Greater Newport Annual Business Walk on October 25th

Meeting Face to Face with Businesses to Take the Pulse of our Region’s Economy

Newport and Bristol County, RI – Connect Greater Newport, the regional economic development division of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting its annual Business Walk on Tuesday, October 25th from 9am to 12pm to meet in person with business owners in Newport and Bristol Counties and gather their input on the region’s business climate

Erin Donovan Boyle, Executive Director of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are excited to visit with business owners on location this year to hear directly from them about what is going well and what can be improved in our business environment. This is an excellent opportunity for business owners to share their feedback directly with community leaders, government representatives and state officials about any obstacles they might be facing and to share suggestions about what kinds of business assistance would help them grow and become more profitable.”

Small teams of interviewers will visit with businesses to conduct a brief interview between 9am to 12pm on Tuesday, October 25th To participate in the Business Walk, a business must be actively operating in either Newport or Bristol Counties Space is limited to the first 100 businesses who sign up at https://www.connectgreaternewport.com/businesswalk business sign up Information collected from the interviews will be developed into a report with recommendations that will be shared with all participants, government officials, business leaders and the broader community to help shape policies and priorities to improve the business climate in Rhode Island.

The first Greater Newport Business Walk was held in 2019 and a team of 80 volunteers visited more than 90 businesses in Newport and Bristol counties Last year, we held a “virtual business walk” interviewing more than 50 businesses by video to learn how they adapted their operations during the pandemic and sharing ideas about how to build a more resilient economy for the future. We aim to hold this event annually.

According to Isabel Marsh, Business Outreach Specialist for Connect Greater Newport: “Last year, 72% of businesses reported being confident about their business being successful in the future with many reporting strong sales or even increased revenue relative to pre pandemic times. At the same time, we heard that our local businesses were affected by

1

challenges facing businesses nationally, such as the labor shortage. 51% of businesses stated that finding workers continued to be a significant challenge. Business owners are worried about continuing operations with reduced staff.”

For more information about our 2021 findings, Read 2021 Business Pulse Report

We encourage all businesses in Newport and Bristol Counties to participate and share their feedback to help us develop programs and provide technical assistance that meets the specific needs of businesses in our region.
