Normalcy on the horizon... It's crazy to think that this time last year, we were completely shut down, trying to figure out how to navigate all the new challenges we were facing. Balancing personal stuggles, fearing COVID and dealing with a new world was hard to say the least. On top of everything, our industry also took Deidre Wilson hits. Specifiically, we all felt the financial sting of the eviction moratorium; especially when it was extended. When uncertainy hit not only our personal but professional lives, coming together as an association was important. Supporting local programs fighting in the best interest of our industry was critical. Luckily, with the help of programs such as Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions and Charlotte RAMP, we are starting to see some financial relief. Today, we are moving in the right direction with a new normal. As we start the process of getting back to the life we once knew, it may leave us wondering what that looks like in terms of the GCAA. In-person meetings and events have started back up and we are excited about the upcoming opportunities the GCAA is offering this Spring/Summer. Starting with the annual Charity Golf Classic and Leasing & Manager Appreciation, we got to makeup for lost time and see fellow members again. Looking ahead, the annual Trade Show is a great networking opportunity for suppliers and owners, as well as one of our most anticipated events of the year. Of course, let’s not forget the credential courses where members can choose to further their education and build their career. As we return to normacly, what I'm sure most everyone is looking forward to, is seeing each other again. With that in mind, I encourage you to register for events and education as the GCAA welcomes everyone back with open arms.

What goes around comes around... I honestly can’t believe it's almost summer already. This year has honestly been both the slowest and the fastest at the same time! I wanted to use this quarter's article to talk about conscientious association membership and leadership. What does it mean to be a truly “active” member of an association as a supplier member? Let’s address that first! Often when a supplier Betsy Kirkpatrick starts their membership, they believe that attending the Trade Show and a few events will get them business. That is just not going to work y'all. In order to be visible, you need to participate. Attend events, join committees and attend their meetings, volunteer, give back to the industry that you work in, and that in turn, will pay your bills. People can tell the difference between someone who truly cares about solving their problems and someone who just wants to sell them something. So make sure you invest in the members and the industry as genuinely as you can. Secondly, let's talk leadership. True leadership is servanthood and reaching back to bring others forward. Being a leader in the GCAA isn’t about the spotlight; it is about bettering the Association, the industry as a whole, and nurturing the next set of leaders. I am proud to serve with so many amazing leaders of the Association that exemplify this in everything they say and do. And, it is with their leadership that we will move past this pandemic and into the next phase of the GCAA. Lastly, I would love to chat with any supplier member (or owner/manager) about how to get more involved in the Association, how to make those genuine connections, and why serving the Association and the industry is so vital. Members are the lifeblood of the Association, and without you, your involvement and your viewpoint we will never be the best GCAA we can be!

A Roofing Treat LLC (dba Roof Maxx of Charlotte, NC) was started after my wife, Janice, and I were moving back from our missionary work in South Africa. Our son, Ryan, asked us to look at this exciting new product called Roof Maxx. It is an ecofriendly product designed to extend the life of asphalt roofs for 5 years per treatment at a fraction of the cost of replacing the roof. The three of us thought it was such a great product/service that we became a certified dealer in March 2019.

2019 - A challenging year for several reasons.

The costs of setting up a new business coupled with introducing a new product to the area was quite the challenge. But we knew that things could turn around with a niche service that could really save people money on their roofs while also helping to keep shingles out of the landfills longer. We were scheduled to jump start 2020 with Charlotte’s Southern Spring Show around the end of February 2020.

March 2020 - We received 64 leads from the Southern Spring Show and had already assessed and provided quotes on the homes when COVID-19 hit. Our chance to provide a financial boost for our business quickly changed with our leads indicating that they just could not afford to take a chance on our product for their homes due to the uncertain future with the virus. We ended up with no jobs from the show. Our membership with GCAA came at a great time to help us be able to connect with more people through a different avenue of helping the apartment association maintenance people to have a unique way of saving their budget funds. We knew that our services could help them to use important funds for dealing with the effects of the pandemic.

2021 – Is starting out with a ray of hope. The GCAA Virtual Business Exchanges have been a welcome shot of new opportunities to bring our Roof Maxx roof treatment service to the multi-family industry. We have connected with key personnel in several multi-family management companies that are now seeing the benefits of what we can offer their property owners. We really feel that it’s the start of a successful year. Our recommendation - We just want to let folks know that a GCAA membership has benefits you just cannot expect. How long have you been an instructor? With GCAA since 2019. I have been instructing with Blue Ridge for about 7 years. I currently instruct NALP. I can’t say I have a specialty; I teach wherever I am needed! What does the teaching process look like for you? Of course, I look at the coursework and try to intertwine my onsite knowledge with the curriculum. The process, for me, is everchanging!

What do you gain from the training experience? Knowledge! Being a Regional, sometimes you feel out of the loop when it comes to day-to-day leasing operations. Teaching keeps me in the know.

Why did you become an instructor? When I graduated high school and received my class ring, I had "knowledge is power" engraved in it. That holds true 29 years later. The more knowledge you have, the more successful you can become in your field and with your craft. This has inspired me to share that same belief with others.
