sector developers to accelerate progress.
By 2035, Sarasota will need nearly 14,000 additional affordable housing units to meet demand. Workforce housing remains a top priority, ensuring that young professionals and essential workers can live and thrive locally.
“Affordable housing is not just a housing issue; it’s a workforce and economic stability issue,” said Heather Kasten, President/CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.
This impactful event was made possible by generous sponsors: Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, CASL Inc., The Patterson Foundation, REALTOR® Association of Sarasota and Manatee, and Lakewood Ranch Communities. A heartfelt thank you to Sarasota Memorial Health Care System for hosting. Together, we are working to create solutions that preserve Sarasota’s vibrancy and sustainability for future generations.
John LaCivita President & CEO
WILLIS SMITH CONSTRUCTION, INC.
What is the biggest leadership lesson you have learned?
“The most valuable leadership lesson I’ve learned is to empower others. By creating a team-driven culture where employees feel supported, valued, and encouraged to grow, we achieve business success and foster an environment where individuals thrive and reach their full potential.”
What is one piece of business advice you would give to local entrepreneurs?
“Build and nurture strong relationships. Whether with your team, clients, or the community, meaningful connections foster trust, collaboration, and longterm success. Always prioritize giving back to the community that supports your business.”
Are there any exciting developments happening in your company?
“At Willis Smith, we are always moving forward. This year, I proudly assumed the role of CEO/President, marking a new chapter for our firm. We added two new shareholders, Rick Scherzer and Katie Kominos, whose leadership and community dedication
enhance our growth. Additionally, we’ve welcomed outstanding young talent with strong educational backgrounds, now learning the “Willis Smith way” to uphold our values and standards for the future.”
What do you love the most about Sarasota?
“Sarasota’s unique blend of cultural vibrancy, natural beauty, and a close-knit community makes it an incredible place to live and work. What I love most, however, are the amazing people at Willis Smith Construction and the clients we have the privilege to serve—they embody the spirit of Sarasota.”
“At Willis Smith, we are always moving forward.”
David Verinder
President SARASOTA MEMORIAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
As Sarasota Memorial approaches its 100th anniversary in 2025, we celebrate our shared history with the Sarasota Chamber, which recognized its own century of service a few years ago.
When Sarasota residents worked together to open a 32-bed hospital in 1925, local businesses stepped up to support the new facility. Over the decades, as the Chamber attracted and supported businesses to serve our growing community, Sarasota Memorial grew as well, expanding its staff, services and facilities.
Now, Sarasota Memorial is a comprehensive health system with two hospitals and an extensive network of urgent care and outpatient centers and physician offices. We are continually growing the meet local needs, most recently opening a freestanding ER to serve north county neighborhoods, and plans under way for new medical campuses in south Sarasota County. Most importantly, the system has been recognized nationally for its quality by multiple hospital rating organizations.
This national reputation for excellence helps attract businesses and employees considering relocating to the area. From young families drawn to SMH’s dedicated maternity, neonatal and pediatric services, to businesses seeking a new location near
high-quality care, SMH helps make the Suncoast region an appealing place to live and work.
Sarasota Memorial also is an economic engine that sustains thousands of jobs and supports local businesses. We are the largest employer in Sarasota County with more than 10,000 dedicated staff. At a time of national caregiver shortages, the health system serves as a training ground for the next generation of clinicians, providing medical residency and educational programs that bring new physicians and nurses to the region.
Though much has changed in the past 100 years, one thing remains constant: our team’s commitment to the health of our community, and the unwavering support of local residents and businesses. We look forward to working together to serve the region for decades to come.
Catie Griggs President of Business Operations Baltimore Orioles
What is one piece of business advice you would give to local entrepreneurs?
“The one piece of advice I would give is take the time to really get to know your audience and to be intentional with whatever it is that you are doing. At the end of the day, your job is to serve your audience and give them a product or experience that leaves them wanting more. It is important to know what they are seeing, feeling, and experiencing to be able to deliver them the product with the most value.”
Are there any exciting developments happening in your company?
“I think one thing that makes working in sports so special is that there is always something exciting developing. Right now, specifically, we are working on future updates and renovations to our home ballpark in Baltimore, which we are looking forward to sharing as soon as they are ready. We are also in the beginning phases of expanding our footprint here in Sarasota with a brand-new, state-of-theart player development center that we expect to be ready for Spring Training 2026. But the truth is, we are always looking for ways to improve our fan experience and create new experiences for our
fans, which means there are usually some pretty awesome things being developed behind-thescenes.”
What do you love the most about Sarasota?
“First and foremost, all of the Orioles fans here. The support this community shows our organization and our players is tremendous and we are so grateful for them. Aside from the fans, the restaurants here are amazing. I’m looking forward to exploring Sarasota even more with my family over the coming months.”
